Accidental Villain?
Just a little thing before we start, this version of Jaune doesn't have the best family life so sorry in advance if this affects some people.
Also I own nothing, just thought it would be a funny spin on the show
See the bottom for Easter eggs in this chapter.
Jaune Arc is a promising scientist in a world of heroes with amazing Semblances, he sets out in the world to try and develop a cure for insomnia, but the sinister Dr Merlot has plans to make it a subconscious mind altering drug to give him an army of people willing to follow him…
Okay I swear I never meant to blow up my ex lab, or hold a bank hostage, or steal from a warehouse, or blow up an armoured truck, or destroy a nightclub (technically not my fault), or fight a team of heroes (2 separate teams, 2 different locations) or somehow gain an arch-nemesis (She says we are but I don't really know who she is, so that's awkward). Look it has been a week so I will start as most stories need to from … well I guess the start would be smart right?
School was great fun wasn't it? To chance to learn more, to take tests, access to the library and whatever books on maths and physics that he really wanted to read, even the advanced ones that for some reason didn't seem that advanced. It was all simple stuff that made a lot of sense, why anybody was so confused about it all was really strange to young Jaune.
When he tried to explain the basic principles of trigonometry and how it would help his team win in the little game of football they were playing during break time, they all looked at him like he was speaking old Mistralian, granted the language was very difficult to now speak and it was more to be read, but the comparison still made sense.
When he was asked to write a little book report on his favourite book by the teacher one day in class he was excited to be given the chance to talk about some of the fundamental forces of the universe. Surely the class would be interested in the laws of energy and mechanics, when he first started to read about gravity and its effect on objects as well as how numerous theories showed how it warped time; he was ecstatic!
He patiently sat and waited while his fellow classmates handed in their reports about their favourite books, one girl that sat next to him said that she had done hers on the comic book based on the Number One hero: The Professor Ozpin. Heroes were cool, but honestly science was even cooler! The discovery of semblances and the knowledge that everyone had one and they would develop around your 5th or 6th birthday was honestly a big change for the world, but science had been there since the beginning and they had achieved so much through the application of science.
The good majority of his classmates had developed their powers earlier in the year and Jaune had been amazed, asking them to try out various different things and noting down how it all worked, one girl had managed to pull a pencil from her arm and Jaune had watched several times and even given her the knowledge to try and create various other objects, she had so far managed to make several other pencil case objects and even a plate. However the teacher had told Jaune to leave her alone after he had been spending so much time around the girl wanting to know the true source of her creation semblance and the girl had said that he was starting to annoy her.
He hadn't discovered what his special semblance was but that didn't matter to him, he had the mysteries of the universe and science to discover and that came before him. These were questions that people had been asking for far longer than we had semblances. So when he handed in his book report he went back to his seat and began to read while the teacher went through all of the reports, most of the students had written a page or so, Jaune had done 8 pages front and back filled up with his signature messy, but still readable hand writing. He had read in one of the science books that most of the physicist's had messy handwriting and they referenced that it was a sign of intelligence.
As Jaune read through a new book he had gotten from the library (Chemistry: the basics) he was lost in the world of chemicals and experiments, this was almost as good as physics! The teacher called on him to stay after the class once she had a quick look through his book report, the look in her eyes was one of concern and worry; however Jaune was unable to detect those emotions and he instead just saw his teacher only looking down at him from her standing position.
Once everyone had left the room Jaune stood with a smile on his little face, messy blond hair falling over one of his eyes that he pushed back behind his ear and made his ways to the front of the class where some old maths equations were; the 7 and 8 times tables if he was not mistaken, he enjoyed reciting those to himself on the way to school and when he was heading to bed.
"Jaune, did you get this from one of your older sisters?" the teacher asked, she was aware the 7 year old had 7 older sisters and that perhaps one of them had done this homework for him, by her knowledge there were 3 that were at the level of university although she expected the family to follow more in their parents Hero footsteps.
"No Mrs, they don't really care for science much. They don't really seem to understand when I start talking about it, most of the time they tell me not to talk about it because they don't understand it." Jaune said with that same cheery innocent smile on his bright young features, this was why she enjoyed being a teacher, the chance to see her students before the weight of the world settled on their shoulders.
"So you are telling me you really wrote this all by yourself? With no help from your parents either?" She couldn't help but let the disbelief from her voice but she suspected the young child couldn't detect anything.
"Oh Dad doesn't understand science either. He always tells me to stop speaking 'nonsense' and Mum is more focused on training the rest of my sisters on how to be heroes; Janet broke 100 miles per hour yesterday when they went flying." He had such pride in his sisters, they were so cool.
"Sorry Jaune it is hard for me to understand that you managed to write this as these are very advanced for your age – this right here: A body at rest will-"
"-remain at rest and a body in motion will stay in motion unless is acted on by an external force. That's the first law of motion in physics, most people tend to know the third law more commonly, but I think that the first is the most important. The second law is force equals mass times acceleration, which again is very important."
The teacher was slightly baffled, she knew that Jaune was a bright young boy; he always conveyed it in his words when he spoke was always eager to learn in lessons and spent all his break and lunch in the library. Most likely she realised now, pouring over science books and trying to take in as much learning as he could.
"Yes they are, I remember them from my time in secondary school."
"Oh so cool! Does that mean I get to learn even more about them there? Do I get to do some of the experiments I have read about in the chemistry book I'm reading? Do you know it? Here it is!" Jaune very excitedly fumbled with his large backpack and struggled to pull out a hefty science book with a picture of the periodic table on it.
"It mentions the periodic table and I can't wait to try some tests on some of the elements in there! I talked to Dad about maybe making up some kind of science demonstration for the talent show this year, he said he might be able to make it and I want to build something cool, not a volcano because come on; who is impressed by that after reading these things? I was thinking-"
"Jaune the talent show is for children who have unlocked their semblances and can show off what they have managed to learn about them. You haven't unlocked yours."
"But science Mrs! That is way cooler than semblances, trust me it will be awesome!"
The teacher didn't want to wipe the smile from the young boys face, she knew it must have been hard for him watching everyone unlock a power far beyond him and him just having to sit back and watch it. 'Poor boy he must think he has to do this to show that he means something.'
'This is going to be so awesome! I could make a laser sword! I just need a crystal, which that girl who makes things could help me make the crystal and then I can do the rest; it's only a little bit of basic engineering. FOR SCIENCE!'
'Poor boy indeed, look at him lost in sad thoughts.' "Okay Jaune I will put your name down on the list."
"Thank you Mrs, you are the best teacher ever, now all I need are the materials and a really big rock!" She watched him run out of the class and then run back in to grab the book from her hands, she sat back down in her chair and sighed sadly, this was not going to end well for him but who was she to crush a child's dream like that? That wasn't what teachers do.
The day of the talent show had parents sitting in the stands and Jaune was so excited, this was going to be so cool! He had it all set up and ready, he even got one of the teachers to make a large wall of cement for him when he went onto the stage and right now Cardin was just finishing up his display. He was about to lift up a car when he grabbed it and the bumper on the front ripped off from his strength, Jaune remembered telling him to lift it from the bottom as the bumper would rip off with his force. He still managed to lift the whole thing above his head for a second before he had to put it down, he got a nice round of applause from the audience and Jaune clapped a lot for his classmate, he hadn't started the biology book yet but he was sure that Cardin would be interesting to watch perform tests to see bone and muscle density.
Now it was his turn.
Jaune stepped onto stage, holding his bag near to him, he couldn't spot his Dad in the crowd, or his Mum, but he did see Saphron and her good friend Terra, so he gave them a little wave. They didn't wave back, but they were facing each other and talking very closely, he was pretty sure their lips were touching, but surely that was ineffective for talking? Either way they were here and they were going to show support and that was all Jaune was concerned about at the moment, he hadn't realised how big the stage was when he was on it.
He stepped up to the microphone. "Hello everyone I'm Jaune and I am going to show you science!" the little crack in his voice probably gave away how nervous he was feeling right now.
The audience was a buzz with excitement, he even heard one person ask if he was serious, like he couldn't believe he was this lucky to see science; 3 people even had to leave for the toilet because they were so excited.
Opening up his bag, Jaune drew out his laser sword hilt version MK1, there were a lot of cross crossing wires and some parts were exposed however Jaune knew that he could certainly improve upon the design and get it close to how it looks in the films. "Inside this handle is a crystal which functions as the power source as well as some advanced circuitry, I will be using this to cut through this solid cement wall!" He gestured to his left where the teacher was supposed to make a solid wall of cement for him.
Nothing happened…
"This wall." He tried again and still nothing happened, a few more people stood up and went to the toilet, probably to check on the other people that they hadn't passed out from the anticipation while on the toilet, that would be embarrassing. "Mr Cementos?" Jaune called out and then a wall of cement appeared on his left. "Thank you Mr."
Turning back to his audience, Jaune noticed that most of his classmates had now joined the audience and were talking with what parents were left, even the judges were talking with the parents, wow they must really be excited for the science show. Even Saphron and Terra had stopped talking closely and were now talking to his main teacher Mrs Ikoma and they were pointing at him sometimes, oh yeah he couldn't forget what he was supposed to do.
So he ignited the sword and a bright green blade extended from the hilt and stopped when it was near 90 centimetres, this stunned the whole audience as everyone was now staring right at Jaune as he then turned and swung it through the cement wall and sliced it right in half, with very little effort. He then turned off the blade and held it out in his hand to the stunned silent audience.
"The blade itself it made up of light energy and therefore does not weight anything, the other components of the handle are fairly simple to understand if you have a basic grasp of engineering, I kinda read all I could overnight and made this as best as I could this morning and I would like to say thank you to Momo for providing me with a crystal with the right atomic properties to fully create the 'lightsaber!'" Jaune proclaimed proudly to the stunned audience.
"So that is my science demonstration. Thank you." Jaune still stood on the stage waiting for the polite clapping that usually happened after each child showed off their ability... still waiting... maybe they were all to amazed, so taking that into consideration Jaune quickly left the stage and ran over to his eldest siter and gave her a big hug around her waist.
"Did you see that Saph? I made light like you do!" His sister gave him a large smile, showing a lot of teeth... and she kept that smile up the whole ride home.
The next day the Arc house was visited by three men in suits that had a long talk with Mr and Mrs Arc about their son and then they also had a talk with Jaune about how he could not make anything that could be used in such a way and then they took the lightsaber from him, with him promising to never make something like that again. After the three men in suits had gone, his parents yelled at him about how he could have been hurt and what a stupid thing it was to do.
"But Dad, I just wanted to show everyone about science!"
"You should be focusing on your semblance!"
"But what if I don't have one, science can he-"
"Then you are useless! I have been patient with you for too long now Jaune, your sisters all had a semblance at 5 years old! You are 7 now and are still powerless! It is a disgrace, imagine what would happen if everyone found out about how much of a joke you really are!"
Jaune froze in fear; maybe compared to the demonstrations at the talent show he had been a little useless. The other entire Arc's all stood still and traded glances at each other as they watched Jaune's head drop. "Sorry Dad." And then he turned around and slowly walked up stairs to his room, nobody called to stop him. The next day was a school day again and Jaune grabbed all the things he needed for school and the next book in the trilogy of science; Biology-how the world and the people in it live. It promised to be a good read and hopefully he could have it finished by the end of the day even with his lessons.
His dad was at the breakfast table and Jaune gave him a small 'good morning' but he didn't even look up and then Saphron walked in. "Morning Dad."
"Hello sweetie." Maybe his dad didn't hear him speak up, but his sister could see him. "Hello Saph." He watched as she twitched for a second but then told dad that she would be with Terra after she finished work. She then left the kitchen and made her way to the front door, Jaune scrambled to grab a banana and his school bag before racing to the front door, Saphron always dropped him off at school before she went to her internship at the hero agency. But this time the car wasn't there.
So Jaune went back into the house to see if Dad would give him a ride to school or maybe Mum who he saw in the living room before they had to go to their own agency, they had been heroes together for so long now.
He quickly ran to his dad, surely he would help him out, but his dad just looked at him and said "Why bother with you Jaune, you have no semblance, no spirit and all you care about is science, maybe that can find a way to look after you. Because until you prove you are not useless, not a single one of us will help you out."
Jaune was terrified right now; his dad was just going to pretend he didn't exist? "I had such hopes for you Jaune; I thought you were going to be a great hero. Now I just see a helpless child, not worthy of his family."
Leaving the house Jaune cried all the way on the walk to school, he made it there late but still in time for the first lesson.
He didn't bother to tell anybody about what had happened at home, he wasn't worthy of any help.
Secondary school was everything that Jaune had dreamed it would be when he first arrived at the tender age of 12. The science building was amazing. Sure it wasn't like the things he saw in the books he read, but it was the closest thing he had to them right now and that was the greatest thing in the history of ever for him right now and all that mattered in this moment. He had managed to get in to this school by passing his tests with flying colours, the questions were all very basic maths and English questions, no science which was a bit of a bummer but this department more than made up for it. And when he walked into the science storage room he was in love, plain and simple, the beakers, the vials, the liquids, the elements, the testing equipment was beautiful. Stuff he had only ever seen in pictures was here right in-front of his face and ready for him to play with.
And now at the tender age of 16 he was still loving everything about the school, he had even over heard several of his teachers talking about him; throwing around words like smartass, overachiever and know-it-all. Jaune didn't think that he knew it all but he was determined to do his best to know most things, he didn't think he should know everything, then there would be no surprises and he was certain that if future friends ever wanted to plan him a surprise birthday then it wouldn't be nice to know it was going to happen.
He had of course been a little bit upset when the staff told him that he didn't get to pick what equipment he wanted for the lessons and had to follow the lesson plan, but he still got to play around. He wondered if he asked nice enough maybe he could take some back to his basement and try some testing in there?
Oh yeah about that, he had to move down under the large Arc house. He actually rarely saw his family as they didn't really want him to come upstairs to talk to them or be around them, in fact the last good conversation he had with them was when he waved goodbye to Saphron as she moved in with her best friend Terra. He didn't even manage to speak then just wave from the background as the whole family shared hugs and kisses, when Jaune tried to step up to say something, she was already in the car and away and the family was back inside, front door locked before he could turn around. That was when he had found the opening to the basement, a shattered window in a cold and desolate room, it was now home, Jaune had spent his time and hard earned lien (got a job at the local corner shop managing the finances, he was good with maths after all and managed to somehow turn over a very steep profit for them), now the area had a bed and even some cooking stuff. Mum never made enough for him after that day, so he stopped expecting it from her, he wasn't worthy of it anyway.
But the science building was amazing, so much to do and the library was even bigger and better than he could have imagined and instead of a book case of science books, they had a section! A whole section of science books! This was easily the greatest day of Jaunes life.
And to top it all off he found out that there was actually a science fair here! An honest to Orm science fair where he could show off his invention, he had been working on it for so long and now he had all the materials he needed, the ultra-adhesive gloves was going to be amazing, to be able to stick to anything and to scale anything.
When the day of the fair came around there were tons of students milling around and Jaune stood behind his desk with the equipment ready to give it to the first person that wanted to try it out. A group of five guys all came over to Jaune and he smiled politely. "Hey there guys, wanna see what I made?"
The guys all sniggered "Sure thing semblaless." And then came the laughter, but Jaune was used to it. He didn't care anymore, not since he found that science could mostly replicate the semblances of nearly everyone.
"The adhesive gloves can last for up to 2 hours of constant use and will allow you to stick to most surfaces and scale walls." Jaune demonstrated by putting on his gloves and then using his hands to walk himself up the wall. "Or stick-um-powers, but that name still needs some more work." He then pulled his hands off the wall. "I managed to get it exactly like a spiders limbs, the tiny hair will retract when you are relaxed and pulling away. So what do you think?"
The boys all stared blankly at him. "So you just recreated what a little bug can do?"
"Technically spiders are arachnids, but yes I did. Most of the inspiration for a lot of scientific inventions comes from the world around us." Jaune said proudly as the boys all looked dumbfounded, not really difficult given the overall of their intelligence made up a third of Jaune's.
"Let's go." Said one of the guys as they all turned away and walked off, Jaune's smile didn't deflate however, he was proud of his work, and he was confident that he could extend the time and make it last for a whole day if needed.
As they left Jaune thought about how maybe he should start to take inspiration from other things in the world, maybe not animals and their abilities, but instead maybe he should look at the heroes to see how he could replicate their powers to be more accessible for the other people. Most of the powers were very useful for everyday life.
That new hero that appeared on the scene and had been climbing the ranks was really cool, she seemed to have telekinesis as she made a lot of objects float in the air when she was in a fight so maybe he should focus on an anti-gravity device to float objects and make search and rescue even easier, and it would help ease the burden of the hero.
After the fair Jaune looked into her using her powers and she was really cool, and very beautiful, like stunningly so. Jaune was positive that she must have a secondary semblance to just be beautiful; Jaune wondered if he would ever get that beautiful or handsome, actually he wondered if anyone would ever give him a compliment about anything to do with him.
Watching Glynda Goodwitch or as she was better known; The Disciplinarian, use her amazing power Jaune noted that it was almost effortless for her and she had almost no trouble, she just couldn't use it on people as he watched several moments where she could of held people in place but instead used the building around her to incapacitate them. Still really, really awesome.
Turning off his homemade computer Jaune gets to work right in his basement and starts to make what he thinks should work well for him.
The next day in the quad Jaune is sipping on his orange juice and watching a bird in flight, maybe he should try and designs some kind of winged flight suit? He made a little note in his note book to look into Falcons later to see what he could do about it. Looking across the quad he saw the same group of boys from the day before talking to some of the girls and laughing with them, one of them even pointed over to him and they all laughed again, he just waved back happy. Maybe this was the opening for friendship! Finally he had read so many studies that showed that friendship was often the driving force for many great achievements in life.
The boys were now coming over to him this was great! One was cracking his knuckles however and while there was no direct correlation between that and arthritis he still needed to be careful, Jaune would let him know. As they got close enough Jaune stood up to tell them and also ask them how their day was when a tree root burst from the ground and wrapped around his foot and tripped him up. Now while he was drinking his orange juice he had also been fiddling with his new technology he had made last night, he meant to show it to Mrs Paterson as she was supposed to be on lunch break outside of the science building right now and Jaune loved the chance to talk to his favourite teachers, but lately they had been more and more distant from him, always saying that they had stuff to do, well those tests weren't going to grade themselves! And it's not like they could get bored of him talking to them about science right? That was their life wasn't it?
The little trip from the root had caused him to activate the device and slip out of his hand to the group of boys. It activated and sent them all flying up into the air near the roof of the science department and then after a second it dropped them all and they landed with loud groans and cries of pain.
Jaune was horribly sorry and embarrassed; it wasn't supposed to last for a second or 2 but actually meant to last for a minute. Well that just meant more testing. The boys all picked themselves up and ran away from him as well.
There goes his chance at friends, because nobody else at the school would talk to him after that.
If you told Jaune that back when he first picked that science book off of that dusty shelf back in Primary school he would have the chance to go to one of the most prestigious schools in all of Remnant right here in Vale on a full science scholarship, young Jaune back then would have had a nose bleed at the thought of something like that. Now that he was living the fantasy he had no idea how he didn't wake up every day without doing a little celebratory dance of excitement.
Now at 20 Jaune was enjoying his university life as a science major, soon he even hoped to take the Doctorate and become the youngest in the university! That would be so cool!
He had moved out of the basement and had a very small apartment in the city, literally a one room place in Vale's Mistraltown section; great takeout and ingredients for cooking, and over the years Jaune had become an expert in cooking. It was like a science experiment that he got to eat, how could he not like it?
Today however he was feeling really good, he knew that this university had a multitude of students that attended and he had found one other student that shared a passion as fierce as he did for their subject: Weiss Schnee. She had come over because of her powerful semblance to summon knights and monsters; she was like a character from the RPG that Jaune sometimes played!
Jaune had crossed paths with her and she was an angel, she had a beautiful voice and beautiful blue eyes. And he more often than not heard that voice and had those eyes on him; she always made a show of their conversations.
Walking across the main space outside all of the building he spotted Weiss surrounded by her fellow classmates from the advanced semblance lessons, she stood out so much that Jaune knew that one day she was going to be an amazing Hero, how could she not? With the level of dedication she showed in her subject and the passion she had for her work it would only make more and more sense for her to be in the top 10, Jaune couldn't tell you the names of the top 10 other than maybe 1, 2 and 3 but he knew that once Weiss was number 1 then he would be paying a lot of attention. He made his way over to her and smiled and waved when she noticed him coming, oh she even started to move over to him to speak, she must have been egger to talk to him as she was to him; that was a first for him.
"Hello, h-hi Weiss, you w-wow-w look rea-"
"Jaune Arc; do you really want to do this again?" she knew his full name! Nobody else had ever bothered to learn his full name but she did.
"W-w-well I guess, I thought that maybe we – I mean you would want to – if you would like to that is, uh…" he hated how much of a mess he became after he spoke to her, she had this affect where he almost lost the ability to speak, well in all honesty it wasn't just her, any beautiful girl had that effect on him... actually so did every girl... and so did every guy as well, okay it was difficult to talk to people, at least with animals he could feed them and they would hang around while he spoke, most of the people were not as interested in his ramblings, but with Weiss right now that was going to change. "To go see a movie… with me of course, I will be there and hopefully you will, no pressure naturally and you can say no-"
"No."
"Oh, right well…"
"When are you going to get it through your head Jaune, we are not in the same league. You are not good enough to be with me." And then she turned on her heel and strolled away.
Jaune hung his head; she didn't say anything he didn't already know. Weiss deserved the best and while Jaune would have tried everything he could to make her happy, but the truth is he didn't know anything about music, but he would be willing to learn for her. He did hear that she didn't like most of the Mistral style food places he lived near, and he really loved them and cooked a lot of them. Maybe he should learn to make some Atlas style food? What even is Atlas style food?
This train of thought he was on was shattered as a large body came charging and crashing through the main reception building, bulldozing through it like it was made of paper and smashing through the statue in the centre of the university.
The man had several crystals embedded into his arms and didn't have a single scratch on him at all. The students all around leapt into a panic and started running and screaming away from the large man, they might have semblances, but that didn't mean they were brave enough to use them. Instinctively Jaune looked over to Weiss to see what she was doing and saw that she was stuck in the middle of a group of students trying to charge past her out of the university grounds.
Then came a bright purple object that flew over the roofs of the building and flattened the large man and then Glynda Goodwitch herself floated down on a piece of rubble and stood bravely in-front of the crushed man.
He then pushed the car off of him and charged at The Disciplinarian who waved her riding crop and a steel beam smacked him in the chest sending him off course and through a wall. He retaliated immediately by throwing a table from inside the building at her which she stopped in-front of her but he tore through that and tried to hit her, but was met with a bench upper cutting him.
Jaune watch this all in amazement, he was not ashamed to say that he had a Glynda Goodwitch t-shirt and mug combo, she was such a cool hero and her semblance was one of the most versatile he had ever seen. But he realised something, her opponent either had invincibility or he was the manifestation of the first law of motion, if so then he would always stay in motion, until something held him in place and The Disciplinarian didn't have the semblance to fully stop him, nobody really would, that meant that science would have to do!
Jaune ran across to the chemistry lab, he had the formula for a glue grenade that he had been working on he just needed a suitable binding agent and then it would work out perfectly for him, he was certain of it.
Charging through the labs and then bounding up the stairs at a speed he never knew he possessed; he found the storage cupboard and wrenched the door open, inside were tons upon tons of different vials and he pulled out one from his bag, it was the base formula he just needed… ah there it was. Perfect now he just needed to mix it all together and hey presto he would have his glue grenade!
Unfortunately as he poured the vial in, the large man smashed right through into the science building and the resulting quakes caused another chemical to splash into the vial that Jaune held.
It started to bubble…
"Oh that's not good." Jaune said out loud to himself only to hear a growl behind him, he then turned around and saw the large man who locked eyes with him and began to walk over to Jaune, once he pushed himself out of the locker that was wrapped around his neck. "Oh… you're scary."
"You didn't need to die boy." He said in a deep gravelly voice as he raised both his fists in the air to slam down onto Jaune, but he bolted to the side and the fist just smashed down into the ground where he was stood last and cracked the floor, sending a powerful shockwave that hit the fleeing Jaune.
Jaune slide across the floor outside of a class room and then smacked right into the door as the shock wave was really strong, shaking his head he quickly stood up and fumbled with the handle and opened the door, making sure to shut it behind him just as the man ran through the wall. "Ever heard of knocking?" Jaune questioned nervously.
The door then flew off its hinges as it shattered against the man, Glynda Goodwitch had arrived and the attention was now focused on her. As the big guy turned towards her Jaune threw the glass vial at him and it broke on his chest spilling the liquid on his shirt, everyone in the room looked at Jaune and even Jaune looked at his own feet awkwardly as nothing happened… then he remembered.
"It needs water!" he yelled out loud as he turned and ran for the sink at the side of the room, and turning the tap on to fill up his water bottle. As it filled up Jaune turned to look at the hero and the villain and they were… both staring at him like he grew a third arm.
"Uh, hi there." He said awkwardly and then The Disciplinarian launched a bookshelf at her opponent and knocked him to the floor, she tried to hold him there but he was clearly a juggernaut and burst through the metal and charged at Jaune who panicked and splashed the water onto his chest and dived out of the way as the large man blasted through the wall and into the laboratory in the next room. Jaune then scrambled to his feet and watched through the hole in the wall as the man turned around glared at him, took a step forward and then another and tried to take a third, but then the glue exploded around him in to a large foam which wrapped around his whole body and even his face and he couldn't struggle against it because he couldn't make any motion to activate his semblance.
Jaune then realised that there is a chance that this man could suffocate and die and he turned to the hero who already raised her hand and broke off the chunk of foam on his face revealing the unconscious man. Jaune let out a sigh of relief and smiled sheepishly at the hero. "H-hello, you're a fan and I'm beautiful."
Glynda looked at the young man with confusion. "What are you saying?"
Jaunes eyes then widened as he realised he got that backwards. "Sorry I uh, I meant you are b-beautiful and I am a big *gulp* a big fan, sorry. I Jaune… I mean; I am Jaune. Jaune Arc." He said in a stuttering mess, this might be the longest he had gone without having to use science as a talking point.
"Well Jaune, what you did; while helpful, was also very dangerous and foolish. You could have gotten yourself seriously hurt or killed." She scolded and Jaune felt bad, he had probably gotten in her way, probably caused more harm and destruction then necessary. "With that being said, Hazel Reinhart is a notoriously tough opponent to defeat and you did it with…?"
"Uh glue ma'am, it was supposed to be glue, but I think an added chemical changed to composition somehow to hardened foam, which honestly worked out better. But I still need to run a few tests on it, maybe try something else added in to make it faster acting and better to use an-"
"Jaune, it worked out well enough. Despite your foolish attitude, you did well here. Now I will be taking Hazel away."
And then a purple glow surrounds the foam and lifts the unconscious Hazel into the air and hops on top of him and together they float out of the hole that Hazel had originally smashed through when he entered the science building, it was a very big hole, and she lowers him down to the authorities. Jaune avoids the hole and moves over to the window and watches it all even as Glynda turns to look up at him one last time and nods in his direction.
It is the first time that someone has said that he had done a good job of something, Jaune just wished it wasn't one of the only times.
At the grand old age of 21 Jaune had managed to finish all of the required work for his university schedule, he even threw himself a little party and invited some people from his science classes out for maybe a fun quiz night or to do an escape room. Nobody got back to him but come on, who checked their emails in the week anyway?
Realising that the places were now booked up and Jaune was essentially done with university and had managed to pay off half his debts, working for that corner shop had actually made him quite a bit of lien and from his scholarship into the university he managed to cover the costs easily.
Now though it was time for him to look for a job to change the world, and he thought he had found it; MERLOT Tech Conglomerate. The major company for supplying the heroes with their equipment, medicine, transport, communications, recreational and also Jaune had heard that they had even tried to break out into the energy business. Jaune had some ideas about that, he had proposed the creation of a new element back when he was in his last year of secondary school; he said he could even do it in a cave with a box of scraps if needed, so long as he had about 2ish grams of palladium and a car battery.
The interview had been very strange, they had left him in a room and but a simple bunch of equations in-front of him, telling him that Dr Merlot himself had solved them, but he hadn't. They were unbalanced and none of the figures matched, so while the interviewer broke out the questions Jaune ignored her and stood up in-front of the board and wiped away all of his 'hard work' and started from scratch, if they were going to do this they were going to do this right.
Turns out that had earned him his place in the companies Bio-chemistry lab working on a few different types of medicine; some to do with stress and anxiety and a new kind of sleeping medicine that could give you however many hours of sleep you needed.
It had been 4 months now and Jaune had made some serious head way and he even got to do other experiments and create some of his own things on the side, this place was the best!
Until he discovered the unfortunate side effect with his current model of the pills, and that Dr Merlot wanted it shipped out exactly how it was.
"Doctor in its current state the pill can cause at best memory loss, maybe even mind alteration all together making them susceptible to subconscious messages." Jaune began. "And that is just the sleeping pill, the ones for stress and anxiety end up replacing them with rage and violent thoughts, it is not safe for the people, think of what the wrong hands could do with that power." Jaune pleaded of his boss.
"Dr Arc, I am well aware of the potential of this miracle you have managed to create, but I am telling you it is ready for the public, this is going to help the world. People all over Remnant are going to be able to finally rest, and if they wake up wanting to buy more of my products and make me a richer man; then who should I be to stop them?"
Jaune couldn't believe what he was hearing; Dr Merlot was a man of science! Surely he wouldn't want a world where all the people thought the same because of a pill? A world where everyone only acted on their thoughts of anger and nothing else? The differences of people gave them such a variety of results and points that sometimes he hadn't even considered. In his opinion having a widely different group of people review his actions was for the better, he could get the greatest results that way in the end.
Oh and also it was wrong as well and all that ethical stuff.
"But doctor I just don't believe it is right-"
"Jaune remember I have a semblance that allows me to see the future. And I can see it all working out well for me Dr Arc." And the Merlot walked away, leaving Jaune with nothing but a deadline and a sinking feeling in his heart.
Merlot did have a semblance, but it wasn't telling the future. It was suggestion, he could plant ideas into the mind of weak minded people and they would carry it out, they would be slightly confused about it but they would still do it. Although from what Jaune had observed it wore off quickly after the task was completed, but if he gave Merlot that formula there is no telling what he would be able to do with his power.
Knowing that this medicine could potentially ruin lives Jaune makes the hardest decision, he has to destroy his own creation and turn his back on science, but only briefly, not for too long though. He waited for when it was getting to the time for him to leave and then as he left the lab he pulled out his camouflage cloak and threw it around him. It wasn't invisibility like he saw the hero do from the Happy Huntress agency, but it was the next best thing and it fooled the cameras in the lab.
He then set about and deleted everything he had about the medicine on computer files, he tore his notes up and burned them, and he pulls out hard-drives and steps on them. He even moves over to the only synthesised product that he has made and superheats it so that it is incinerated from existence. And that removes the last shred of evidence from his design, now all there was to do was to leave and come back tomorrow and look as shocked as the other scientist when they come in tomorrow morning.
The lab doors burst open and 2 large guards with electric batons come into the lab and see a floating computer held in the air and look confused, Jaune's camouflage then chose to cut out at that moment and reveal him to the 2.
"Burt, Ernie."
"Dr Arc."
"D-don't suppose you are going to let me off with a warning?"
"We've been wanting to do this for a while Arc, you've always been a weird freak." Jaune takes none of that to heart as he is pretty sure he got their names backwards so it just proves their point. He does however throw the computer at them with full force and manages to catch one of them in the chest as he tries to run past them, the other one swings out with the baton almost catching him around the face.
Scrambling back Jaune has the only safe exit blocked from him, but he has a plan, a mad, mad plan. Turning towards the window he runs up to it and opens it as wide as he can. Turning around he touches his watch as he brings his arm up to defend him from the swing and a hard light kite shield appears in-between him and Burt… at least he is pretty sure it is Burt. Anyway it doesn't matter to much as the shield absorbs the energy and he blasts it out in a horizontal arc, sending both of them flying into the opposite wall.
Jaune then turns to jump out the window, but trips over one of the smashed computers and falls out instead.
As he is falling he tries to stay calm, but with the ground approaching and him being up about 27 stories he wasn't exactly in the most stable of minds right now.
"I HOPE THIS WORKS!" Jaune cries out.
He very quickly uses the shield as a paraglider and parachute to slow his decent and lands somewhat safely on the ground with a thud. He realises that this is almost like that movie he watched a while back and as he gets up and walks away towards where his little apartment is he even says one of the lines the main spy usually does "Light the fuse." He says quietly.
BOOOOM
An explosion comes out of the building that he just left, specifically the very floor that he was just on. The people that were around him look at him and then back up at the building and then back to Jaune and then the building.
"Uhhhh, strange night for snow right?" he weakly says as people begin to take out their scrolls. At that point he bolts from the scene running home as fast as he possibly can.
Making it into his little apartment he took a deep breath and sat down, newspapers were just above where his head was and they showed the page whenever a scientific achievement had managed to make the front page, so far there were three up, he really wanted to make the fourth one. The the side table next to his single bed were several post-it-notes.
'BUY MILK!'
'Magnesium is needed'
'Look in to magnets; could be rewarding'
'Dr Oobleck has a seminar in Aug, GO!'
'Need a new toaster'
'If you ever need a new name: Philipe!'
'New catch phrase for life: Semper Paratus'
Near the sink he had his one set of cutlery and a plate and bowl, right next to them was the still broken toaster that either made burnt toast or just gave you bread back. The little fridge he had was full of magnets of all the elements and he arranged them in whatever order he wanted, currently it was in shortest name to longest, that had been a fun hour.
Now though all Jaune wanted to do was fall asleep and forget about his day, so he removed his lab coat and his pumpkin pete hoodie, showing off his Glynda Goodwitch t-shirt. Kicked off his old trusty trainers and slipped out of his jeans and changed his pants. His classic ones with hearts all over them were in the wash so they would have to wait.
As he lay there in his tiny bed, in the small cold room after having caused so much trouble potentially he wondered to himself.
Why did that seem like such a hard choice?
In the moment he had known exactly what to do, but before when Merlot was talking he found himself being drawn in to the idea. More people buying things meant more funding for his beloved science, but the means were wrong… and Jaune knew right and wrong.
So he was confident he had made the right choice, he just wished he had been left with something other than just knowing.
He drifted off into a dreamless slumber, tossing and turning throughout the night.
