"Can we buy all this in London?" Harry wondered aloud. "If yeh know where to go," said Hagrid.
Stepping off the train, Hagrid turned to walk down the street, but before he took one step, a beautiful tawny owl flew down onto his held-out arm, with a letter in his beak. "Thank you Thoth*" Hagrid said. Opening the letter, Hagrid read through it quickly before concealing it in his coat.
"Change of plans 'Arry. We're picking up anothe kid first." Harry simply nodded. Hagrid headed down the street, before calling a cab and telling the cabbie to take them to a, Orphanage? Hagrid himself barely fit in the car, and when the man pulled to a stop, he had to squeeze himself out.
Stepping out, Harry stared at the building. It was three stories, drab and grey, and looked not unlike a prison. The sign upfront stated that it was an 'Orphanage for Young Ladies." Walking in, Hagrid went up to the desk and asked the lady for an 'Elizabith Stoll.' The woman looked a bit flustered, and Harry almost felt bad for her, staring up at Hagrid like that. "Who are you," she asked. "M' from Hogwarts Boarding School. I've come to 'elp 'er pick up supplies." The lady nodded and said, "I'll get her for you," before going through a door behind her.
She came back with a girl Harry's age, with really pretty blue eyes, and long thick black hair in a ponytail with a pink bow. Freckles dotted her cheeks and the bridge of her nose. She was wearing a white shirt with a short blue overcoat, and a long blue skirt.
Hagrid nodded and said, "come on Elizabith." She nodded and followed him out of the building. She was silent while they walked down the street but the moment they turned the corner, her face burst into a wide smile and she started taking off her overcoat and tying it around her waist, then taking her hair out of the ponytail, putting the bow in her pocket, and very quickly put her hair up in a braid.
It was rather chilly out, and she was wearing a short-sleeve shirt, but she seemed to barely feel the cold. She did all this while talking a mile a minute.
"Oh thank god you got me out of there, I was getting ready to scream. It's gets rather suffocating in there, not talking or anything, just sitting and looking nice. What took you so long. I began to worry it was just a daydream I invented to keep me occupied. Where are we going first? I read the list, and it says I need a wand and such. I thought it was rather stupid that you wouldn't be able to bring a broom to the school as a first-year. I wonder who ruined that for us. I can't wait to get there. It says we take a train off of platform 9 ¾, but I've never heard of that platform before, have you?"
She stopped talking rather abruptly, and it took Harry a couple of seconds to catch up with her words to realize that the last bit was directed to him, as she was looking at him rather expectantly. "Er, I suppose not." She nodded with a self-satisfied smirk on her face as if she had just won an argument. Hagrid just smiled wide at her and chuckled.
"Well Elizabith, I'll take you there now." She made a rather funny face at that, and said, "I prefer to be called Lizzie or Liz if you don't mind." He smiled, and nodded.
Hagrid clapped his large hands together, and said, "right, well I'll take you, t'Diagon Alley, an get your stuff." "Hagrid," the gi-Lizzie said, "I don't have money for this. said there was a fund for me." "Me as well Hagrid. I don't have any money either." "Firs' of', it's Professor McGonagall t'the both o' you. Second, 'Arry, I know for a fact that you 'ave money from your parents. Lizzie, there is a fund for students with no money, I'll help you get your stuff and charge it to Hogwarts." "Thank you Hagrid," they both said at the same time. "Ah, don mention it."
She turned back to him. "By the way, I've been meaning to ask you, what's up with the mark on your head. Is it a birthmark or a scar?" "Er, it's a scar."
Her eyes widened, and he braced himself, but all she said was, "Wicked. I don't have any cool scars. But I do have this cool birthmark on my arm." She extended her arm, and on the inside of her right arm, was a perfect swirl birthmark, much darker than the surrounding skin.
He couldn't help but wonder about this strange girl. She lived in an orphanage that she hated, talked nonstop, and seemed to know a bit about the wizarding world. She was also nice. He was brought out of his musings by being poked in the shoulder by said girl.
"I can feel you thinking about me. It's making my brain hurt. So, I'll tell you what you want to know if you tell me what I want to know. Deal," she said as she held out her hand. His face broke into a smile, and he shook her hand. "You first though," he said. "Fair enough," she replied with a laugh. "Just don't hold back."
"Why are you at that orphanage." She sighed and looked down.
He panicked, worried he'd upset her and lost his first 'wizarding' friend. "I'm sorry, um, I can ask a different question."
To his shock, she looked up at him and burst out laughing.
"I can't believe you fell for that. Damn, when I said don't hold back, you went for it."
"So, I didn't offend you?"
She huffed and shook her head. "It's fine for you to be curious. I would be too. In fact, I am curious about you. But, I said I'd go first, and I always keep my word. My mum died a couple of years ago, and my dad disappeared when I was 4. Gone or dead, your guess is as good as mine. Mum always got sad whenever I brought him up, so I just stopped asking."
He nodded, seeming to understand. "How'd you know about the wizarding world."
"Mum was one. She used it a couple of times to put the lights on or keep warm, just to save money on the bills. I never got the full story from her, but I don't think the 'Wizarding' world was very kind to her. She was the first in her family to have magic, but I don't think that was it. Or at least, that was only part of it. She mentioned once that the magical community didn't approve of her being with my dad, so think of that what you will."
"Who was your dad."
"Again, your guess is as good as mine. He left when I was too young to really remember him but in the few memories I have of him he was kind, and he loved us. "
Harry nodded again, and a look of longing flashed across his face, but it was gone so quickly Lizzie wondered if she had imagined it. "Alright, I'm satisfied. Your turn. Ask away."
She was silent for a bit, a thoughtful look on her face. "What happened to your parents."
Harry opened his mouth to reply, but just before he did, Hagrid cut him off. "Sorry kids, but this is it. The Leaky Cauldron. It's a famous place."
They looked at each other, then looked up, to where a rickety old sign hung, that said, 'The Leaky Cauldron'. It didn't look like much, but they both know looks could be deceiving. Who would have thought that these two small 12-year-olds would have had magic?
They looked at each other again, before Liz let out a big breath, and said, "Well, here goes nothing."
They pushed open the door together and stepped into a whole new world.
