A/N: This chapter will be a bit shorter than the last. As always, let me know if you have any questions/suggestions, or feedback. Just remember to be gentle.
"It could be worst."
Frowning slightly, she tried not to glare at her childhood best friend. Really?
"How?" With a exhausted sigh, Kagome continued to explain her frustrations.
"Sango—seven years that—"
"That you allowed him to treat you that way." The woman beside her held an accusatory tone while going through what looked like a bunch of admin paperwork. Squinting further and being nosey, Kagome noticed that it seemed to be a mix of new hire paperwork and contracts. Was their company downsizing? For a moment, She wanted to reroute the conversation to what Sango was doing.
"Is everything alright?" To that, her best friend looked up, confused at such a question. Following Kagome's gaze, she let out a small laugh of understanding.
"Oh, yeah. It's fine. We just had a whole team be terminated. Apparently, trying to keep up a team of both demons and human isn't without complications." Her tone had been casual, but Kagome had already noticed the bags under her friends eyes and the sheer exhaustion her body was radiating.
What had happened?
"That bad?" Kagome hadn't meant to change the subject, but now curiosity filled her. For now, the drama and breakup could wait. Instead, she needed to make sure her friend was okay.
"Let's just say HR is having a field day with it, and dad, well, he's not worried in the least bit."
Nodding in understanding, she thought back to her best friend's father. Now that Sango had mentioned it, Kagome didn't know if she'd ever witnessed the man ever be worried about anything. In fact, even when everyone tended to panic, he had always been calm and collected.
"Dads already got a new team pickedo out, and it's almost as if he knew this other team would fuck up. I don't know. I just handle the paperwork. Now, back to you." The tone in Sangos voice was serious, but she let out a laugh to let her know that despite everything, she was fine.
"Obviously, we broke up." Kagome didn't know how else to break it, and with the announcement, she half expected Sango to halt everything she was doing and probe further.
Instead, her friend continued working, and without skipping a beat, asked only one question.
"Hopefully for real this time?" Unable to control herself, Kagome snorted at the tough love her friend was providing.
"Don't get me wrong, Kags, the dog, is an asshole. However, you let the behavior slide. From now on, know your worth. Please?" With a smirk, Sango threw some more papers in the shredder. Watching her friend review some timecards, she wanted to ask her if there was something else on her mind. Sango was usually happy and always full of energy. Now, she seemed exhausted and barely able to partake in their current conversation.
As if noting that Kagome was overanalyzing her, Sango spoke up.
"I can't believe he blamed it on his pedigree—what a...dog." This time, Kagome couldn't help but let out a laugh. If nothing else, Sango would always provide herself with a dose of harsh truths and unfiltered viewpoints of any and all given situations.
"Still, I wonder if it's actually a thing..."
Apparently, the 'excuse' had both of them curious.
"I mean, Sango, his whole family..." Kagome began explaining what little insight she had on the entire situation.
"Could simply be a bunch of shitty strays."
Okay, that was fair.
She was right. It was most definitely possible.
After all, the Tashio household was full of privilege and wealth. So, why wouldn't that span into the realm of infidelity? Maybe the entire family had just lived so long without being told 'no' that they forgot the meaning of such a word? Or maybe, they had simply grown used to doing whatever they wanted at the expense of everyone else's emotions. Instead of it being genetic, why couldn't it be environmental? Did his entire family having the same infidelity traits mean that such a thing was beyond their control, or did it simply mean that there was clearly a lack of fucks given to those that they promised forever with?
"So, what's your plan? Revenge? Indifference?" Kagome laughed at the excitement her friend's tone held. She wanted to know what came next, and to be fair, so did she.
What did come next?
Surely not another relationship.
But, if nothing else, he had made her realize something.
In a world full of so many races, Kagome really had not spent enough time learning about those around her. A mistake she wanted to remedy immediately.
"I don't know; his excuse really stayed with me. I can't help but wonder if there's truth in it—and if there is, I want to know. I don't think getting into another relationship would be smart until I know more."
She wanted to explain why the words wouldn't leave her. But she couldn't find the best way to explain such a thing. Yet, it seemed Sango didn't need an explanation.
"Staying with team demons instead of humans? How shocking." The playful tone told her, that if anything, the last thing Sango felt was actual shock. Rolling her eyes at her friend, she refused to acknowledge such a judgmental statement.
But, again, what if she was right?
What if, after seven years, she had come to have a preference that excluded humans?
Suddenly, Sango seemed to perk up with an idea.
"What about a job?"
A job?
How would that help?
Apparently, Sango was about to explain.
"Like I was saying, we just terminated a whole team and are getting ready to bring on a new one. There's still a position available. Did I mention that the team that's getting revamped is the K-9 department?" Unable to help herself, Kagome Higurashi let out a laugh at the irony of the entire situation. Briefly, she considered the information that was presented to her.
"Are you serious? What's the role? Sango, i'm probably not even qualitied." Even as she said such things, she though back to her education. A degree in Business Administration was probably not going to cut it. So, why had her friend even suggested such a thing?
Sango smirked. "Admin assistant. Nice and easy and plenty of time for...research."
Scoffing, Kagome quickly came to the conclusion that she had once again misjudged her friend. Had she had this planned from the beginning? Before she had even come over? Although, if she was being honest with herself this opportunity that was being presented was nothing short of perfect. With that revelation, she considered such an offer and what it would require of her.
A position with an all-canine unit? Something like this did not usually drop in ones lap? Especially for a human.
"Do you think he would—" but she didn't get to finish. Within seconds of her speaking, Sango grinned and seemed to be typing up a message on her phone knowing all too well what her question was. And just like that, the sound of a text notification came through.
"His office tomorrow? He said he's got to do an interview for appearances but that he couldn't think of a better candidate for the position." The knowing smirk and playful eyes that screamed of victory stared back at her while her friend waited for her decision.
"Tomorrow?! What time?"
Understanding the question as confirmation, Sango let out a yip of excitement.
"1400 in his office. I'll take you."
With that, Sango changed her tone and gave her an all too serious face.
"Kagome, I think this is going to be perfect for you."
Unknown to the poor priestess, her best friend had not revealed the full details of the position or what it entailed. For now, she left certain details out.
After all, that would be the best part of overseeing this adventure.
