Miles away from the sunken city and above the surface is where the merman of the hour was. Seth was currently admiring the sky as he was perched on a nearby rock.
Seth is the youngest of Poseidon's children, and the only boy. He was quite handsome with his blue tail fin, black hair with blue highlights he had dyed himself, black eyes, light skin features, and a smile that could melt any heart. And since he was above the water, you could see gills on his neck along with a necklace that was made of aquamarine. Seth also had the most magnificent singing voice in the entire kingdom. He considered it a blessing and one of the few remainders of his mother. He was quite adventurous and very neat when it comes to his room.
As Seth looked to the sky, he frowned at the mentioning of the most sacred law. Contact with the human world was forbidden. And honestly, Seth found that law ridiculous. This law all started because of his mother's death. A pirate ship had invaded their cove one time. Seth and the girls were just children when it happened. The pirate ship collided with his mother as she tried to help a mermaid who's tail fin got caught underneath a boulder.
Seth, while it was forbidden, was still interested in the human world. They weren't all bad from the looks of it. And they were like them in a similar way. Curiosity must have been a common nature. Seth stretched himself out and gazed to the horizon of the sea before singing.
"This is where I belong
Beneath the clear wide blue here!
I feel completely free
It's like all my life has been wrong
And somehow, now, at last I'm in
My own skin
Up here in the world above!"
Seth always felt the human world is like the second home he could have, but Atlantis was his true and first home. He was a prince, constantly trying to make his father happy. Sure, he is a bit of a scatterbrain at times, but he still tries. Sometimes, he felt like a disappointment to him, though. He expects all these huge achievements but he's only one person and he has his own hobbies and personality.
"There's so much light up here
Light and space
The sun's so bright here
Upon my face!
It feels so right here
Warm as love
Life seems to be
Almost calling to me
From this strange new world above!"
Seth reached his hand out, feeling the warmth along his skin. He felt free up here, rather than down in the sea. His true home felt like a cage at times, restricting him from his curiosity. The human world had so much to offer, what was so wrong about that? Sure not all humans are good as some are bad, but Seth wanted to know more. He wanted to be with them.
"Seth!" "Hey, Seth!"
Two voices caused Seth to cease his daydreaming and singing. The two voices belong to his two best friends, Haven and Breanna. Haven is a light skin mermaid with a maroon shark tail, black braided hair, and amber eyes. Breanna, on the other hand, is a Bottlenose dolphin. Seth has known them since his birth.
"Daydreaming again?" Breanna teased.
"Maybe," Seth secretly blushed before shifting his position on the rock, "anyways, what's this surprise you mentioned."
"Always to the point," Haven joked, before diving underwater. Breanna and Seth followed afterwards, making a splash as they did.
The three friends made their way to a ship graveyard, where Seth loved to hang out and discover human stuff. He had brought a small pouch for carrying items. "Hmmmm, that one looks new," Seth pointed out. Breanna noticed it too, "Yeah, I think that one was recent." Haven, on the other hand, was more scared when it came to adventures like these. They always unnerved her and a sense of dread lurked around every one of these sunken ships. "Yyyyyeah, they're all nice. Welp, time to head back!" Haven hastily said, ready to leave.
"Oh, come on Haven. Cold fins already?" Seth joked. "N-no, just rather be on guard, while you and Breanna look on the inside," the shark tailed mermaid suggested, "plus, I think I'm coming down with something. Yeah, it feels really serious."
Seth and Breanna smirked at this. "Okay, we will go," the two marine creatures said, "and you can stay on the watch for sharks," they finished before taking off into a sunken ship.
"Yeah, you do that and I-" Haven paused her sentence before getting scared, "Sharks! Don't leave me!" She said, swimming in a hurry towards the two. Despite her shark tail, the idea of sharks still unnerved her greatly. She joined them in the sunken ship...
When an ominous shadow lurked behind them.
Seth and Breanna swam with interest while Haven trailed behind and cautiously. "Yeah, this isn't too bad. A little excitement, danger, and nothing to-" she shrieked at the sight of a skeleton "AHHHHHH!" She collided with a weak support that caused it to crash. "Seth!" She swam into her human friend, shivering nonstop.
"Are you good?" Seth joked. "Y-y--yeah, s-s--sure," Haven stuttered. "Hey, guys!" Breanna quietly informed, "check out what I found." The marine mammal swam into a room of the sunken ship as the two merfolk followed. Seth, in particular, saw what she found and gasped in shock. "On my gosh..." he lost his train of thought, admiring the object.
It was...
A fork.
"Have you ever seen something so wonderful in your life!" Seth exclaimed. "...Seth, is it like a miniature version of your Dad's trident?" Haven inquired. "Hey, you're right!" Seth noticed, "Perhaps humans made mini replicas of them in memory," he concluded, unaware of the shadow that swam by them.
But Haven did. She felt a chill run through her skin and scales. "Do you guys here that?" She questioned. "Yeah, come to think of it, I have few chills right now," Breanna admitted. Seth, on the other hand wasn't paying attention, he was enthralled by another human object. "I wondered what this is?" He said, interested in a pipe.
"Seth, I suggest we go now," Haven heavily insisted. "Will you relax, nothing bad is going t-" Seth started before a great white shark appeared and had one goal in mind: Lunch.
"SHARK! SHARK! SHARK!" Haven made a break for it, swimming as fast as she could with Breanna on her trail. The great white snapped at them before seeing the lone merman. Seth backed away, avoiding the jaws of the fish, into a corner where he flicked a desk to create some distance between him and the shark. It proved a bit effective and the merman slipped away, avoiding become the fish's food. Seth swam away and met up with his two friends. "We need to swim!" Haven said, heading out of the shipwreck as Breanna and Seth came out of the shipwreck. The shark close behind them.
Swimming around a mast, the merfolk and dolphin had the shark right on their tails. Seth glanced down and saw in anchor with a large head. Thinking fast, Seth broke off from his friends and dove for the anchor. The shark noticed his break off and went for the solo. Seth saw the shark on his tail and poured more energy into his tail fin, not wanting to be lunch. He eventually found himself in the head of the anchor just as the great white shark opened his jaws to crunch the prince. Seth jerked backwards and dodged the teeth as the head got stuck in the anchor.
Seth let out a breath, exhausted after swimming for his life. He then received a flick to his head, courtesy of Haven. "Okay, okay, so maybe there was a shark..." the prince admitted. "Anyways, to Marcus?" Both of his friends nodded and swam to the surface.
On a small rocky island was where the pelican named Marcus lived. He was Seth's expert of human stuff. He wasn't an oddball of his flock, rather more interested in human items. He was currently in a sunken ship's crow nest, humming to himself.
"Marcus!"
The pelican turned to the call of his name, "Seth! Breanna! Haven!" The avian flew down from his perch and glided down to their level. The three marine creatures stayed in the water while Marcus reached the coast. "How's it going?"
"Well other than the near death experience we just dealt with because someone," Haven gestured to Seth, who sheepishly laughed, "thought there were no sharks near the shipwreck, just peachy." Seth rolled his eyes, "You are not let that go for a while, aren't you?"
"Nope." Was the reply.
"Aside from that, what human stuff do you have this time?" Marcus asked. Seth pulled out his pouch and dumped the two items he was able to collect. "Oh! Would you look at that!" Marcus mentioned before picking the 'mini trident' up. "Now this is quite the item."
"What? What is it?" Seth asked. "It's a dinglehopper," Marcus informed before laughing, "sorry, my bad, it's a fork. Humans apparently use them to comb their hair and eat!"
"Hmmm... why is shaped like my father's trident?" Seth questioned. The pelican shrugged, "Beats me."
"Well, what about this one?" Breanna gestured with her front flipper to the other object. "Oh, that's what humans call a pipe," Marcus explained. "I think humans use it for emitting some sort of gray steam. But I heard they are great for music as well."
Music.
And that's when Seth realized he had a concert. "Music!" He shouted before collecting his stuff, "The concert! Oh I hope I haven't missed it yet!"
"The concert was today?!" Breanna clicked as Haven began to worry again, "This is not good! You know how your dad gets!"
"Well, hopefully, he doesn't snap! Let's go!" Seth hurried, "Thanks, Marcus!" Before diving into the ocean with his friends. "Anytime!" Marcus called out.
The trio swam, hurrying to Atlantis...
But were being watched by two eels, both turquoise and with a yellow glowing eye. Their eyes projected towards their master, who sat in his mermolk sized conch.
"Yes, yes," he said, mocking their urgency, "hurry to daddy's big celebration. Bah! When I was at the palace, we had parties everyday. They were fun, but now look at me, wasting away as they celebrate a stupid occasion." Their master is Addison, the infamous sea warlock and Poseidon's younger brother. Unlike the rest of the merfolk, he has octopus tentacles where fins were. He always thought he was the oddball of the family, which grew his hatred towards his sibling. He got everything, the respect, love, and Addison hated it. He always figured just because he had eight extra set of arms, he couldn't impress his parents.
Which is why he learned some Atlantean magic. He was always more skilled at that without any fancy weapon. But that led to him wanting to learn more. The skills, magic, enchantments, everything. His parents saw this descent and wanted him to stop, but he didn't heed their warning. As a result, he went into forbidden magic: black magic. His parents were horrified and banished him, which infuriated Addison and caused him to snap.
He began to rant about how Poseidon always got what he wanted and how normal he was while he was part cephalopod. His last act was to curse his parents with a black magic spell that slowly drained them of their life. Satisfied with his action, Addison left with every black magic item he could get his tentacles on. It wasn't enough, because after hearing his brother became king and married, he wanted that power to rule the sea.
"Well, so we'll be celebrating ourselves with the power of the trident mixed with my black magic, I can rule the sea with an iron tentacle. Jonathan, Terry, keep an eye on Poseidon's only son. He might be the key to Poseidon's undoing," the sea warlock cackled before laughing as a plan formed.
Soon or later, he would have that trident and begin the reign of Addison would begin.
