Mallory's POV
I rolled my eyes still sore over the fact that I had lost the 'scissors, paper, rock' fight against Stiles over who could sit in the front seat of our Dad's squad car which meant I was sitting in the back behind the metal bars eating my burger and fries in peace ignoring Stiles.
"Did they forget my curly fries?" Dad asked looking over at Stiles who had the bag in his lap.
"Your not supposed to eat the fries, especially the curly ones" Stiles protested making me scoff since when did that stop our Dad who was adamant to argue with us every time we tried to get him to eat healthier.
"Well I'm carrying a lethal weapon, if I want the curly fries I will have the curly fries" Dad argued and I chuckled shaking my head at him.
"If you think getting rid of contractions in all your sentences makes your argument any more legitimate, you are wrong" I shot back stubbornly since I wasn't allowed to eat a lot of junk food therefore he had to suffer as well and saw Stiles turn to me with an appreciative expression but I glared at him since I wasn't ready to forgive him and Dad looked at both of us before the radio on the dash suddenly beeped.
'Unit one do you copy' I rolled my eyes as my idiot twin reached for it immediately only to get his hand squatted at by Dad who cleared his throat and Stiles sank back in his seat.
"Sorry" I shook my head at his reply knowing it was a lie.
"Unit one copy" Dad replied into the radio while Stiles began stuffing his face with curly fries.
'Got a report of a possible 187'
"A murder!" Stiles exclaimed through a mouthful.
"Ew Stiles swallow before you talk" I shouted exasperated by the action ignoring the fact that he knew all the police codes and before I knew it we were pulling up out the front of the video rental place.
"Stay here" Dad said looking at Stiles more than me before he got out, I looked out the window before my eyes settled on the ambulance spotting Jackson and my eyes widened before they found Lydia sitting in the back.
"Oh no way" Stiles breathed out before we watched our Dad go over and talk to Jackson who looked like he was having a meltdown which made me glare at him since he really was a jerk sometimes but then my eyes went to Stiles who was opening the door and I rolled my eyes quickly knocking on the window for him to open the back door as they were locked and he obliged letting me out of the car as well.
"...which kind of blows my mind since it should be a pretty basic concept to grasp for a minimum wage rent-a-cop like you" I glared at Jackson even more. "Now I want to go home!" he yelled acting like a three year old as I approached the ambulance.
"Oh whoa is that a dead body!" Stiles suddenly yelled out and everyone turned to him including Dad who was almost glaring at him.
"Everybody back up, back up" Dad said controlling the crowd as I made it to Lydia and checked her over but she seemed fine aside from the blank look in her eyes, she was clearly in shock.
"You okay Lyds?" I asked and she just nodded, I frowned since she didn't look okay but I looked around as the wheeled the body into the ambulance frowning at it since this was another death since we found out about werewolves and that there was this Alpha person and I was getting more afraid of this whole thing especially since I felt extremely vulnerable.
The moment I got home after Dad had finished with the crime scene and dropped us off I headed to my bedroom to ignore Stiles some more but more importantly I needed to sneak out as there was someone I had to see, I made my bed look like there was someone sleeping in it before I opened my window as quietly as I could and slipped out closing it all but a couple inches before I started jogging towards the preserve thankful that my destination wasn't too far away.
When I stepped into the clearing I began to hesitate just for a couple seconds as I reconsidered this idea but I wanted to learn how to protect myself from this Alpha, I didn't want to be caught out and killed seeing as there was no way out of this mess that my brother had gotten us into by dragging us to find that body and he was the only one I thought that could teach me.
"Derek?" I called as I entered the house as cautiously as I could since there was the possibility that he wasn't even here. "Derek?" I called a bit louder as I took a few steps inside hearing something creak from the hallway behind the stairs. "Derek?" I asked a bit more hesitantly since maybe this was a bad idea, with that thought I turned around to leave only to jump and let out a scream when I saw a dark figure standing behind me.
"What are you doing here?" he asked as I held my hand over my racing heart.
"Are you trying to give me a heart attack?!" I exclaimed glaring at him.
"You're the one that snuck into my house" he retaliated and I rolled my eyes.
"I called for you three times so I hardly snuck up on you, you asshole!" I berated him watching him roll his eyes.
"You didn't answer my question, what do you want?" he asked again and I sighed.
"I came to ask for you help"
"My help?" he questioned so I nodded. "With what?"
"I want to learn how to defend myself against...your kind"
"Go home Mallory"
"I'm serious, I'm going to get dragged into my brothers and Scott's messes and I don't practically want to end up dead and I know you know self-defense techniques so I want you to teach me"
"You want me to teach you, here's my advice don't get involved"
"Please you've met my brother, that's impossible but I also don't want to be afraid of this anymore"
"I can't teach you"
"Please Derek" I begged him stopping his retreat towards the stairs. "Teach me how to defend myself, I'll put in the effort and I promise once we're done I'll leave you alone"
"Fine, be here tomorrow after school"
"Thank you" I smiled not hearing a reply back as he headed up the stairs and I took that as the end of our conversation so I left the Hale house and jogged back home slipping through my window shutting it before I changed for bed and slipped under the covers still smiling to myself.
The next morning I found myself at school sitting in chemistry next to Danny slyly watching my brother being unusually anxious at the table behind ours and that was saying something considering it was Stiles but he was literally coloring in his textbook with a highlighter.
"Just a friendly reminder parent/teacher conferences are tonight, students below a 'C' average are required to attend" I smiled thankful that I at least maintain a 'B' average in this class despite Mr Harris being one of the worst teachers. "I won't name you because the shame and self-disgust should be more than enough punishment" Harris went on before stopping at Stiles' desk and looked down. "Has anyone seen Scott McCall?" he asked looking down at Stiles who looked up with the highlighter cap in his mouth before the door opened and Jackson walked in tardy as everyone watched him take a seat and Mr Harris went over to him. "Hey Jackson, if you need to leave early for any reason, you let me know" I rolled my eyes since if it was any other student he'd have given them detention for sure. "Everyone start reading chapter nine" I sighed and started opening up my textbook. "Mr Stilinski, try putting the highlighter down between paragraphs, its chemistry not a coloring book" I chuckled a little turning to Stiles who spat the cap out of his mouth and caught it before he looked up at Danny.
"Hey Danny, can I ask you a question?" he asked and I rolled my eyes looking down at my book to focus.
"No" Danny smiled making me smile a little.
"Well I'm going to anyway, um...did Lydia show up in your homeroom today?" he asked and I frowned already knowing the answer since I hadn't seen Lydia today and she had texted me telling me she couldn't give me a ride this morning which left me to ride with Stiles.
"No" Danny replied.
"Can I ask you another question?" Stiles went on and I rolled my eyes again.
"Answer still no" Danny shot back.
"Does anybody know what happened to her and Jackson last night?"
"He wouldn't...tell me" Danny replied making me frown.
"But he's your best friend" Stiles argued making me scoff since that didn't mean anything, Lydia's supposed to be my best friend and I don't tell her everything...in fact lately it seemed like we were barely friends. "One more question" Stiles went on when Danny only shrugged.
"What?" Danny snapped a little clearly getting annoyed with my brother.
"Do you find me attractive?" Stiles suddenly asked and I looked back with a 'wtf' look as he started leaning closer awaiting Danny's answer only to fall out of his chair and spastically correct himself looking around and clear his throat.
"Are you sure your related to him?" Danny asked leaning closer to me and I chuckled.
"Believe me I wish I wasn't" I whispered seeing Stiles glare at me but he deserved it.
It was an incredibly long and boring day at school which actually was a breath of fresh air considering how things have been lately, Stiles was freaking out over last night still and the fact that Scott wasn't at school but I was staying out of that but that meant it was also very lonely considering everyone I knew seemed to be completely M-I-A so I sat alone at lunch...that was until a boy decided to sit an my empty table which wasn't surprising considering every other table was full.
"Hey" I smiled trying to be polite and he looked up almost like he didn't believe I'd spoken to him.
"You...your talking to me?" he questioned making me frown.
"Well you sat down, I thought it was the polite thing to do" I shrugged confused by his nervousness. "I'm Mallory"
"I...Isaac" he stuttered and I smiled again.
"Well it's nice to meet you Isaac" I replied and he finally gave a small corner lipped smile which allowed me to look at his face and noticed the large purple bruise on his cheek. "What happened to your face?" I asked and immediately he shut down looking away as if to hide it. "I'm sorry that was rude"
"No it's...uh...lacrosse" he replied but I frowned since I could tell he was lying but it wasn't my place to press.
"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have been so blunt about it...I don't think before I talk sometimes" I excused myself before pushing my fries towards him seeing as he didn't really have a lot to eat on his tray. "Want some"
"I'm good"
"Seriously, I don't mind since I'm not really supposed to eat too many carbohydrates"
"Why not?" he asked finally taking some and I frowned hesitating.
"Health related stuff" I shrugged and he took that nodding his head, he probably though I was just another vain girl concerned about her weight but I didn't mind, it was better than talking about my diabetes.
We didn't really talk too much after that during lunch but the company wasn't bad so when the bell rang I stood up and smiled towards him.
"Thanks for the company Isaac, you ever see me sitting alone again don't hesitate to come over I could use another friend every now and then"
"Thanks" he smiled. "You too" I nodded with a small smile before I left heading for my next class which was about as boring as the rest.
When school was out I had Stiles drop me off home where I changed into some workout clothes before I jogged to the Hale house walking in calling out for Derek and he came downstairs in jeans and a black shirt.
"You sure your ready for this?" he questioned.
"I want to be, I have to be" I nodded so he sighed and we went into the room to the left of the stairs where he cleared a small area and we started training but mostly he just had me doing pushups, sit ups and chin ups in the archway. "No offence to your training but I can do all this at home, I want you to teach me how to defend myself not work on my cardio"
"Cardio is a big factor in defending yourself, you don't want to grow tired while running for your life"
"That's what you're going to teach me, how to run for my life?" I asked him with a sight glare.
"You best bet is to run before you think about fighting especially with a werewolf"
"You're a huge help" I sighed dropping to the ground letting go of the arch way and took a drink out of the water bottle I'd brought with me before I turned back to Derek nearly spitting out the water when I saw he'd suddenly shed his shirt and was doing chin ups in the archway himself...getting a gorgeous look at his abs which were all on show finding myself unable to tear my eyes off them even when he let go and dropped the the ground to do pushups...than one arm pushups...was he showing off or trying to get me into his bed. "Uh Derek-" his head snapped up and before I knew it I was being pulled out of the room and into the hallway hidden behind the stairs.
"Shut up" he told me when I began to question him and he covered my mouth to ensure I didn't right before I heard the door suddenly get kicked in.
"No one home?" I heard a guys voice question.
"Oh he's here" a woman's soon replied. "He's just not feeling particularly hospitable"
"Maybe he's out, burying a bone in the backyard" a younger males voice added and I raised my eyes since that was the worst joke ever.
"Really, a dog joke?" the woman questioned him. "We're going there and that's the best you got" I met Derek's eyes as he stood in front of me still with his hand covering my mouth but he wasn't looking at me seemingly with a haunted look on his face which made me wonder who these people were and why we were hiding from them. "If you want to provoke him, say something like...too bad your sister bit it before she had her first litter" both our heads turned when we heard footsteps coming near our hiding place.
'Stay here, quiet' Derek mouthed at me before letting me go.
"Too bad she howled like a bitch, when we cut her in half!" the woman yelled and I heard Derek let our a growl before a scream followed and he had disappeared allowing me to only hear and judge where he was by the sounds of the struggle that followed and a sickening zapping sound. "Wow...this one grew up in all the right places" I frowned inching closer to the voices trying to be as quiet as I could be so that I didn't alert this woman to my presence and managed to get to an area which allowed me to peer around the corner where I saw the woman standing over Derek who was writhing on the ground. "I don't know whether to kill it or...lick it"
I frowned only able to watch as Derek groaned and attempted to crawl away as the woman persisted in haunting over the top of him with some kind of prod which sounded like it gave off and electric shock and I wish I was able to help and knew I'd only do more harm than good which is why I remained hidden and watching as Derek tried to get up and attack her but she shocked him again laughing sadistically as he went down shaking and groaning in pain.
"Oh...900,000 volts" my eyes widened since that could kill someone. "You never really were good with electricity were you...or fire?" she laughed and my eyes instantly looked around at the house, was this bitch responsible for the Hale fire...that meant that she was a hunter. "Which is why I'm going to let you in on a little secret and well maybe we can help each other out...yes your sister was severed into pieces and used as bait to try to catch you unpleasant and frankly a little too 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' for my tastes but quite true" she laughed making me frown since this bitch was twisted. "Now here's the part that might really kick you in your balls, we didn't kill her" I couldn't see Derek's face from where I stood. "You think I'm lying?"
"Wouldn't be the first time" I heard Derek spit at her which made my frown increase since by that I'm guessing they knew each other.
"Sweetie" she clicked her tongue. "Well, why don't you just listen to my heart and tell me if I am, okay?" I started backing up figuring I should probably get out of here. "We...didn't...kill...your...sister...do you hear that there's no blips or upticks just the steady beat of the cold hard truth" I frowned since it was easy to practice so much that you can lie, people do it with lie detectors all the time. "Found bite marks on your sisters body Derek, what do you think did that...a mountain lion, why arent we helping each other out?" I heard something close. "You might as well admit what you've been guessing all along, which is the Alpha killed your sister and all you have to do is tell us who he is and we'll take care of it for you problem solved, everybody goes home happy" I bit back the scoff. "Unless you don't know who he is either?" I heard her say as I crept towards the back door. "Guess who just became totally useless" I heard the gun start going off and I wasted no time running out of the back door getting as far away from it as I could before I turned back.
"Holy shit" I breathed out since what the hell just happened.
"Mallory!" I turned seeing Derek jogging up towards me.
"Oh my god your okay!" I yelled out since I'd expected him to have at least one bullet hole in him with the amount of shots I'd just heard go off.
"Are you?" he questioned.
"Yeah I ran as soon as the shots started, who the hell was she?" I questioned him.
"An Argent" he replied and I frowned since that bitch was related to Allison.
"Well she's a bitch" I remarked and I swear he smiled just for a second.
"We shouldn't meet at the house anymore" I frowned since he was already giving up on my training, just because that bitch intervened.
"Well we can't exactly meet at my house"
"I know, I'll figure something out but for now I should take you home" my eyes raised a little since he wasn't saying we stop training.
"Okay" we slowly made our way back to his house with him being ever cautious with his senses on high alert but once he was sure that the hunters weren't lingering he ducked inside coming back out with a shirt which I was both relieved and disappointed about, relieved because it was a massive distraction but disappointed that he had covered up.
He drove me home and I thanked him getting out before I headed inside grabbing an apple for that I could test my sugar levels as I headed for my room, Dad was no doubt still at the parent/teacher conferences so I walked past Stiles room and poked my head in.
"Hey Dad's still out, you want me to make anything?" I asked but he either ignored me or didn't hear me so I hit my fist against his door which made him jump so it was the latter. "What are you doing?" I questioned when I saw all the paperwork spread out across his bed.
"Where the hell have you been?" he asked me making me frown and raise an eyebrow. "I've been calling you"
"I haven't gotten any calls?" I asked myself and reached into my jacket pocket but found my phone wasn't there. "What the hell?" I went through my other jacket. "Shit" I cursed. "I lost my phone, dads gonna kill me"
"Where were you?"
"I was...jogging" I lied since I didn't really want him knowing that I was training with Derek because I knew he'd have a problem with it. "So what's all that?" I nodded my head at the papers as I walked into his room.
"The Hale fire" he replied which made me frown and sit down picking up the county record reading through it, 'eight family members deceased'...'electrical malfunction: possible arson' and saw that it matched the field incident report as well.
"Why are you looking into it?" I questioned looking up at him.
"I think it might be connected"
"With the Alpha?" he nodded and I frowned shaking my head since I didn't want to believe that. "Well I'm gonna leave you to it, I don't want to go looking into the fire it brings up memories I'd rather keep buried" I sighed standing up and left heading to my room munching on the apple before I got started on my homework then went to bed.
