Hello everyone, I am Anime Borat. My favorite anime are Azumanga Daioh, Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star. My interest are books, games, anime and general information(needed for creativity). I hope you enjoy my stories and looking forward to make more. I believe that fan fiction spawns creativity, increases writing, thinking and reading skills. And the guy on the picture is Patrick Galloway from Clive Barker's Undying. NEWS: Remember, the Eleventh of November! I must admit that this is not my best but this prose I made was based on the popular rhyme that is recited during Guy Fawkes Night in the Fifth of November and inspired by the poem Hills of Bastogne but makes its subject matter the armistice of November 11, 1918, the end of the Great War, now the First World War, and its profound effect during the 20th century, namely the Second World War. As the new decade of the new millennium looms the place of these wars and the greater 20th century in general is place under a microscope. How their relevance and memory in today's world is evolving, for better or worst. During the last two decades they've been picked apart, put under a microscope, and appropriated so many times by so many parties for so many agendas that it frayed and threadbare. How do tell our children what it is in an age of selective interpretations? How can people understand what these have all been about when it's deemed not a topic for "polite conversation"? The wars were not games, they're not just past events that happened, nor is their legacy mere academic exercises. Now the formalities, November 11, the day of Great War Armistice, is forever associated with World War 1-related observances and later observances for the dead of all wars in the West. In America it's known as Veterans Day, in Britain and and much of the Commonwealth, it's Remembrance Day, Armistice Day in France, Belgium (Women's Day also falls on that date as well), Serbia, and New Zealand. It's remembered as Independence Day in Poland and Angola. A number of Christian feast days are celebrated on November 11. In popular observance November 11 would be remembered for the sacrifice and suffering of the men who fought and died during World War 1, the war marked sudden evolution of warfare from its 19th century form to the all-encompassing, all-consuming conflict that spawned from the rapid pace of technology of the Industrial Revolution and the full-bodied theories and analysis of military thinkers like Clauswitz, and the cycle will repeat again which realized total war in a vast industrial and global scale, culminating in the atomic bomb; World War 1 destroyed all classical notions of martial honor and glory, of patriotism and duty, and made humanity stare starkly at its potential to destroy itself many times over just to fulfill these old notions. It took such a devastating war to remind people of the old follies of national glory and grand schemes of greatness, to see how destructive we are in our shortsightedness and squandering our potential for that; and radically redefine what it means to sacrifice for one's country. Then it took another to see stand hand-in-hand to make a stand against men who would bring forth tyranny, who failed to understand to the crippling cost and intoxicating miasma of chasing old glory, to fight for a higher cause. Though it is a largely Western day of observance, what it means rings true to all mankind. If you're looking for my not-as-exciting commemorations of November 5 and 9, check below. Apocalypse Now - I think I should begin this section with a story from that movie's archive here on FFN so as to remind us that war can harm the spirit as well as the body, so many broken men and women learned firsthand after leaving the war zone and few other movies captured this so starkly. Call of Duty - no surprise this game's archive would be listed, given its roots as a WW2 FPS and transitioning to contemporary times. Fluff, humor, and action stories have as much a place here as with introspective and dramatic fics. Sadly, COD has gone way past its prime, so far away from its roots and essence while vainly chasing a return to old glory. While the first FPS was a WW2 one, 1981's Castle Wolfenstein, long before FPS became a term and then formalized into a genre, Medal of Honor popularized the war in FPS format. Directed by Steven Spielberg in 1999 to make a game version of his cinematic hit Saving Private Ryan from the previous year, Medal of Honor took Goldeneye N64's gameplay and puts the player in the boots of an OSS agent wrecking having against the Nazi war machine in Europe. This had spawned a number of sequels and spinoffs, each less successful than the last, including a short-lived reboot series set during the War on Terror. The latest in the series, first to use VR to capitalize on the success of Half-Life: Alyx, fell short of its ambition. The Black Magic by TheBeastThatLostItsPlaceToGo. MOH: Rabbits Tale by Raider09. Metal Gear - the game franchise makes clear it's anti-war yet it it's also an examination of the human condition in our modern times. The series, created by Hideo Kojima, popularized stealth as a core mechanic and proved that videogames are a viable medium for cinematic storytelling. The series critiques our society, our politics, our culture, the videogame industry, and made some rather bold and prescient statements of what our world is today. Can say much about though I watched some Elder Scroll lore and a review, plus knew of its place in video game history, enough for me to read a modest number of fics. In honor of the occasion, here's this treat. Eat your heart out, Todd. The Elder Scrolls: Yjorrik of Colovia by PartyPat22. [You know, in my place it would've been yesterday but I think the commemoration of an important day is in order: November 9. As with all days November 9 is steeped in history, examples are the Coup of 18 Brumaire of 1799, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, which for most scholars so as the end of the French Revolution and the beginning of the Napoleonic era of France's history; the sighting of the Cape Cod, Massachusetts by the pilgrims of the Mayflower in 1620; beginning of the Meiji Restoration when the Tokugawa Shogunate returned power back to the Emperor of Japan after two centuries of isolationist rule; the Great Boston Fire of 1872; and Cambodia gaining independence from France in 1953. But the greatest historical significance of November 9 is in Germany, where it became known as Schicksalstag (Day of Fate/Day of Destiny). Five major historical events that rocked Germany and later the world occurred during that day. 1) The execution of Robert Blum for his role in the Vienna revolts, part of the greater 1848 Revolutions that rocked much of Europe. His death forebode the ultimate crushing of the German revolutions in the following year. 2) The November Revolution where Wilhelm II abdicated his throne and in its place the rise of the ill-fated Weimar Republic, which saw the end of the Second Reich that began in Versailles by Bismarck but powerful conservative forces remain politically relevant and opposed the new liberal government up to 1933. 3) The Beer Hall Putsch of Munich in 1923, Hitler's failed attempt at seizing political power in the postwar revolutionary chaos of Germany, which was crushed by government troops and police. The future dictator was arrested along with many of his followers but he was saved from deportation and long imprisonment by conservative forces hostile to the republic, giving him an object lesson about how to seize power via legitimate means, backed up by the violence. 4) Kristallnacht of 1938, the violent Nazi-sponsored anti-Semitic pogroms that sparked in response of the assassination of a German diplomat by a Jewish radical in response to official persecution. A tragic beginning to the Holocaust, it saw it saw a swirl of violence that left many Jews dead or driven to suicide, much of their property, homes, and community centers looted and destroyed. Hitler's Germany dropped all pretense of moderation and intensified their persecution of Jews, leading to the greatest human tragedy in history. 5) The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, where the hated barrier was destroyed at last and the country, divided into East and West after the war was made whole again. Thousands of Germans from what used to be both sides celebrated the reunification of their country as the wall was brought down, leading to the rapid dissolution of East Germany against the expectations of many. The bringing down of the wall symbolically marked the end of the Cold War, with similar fermenting revolutions occurring throughout communist eastern Europe, with the Soviet Union the last to fall in 1991. It should be noted that November was of some significance to science and technology in Germany as well: in 1922, Albert Einstein won the 1921 Nobel Peace Prize for his work in physics, especially the discovery of the photoelectric effect. It would have an important impact in the development of optical technology such as night-vision goggles and photoelectron spectroscopy. And a sign of hope, Germany announced the discovery of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech. In the dark year with had it was the first sign of hope we have of beating the virus that gripped our world today. Death Stranding - I think I missed the opportunity to post this back in Spooktober because it makes the interplay of life and death a major plot point and a central theme of its story as well as incorporated into core gameplay to comment about death and dying in videogames. Missed also the opportunity to post it yesterday on the anniversary of its release two years ago. Being initially polarizing on its release and it still is, it hits differently for many when the pandemic hit, especially of its message of reconnecting society together to heal a broken world which struck many housebound and struggling with quarantine measures so deeply. It's sad that archive has so few fics and even fewer of notable quality as you can see here. I urge you to read them. For what it's worth, everyone, keep on keeping on. Back In the Afterlife by talabutter. Nothing and everything by HoshisamaValmor. Concerning the holiday I missed covering on the day of its commemoration, Guy Fawkes Night occurs on November 5, the first recorded bombing attempt in early modern history and quite practically the first attempt at a terrorist attack, the Gunpowder Plot. The plot occurred when a group of English Catholics conspired together to assassinate the Protestant monarch King James I at the House of Lords with the intention of restoring a Catholic monarchy after decades of anti-Catholic intolerance. The plot fell apart the plotters found out a Catholic lord would be attending a session on that fateful day and tried to warn him off, which backfired and Guy Fawkes, who was left to guard the barrels of gunpowder buried beneath coals in the cellar was caught and arrested. Shortly after including a standoff by some of the fleeing conspirators, Guy and eight other survivors of the plot were tried for treason and executed. The thwarting of the Gunpowder Plot was celebrated with bonfires and special church services that said thanksgiving for the king's survival, and made official months later by proclamation of Parliament the Observance of November 5 Act. These celebrations became focal points of anti-Catholic sentiment in England and its colonies, devolving into violence against Catholics, where effigies of the Pope were burned along with Guy Fawkes's and people wore masks of Guy Fawkes for the festivities. While the night for the most part remained a English holiday, Guy Fawkes would be given a new lease on life in popular culture through the movie V for Vendetta, adapted from Alan Moore's graphic novel of the same name, though a sympathetic portrayal of Guy Fawkes emerged in a 1841 novel by William Harrison Ainsworth. The titular hero is a Guy Fawkes mask-wearing anti-hero who is dead-set on his revenge against a totalitarian government ruling Britain who reenacts the Gunpowder Plot as a symbolic finale to his saga. The movie elevated Guy Fawkes, or rather V in his mask, to a symbol of anti-establishment protest, his mask a fixture of mass rallies and is to be the face of the hacktivist group Anonymous. Ironically, Warner Brothers, who produced the movie, holds copyright over the masks, raking a tidy profit when each is sold. Even more ironic was that no large-scale backlash against Catholics occurred in England, with many Catholics in the English government retaining important posts. For what it's worth, we are seeing his legacy for better or for worse in today. It inspired the prose which I used to commemorate upcoming November 11.] |
