Chapter 37: I Love the Love
Lianna, Santhia, 0 BBY, 6 months, 7 days, 19 hours
Valles and her guests Ana and Ry had finished their dinner on the 4th level of the Santhia palace and moved to a comfortable sitting area in a den-like like room off the small dining area. They hadn't discussed business yet as Valles preferred not to do that while she ate, as she felt it distracted from her enjoyment of the meal – which was typically sumptuous. But now, in the den, she pulled out a spice hookah and lit the bowl using her Force energy. After exhaling a small cloud, Valles passed the bowl to Ry, who did the same and then Ana had her turn. At this point, the Chairlady spoke up.
"So, Ana, what do you have for me on Malachor?"
Ana glanced at Ry, who gave a half-smile, while looking at Valles.
"Okay, we found a few things that we think you will find interesting … but first, my Lady, are you versed in the history of the place?"
Valles stared at Ana for a second, then answered. "Not really. Grandpa never said much about it, but I understand there were a number of things from ancient times that happened there." Her voice dropped, and she gave both Ry and Ana separate gazes, while noting, "the place is still strong with the Force – the Dark Side in particular."
Ry nodded. "We felt it too. In fact, it seemed to us that there had been a clash somewhat recently."
Valles chuckled. "Indeed, in fact it was about 18 months back. Vader and someone named Ahsoka Tano."
Ana stopped her, "wait … I've heard that name somewhere."
"And you will be hearing it more in the future," Valles remarked. "She is a major player in the rebellion."
"Okay …" the Duchess started. "Valles, should we be concerned about the rebellion? I mean, we haven't spoken about it much before. You seemed to think it was insignificant."
Valles then sat back and placed her hands in her lap, and started smoothing her dress. Ry noticed this and realized this could often be a tell for what the Lady was thinking, and she wondered how many others had noticed that. At first, she thought it might be a sign of nervousness or concern, but she later concluded it meant that Valles was about to divulge some important information, and she only did that for clear reasons. As long as she'd known the Lady, Ry rarely saw her not wearing a dress of some kind. There was likely a reason for that, too.
"Yes, Ana. I will admit to that, but it was also for the benefit of others in the Imperial ranks. Were I to indicate otherwise, it could have been somewhat awkward. But you are correct that I now see things somewhat differently. There is more capability there than we realized a few years ago, and the primary reason for that is the presence of two rather powerful Force-sensitive individuals."
Ry was now most curious as to why Valles brought the subject up, and what her ultimate aim was. I suspect she wants to be Galactic Empress someday and she likely has some kind of plan, so what is the point of telling us this information?
Ana gave a low whistle as she mulled this over. "Valles, is this Ahsoka Tano one of them? Because you already told me of the other – Shaak Ti."
"Correct. And it's time that both of you knew about them as well. Let me just say this – there will be some changes made – ones that will affect all of us. That's all I'm going to say about it now. I will let you both think about it – it will likely be a useful exercise."
Valles then relit the bowl and took another draw on the spice, allowing her to redirect her thoughts.
"Now, tell me more about Malachor."
Ana then replied. "My Lady, the place is actually a good bit more hospitable than many might realize. It turns out the soil has many nutrients but you have to drill down a ways to detect it. The crust and mantle are heavy in silicon, while the core has much iron, thus the planet has a magnetic field. We came to the conclusion that Malachor could be transformed if more water could be added to the atmosphere."
"Very good," Valles said softly. "Ry, you're the expert on this. How difficult would that be to alter the atmosphere?"
"Complex, but doable. I would start with a general seeding process. We'd likely need a few large ships to make it go faster, but I think it could be done over a few months' time."
"Okay. I'm satisfied. We can follow up on this as may be needed. I'm not planning anything yet." Valles took another draw on the bowl, then asked:
"I had the distinct feeling that both of you had something else you wanted to bring to my attention. Am I correct?"
"You are, mi-lady," Ana chuckled. "We think you are going to like this …"
"Uh huh, our friends on Falleen have pointed us to a potentially valuable new find … maybe exceedingly valuable."
Valles smirked, "Go on, Ry …"
"It's an asteroid on the northern Outer Rim. One with large deposits of precious metals like Rhodium and Iridium – both of which Santhé Corp uses in ship construction – but not only that, it's reported to be a source of Clouzon-36."
Valles perked up with that mention. "How big of a source?"
Ana then broke in. "We're going to send a survey team to verify everything. Currently we are in negotiations over a down payment before they will divulge the exact location."
Valles scoffed for a second. "You mentioned Falleen. Could this be …"
"Yep," Ana replied. "He says he knows you and you both have a good working relationship."
The Grand Duchess laughed out loud at that. "Oh, he likely thinks that. How much of a payment are you willing to make to get the location?"
"Valles, I will put up the funds. The most I'm willing to put up now is ten million."
"Well, Ana …" Valles smiled insouciantly, "I do hope this works out. But you have my blessing on pursuing this. Keep me posted on what you find."
"We will, of course," Ana glanced over at Ry, who nodded slightly. "I would expect this to take a few weeks. I'll need that much time to get the team together before we go to the sight."
Valles then used the Force to bring a bottle of cognac over, along with three small glasses. She proceeded to pour a small amount into each glass, then floated Ana's and Ry's over to them.
"Let's toast, ladies. To our success, to Lianna, and to the Empire."
The three clinked glasses, then sipped the exquisite grand cru aged distilled variety.
Ana raved about the quality of the brandy. "Quite a treat, My Lady."
"Aged twenty-five years, from the Aquitano region," Valles noted. "The normal process is ten years."
"I know it well," she nodded to Ry. "They are to the south of Livornia. The grapes are among the best in all of Lianna."
Ry sampled it again, taking care to let it sit on her tongue, then noticing the subtle flavor. She realized that few Liannese were likely to be able to afford this vintage and this was a rare privilege from the future queen. Lianna was not normally considered by many to be a source of ultra-fine spirits, but in this category, they could compete with the best the Corporate Sector had to offer.
After they had polished off their glasses, Valles had one last remark.
"Clouzon-36 … I shouldn't have to remind you how important this could be. I want strict secrecy on it. No one beyond us needs to know. If this is a significant new source, we stand to do quite well indeed. You wonder if we can trust Xizor. I'm not operating under any illusions, here, but I have a feeling he is being honest with us on this. If he's not, he stands to lose as much as anyone."
Ana and Ry simply nodded.
Felucia, Shaak's holocron vault, 0 BBY, 5 months, 8 days
Shaak had been in meditation after some holocron study and was processing the information that Ahsoka and Maris had learned about the Death Star's most prominent flaw. Valles and her associate, Berit, hadn't mentioned anything to do with exhaust ports for the main reactor, but Shaak soon realized that they expected her to come to this conclusion on her own. Saw Gerrera had been the one to inform Ahsoka, and the name Galen Erso had been dropped. So, friend Valles, might I assume that Mr Erso also informed you of this same feature? But we still need to know where these ports are located on the surface of the station and no one yet has seen fit to provide us with a schematic. It means we shall have to obtain those ourselves … and the only likely location will be heavily guarded. I don't suppose Vader has been told where they are?
Shaak thought about asking him but soon thought better of it, because if he didn't know, it would be awkward for him to be asking anyone about it. So she realized it was time to pay Valles a visit. However, she knew she couldn't just go to the City and attempt to visit her office. As a Togruta, she would stand out like a sore thumb. Knowing this, she instead contacted Duchess Berit.
"Berit? Yes, it's Master Ti … I need to meet with you and Valles … It's very important."
Shaak chuckled as Berit answered. "Yes, I can be there tomorrow morning, Lianna City time. Can you get me a landing slot?"
Shaak shut off her com, satisfied that Berit would handle things for her. She slept soundly, which she usually did, as Shaak had always been able to compartmentalize her thoughts. Basically, things either had to be done right away or could wait, and this was more of the second. They certainly needed to find a way to destroy the Death Star and apparently Galen Erso had given them the way. This was a much better position than they had been in a month earlier.
The next morning, Shaak was aboard Intrepid V, running the pre-launch checks and doing diagnostics on her basic shipboard systems. Things seemed fine, but Shaak knew she wanted to go more in-depth and started considering training Xendar Silkaw – now a full-fledged Knight of the Order – in the various details. Having more than one person who understood these things would be a great improvement. Maris and Ahsoka were now skilled in starship maintenance, and Ahsoka in particular could do most repairs, especially on her own ship Corvala Dawn, but the Intrepid was a different setup and reflected Shaak's own preferred settings and diagnostics. It was vastly different than Corvala Dawn.
By about 7:00 hours, Shaak felt it was time to leave. Intrepid lifted off and quickly made the jump. Fifteen minutes later, she dropped from hyperspace about 100,000 km from Lianna and the planet was plainly visible. The turquoise-shaded atmosphere was clearly visible over the green surface as Intrepid sped on and soon made high orbit. Once contacted by the spaceport authorities below, Shaak allowed her ship to be drawn in by a tractor beam. This was the method that most smaller craft were required to use once they had landing rights. As her ship was being pulled in, Shaak got a clear look at some of Santhé-Sienar's orbital platforms, a truly impressive sight for those seeing them for the first time. So much of ship manufacturing and weapons development was done on these platforms and Shaak noticed they were set up at different latitudes. Truly impressive, she thought as she nodded, they have a very sophisticated setup.
After Shaak had contacted her, Berit made sure she was at the landing platform by 7:00 and even though she had to wait, she was willing to do so as Valles had made her the go-between for any request Shaak might have of them. As Shaak debarked from the Intrepid, she noticed a chill in the air and wrapped her robe around her a little tighter. Berit was wearing a smart-looking green leather coat as she came up to Shaak and gave a slight curtsy. Shaak noticed this level of deference and concluded that Valles directed she be shown every courtesy. She nodded to the Duchess.
"Good morning, Berit. I hope I didn't get you up too early today."
"Not at all, Shaak. We Liannese tend to be early risers anyway and the morning is often a time of much accomplishment … how was your trip?"
"Quite fine, thank you. The staff on landing protocol is most pleasant and I can see why tractor beams are used. It makes for a more efficient system."
Berit chuckled. "We've been doing that for a long time. All visitors to Lianna are usually welcome, but we have certain protocols that must be followed. The tractor beam setup enables us to carefully check the nature of any vessels that may arrive."
Shaak simply nodded, then asked, "is Valles ready to receive me?"
"Absolutely. In fact, she welcomes you to her office for the first time. I'm honored to present you to her."
Shaak smiled and gave a slight grin. "After you."
Berit led her guest to a waiting limo-speeder, which took them deeper into the City. After about ten minutes, they arrived at the street entrance to the Santhé Tower. As she got out of the limo, Shaak craned her neck to take in the full scope of the magnificent structure. The base of the tower was truly massive, and there was a gradual taper in the circumference as the tower rose, leading to the top, which was still quite large. Valles's office and the receiving area still took in about 1400 square metres. As they walked into the huge lobby area – which included restaurants and a check-in desk for those staying at the hotel (on levels 115 thru 130) – Shaak was visibly impressed as she looked around. There were a great many plants of various types, including small trees, water fountains, even a waterfall that was fed by continuous circulation.
"This is magnificent," Shaak said softly. "Very tasteful and elegant. Not what one might expect for the headquarters of one of the Galaxy's major armaments makers."
"We Liannese always want our structures to represent beauty of form, married to function," Berit noted proudly. "New buildings must undergo an approval process and the Board of Review is quite strict. Lianna City may be huge, but we want it to project our values."
"It's wonderful, really," Shaak remarked, as she nodded several times. "Are there apartments in this tower?"
"No, only the hotel, but some of the suites are quite suitable for longer stays. We often have our important guests in them. You, of course, are welcome anytime, just call ahead to reserve."
They proceeded over to the main bank of lifts, and arrived at the pair that were exclusive to Valles's office. These were guarded by a separate staff that reported directly to the Chairlady.
"Good morning, Duchess," one of the men nodded to Berit. "And to your honored guest."
As they boarded the car, Shaak glanced at Berit.
"Your arrival was pre-cleared, Shaak. They were given a description, but nothing more. Your purpose here remains on a need-to-know basis only." Shaak simply nodded, with a half-smile.
Soon they had scaled the tower and arrived at floor 215. The doors opened and they walked over to the reception desk.
"Duchess Berit, good morning," called one of the women on duty, who pressed a button that informed Valles of their arrival.
Lasivia Borges soon appeared, greeting them. They followed her through the small space around her desk, and opened to a portal leading into the office. Valles had asked that they be shown into her main office as soon as they arrived. Upon seeing Shaak, she proceeded over, first exchanging kisses with Berit, then taking Shaak's right hand and grasping it gently. The Togruta smiled.
"Good to see you again, Valles."
The Chairlady was in a simple bright yellow silk dress with matching shoes, her hair fully down and a large application of her sensuous perfume was immediately evident. Shaak inhaled it and noted something unique about it, filing this impression away for later. Valles led them over to the lounge, where Shaak took a comfortable chair that Valles had brought in just for her. The Chairlady took her usual chair, which was next to Shaak, while Berit was relegated to the sectional, where most guests were expected to sit.
"Are we cozy, Shaak?" Valles asked in a cheerful tone. "Care for a beverage?"
"Why, yes," Shaak said gently. "Did you make my favorite Liannese tea?"
"I did indeed, friend. Berit informed me of your tastes."
Valles reached over to the table and poured a cup for each of them, then handed Shaak's to her. As the Togruta sipped the blend, she enjoyed the warmth and the slight nutty flavor.
"So, my friend," Valles began, "what may I do for you?"
"Valles," Shaak replied, while savoring the tea, "I wanted to bring something to your attention, regarding the battle station project."
"Sure."
"It seems there are a series of exhaust shafts to the main reactor that were built in. These would be large enough to accommodate a good-sized torpedo. What I'm curious about is why would this design feature exist, given the time and expense that has been required to construct the station."
Valles smiled and gazed directly into Shaak's eyes, which were a serene dark blue, indicating a general level of trust.
"Shaak, how exactly did you come by this information? I only ask because I am aware of it myself, but it seems that perhaps no one else is, aside from the one who designed this feature. And, you are correct – it suggests a level of inattention to detail that was missing, for some unexplained reason."
Shaak took another sip and returned the gaze. "Our source – albeit a third-hand one – was a member of the design team. It seems this person has some misgivings about the potential uses of this weapon. Being able to destroy an entire planet and all …"
Valles nodded, her expression turning serious. "I cannot deny any of that … so what are you getting at?"
"That someone wouldn't terribly mind if the station were to be destroyed – at some undetermined point in the future."
Valles turned her head to gauge Berit's reaction, but the Duchess remained composed.
"So, Shaak, are you offering to see to that? I'm just speaking in hypotheticals here – as I'm sure you were as well."
"Let's say I was, Lady Santhé. Would you perhaps object?" Shaak felt it was time to lay her cards on the table.
Valles smirked, somewhat nervously. Master Shaak, I have little doubt that you can make good on this. The only question is when. "Would I? Well, that depends on a number of things, Shaak. The timing on this is the key."
Shaak found this response to be somewhat curious. So … Valles, we have established that you are not opposed. Interesting, indeed. How you might explain this to Palpatine is the part I cannot yet understand, but your emphasis on timing is eye-opening. Are you saying a few things have to happen first?
Valles sat, attempting to read Shaak's thoughts, but realized that if she used the Force to probe her, it would give away far more than she wanted to at this point. In any event, she knew that it would not be easy in any case. Shaak likely only opened her mind to a very short list of people. So her next statement would be crucial.
"Shaak … I need you to understand my position on this. I'm caught between a couple of things. There are the expectations from Coruscant and the Crown – as I have been placed in charge of the development of the Project – and, at the same time, I have my world and its people that I am responsible for. It's a balancing act. One that does not allow for any … miscalculations."
Shaak laughed openly, but softly. "I understand, and I do not want to cause you any undue stress at this point. But, if I were to ask for a schematic – so that I might more easily locate these … shafts, would that be available?"
Valles chuckled. "Oh, that would make things much simpler for you, yes? Are you quite certain that I possess this?"
Shaak thought it over. No, Lady Santhé, I am not, to be completely honest, but I have to suspect you do, else why would you not feign even the slightest level of surprise that I already know about the feature? In a way, you have just confirmed the accuracy of the information obtained by Mister Gerrera.
"Valles, I am not – I cannot – ask you to turn over such documentation, even if you have it. That's far too much to ask, given your position, which I am sympathetic towards. I guess you have – in a way – already confirmed that my information is correct."
Valles simply nodded, a crafty smile returning to her face. Oh, my Togruta friend, you don't miss much. And I would far rather have you as an ally than an adversary.
"Yes, Shaak, I won't give you any reason to think otherwise."
Shaak sat back in the comfortable chair, and finished her tea. She then nodded and looked out the window at the city below. "A lovely day, isn't it?" She chuckled.
Valles returned the gesture, then rose. "More tea, my friend?"
"I'd love some."
Valles refilled Shaak's cup, then walked over to the window, as Shaak and Berit both joined her.
"This is a beautiful city," Shaak remarked. "I see the layout, how the avenues all proceed at precise angles, and the various structures were carefully planned in their locations. The various waterways and small ponds, as well. Marvelous."
"Yes. And it's always been that way – for centuries. Lianna has a proud history. If you like, I would be happy to provide you a volume on it. I foresee that you will become a treasured friend for the people here, Shaak."
Shaak laughed again, then sipped the tea. "I'd like that, Valles. This is a civilized place."
The three of them continued to discuss various matters, Valles even providing Shaak an idea of the various "protectorate" worlds that were essentially tribute-payers to her and the nature of the system. Shaak was curious how it all fit under the Imperial umbrella but concluded that Palpatine was fine with all of it and that he and Valles had some kind of arrangement. This had become apparent from her monitoring of the discussions they'd had in the Imperial Palace on Coruscant, but now, much of this was in the proper context. Shaak was pleased with the results of this visit, and came to conclude that the rebellion could be successful. The only remaining question was how could Valles successfully "thread the needle" with Palpatine and the possible destruction of the Death Star. But the answers to this would not be learned today.
Eol Sha, Corva Sector, Northern Outer Rim, 0 BBY, 4 months, 27 days
The Concordia II had made its way to the far northern reaches of the Outer Rim and to the Corva Sector, where the mysterious planet Eol Sha lay. Duchess Ana and Countess Ry were accompanied by a team of six surveyors, all from Lianna. These people worked for Santhé-Sienar, in the materials and fuels division of the weapons maker. Ana had once held a managerial position in Santhé Corp and had known Kerred Santhé socially. The House of Capra had been a longtime ally of the Santhé family, going back for generations, thus Ana had various contacts in the organization. Her father and grandfather had also held positions in the company as well.
The group was in a conference room near the yacht's flight deck, one that had a large screen on one wall. When the ship dropped from hyperspace, various features of the system could be seen. The first thing they noticed was that the main planet had a rather large primary satellite, one of sufficient mass to exert a strong tidal pull on the planet. Ana called attention to this as she addressed the assembled group seated at the conference table.
"Everyone, note the position of the moon in this system. Our instruments tell us it is about 3500 km in diameter, while the planet is just over 10,000 km. The surface readings from Eol Sha show much seismic activity, along with active volcanos and continuous lava flows. This is certainly a good indicator of much possible turnover of metallic elements from the subterranean levels below."
Ry took keen interest in the display, and started to wonder where the Clouzon-36 deposits might be found.
"Qi'ra and the Falleen mentioned an asteroid … I'm not seeing one."
Ana nodded. "I don't think they meant it literally. Some people use that term as a catch-all. The find is going to be either on the planet or on the moon."
"Well," Ry noted, "it's a mystery how they discovered it … I think we need to get Qi'ra over here and see what she has to say."
"Can you contact her? I'd like to hear it," Ana replied, while making a half smirk.
One of the surveyors stepped forward. "Duchess Ana, I brought along a detector for Clouzon-36. We use it when testing certain components. For the most part, Santhé-Sienar has phased it out for ship design. The fuel is too hard to get and we can't build a production line based on it."
Ry spoke up. "But, wouldn't you say – if we could get it – it would be a good thing to have, so long as we could count on a steady supply?"
"Yes, Countess. I would recommend that it only be used for certain high-performance craft."
Ana nodded. "Valles would likely agree, but she seemed interested when we mentioned this to her."
Ry returned the nod. "Yes, she seemed to have something in mind. Well, anyway, let's get after it. By the way, I need your name."
"Bengston LaValle, madam Countess."
"Thank you, we might mention you to Chairlady Santhé."
The man smiled and bowed. "I would be most honored, ma'am."
Ana spoke up. "Okay, let's see what that moon has to offer first. Mister LaValle, please lead your team down to the surface. Our instruments indicate that it has little in the way of atmosphere, so you'll need life support. Take your time, do a thorough job, then report back to us."
A few hours later, the team returned to the Concordia via shuttle. After they docked and exited the shuttle, they changed out of their gear and returned to the conference room.
"Well, Mister LaValle, what can you report?" asked Ana.
"Duchess Ana, we were able to detect veins of platinum – rather large, that one – and strong indications of rhodium and iridium, as the earlier prospectors had reported to you. We think it likely that additional heavy metals may exist on this moon. If you like, we can do a pilot shaft and see what we come up with."
Ana glanced at Ry, who shrugged. "Did you get any samples?"
"Yes, mi-lady. We brought back some of each metal. This moon could be a valuable source for Santhé engineering, although it is a bit of a journey."
Ry piped up. "How about the Clouzon-36?"
"No trace, mi-lady. If that exists here, it's gotta be on the planet itself."
Ana yawned. "That could take some time. Can you gentlemen rig up a high-powered scope on the yacht? We can do several orbits and see what pops up."
"I'll get on it, mi-lady. If you both want to try, it could be well worth it. I'm not ready to write off this mission."
About two hours later, they had the device in place on the Concordia's upper deck and started the scan. The helmsman on the flight deck set the course to orbit in such a way that would eventually cover about 80% of the planet's surface. There seemed to be no significant bodies of water below and the vegetation was minimal, mostly concentrated nears the equator. The conclusion was that Eol Sha was not a very hospitable planet, though it did have an atmosphere that contained ample oxygen.
As the survey team manned the read outs during each orbit, Ry and Ana met privately.
"Well," Ana said, in a low tone. "Is this worth our time and expense?"
Ry nodded. "I'd like to stick it out. You might not have such confidence in Qi'ra, but she's rarely missed the mark. They have a lot to lose if they gave us a bum steer. Our association can be very profitable for them, and Xizor has ambitions of being an even bigger player in Black Sun."
Ana scoffed. "Do you think he and Qi'ra have anything going on ... personally?"
Ry shook her head. "Nope. She likes her guys a little roguish but doesn't have a thing for non-human species romantically."
"She told you that?" Ana chuckled.
"In so many words, yeah …"
"Alright, then. Let's see what the guys come up with. If we can get the Clouzon-36, it will still be worth the trouble. Meantime, we've got ourselves a backup source for heavy metals. At least, I want to put some satellites in that can report back to us if anyone else is snooping around here."
"I'll take care of that," Ry smirked. "Good idea, by the way."
After about another hour and a half, Ry and Ana returned to the conference room, Bengston LaValle and the team had reported back in.
"Good news, ladies. I think we've pinpointed it. There seems to be a strong signal coming from the southern hemisphere. We've sent a couple of probes down below to give us more details."
"Good work, guys," Ry smiled. "If we find the gas, we're going to need to send some mining craft over here so we can bring some workable samples back to Lianna and the orbital platform."
LaValle bowed to her. "We'll handle it, Lady Kyver."
"Good, I will be heading up this operation, Ana has placed me in charge."
It didn't take long for the probes to be in place. The area in question was rife with seismic activity and there were a few volcanoes in the vicinity. But a source of Clouzon-36 had indeed been located, and the team theorized that it was something of a newly opened vein due to the recent quakes that had taken place an estimated month or so earlier.
The business at hand having been wrapped up, Ana directed the Concordia II to set course for a return to Lianna. A few hours later, they had docked on the orbital platform for Santhé-Sienar Flight Operations. Ana had a medium-sized apartment nearby and she invited Ry in for a cocktail. As they sat back in a luxurious lounge area, Ana mused about what they had seen.
"What would you do with the Clouzon, Ry?"
"We have to tell Valles, of course. She's the one that gave us the go-ahead, but I also think she'll reward us handsomely. She's always done that for me."
Ana laughed. "And for me as well. She may be greedy and tyrannical, but she's a lot of fun to be around." She paused for a second. "Still, this stuff could be quite valuable – in the wrong hands. I wonder why Black Sun didn't just keep this to themselves."
"You know why, Ana. They know we'll do a better job of keeping this from Imperial busy-bodies. Black Sun is full of people who might snitch for the right price. I have good regard for Qi'ra. She's a sharp one and full of ambition, but at the same time, she knows that getting close to Valles just makes good sense."
"Have to give you that," Ana chuckled. She raised her glass. "To Qi'ra."
Ry laughed. "Yep. I'll drink to that …"
Lianna, the City, Santhé (Urban) Palace, 0 BBY, 3 months, 11 days, 22 hours
After a relaxing dinner at a formal but small dining room at (newly renamed) Santhé Palace in the City, Valles asked Ana and Berit to join her in a small study nearby. They were in her private suite, which covered over 100 rooms on the building's tenth (and top) level. Because it was so large, Valles liked to invite other heads of state to stay with her in the suite as it had several large bedrooms and separate baths, yet still provided a sense of intimacy that allowed her guests to relax and be pampered by Liannese hospitality. On this evening, Valles had made up her mind to seek the Throne of Lianna and set events in motion to make her the first Queen of the planet in over a century.
In 122 BBY, the Liannese elected legislature voted unanimously to remove King Azello III from the throne as he had been discovered engaging in activity deemed "unbecoming" of the monarchy. As he was the latest in a series of monarchs that had been steadily more corrupt and unworthy, the legislature decided to abolish the monarchy altogether and return Lianna to a federal republic form of government, which was approved by the Planetary High Court. Most local affairs were devolved to the 75 regional authorities and their lands were re-established as Districts. At first, the Districts were led by various nobility – mostly Dukes and Counts – but this too became outmoded by around 105 BBY, and the planet continued on more or less as a decentralized republic without monarchs or formal titles.
Overall planetary management grew even more efficient and the economy boomed, while the Santhé organization eventually became the planet's most valuable firm in terms of market capitalization, led by Valles's grandfather Kerred Santhé after about 90 BBY. His leadership pushed the company into becoming a major player among Galactic arms-makers, even more so after he engineered the merger with Sienar Fleet Systems in 57 BBY. But with the rise of Kerred's granddaughter Valles and her gradual planet-wide fame, there began a nostalgic yearning for the days of the monarchy from centuries before. Much of this was due to Valles's careful seeding of the planet's media and her meticulously crafted public image.
She had spent the fifteen years leading up to her decision by continually playing up her beauty and charm, while also using her great wealth to make life on Lianna better for the average Liannese citizen, as she invested heavily in the planet's health care and hospital system and gave to the endowment of top universities, while publicly lauding and funding the Water Board and other stewards of the Liannese ecology. Despite her concentrating an ever-larger share of the planet's wealth under her own name, she became ever more popular as the general public saw her as the de facto queen and the clamor grew to have her take on the role formally. Opinion surveys showed voting-age citizens were very much in favor of "Queen Valles," while elected members of the legislature were pressed on the matter by the citizenry, such that their reelection campaigns usually included a pledge to approve the "reestablishment" as it was known publicly. Because Valles was a woman, there was a sense that she would be more "pure" and far less likely to be corrupted, while her vast wealth also was a benefit, making her above reproach in the eyes of the Liannese citizenry. The people of Lianna had always boosted women into powerful roles and the culture greatly valued motherhood and feminine virtues. Liannese men who sought positions of power were more or less required to have beautiful and educated wives, as it was felt this would make them better leaders, more likely to serve the people rather than themselves.
The first step was the reestablishment of the nobility and a peerage of sorts was drawn up. This was acceptable to the public as they were seen as being loyal to Valles, and as such, they gained an air of legitimacy that would have been impossible otherwise. Finally, the spread of Liannese power to adjoining sectors which became protectorates, then extensions, was also accepted as it only added to Valles's glory – which the public saw as their own as she was gradually becoming more and more popular and beloved. So now it was time to take the next step and formally declare herself as the new queen.
As Berit and Ana were seated in the study, a waiter brought them each a small glass of Aquitano 25-year aged cognac, which they sipped happily. Valles took her seat in a more regal chair and then laid out her plan.
"My dear friends, it is time. We're going to re-establish the monarchy."
Berit simply nodded, while Ana smiled broadly, and raised her glass.
"To Queen Valles!"
Berit did the same, exclaiming, "hear, hear!"
Valles simply smiled as she took a sip of her cognac as well.
"So, what made you decide to move forward on this?" Berit asked.
"I've given it much thought, and it's time. The legislation has been drawn up, and the measure sits on the Leader's desk in his office. Once I am fully established, Willis's title will become Prime Minister and we shall also establish ministries in key areas. My new queendom will extend to all associated and protected worlds on the Outer Rim and they will eventually gain representation in Her Majesty's Legislature."
Ana nodded. "Seems like a good plan. Again, Valles, congratulations are in order. To Lianna!"
"To Lianna," both Berit and Valles repeated after her.
"How soon will this happen?" Berit then asked.
"It's going to proceed slowly," Valles explained. "The coronation will not happen for perhaps another year, but that will allow all of the changes to the government to take place. We're going to do a full public relations effort on this, that will explain each step in detail. It's important that a sense of stability be conveyed and I want each Liannese citizen to feel his or her voice is truly heard. I'm doing this partially because of the public desire that I do, and then my coronation will truly feel like a public event that everyone can share and enjoy."
"Valles," Ana began, "have you given thought as to what kind of queen you will be? I guess I'm asking about how you will want to be seen publicly once you are ensconced on the throne."
Valles nodded. "I've been thinking about that, too. The last thing I want is to be stuffy or over-officious. When I see how Queen Vestalia is regarded in her home sector, I truly want to emulate her. If the people want to build statues of me then I will feel most grateful. But that kind of adulation has to be earned. They tell me I have the 'common touch.' And I more or less want to continue on as I am today, wearing my colorful dresses and being light and vivacious. I plan to continue to run Santhé Corp, although I will start to delegate more and more."
Berit then asked, "will you invite Palpatine to the coronation?"
"Oh my, I haven't got that far yet, but I suppose so. It would be good to have his blessing."
As the evening went on, and the three of them eventually drained the cognac bottle, many other decisions were made. Valles decided to appoint two other nobles to be in charge of organizing the coronation and everything that would lead up to it, and another to act as direct liaison to the legislature and the office of the Leader, Willis Dragoo, who was scheduled to be publicly named as Prime Minister in about four months' time. Once he was in the role, the other ministries would be formally announced, along with the minister-designates, each of whom would be approved by majority vote in the Legislature.
Both Ana and Berit would be given prime roles and each would be named as Grand Duchesses around that same time, and would take primacy over the rest of the peerage. Each member of the nobility would have expanded authority over their local areas and would receive a generous budget from the Crown – a body of officials that would also report directly to the Queen.
As the meeting ended, Ana and Berit wished Valles well as she went off to her bedroom and planned to turn in for the night, feeling a bit "buzzed" from the fine spirits. They then discussed the details privately.
"So, Ana, what were your impressions?" Berit chuckled, realizing that she and Ana would have to work closer together than they had up to this point.
"Well … one thing she didn't talk about much was how much direct power she would assume as Queen. If I know Valles, she won't settle for a purely ceremonial role, and I doubt the public would have any problem with her exercising more formal authority."
Berit nodded. "You are right, of course. But notice how detailed this whole plan is. It's like she's been thinking about this for a long time."
"I'm sure she has. Valles is a very complex person and she's more than capable of doing several things at once."
"Maybe we're just beginning to see how true that is."
At that, both Ana and Berit nodded.
"Looking forward to working closer with you, Duchess," Berit smiled.
"As am I, Duchess. We've got to make it work. But, I wonder just where Master Shaak Ti will fit in with our future Queen's plans."
"We'll just have to see. I would imagine Shaak herself will have something to say about that. She's the first person I've seen that doesn't appear to be intimidated by Her Majesty."
"And yet, this doesn't bother Valles all that much."
Lianna, the City, LBS Studios, 0 BBY, 3 months, 6 days, 15 hours
About four weeks later, Valles's plan had swung into motion. The next morning after she had spoken with the Duchesses, she sent a press release announcing her plan and indicating that more details would follow. The news hit almost immediately and the City was abuzz. Expertly gauging the mood, Valles waited a few days before granting interview requests and she picked her favorite correspondent, the Lianna Broadcasting System (LBS) veteran Natan Fluh.
She then set up a video interview at the LBS studio, for the mid-afternoon, and arrived wearing a long turquoise (to honor Lianna by showing the unique color of their sky in her attire) gown with a train, along with much platinum jewelry – bracelets, necklace, earrings, even a small tiara, all with glittering stones prominently featured. The news people later estimated that she was wearing perhaps as much as ten million credits worth.
Fluh was conducting his daily interview show from the network's downtown studio and had arranged the set to just be two chairs, with some soft lighting and a backdrop of pictures of the City, with the Santhé Tower prominently featured. Some soft jazz played as Valles was announced and she walked slowly onto the set, moving deliberately while facing the small audience in the studio. Smiling broadly while approaching the host, who bowed to her, then traded kisses with her, while the audience applauded enthusiastically.
As he helped her into her seat, Fluh remarked, "that might be the last time I will get to kiss you, Valles."
She continued to smile, then relaxed as she crossed her legs. "Natan, dear, how have you been?"
"I'm doing splendidly, my Lady. How honored we are to have the next Queen of Lianna here today," he announced, as the audience cheered, seemingly on queue.
Valles rose for a second, nodding her head toward the audience, to acknowledge their support, then was seated. She spoke first. "So … go ahead, Natan, let's get on with it … all those things you've been dying to ask me …" then had a good laugh, as the audience followed suit, clearly enjoying the moment and realizing this was perhaps a piece of history unfolding before their eyes.
"Dear Valles," he started. "There are so many things, and we've only got a half hour, so let me first ask … when did you decide you wanted the re-establishment?"
"Oh, it was a long time coming, really. It took me a while before I felt it would be welcomed … but now that the moment is here, I'm cautiously optimistic."
"Well, my Lady, it seems your timing couldn't be better. So, how do you see your reign beginning?"
Valles tipped her head back, took a deep breath and smiled again. "I'm likely to start slow. There will be lots to do before the coronation, and many plans to coordinate with the Leader's office – even before he becomes our Prime Minister."
Fluh nodded, slowly, then asked, "have you decided on the coronation date … and when do you officially become Queen?"
"We're working that out. I think it will be a couple of months. There will be a small ceremony, at the Palace in the City, and then I will open the session of the Legislature as the new sovereign. The coronation will be a celebration of all that makes our world such a great place to live and to honor the people of Lianna. I see them as much more than mere subjects, but as partners in our endeavor … to further spread the good life we have here."
While she spoke, Fluh gazed at her with admiration. Valles was working her usual magic, smiling and giving expressions of mirth and insouciance as she gestured with her hands, made playful faces, and played to the crowd.
"So, Valles, one topic that's come up recently after your announcement was just how far your Queendom will extend … there are many nearby worlds that have recently come into our orbit – will you be their Queen as well?"
Valles nodded, then turned her head toward the audience. "That's something else we are working out. There will be some closer-in worlds that are a natural extension of the home world, such as Pasmin, Chandaar, and Cadinth … while others like Raxus, will be given the opportunity to vote on it. I am of the opinion that our group of communities share many things and foremost among them is the desire to have the best quality of life possible. I shall strive to make that a reality for them."
The interview continued along these lines, with Valles spelling out her plans for the reconstituted administration and its various ministries, plus the disposition of the 75 Districts and the promise that they would continue to manage their internal affairs. It all went the way the Queen-to-be wanted it and the mood was clearly upbeat. Valles would be more than a monarch, as her relative youth and polished elegance had made her most popular – she would be a celebrity as well and a healthy gossip scene was already swirling around her. This would prove to be somewhat limiting as her ability to move privately would become more difficult. Valles of course knew this, but still yearned for the affection she was receiving and knew that she would grow even richer and more powerful in the process. She also craved the formal occasions, where she could hold court and enjoy everyone waiting on her every word.
But before that could happen, a number of things had to be dealt with, and one of these would be the disposition of the Project and her relations with Coruscant. She already had a distinct feeling that Shaak wanted to overthrow the Emperor and if the Death Star was out of the way, it might well be possible.
Lianna, the City, Santhé (urban) Palace, 0 BBY, 2 months, 15 days, 6 hours
Things started moving fast after the announcement of the Re-establishment of the Liannese monarchy. Valles was never one to waste time and this had always been her strategy, starting when she was a teenager and the apple of her grandfather's eye. About one week after the LBS interview, another press release was issued, stating that there would be a celebration in the City and that monarchs from other worlds were invited. At the top of that list were Queen Vestalia of Hapes and Queen Breha of Alderaan. Dalné, the 19-year-old Queen of Naboo also was on the list, and a few others. Valles had reached out to as many of her fellow monarchs in the Galaxy as possible, and all accepted her invitation as the reputation of the Liannese leader was quickly spreading. The gala and conference were set for three weeks after Valles went public with the news. The gossip industry in the City was abuzz as they covered each guest's arrival.
Vestalia arrived first, sensitive to the fact that her extreme size meant special accommodations were necessary. She mentioned this to Valles , who told her:
"Your majesty, we are just so honored to have you come to our world. I am certain we can handle everything just like you were at home."
The Hapian queen laughed gently and smiled at Valles, someone she had come to love, almost as a daughter. "Valles, I have no doubt of that. But first, let me congratulate you personally. This has been a long time coming for you and the people of Lianna, who clearly adore you – as well they should. From what I can tell, no one has done a better job in looking after their interests – not an easy job when you consider everything that Palpatine has been up to."
"Yes," Valles nodded in response. "We should talk about that a little later during your visit. I do hope you can stay for a few days. It's wonderful having you here."
She gestured to Valles, who happily hopped up and into her lap, where they cuddled for a few seconds. Vestalia was perched on an elegant repulsor throne, which showed the royal Hapian emblem, and "VR" as her symbol, which was everywhere in the Hapes Sector. Valles then gestured to her staff and the way was clear for Vestalia to proceed to her guest accommodations on the ninth floor of the Santhé Urban Palace. Once there, Valles kissed Vestalia on the cheek, then hopped off and onto the floor. She was wearing a bright pink dress that she knew Vestalia adored seeing her in. Though clearly still quite corpulent, Valles noticed that the Hapian monarch had seemingly lost significant weight, which she quietly approved. Valles had come to see Vestalia as the mother she never had and was quite concerned over her health as she had ballooned to well over 300 kg, and her complexion had started to look a bit pale and somewhat lifeless. But now, Vestalia was perhaps 50 kg lighter, and her face had a rosy tint to it as the lady was smiling ear to ear, clearly delighted to be in Valles's company once again.
"You do wonders for me, dear Valles. I feel better than I have in months, and it started when I learned of your decision to assume the Liannese throne. This is where you truly belong. So … when does Breha arrive?"
"Later today, I believe," Valles smiled. "I'm so looking forward to seeing her as well. She had indicated that she wanted to stay for a bit, so we'll have plenty of time to talk shop, as it were."
A few hours later, the arrival of the Naboo monarch Dalné took place, and she too was shown to the urban palace. Valles came down to the seventh floor, where she was getting settled. As she entered the space, the two queens curtsied to each other, smiling broadly.
"Congratulations, your Majesty!" Dalné sputtered out, excitedly. "I've been wanting to meet you for such a long time."
"I am honored to receive you as well, your Majesty," Valles chirped, then chuckled. "It would be great for our two worlds to work together in the interests of greater Galactic harmony."
Gesturing to her, Valles invited her to talk privately. "I understand that you've been wanting to meet with me, aside from my personal situation."
Nodding, Dalné followed Valles into a small sitting room that featured a view of the gardens below. They sat opposite each other and smiled.
"Thank you, Valles. First of all, I'm so very impressed by all of the responsibility you've taken for the Outer Rim and I wanted to salute you for that. I firmly believe that we women leaders should work together and I'm happy that both Vestalia and Breha will be here."
"I appreciate that, Dalné, and I am in agreement. The idea of an informal alliance among us appeals greatly to me. But I get the feeling you have something more specific you want to discuss."
"I do indeed, Valles. It involves our local Moff, Quarsh Panaka. He once served the Royal House of Naboo as head of our security, but he was also loyal to Senator Palpatine. When the Senator eventually became Emperor, he repaid that loyalty by naming him as the Governor over our sector and two adjoining sectors."
"Okay," Valles nodded gently. "I think I see where you are going with this …"
"Yes, Valles, Panaka has shown more interest in pursuing his ambitions within the Empire than to his home world of Naboo. As the duly elected leader of Naboo, my role has been reduced to being a figurehead."
"I understand, Dalné. You would like it if I might use my influence with the Emperor to restore the royal house and its traditional position."
Dalné nodded, clearly hoping Valles would do this for her, but the Liannese continued.
"I might be amenable to such an arrangement, but at present, I have no reason to openly question Panaka's service to the Empire. From all accounts, he's actually one of the more trustworthy Moffs on the Mid Rim. But ..." she held up her hand. "If you were to swear to an alliance with Lianna and my tributary worlds, something could be arranged. Having Naboo in my orbit, even informally, would be desirable. And I would keep the tribute manageable, say about 20 billion annually."
Dalné soon realized she was perhaps biting off a bit more than she could digest and was wary of making this arrangement. As lovely and congenial as Valles seemed to be, the new Queen of Lianna was a hard-as-nails negotiator, with a seemingly endless appetite.
Valles quickly detected Dalné's hesitation. "No need to decide now, your Majesty. I am simply offering you a possible way out of your current predicament. I well understand Naboo's longtime position in Galactic affairs and am sympathetic to your aims in general."
"Thank you, Valles. I intend to discuss this with some of my advisors."
Valles's com device signal went off, informing her that Queen Breha of Alderaan had just arrived at the Palace. She excused herself from Dalné, but then considered another thought as she went down to the main lobby. Breha and Dalné likely know each other. This presents an opportunity.
As Valles entered the lobby area, Breha had arrived and was being received cordially by the various Liannese dignitaries that were involved in the celebration of Valles's accession to the Throne of Lianna. She was lavishly attired in a series of blue robes and the Crown of Alderaan was on her head. She smiled as each of the men kissed her right hand, but then noticed Valles and decided to meet her now fellow royal halfway.
"Valles! My heartfelt congratulations. How fortunate Lianna is to have you as their new sovereign. I know you will rule with grace and foresight."
Valles laughed. "I'm so happy to see you again, Breha. And quite fortunate we are to be graced by your lovely presence. How is your husband doing?"
Breha smiled. "Just fine. But Valles, this celebration is about you, and I am thrilled to be a part of it."
About an hour later, Breha had settled into her royal suite on the ninth floor and had changed into a simpler dress and was hoping for a quick one-on-one meeting with her hostess. She pulled out her com and contacted Valles with a text:
"Darling, we need to meet. I'm hoping you may be able to assist me at this time. Yours always, Breha."
Valles had returned to her own suite and changed into a long yellow gown and a fur wrap in the same shade. When she saw the text, she was intrigued. Her response:
"Of course we may. Please come to my suite and we can talk privately. Your servant, Valles."
Breha saw the response and was heartened. She soon made her way to Valles's suite and the two greeted each other cordially, exchanging hugs and kisses. Breha followed Valles to a comfortable nook and they looked out over the gardens and across to the park that adjoined the royal residence.
"Care for some tea, Breha?"
"Don't mind if I do, Valles."
After she was served, Breha took a few sips, then sat back and relaxed.
"Valles, I need a favor … nothing big, but some things have happened and I would like to stay on Lianna – quietly – for a while."
Valles stared at her for a second, then smiled. "Your wish is my command, dear Breha. I have over forty separate residences for you to choose from. They are in different parts of the planet and different sizes, or you may reside in orbit where I have an expansive place near our ship construction platforms. Look it over and take your time. I'd be most pleased to have you stay and hope that we may become better acquainted. I've so enjoyed our times together on Hapes and Alderaan."
Breha lowered her head in deference to Valles while remaining seated. "I'd love it if you gave me a tour – unless, perhaps, you are far too busy." She then drank a bit more of the tea. "This is a local blend, perhaps? It's splendid."
"It grows in Livornia, one of our tropical districts. You can tell Duchess Ana about it when you meet her later tonight. It's from her estate."
"Oh, I would love to meet her. It's such an elegant style, and suits my tastes perfectly. Everybody's told me that Lianna is such a civilized world, but this is my first visit. Flying in, I took a good look at everything from our yacht."
"We of course appreciate those compliments, especially from a distinguished lady as yourself, but, Breha, I'm a touch concerned. Is everything alright with you these days?"
"Oh, Valles, thank you. It is … but … I don't want to get into it too much. I just need a change of scenes. Might we spend more time together?"
Valles smiled, somewhat insouciantly. "I'd be delighted." She found herself growing steadily attracted to the elegant and gentle Alderaanian, and felt there was much to be learned from her. Might as well see what she has to offer. I knew there was a reason Vestalia was fond of her.
Breha returned the smile and laughed softly. "Valles, I would be happy to assist you as you settle in to royal life. You may find some things are not quite what you'd expected."
"Well … I won't lie … it is a transition for me. I've grown used to adulation and fawning to some degree, but I suppose it will only grow in intensity. Has that been an issue for you? I know you've had the crown for a long time."
"At first it was, Valles. But I'm from the House of Antilles, one of Alderaan's leading families for quite some time. Marrying Bail was the natural thing for me to do when I was still a princess and I was my father's oldest child. Considering the Alderaanian way, many things were written about my beauty and grace and I was a bit embarrassed at first. I don't suppose that's an issue for you?"
It was Valles's turn to laugh. "Breha, to be totally honest – I love the love they are giving me. Part of me feels that I have earned it, as I've tirelessly worked to make life better for everyone on the planet. And they've wanted me to be Queen for years, it seems. Only now am I ready for it."
The two monarchs finished their tea, and Valles decided she wanted to nap for a while, to rest up for the evening ahead. Breha did the same, but found an elegant chaise lounge to recline on in the room next to Valles's bedroom.
The next day, Breha and Valles awoke about the same time – 1100 hours – and soon joined each other for a light breakfast. The night had been busy as various members of Liannese nobility were greeting Queen Valles and hobnobbing with her many guests, which included royalty from other parts of the Galaxy in addition to Hapes, Alderaan and Naboo. Emperor Palpatine sent word of his admiration for Valles and wished her a long and successful reign as Queen, and apologized that he was unable to attend the celebration. Dalné of Naboo spoke to Breha for a minute and asked if perhaps they could meet together with Valles sometime the next day. Breha, who had spent the night in Valles's suite, mentioned it over breakfast. Valles immediately agreed and sent word for Dalné to join them.
Dalné soon arrived, not wanting to keep her hostess waiting, and was pleasantly surprised how informal Valles seemed to be – at least some of the time. She was invited in and offered a seat at the breakfast table, with both Valles and Breha still in their nightgowns and robes. The three queens then exchanged pleasantries, but then Valles got down to business.
"Have you had a chance to consider my offer, dear?" She asked, glancing at Dalné.
Breha perked up at the mention of that, but kept quiet.
"I have, your majesty. The price might be a bit steep but we can pay it."
Valles chuckled. "I can contact Moff Panaka now, if you like. He will meet with me if I ask for it. This can be settled quickly."
Breha started to wonder what exactly they were referring to, and she spoke up.
"Panaka … you are referring to Quarsh Panaka?"
Valles laughed. "The same."
Dalné started to consider the raw power that Valles was prepared to exercise and knew that such gestures were not to be taken lightly.
Breha also was impressed with how quickly Valles moved to take control of things and her basic aggressive demeanor. But part of her was enthralled that a woman could act this way and found herself admiring her hostess greatly. I see now why Vestalia is so fond of her. Cut from the same cloth, it would seem.
Valles turned to her. "Breha, Dalné was asking if perhaps I might assist her in regaining the normal prerogatives of a Naboo monarch. It seems that the good Moff has been a bit heavy handed in his administrative duties. It would be a shame were I to mention that to the Emperor." Of course, I won't need to ask Sheev anything ...
"Valles," Breha responded gently, "I have some admiration for Panaka. It seems he is one of the good ones, when it comes to Imperial satraps. He is an honest man at heart."
"Hmm," Valles pretended to ruminate. The truth was she was already seeing the opportunity to pull Naboo into her orbit and her personal empire was becoming ever more far-flung. "Breha, I'm sure we can find a spot for him elsewhere on the Mid Rim. Naboo is too important a place to be governed by those with personal axes to grind."
"Um, why would you say that?"
"Because, our friend Dalné here has explained to me about his earlier tenure under the Naboo Crown. Seems he had some policy differences, which pre-date the Clone War. Onetime Senator Amidala was a teenage queen herself and he served under her. So I think, that in the best interests of all involved, we should rectify the situation. I hereby extend my hand in friendship. We can work out the details later."
Breha simply nodded, while Dalné knew this could be costly but Naboo could make up for it. Valles simply added yet another world to those already contributing to the "greater good" of Lianna, which ran directly through the Santhé organization. How much of this filtered down to tributary worlds was a matter of speculation.
Later, Valles met with Vestalia and explained the moves. The Hapian queen was seemingly pleased, but had one question for her young protégé.
"Valles, how do you think Palpatine is viewing all these moves you are making? Naboo is still his home world, after all."
Valles simply shrugged. "I've heard nothing but praise from him thus far. I'm not entirely sure exactly what his thoughts are on it."
"Could it be that you are his new apprentice, perhaps? Though you don't exactly fit the Sith profile."
"And I have never wanted to. My own view is that the Sith were too narrow in their approach. Greater power can be achieved by less direct methods."
Vestalia seemingly purred, as Valles relaxed in her lap. "I will point this much out to you. Your Force profile is truly becoming formidable. It might be that no one stands in your way eventually."
Valles turned serious. "There is one exception. A Togruta, who lives on Felucia. She is rather impressive herself."
Vestalia also grew serious. "I know of whom you speak. I have an eye on her. She could be very useful for us."
Valles simply chuckled. "That's how I see it as well. But for now, she is better as an ally."
"Yes … I see your point, my dear. But for now, we shall have to deal with Palpatine. Three against one? I like those odds."
Yavin IV, 0 BBY, 1 month, 17 days
[This scene is a recap for the same event in Ahsoka and the Rebellion, chapter 22.]
Ahsoka Tano and her now romantic interest Tri'ku Je'har of Almania, were on the rebel base on the fourth moon of the gas giant planet Yavin. They met with Senators Garm Bel Iblis, Mon Mothma, and Bail Organa. Ahsoka told the senators about their successful destruction of two more Imperial Star Destroyers. The Empire had attempted to re-subjugate that planet, and Ahsoka was given the go ahead by Shaak to assist the Mandalorians in resisting the Empire. Using the Circle of Light technique – this time on her own – Ahsoka was able to destroy the Exterminator VI. Her old friend, Bo Katan Kryze, had held the Mandalorian forces together on the ground and defeated a battalion of stormtroopers. Once the ISD had been blown out of the sky, Kryze gave her thanks to Ahsoka and pledged her full loyalty to the Rebellion.
Shaak Ti had led another destruction, this one of the ISD Annihilator IV in the Hutt Space sector from her ship Intrepid V. Ahsoka mentioned this as well to the rebel leaders. Bel Iblis lauded the destruction but then expressed his concern that the Death Star could soon make all of this irrelevant. Je'har summarized what they had learned regarding the Death Star's vulnerability via the exhaust ports, but admitted they could not expect to find those ports without a detailed schematic diagram of the station. Mothma then asked Ahsoka if she could somehow – perhaps with Shaak – get ahold of the plans. The Togruta told the group that they would need to go to the planet Scarif, where the Death Star's construction had been finalized. She and Shaak had come to believe the plans were in a computer on the surface below but the planet was well guarded. They would need to find a way to get through the shield and that would require an Imperial vessel. Ahsoka mentioned that she had a TIEv1 ship that she had used to get off the planet Malachor about two years earlier and that this ship was currently on Almania, also in the northeastern Outer Rim.
Organa noted this mission would be most difficult, perhaps even suicidal. After the meeting, he introduced Ahsoka and Tri'ku to Jyn Erso, the estranged daughter of Galen Erso, who had been involved in the design and construction of the Death Star. They also met with Cassian Andor, another rebel officer who was planning to take Jyn Erso to Jedha, in order to meet with Saw Gerrera, who was supposed to have a message for her from her father. This message had been intercepted by an Imperial pilot who had defected, but was being held by Gerrera and his men on Jedha. Ahsoka informed Andor that she was an old friend of Gerrera's and had recently met with him on Sullust. She told Saw about the Imperial plan to use the Death Star to fire a test shot of the massive laser on Jedha. Ahsoka agreed to go with Andor and Jyn Erso to Jedha in the next few days.
Ahsoka and Tri'ku Je'har then returned to Felucia and met with Shaak to bring her up to speed on the situation. Shaak expressed concern that Ahsoka was taking too many chances and that she might have to face the full might of the Empire. Ahsoka agreed that it would be dangerous, but it also was their best shot at victory. Shaak then told her to go to Tatooine and inform Obi-Wan Kenobi of their intentions, and to bring Maris along with her and Tri'ku. Before they left, Ahsoka brought Maris up to speed on the situation with Luke Skywalker and that he was actually the son of Anakin Skywalker, whom they both knew had become Darth Vader. Luke didn't know this, but Shaak felt the time was right to bring him into the rebellion and that Obi-Wan would understand. This was now a make-or-break situation and the rebels had to go all-in.
To be continued …
