Chapter 36: One of the Smarter Moves

Lianna, The City, 0 BBY, 10 months, 12 days, 20 hours

Countess Ry Kyver and Duchess Ana Capra (who had become fast friends after first meeting each other some nine months prior) were sharing the evening meal at a small restaurant in the upscale area of Lianna City, not far from Valles's urban palace, on Palmyra Boulevard. The eatery, Il Sapore, was one that sourced its produce directly from Ana's estate (among others) and featured many light and appetizing dishes of the kind favored in the tropics of Lianna. Ry complimented the cuisine.

"Ana, I must say, this has been a place that I've overlooked in my years on Lianna. If I hadn't gotten to know you, I might still be unawares … it's quite delectable."

Ana laughed. "Well, I'm glad I could introduce it to you. The name simply means The Taste and that's what they want people to remember."

"I'm surprised Valles never recommended it to me, it's hard to imagine she doesn't know it."

Ana laughed again. "I'm not sure it's really her thing … if you haven't noticed, she tends to put away a lot of food and yet never seems to gain more than a few grams."

"One of her many mysteries," Ry chuckled.

The light banter continued, and then someone called out Ry's name from a nearby table. The countess craned her neck to get a glimpse and soon realized it was "Lady" Qi'ra of the Black Sun (or was it Crimson Dawn … they seemed to be overlapping) organization. Ry turned to Ana, "there's someone I think you ought to meet."

Ana also peered over and saw a slender dark-haired woman coming toward their table, walking with a slight swagger. Qi'ra was becoming ever more accomplished in the Galactic underworld but was now starting to use her capital to establish herself in more above-board activities. Once the Corellian arrived, Ry introduced them to each other.

"Pleased to meet you, Miss Qi'ra. I'm Duchess Ana of Livornia. It's in a tropical region on Lianna."

Qi'ra smiled and nodded. "Duchess, the pleasure is mine," as she gave a slight curtsy as deference to Ana's title.

"Qi'ra is originally from Corellia," Ry noted, "but it's been many years since she lived there."

Ana laughed. "I should hope so … no offense, but I would gather you take a certain pride in that?"

"None taken, Lady Ana. Indeed I do. When I had the chance to get out of there, I took it and never looked back. Now I spend much time on Lianna, in the City."

Ry motioned for Qi'ra to join them. "Have you eaten yet?"

Qi'ra shook her head. "I was just looking over the menu. It seems interesting. What do you recommend?"

Ana spoke up. "Perhaps you might like the fajoli and tempresta. They make a fine combination of tropical flavors."

As she studied the menu, Qi'ra was intrigued. "Thank you, milady, I'll give it a try." She then asked for an ale, which was quickly furnished.

After her food arrived, Ana then asked Qi'ra what they could do for her. The Corellian chuckled, then smiled.

"It's what I can do for you, as Ry can surely attest."

Ry nodded. "Yes, she introduced us to a doonium ore extraction firm, which gave Valles some assistance in procuring what we needed."

Ana then noted, seriously, "she mentioned something about that. Said that the countess here came up with a way for our metallurgists to fabricate the finished product after we had purchased a few thousand tons of raw ore."

Qi'ra seemed impressed. "The genius of Santhé Corp must never be underestimated. But I want to propose a partnership – informal in nature – between your organization and ours."

Ana laughed softly. "Oh? How exactly might this work?"

"We both know that it's impossible to know what our needs might be in the years to come, and, given the nature of Santhé Corp and its various divisions, we think our organization can be a natural partner – a good fit, as it were …"

"I would have to run this by Valles, of course. But we are open to … shall we say, exploration, of potential mutual interests."

Ry kept silent, carefully observing how Ana wanted to handle this. From the duchess's standpoint, she wanted to learn more even though she suspected that Qi'ra was involved with the syndicates in some fashion – even without Ry telling her as much. She decided to wrap the meeting and set up a follow-through.

Qi'ra calmly finished her meal, complimenting the chefs. Ana thanked her as she mentioned the tie-in with her own gardens and groves on her estate.

"Very well, then, Miss Qi'ra. Let's set up a return meeting after I discuss this with Valles. Knowing her as I do, I feel confident that she would be open to back-channel discussions between us. Can you give me the name of your operating partner?"

Qi'ra gave a sly smile. "You may know of him. Valles certainly does – Prince Xizor of Falleen."

"And a Black Sun Vigo, I understand, yes?"

Ry nodded slowly as Ana glanced her way, while Qi'ra just smiled.

"I'm looking forward to it," Ana added. She then stood, indicating the meal had concluded. As she and Ry walked out together and dialed up a speeder, which took them to a landing platform at the top of a 100-story building a few km away from the Santhé Tower. Ana had a luxury apartment on the 89th level that included three bedrooms and plenty of office space for those times she wanted to be in the City. When they entered, Ry was favorably impressed with the décor and luxury furnishings.

"Care for a nightcap, Countess?" Ana asked in a friendly manner.

"Don't mind if I do …" Ry smiled. "Have you some Corp-sec whisky?"

"Coming up."

Ana used the Force to grab two glasses and pour a finger of the liquor into each of them, along with a single large cube of ice that had a hollow interior. She then floated one over to Ry.

"You know," Ana chuckled, "It's nice to be able to operate this way in private … with someone who basically understands."

"Indeed," Ry laughed.

Ana sipped her drink, savoring the flavor. Ry winked at her, and did the same. It was clear the two of them were very much in sync and had come to see each other as allies.

"So, Ry, does this make sense to you? You seem to know her. Getting into bed with Black Sun seems a little dodgy."

"I agree, but Valles has done business with them before. She's likely to approve this, so long as we keep things low key."

"So what exactly do they specialize in … or is that a dumb question?" Ana laughed.

"They don't, exactly," Ry laughed in return. "But that's what makes them useful. Black Sun is kind of unique in the Galaxy. Their structure encourages competition and at the present time, there is no top leader."

"Hmm, does that mean … this guy Xizor is trying to make more of a name for himself? I think I see now why Valles would do business with them; they aim to please her."

Ry took a swig of the whisky, then sucked on the ice cube for a second, enjoying the texture. She thought for a second about how Ana always seemed to do the little things right.

"Exactly. That's why they called Valles back when I was wanted by bounty hunters and the Empire had a price on my head. Xizor knew Valles would match it and then go even higher. You see, she knew I was an agricultural expert and she wanted to increase food production and grow that part of the business for Santhé Corp. It surprised me at first, because, like many others, we thought of them as mostly being involved in weapons production. But she had a vision and we both know what it's turned out to be. I owe almost everything to her foresight in seeing where I could help her."

Ana sighed. "Quite a story, my friend. Now I'm getting a bigger picture here. Ry, we are going to accomplish a lot together, I just know it."

"I agree. So should we meet with her together? I think it might be more effective. She'd see that you are on board with the idea and be more impressed."

"Yes. But let's get our Malachor survey info together first. That's what she asked us to do."

"Okay … so do you concur? That planet could easily be transformed into a lush paradise if we were to make some adjustments to the atmosphere. More water would be key."

Ana nodded. "Exactly. And the seismic situation there is relatively stable compared with many nearby worlds. There's just one thing I'm curious about."

"What's that?"

"Those Sith artifacts we ran across. Where do you suppose they came from?"

"I did some recent research in the archives here on Lianna. It seems that Malachor has a lot of interesting history. And there seems to be some record of a temple once existing there."

"Funny, though, Ry … what might have happened to it?"

"Ana, my senses told me something major, and not that long ago."

"Like, perhaps, some type of explosion?"

"It's possible. I'm not entirely sure."

The two of them finished their drinks and Ana felt tired and wanted to turn in for the night. She offered Ry the option of sleeping in her guest room, but the Mandalorian didn't want to impose and decided to return to her suite in the urban palace. The two agreed to approach Valles soon and then, if she agreed, to go to Falleen and meet with Xizor and Qi'ra directly. As she left the apartment tower, Ry had the feeling a new vista was opening in front of her. She slept soundly that night as she considered where it might lead.

Lianna, Valles's office, 0 BBY, 9 months, 5 days, 10 hours

Darth Vader's TIEx1 ship arrived on Lianna and went straight to Valles's office platform where he usually preferred to debark. He'd called ahead to ensure that she had time for him, and received a reply to proceed and that she would be happy to see him. After the encounter with Shaak, Ahsoka, and Maris he was a bit shaken and not sure exactly where he stood. Valles could provide the answers he was looking for – at least, he felt she could. The unanswered question of course, was where she stood. Was she truly loyal to the Emperor or was she playing for time? How much did Valles know about Shaak's operation, wherever it was based? Vader wasn't sure, but believed that he and Valles had made some kind of connection. So he took the risk and believed it would pay off. Once he knew both Valles and Shaak were going to quietly support him, he felt he could proceed and take steps to maintain Palpatine's seeming trust in him.

Showing more deference than usual, he stepped into her office and complimented her bright red dress and matching heels. Her luxurious hair was down and oozing a sweet-smelling fragrance that he found intoxicating. When he kissed her hand, he felt a tingle – likely enhanced by her own Force manipulations – and was truly thrilled to see her.

"What can I do for you?" Valles asked gently.

"My Lady. Some things have happened to me recently, and I think you should know. I'm hoping this won't change our relationship. Lady Santhé, I have come to see you as a friend, one of the only ones I have in the entire Galaxy."

Valles was a bit alarmed by this – as it was not his usual demeanor – but she concealed it.

"Anakin, please sit down and tell me what's going on."

She had already asked for a canister of cold water in advance, and levitated it over to him. He gratefully took it and started to drink. Finally, he was ready to talk.

"Valles … a few weeks back … I was ambushed and taken captive. It was my old apprentice Ahsoka Tano, but she had help. Some very powerful help."

Valles nodded, and a crafty smile started to turn at the corners of her mouth. She recrossed her legs and made a show of smoothing her "power red" dress, which of course caught his attention.

"I see," she muttered. "Go on."

"I'm not sure if you are familiar with Shaak Ti, but she is the one that engineered my capture. She told me that she could heal me completely if I joined with her and Ahsoka. Otherwise, I had the distinct feeling she was going to finish me off."

Valles then shook her head.

"I don't think so, my friend. You see, I have met this Shaak Ti. And her power is indeed formidable, but she wants the Emperor to think you are still with him. I don't know what she told you, but from what I've seen, you can believe it."

Vader seemed incredulous. Here it was, in plain sight – Valles was running her own game and the Empire was a second thought, unless she had envisioned something else entirely … he decided to ask her about her intentions, not sure if she would be completely honest.

"My Lady, are you and Shaak Ti working together?"

"Not exactly, but she is an ally … of sorts. But let me cut to the chase, so to speak. I want you to proceed as normal. Stand by the Empire, support Palpatine and oversee development on the Project. I will continue to play the same role as I have been and so will my organization. Whatever you are doing with Shaak is between you both, as is any role Ahsoka might play. I will be the only one that knows the full extent of things."

Vader nodded, not quite understanding Valles's long game, but inwardly relieved that she would not divulge his status to anyone else. From what she had told him, his role was clear: play the dutiful apprentice to the Emperor and aggressively defend the Death Star project. Whatever else would happen was out of his hands.

"So, do we understand each other, Anakin?"

"We do, my Lady."

"Very well, then. Let us proceed." She paused for a second, then added. "Was there anything else you wanted to tell me? It seems, on the whole, you are feeling much better. Did she have anything to do with that?"

Vader stifled a laugh, not something he was normally in the habit of doing. "She has attended to my needs."

Valles just smiled. "Has she? Well, good for you. I hope it lasts."

Realizing the meeting was over, as Valles doubtlessly had other things to attend to, Vader rose, then bowed to her and briefly knelt before her. She offered her right hand and he took it gently for her customary kiss.

"Thank you, dear Lady Valles. I will keep you apprised of my progress."

"Very well, Anakin. Until we meet again."

With that, Vader rose and headed back to the landing platform. He decided to head for Mustafar and some further meditation.

Lianna, Valles's office, 0 BBY, 7 months, 20 days, 12 hours

Valles was getting ready to leave for lunch when she received a transmission on her private com. Picking it up, she soon noticed it was from the former ISB agent Aleksandr Kallus.

"Good morning, Alex. Have you got news for me?"

"Indeed, my Lady. I'm in the City now. Do you have some time?"

"Sure. Proceed to my office. I will tell them I'm expecting you."

About fifteen minutes later, Kallus had arrived at the 215th level, and was greeted by Lasivia Borges, whom Valles instructed to meet him in the reception area and personally lead him to her office. She waited for him in the lounge area. As he was shown in, he bowed to Valles and immediately was seated as he could see she was in a more serious mood than usual.

"First," she noted, "I hadn't heard from you for a while. How did it go with Thrawn?"

"About a month or so after that – the last time we talked – he discovered my duplicity and attempted to do away with me, but my rebel friends helped me escape."

Valles chuckled. "I see … Well, so, I suppose a few more things have happened, or you wouldn't be here, taking up my luncheon time."

Kallus laughed. "Sorry about that …"

Valles resumed her somewhat stern expression. "Well, go on, then. Tell me everything."

"Lady Santhé, first, there were some things that took place which I don't entirely understand, having to do with the strange phenomenon known as the Force."

Valles softened her expression and chuckled. "That's fine. Do your best."

"My Lady, it seemed to be decided on miscalculations by Imperial forces. Arihnda Pryce completely underestimated the resolve and talent of my friends on the rebel side. But she clearly figured that once Thrawn showed up with three ISD, they could easily put down the revolt."

Valles smiled wryly. "So what exactly happened? I'd heard that Thrawn's entire battle group is missing, and the Imperial forces on Lothal were essentially routed."

"It was more of a combination of circumstances, mi-lady. The rebel strategy was to fake a "protocol 13" order that recalled all Imperial personnel to the dome – which was actually a large ship that had been stationed on the ground near the capital city. Once they were aboard, the plan was to have that dome-ship lift off and leave Lothal entirely."

"But then Thrawn showed up?"

"Yes. And he gave the order to start bombardment of Lothal Capital City. At that point, one of our people, the young Jedi Ezra Bridger, went aboard Thrawn's flagship, the Chimaera."

"Why would he do that?" Valles asked, her mind working.

"We weren't entirely sure, but he had a plan – one that he only told maybe one or two people about."

"What was the plan?"

"At first, we couldn't tell, but then, all of a sudden, out of hyperspace, a large group of creatures appeared. Not long after, these creatures surrounded the three ships. TIE fighters were launched but the creatures destroyed all of them, and then broke up two of the ISD."

Valles gasped. "What sort of creatures were they? This seems like absolute fantasy …"

"I would agree, Lady Santhé, if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes. Anyway, they left Thrawn's ship intact, but surrounded it. We found out later that the creatures responded to Bridger. He has some kind of connection to them. Once the Chimaera was surrounded, they soon jumped to hyperspace and disappeared. No one knows where they are now."

Valles shook her head in amazement. "Tell me more about this Ezra Bridger. He sounds most remarkable. And … I'd heard there were originally two Jedi with the rebels. What happened to his cohort?"

"That would be Kanan Jarrus, mi-lady. He perished while saving the lives of his fellow rebels a few days earlier. It seems that Pryce ordered the fuel depot on Lothal destroyed in an attempt to kill the rebels, but only Jarrus died. It was an act of selfless courage."

"I'd like to know why Pryce made such a colossal blunder," Valles muttered. "But what happened after the creatures left with Bridger and Thrawn?"

"Our forces had planted detonators in the dome. The remaining rebels caused the ship to lift off, while they got away in their own ship, the one called Ghost. We offered Pryce a chance to get off the dome but she refused. Once the ship reached the upper atmosphere, we set off the detonators and it blew up, taking Pryce with it."

Valles scoffed. "Probably just as well. I would have had her court-marshalled and put on trial had she lived. Just a complete and utter fail on her part."

Kallus remained silent, waiting for her to finish. She rose to her feet and walked over toward the window and gazed outside while she reviewed what he had told her.

After a couple of seconds, Valles added, "well, that does it for my plans on Lothal. I'm not throwing good money after bad. The Defender series will be moved to a new location."

She then walked back into the lounge and asked, "what is the name for those creatures, did you learn that?"

"Yes, actually. One of the rebels – the pilot, Hera Syndulla – referred to them as the Purrgil."

Valles racked her brain, then walked over to her desk and entered the name into one of the screens that she always had on. As she perused the info and thought about it, she then remembered something her grandfather had told her when she was about ten years old.

They yanked us right out of hyperspace. What did we do? The only thing we could. Set a new course and got the Force out of there – we literally had just seconds to spare.

She then had another thought. So who is this Bridger fellow and why does he have some type of intimate connection with these creatures … and where are he and Thrawn now?

Kallus then asked, "do you need anything else from me, Lady Santhé?"

She didn't answer at first, her mind deep in thought. After a few more seconds, she seemed to snap out of it. Valles walked back over to the lounge area and reclaimed her earlier seat.

"Just one thing, Alex. Where is the rebel base now?"

He winced at this, wondering whether, if he told her, she might just lead the Empire over to Yavin IV and snuff out the rebellion with one swift stroke. He mentally crossed his fingers and told her.

"A moon around the gas giant planet Yavin, mi-lady."

Valles smiled. "Very well. The secret is safe with me. I have no intention of divulging this to anyone." But you can bet I will be paying Master Shaak Ti a visit, and very soon.

She then rose, as did he. Kallus bowed to her and then kissed her right hand, per custom.

"Good day, my friend. I appreciate you bringing me up to speed on everything."

As she watched Kallus leave, she went to her desk and checked the screens. A thought came to her head and she pulled out her com, then checked her list for a contact and called it.

"Ana? Yes. How are you and Ry coming along with the status on that planet I asked for? … I see. Well, I need to meet with both of you, and fairly soon … thank you, will see you in three days, at Santhia. Until then."

Felucia, Shaak's home, 0 BBY, 7 months 18 days

First, Valles contacted Duchess Berit and called her to the City. They met in an underground conference room five levels below the street under the Santhé Tower. It was late night, and Valles was dressed in her tight-fitting catsuit, with her black and red cloak, and Berit was similarly attired, although her cloak was lined in blue.

Valles first recounted all that Kallus had told her about the events on Lothal, after having followed up with some other contacts on the planet. She soon learned that one-time governor Ryder Azadi had moved quickly to take over the planet with the Imperial presence having vacated. After contacting Azadi, Valles told him she would back his bid for leadership if he would agree to join with the alliance being put together by Santhé Corp. Although all weapons and munitions operations were being removed, Valles saw a future role for Lothal in her operations and the planet would be taken under her wing, so to speak. Azadi thought it over and realized this was the best arrangement they could hope for and Valles assured him that she saw no reason to station any replacement Imperial garrisons. Azadi agreed to come to Lianna to sign a formalization of their agreement and Duchess Ana Capra and Countess Ry Kyver were both there to witness it. Lothal would soon come under the purview of Ana and she quickly delegated the role to Countess Kyver. For Ry, it meant another rise in salary and responsibility. Azadi agreed to work with Ry and they seemed to be in general agreement. Ry in turn assured him that her role would be in the background and saw no reason that the Lothalians couldn't basically manage their own affairs so long as they remained loyal to Lianna and Valles Santhé.

With that in hand, Valles told Berit about Ezra and the Purrgil and the implications of them.

Berit then asked, "Valles, are we going to contact Master Ti on this? It would seem to be indicated."

"Indeed we are, my dear Berit."

Valles then transmitted a call to Felucia and Shaak responded.

"Good evening, Lady Valles, what can I do for you?"

"Shaak, I need to pay you a visit in the next hour or so. Will that work for you? I wouldn't bother you unless it was a matter of extreme importance."

After a few seconds, Shaak replied. "That will be fine. How will you be coming?"

"My yacht will be in orbit. We will descend to the surface in a two-person craft. Duchess Berit is accompanying me."

"I will see you soon. Safe travels, Lady Valles."

Shaak then contacted the Order members in her blockhouse and told them that Valles's yacht would be orbiting Felucia but not to be concerned. They were guests of the Grand Master of the Order and that was all they needed to know.

She then contacted Maris.

"Maris, my dear. I will be receiving guests tonight and we should not be bothered."

"Sure, Master. Do I need to know who they are?"

"Yes. It will be Valles Santhé and her assistant, Duchess Berit, also from Lianna. I am privately working with both of them now. Valles is quietly supporting the rebellion while openly running the Outer Rim territories for the Empire. Most of the Imperial Navy is at her disposal on the Outer Rim."

Maris took a deep breath as she thought about the implications of that, then asked, "Master Shaak, it seems we are getting in deeper now. Can we trust Valles?"

"We can. But I'm not going to divulge more than that at this time."

"Okay, Master. I will ensure you are not disturbed while she is here. How will they be arriving?"

"Valles's yacht will be in orbit around Felucia. She and her assistant will take a small craft and land near my home."

"Got it."

Shaak then ended the conversation and went to meditate while she awaited the arrival of her guests. During this time, Ahsoka was away on the planet Almania with both of her apprentices.

About one- and one-half hours later, the Belladonna dropped from hyperspace and settled into orbit. Valles and Berit, still in their catsuits and cloaks, boarded the small shuttle craft and descended to the Felucian surface. They landed within fifteen minutes as Valles carefully maneuvered after receiving the heading from Shaak. The Togruta master came out from her small home and observed the craft as it landed. Soon, Valles and Berit were descending the ramp as the hatch opened. Shaak was there to greet them, in a heavy black velvet robe over her layers of silk. It was well past midnight and the temperature had dropped considerably from the steamy afternoon and early evening.

"Good evening, Master Ti," Berit said softly, and Valles joined in.

"Right this way, ladies," Shaak chuckled. "Good to see you both. I do hope you've been doing well."

"Never better, Shaak, my friend," Valles chirped, as her hostess led them into her home and pointed to seats for each.

"Might I get you something? A hot tea, perhaps, to take the edge off the chill of the night?" Shaak asked. "Many don't know but it can get chilly quickly here at night."

"Don't mind if I do," Berit laughed. "It does indeed."

Valles nodded as well, while Shaak used the Force to summon two mugs and pour some of her brew into them from the kitchen. Soon, both Berit and Valles were warming their insides with the hearty blend.

"So, to what do I owe this visit?" Shaak laughed. "Not that I mind, of course, but I got the distinct feeling something has happened recently and I want to understand what it is."

"Yes, you would be correct, Master," Valles intoned gently. "But I might as well get right into it. About ten days ago, perhaps, some interesting developments took place in the Lothal system and the Empire took it on the chin. We lost at least two ISD capital ships and a third has simply disappeared. Plus the entire garrison we had stationed on the planet was blown to bits by the rebellion. Just thought you might like to know."

Shaak watched both women, looking for clues about how much they knew. After a somewhat awkward silence, which was a favorite technique of hers meant to gauge the level of anxiety or uncertainty in the room, Shaak spoke.

"I am aware of nearly all of these happenings. They were reported to me soon afterward."

Valles stared at her for a second, then weighed in. "Shaak, what can you tell us about these … Purrgil, I believe they are called?"

"A most unique species, indeed," the Togruta answered. "But of course, I've had a few encounters with them in the past, going back to my time in the Jedi before I had joined the High Council. One of my abilities involves communicating with various forms of animal life, some of which usually terrify most humans. An example would be the rancor species, which happens to be native to this planet."

Shaak took a sip from her own beverage, then continued. "I am interested, no, more gratified, that young Ezra has apparently cultivated this ability in himself. I would very much like to take over his further training, once he returns from wherever he and the admiral have gone."

Upon hearing this, Valles gained a new appreciation for Shaak's level of power and ability. So, who am I kidding? Of course you knew, my dear Shaak, and together we will be most formidable. She decided to play another card.

"Shaak, recently, Darth Vader paid me a visit on Lianna, in my office. I like to think of him as Anakin Skywalker, because I had briefly known him as such during the War. He told me that he had decided to join up with you, and that someone named Ahsoka Tano – a name I keep hearing – had ambushed him in the Almania system."

Shaak smiled again, then waited. Seeing that Valles was waiting for her, she then answered.

"Oh, yes. I came to a decision regarding him. It was clear to me that Palpatine had taken full advantage of him and turned him into something approaching a cyborg. A most unfortunate set of circumstances, and one that I was not fully aware of prior to our encounter. But we seem to have reached an agreement. Much the same as you have, Lady Valles. And let me add that I am also in agreement that he will continue to profess allegiance to the Empire."

Valles nodded, but then asked. "Master Shaak, you mentioned something a minute ago, something you want to understand. Could you possibly go into greater detail on that for us?"

Shaak chuckled. "Valles, I think you answered any questions I had. I was more curious to learn whether you had some information that I did not. It doesn't seem that way now, but tell me this much – I had come to understand that Lothal was yet another inhabitable planet that had become a de-facto protectorate of Lianna. Do you intend to keep it that way, despite the rebellion?"

Valles smiled. "We do. The Lothalians were more opposed to what they saw as heavy-handed Imperial rule. That is not the Liannese way. All of the worlds in our orbit are there because they see the benefits of the arrangement – peace and prosperity and an orderly progress. Ask any Liannese citizen if she or he wants a change and very few will tell you yes."

"I see …" Shaak muttered. "And no doubt, you feel you can keep things in balance. I wish you well on this endeavor, Lady Valles."

Valles simply nodded and gazed into Shaak's eyes, but they were opaque and unyielding. "I appreciate your support, Master Ti," was all she said. Berit looked around the room, slightly nervous, as she could see Shaak was rather complex and not an easy person to readily size up. Shaak glanced at her for a second and smiled.

"Might I ask you one thing, though? Shaak, how do you rebels intend to govern this Galaxy, should it come to that?"

Shaak laughed. "A worthwhile question, to be sure. Some might tell you they want to reestablish the Republic, but that will not be easy, and the Empire is indeed vast and very well armed. We might take down a ship or two, but that hardly seems to matter when compared to the size of the fleet."

Valles tried to suppress a smirk, but Shaak wasn't fooled.

The Liannese then thought about it: You're a smart one, that's for sure. And even though you may not quite see it yet, I'm sure you will sooner or later. Shaak Ti, you're going to be useful to me, I can see it. So I will do what is needed to help you and your little rebellion. "Well, that's certainly true, and I'm guessing the best chance for the rebels is a general lack of confidence in the Empire to govern effectively."

Shaak nodded. "Hard to see how that happens now, but they seem likely to overplay their hand. We've talked about the battle station project. That would provide them with the ability to quickly snuff out pockets of resistance."

Valles then responded. "But they can do that now, considering the fleet and all."

"But what of Lothal?" Shaak pointed out. "That would seem to provide more ammunition to those who want to use the station to lay down the law wherever they think it's necessary."

Valles then rose and Shaak did as well. "We're not going to settle the Galaxy here tonight," the Liannese Grand Duchess noted. "But it's been quite illuminating spending time with you, as always, Master Ti. Berit, my friend, would you like to add your thoughts?"

The blonde duchess laughed as she too got to her feet. "I think you both have covered it all, Valles. I would simply say that the project is moving along and should be complete in just a few months. That could well render this discussion strictly academic."

With that, Shaak walked the two Liannese ladies back to their shuttle. "Safe travels, Valles. You too, Berit. I've enjoyed your company tonight – as always."

Lianna, the City, underground in the Santhé Tower, 0 BBY, 7 months, 17 days

After the Belladonna returned to Liannese orbit, Berit took a shuttle down to her palace, while Valles returned to the Tower. Waiting for her underground, in her secret bunker, was Darth Vader, whom she had contacted earlier. Still in her black outfit, Vader greeted her warmly as he soon detected her potent Force signature.

"Anakin! I'm glad you were able to join me on such short notice. Was it out of the way for you?"

"Not at all, Lady Valles. What is thy bidding?"

"Only this …" She proceeded to fill him in on the events on Lothal and especially the strange disappearance of Thrawn.

When she had finished, Vader shook his head in amazement. "Bridger? That seems hard to believe. His power has clearly grown. Thrawn had to be most impressed, if not shocked."

"Yes, I know what you mean. But we cannot overlook it. Already Shaak was telling me earlier tonight that she would like to take over his training."

"I can see why," Vader said slowly. "But with Jarrus gone, Bridger's ties to his rebel friends have somewhat loosened, it would seem."

"I'm not so sure, Anakin. But we'll just need to wait until he returns, whenever that might be." She paused for a minute, considering an angle, then added, "I want you to keep the details of this from the Imperial brass. They don't need to know about Thrawn and Bridger. Of course, they are going to want to avenge the deaths of Pryce and the others on Lothal. But I have decided to remove all Santhé Corp weapon making and munitions from the planet, and allow a measure of self-government, provided they stay loyal to Lianna."

"Your wish is my command, my Lady. Tarkin and the others need not be concerned. But, if I may, I would suggest their minds are on the Project now, anyway. I've recently accompanied Duchess Ana on her recent review of the construction. It seems Tarkin is rather fond of her."

Valles smirked. "As well he should be … never a bad look for him to be seen with Liannese high nobility. Everything seems to be falling into place for the Moff. I'm going to recommend him for promotion to Grand Moff of the Outer Rim and my second-in-command."

"That will likely go to his head, my Lady."

She laughed. "You catch on quick, Anakin. Let's see how he handles it."

Falleen, Prince Xizor's office, 0 BBY, 6 months, 16 days

Lady Qi'ra had just arrived from Lianna and went straight to see Xizor. As she took a seat in front of his desk, he offered her a freshly loaded spice pipe. As she lit the bowl and took a hit, she was favorably impressed.

"Ah, this is a good blend."

"I knew you would appreciate it …" he hissed. "Now, what news do you have for me? Are the Liannese ready to play ball with us?"

She exhaled a cloud of sweet-smelling smoke. "I believe so, your highness. Our friend Ry has been working with one of the high duchesses on the planet. She's very prosperous and would like to become even more so."

"You think she might be ready to make a sizable investment? Say, a billion credits, perhaps?"

Qi'ra smiled. "It seems a distinct possibility."

"Then you may present that mining opportunity to them."

"Happy to do it, Xi … but we'll need something impressive, to show the Duchess we are players. Perhaps your palace on Falleen?"

The prince snorted. "It's more of a gentleman's pleasure abode … not really the kind of place a refined lady like her would appreciate."

Qi'ra chuckled. "I don't know. Ana seems very relaxed, not at all snooty. But she's interested in power and wealth, like most on her planet."

Xizor re-lit the bowl and took a deep draw, then exhaled. The smoke rose to the ceiling of his office as he reflected on things. "Can't say I blame her. Duchess Ana seems like our gal. Most Liannese are always trying to climb the social ladder there and those near the top have quite a view from their apartment towers in the City. I'm looking forward to meeting her."

"Well, you won't have long to wait. Her yacht should be here in a couple of hours. Why don't we head over to your place?"

When the Concordia dropped from hyperspace two hours later, Ana asked the captain to orbit the planet for a couple of rotations. Ry then contacted Qi'ra down on the surface.

"We're here, just tell us where to land our shuttle."

A voice answered back. "Concordia shuttle, please proceed to the indicated heading for your landing. You will be arriving at Prince Xizor's country estate. We welcome the esteemed Duchess of Lianna to our world."

Ana laughed. "Well, that seems like a hearty welcome. I've certainly experienced far less."

"As have I," Ry chuckled. "Let's see what the prince has for us. I must admit I am curious."

Ry eased the shuttle into the designated landing spot, and the two of them debarked, both wearing informal dresses in black (Ana) and red (Ry). Soon, they were greeted by Qi'ra, who was also in a frock, this one a pale blue. The three smiled at each other and exchanged some light banter as they entered the somewhat rustic "palace." Prince Xizor's rural abode somewhat resembled an Aspen ski chalet, though considerably larger. Everywhere there were wood panels and various gear hung from the ceilings to give it a sporty feel and the mood was most informal. Their host came out to greet them wearing dark trousers and a heavy sweater.

"Good afternoon, ladies, and welcome to the Lodge."

The four of them walked together into a large sitting area, and Xizor offered them ales and a few light snacks to munch on while they talked. Ana calmly looked around and took in the scene, as Xizor introduced himself.

"Pleased to meet you, Duchess, I'm Xizor."

"The same, my Lord. I'm Ana Capra, Duchess of Livornia, on the southern hemisphere of Lianna. I like the feel of your estate. It's different, but most welcoming."

"I appreciate that," Xizor smiled. "Coming from an esteemed lady such as yourself, I wear it as a badge of honor."

Ry leaned over to whisper in her ear. "He seems quite taken with you."

Ana blushed and laughed. "Thank you!" She then continued. "Your highness, I was quite intrigued when Qi'ra brought us this opportunity. Normally, we Liannese can be a bit dismissive of outsiders and sometimes we come to regret that. But the venture she was referring to – this sounds quite lucrative. At this time, I need to know one thing in particular. Am I the first from my world that has been offered this opportunity?"

Xizor hissed slightly, as his tongue tasted the air, then retracted. "My dear Ana, I can assure you that you are. Rarely – aside, of course, from your gracious Queen Valles – are we humble Falleens accustomed to such exquisite beauty. To partner with you would be a distinct honor."

Ana chuckled, while glancing sideways at Ry, who smirked. "My goodness … well, I'm listening. Tell me what I'm getting into." Courtly come-ons were nothing unusual for her but she was skilled at receiving them.

"My Lady, this is the kind of opportunity that will make you not only an even bigger player on Lianna, but establish you as a force in the Outer Rim, perhaps the entire Galaxy."

Ana simply smiled and nodded, while Ry remained silent.

"Qi'ra, would you do the honors?"

"Certainly."

The Corellian stood and walked over to a projection screen on the wall, pressing a button to activate it. The display then showed black space at first, then zeroed in on a small body that grew ever larger. It appeared at first to be a planet, but then it was obviously a small asteroid. As it grew larger, its form showed a multi-colored celestial body, which normally indicated the presence of various metals. Ana and Ry both stared at the display, their minds attempting to analyze it. Soon it became clear that the pictures were coming from some sort of probe droid and the surface of the asteroid was soon visible as the craft was now in low orbit. Qi'ra began to narrate the presentation.

"Ladies, what we have discovered are deep veins of precious metals. Gold and platinum, of course, but also Iridium and Rhodium. These elements are of course greatly prized in various precision systems as are constructed on Lianna."

Xizor then spoke up. "But even more appetizing … we have also discovered a source of a very rare gaseous form of another light element. The one known as Clouzon-36, an isotope of immense value, as I'm certain both of you realize."

Ana and Ry glanced at each other, then the duchess commented.

"Prince Xizor, yes. We find this most intriguing … but we wonder exactly why you felt the need to present this to us. It seems you would have little trouble profiting off this find yourself. Indeed, I would expect such a find to raise your own profile in the Black Sun organization."

Xizor smiled, then gave a low hiss as his tongue came out again. "Your assumptions, dear Ana, are only partially correct. These materials would, however, call undue attention to our organization – were Imperial officials to learn of them directly – hence, we prefer to work with you on Lianna, given your close association with the Empire, especially the role that your queen is playing at present."

Ry smiled, "I get it. You would prefer to profit on the back end." She looked at Ana, who nodded slowly.

"Duchess, I await your decision," Xizor hissed again.

"Well, your highness, I must say I am interested. Could you give us some idea of the location of this particular find?"

"Only once we have an arrangement – one that will be mutually beneficial."

"Understandable," Ana said softly. "But something like this … we will likely need to run it by Valles." She paused again, then continued. "Tell you what, Prince. I believe she will be most interested, and, due to my longtime close relationship with her, I feel she will delegate everything to Ry and myself. But roughly how far from Lianna is this site?"

"About five to six hours for a class 0.5 hyperdrive. Your beautiful yacht could easily cover it."

"Very well," Ana continued. "I shouldn't expect you to tell me more than that until we've arrived at an arrangement. But say we were to proceed; how would you propose that it would work?"

Xizor inhaled deeply, then his tongue protruded a couple of time as he exhaled.

"Duchess Capra, for a mere one billion credits, we would sign over full title to the asteroid, then expect thirty percent of all proceeds from you."

Ry laughed. "A nice cut, considering you won't be doing much in the way of work once we're there."

Ana glanced at Ry, then nodded. "We'll give you twenty. If it's as valuable as you say, that could pay you billions in return over the next few years." She held up her hand slowly as Xizor's reptilian eyes flashed. "Of course, we're going to send our own survey team to review the findings. But we are people of honor and if things check out, we'll hold up our end of the deal."

"Fair enough," Xizor nodded. "Can we draw up a document, stating all you have just proposed?"

"Sure," Ana chuckled. "I will sign it, so long as you do as well and we both keep a record."

"Of course," he hissed, while smiling broadly.

Qi'ra quickly created the document by entering everything into her com device. Soon it was ready and electronic copies went to both Ana and Xizor, which they both signed from their devices. Ana then relayed a copy of the signed agreement to Ry, and they were both ready. Xizor stood, then bowed to the Duchess, while she and Ry both curtsied in response.

"Lady Qi'ra, please show our guests to their shuttle," Xizor requested. After both of them had left, he and Qi'ra sat down in a small office he used at this rural retreat. A bottle of whiskey was on the desk and he poured a small amount for both of them into a pair of shot glasses. As he took his first sip, he laughed.

"Qi'ra this has turned out to be one of your better ideas. Using the Liannese to make this deal adds a stamp of legitimacy to everything and the Empire should be fine with it, so long as Lady Valles signs off, and as greedy as she is, she'll have no issue with it once her subordinates return with the details."

Qi'ra chuckled. "That Clouzon-36 had to get their attention. Santhé Corp is going to love it."

"And I'll be moving up in the organization. With Maul out of the way now, there are few barriers remaining. This is going to be most lucrative for you as well, dear Qi'ra. Hooking up with a crafty gal like you has been one of the smarter moves I've made."

He took another sip, while the Corellian beamed back at him happily, knowing she stood to pocket many millions for her part of the deal. "Your persistence in winning over those people has been admirable."

"It wasn't easy," Qi'ra sighed, while smiling. "They are rightly suspicious of outsiders, and when I told them I was from Corellia, they acted as though I rarely bathed. I had to slowly make my impact as a "lady," which took a couple of years. Fortunately, I came to know Ana."

"Yes, she seems different. A woman with a nose for opportunity … so, go to Lianna and set up the journey to the Corva Sector and Eol Sha. I will be most interested in the status of this,"

"Not to worry, Sire. I'm on it."

As Ry and Ana were on their way back to Lianna, relaxing together in the spa, they discussed the venture.

"Do you think Valles will see anything we haven't about this deal?" Ry asked.

"I don't think so … she tends to trust my negotiating ability. And, if it checks out, it's going to be good for both of us. I'll make sure you get your fair share of the profits. And … perhaps the House of Kyver may be fully established?"

Ry laughed. "I don't know about thaaaat … but I shouldn't close my mind to opportunities that may arise. I'd never considered finding a partner, but there may be many eligible gentlemen …"

"Don't close your mind, friend. Liannese men can be wonderful. My late husband certainly was, and he gave me two wonderful children who are making their way on the planet, both in info-tech."

Ry sighed as she considered it. "Ana, I appreciate your suggestion, I really do, and maybe I've kept myself too closed off over the years. A family of my own … I don't know."

"No need to rush into anything, Ry. Just keep your mind open. Life is to be lived. That's what I always say. I'm sure Valles would agree."

"Fair enough. You know? You're right. Nothing is really promised to anyone in life, we have to seize the day, as they say. Perhaps my hanging around you is changing my perspective …"

"Don't knock it," Ana chuckled. "But I like you, Ry. You've got a way of looking at things that many of us often miss, perhaps because we're often too dismissive and over-confident. An outsider's perspective can be valuable at times. Valles would be the first to agree. She recently told me about a certain Togruta who lives on Felucia. We will start hearing her name more and more in the future …"

To be continued …
