She honestly didn't know why she was here. She wasn't a true believer, but she was drawn here for some reason, maybe because she missed her mother. She didn't know.

Whatever the reason she found herself in the catholic church, where she sat quietly thinking. Usually, she would be sitting on her bed reading her mother's book with her teddy but today it didn't help with the emotions chewing up inside her. In fact, it just made it worse, so much so that she found herself needing to leave the flat, her safe haven.

Thankfully she had work in the afternoon, so at least her mind could be distracted from this turmoil and she would be too distracted to cry at least for a little while. Reaching up she wiped the tears that were beginning to form from her eyes.

"Are you okay, m'dear?" She heard a familiar voice asked before she felt someone sit next to her. She tried to gain some composure before she looked up to see Mrs Gray next to her.

She flushed with embarrassment at being caught crying.

"I-I'm fine thank you Mrs Gr... I mean Polly." Katherina corrected herself when Mrs Gray, she means Polly gave a disapproving look in her direction.

"Ada was looking for you hoping to catch you to make plans with you." Polly told her with a small smile.

"O-Oh, I-I'm sorry, I-I just thought I would come here before getting ready for work in the afternoon." Katherina answered quietly.

"There is no need to be sorry m'dear," Polly told her. "It's nice to see a young girl come to church, even one so sad." Katherina just looked down at her lap and began to play with her sleeves. "What made you so sad love?"

"J-Just t-trying to remember my mum," Katherina whispered. Pain flickered in her eyes briefly and bit her lip. She wasn't sure if she should say. "I-I'm not spiritual, honestly I-I don't know why I -I'm here."

"Sometimes faith works in mysterious ways love," Polly said comfortingly to her. "What was your mother like?"

"I-I was told she was b-beautiful, a-ambitious and had a wild heart." She said with a smile, at the thought of her mother. "S-She apparently adored mythology and history as I do."

"When did you lose her?" Polly asked quietly.

"U-umm, she passed when I was two or three." She replied sadly, looking as if she was trying to recall. "I-I don't really remember her." She admitted. That was an understatement. She couldn't even remember what she looked like, she had no pictures of her. Nothing except her mother's favourite book and the teddy bear.

"Oh, you poor thing," Polly remarked morosely, before reaching over to take Katherina's hand in hers. "I'm sure she's watching over you."

Katherina just smiled tearfully but said nothing. Honestly, she didn't know what to think, if that were true. Religion never came easy to Katherina. She didn't understand why God or her mother if she was looking down at her. Would allow the things that had happened over the past, like the war or what happened to her.

"M-Maybe," Katherina mumbled, once again looking down as she played with her sleeves. "U-um how have you been Mrs Gre- I mean Polly?"

"I've been fine, m'dear," Polly said giving her a small smile, from what Katherina could see from the corner of her eye. Which she of course returned before looking around. Though Katherina wasn't what someone would call religious by any means, she could still see the beauty in the building. It was wonderful. "How's work been, I know the pub has been busy but I hope you're taking care of yourself?"

"I-It's been fine thank you." She answered though it made her feel self-conscious sometimes especially when Mr Shelby came in. Though he hadn't spoken to her since she said no, she still felt his eyes on her every now and then. Which sent shivers up and down her spine.

"No one been bothering you, or being inappropriate?" Katherina didn't know what to say considering the person that really bothered her was Polly's nephew.

"E-everyone has been nice and r-respectful." It wasn't a lie, for the most part, all the men in the pub seemed to stay away from her.

"That's good, love," Polly replied smiling. "When do you start work today."

"A-At o-one I-I should be heading back now, to get ready for work." Katherina stammered, she tried to make her breaths as quiet as possible, managing to rise from her seat without making the faintest noise. She didn't want to disturb the lady in the back that was busy in prayer. "I-It was nice seeing you Mrs Gra- I-I mean Polly."

"It was nice to see you too m'dear."

With that Katherina, slowly made her way out of the church, causing her to shiver from the cold as she made her way back to the Garrison.

She passed by warehouses and big, sweaty men toiled by shovelling coal, chucking wood into large furnaces, and heavy lifting. She stared around at the different shops, looked into store windows, and smiled. No one noticed her, which she was grateful for.

Though as she neared the Garrison, she nearly squealed in delight as she saw one of the most beautiful creatures in the world. A beautiful brown horse. She slowly moved closer, praying that she would startle the horse and wouldn't hurt her. She held her hand out so the magnificent animal could smell her, before stroking the animal.

"Y-You're so beautiful boy," She said in a soothing voice. "W-What are you doing out here, hm? Y-Your rider just leaves you out here?" She asked as she stroke and played with its mane. "I-I wonder what your name is."

"His name is Monaghan Boy." A voice spoke and Katherina couldn't help but jump. Turning slowly, she saw Tommy.

He looked so handsome, especially in his grey suit and hat, at that Katherina quickly looked away, turning her attention back to the horse.

"H-He's a beautiful horse." Katherina replied quietly as she stroke the horse one more time.

"That he is." He said coming to stand next to her. She immediately tensed at that. "Where were you, earlier?" He inquired.

"W-Why?" She asked, lifting her eyes slightly to see that he cocked his head to the side and regarded her for a long moment. It was a look that told her not to argue with him but she tried to hold firm anyway.

"I wanted to tell you to be ready for nine tomorrow." She immediately shook her head.

"N-No," Katherina said as she crossed her arms over her chest. "I-I'm already planned to meet M-Miss Shel- I mean A-Ava."

"Is that so?" He said in turn, his eyes staring pointedly down at her.

"Y-Yes, I was going to tell A-Ava today when I-I saw her." She replied trying not to meet his eyes. She knew she would have to stay true to what she had just said now. God, she was such a bad liar. "S-Seeing as it m-my day off tomorrow."

When she met his eyes again, he looked unconvinced making her palms sweaty. He then narrowed his eyes at her, only for a moment. But it was long enough to make her throat suddenly felt dry.

"I'll let Ava know then." He said irritated, clearly not happy by her refusal.

"T-Thank you." She muttered. Though she wished she could get herself out of this situation, she had somehow placed herself in. God, she was an idiot.

"I will tell Ava to meet you outside your flat at nine then." He stated.

"U-Umm O-Okay," She replied quietly but she looked into his eyes. She couldn't help but feel like she was missing something, but she must be wrong. Instead, of digging herself a bigger hole she backed away from the house. "I-I should get going, have a nice day M-Mr She- I mean T-Tommy."

Giving a small smile, she made her way back home remembering to keep her eyes low.
