The Little Priest who could
The next day me and Colby realized something, we didn't take a bath the previous night. Although with no clean clothes it seemed pointless, nevertheless we went. Of corse the fact that the only baths we had available were public ones did disturb us, but we eventually overcame our discomfort. After washing I sat down at the mirror and wiped it off. Who was looking back at me was both familiar, and unknown. My hair was the same, short, dirty blonde, with the bangs curving to the right. My eyes were steel blue, however they seemed to have more color too them, which, could have been just me. What really struck me however was the fact my face was completely clear of any blemishes or scars. It was if my face was given a complete re-model. Now that I thought about about it, Colby was the same way. I stroked my face just to see it at multiple angles, however there was one circular scar almost right in-between my eyes that was still there.
"I look so different" I turned my head to see Colby doing the same thing, and smiled at our similar tendencies. "It's like I got the best plastic surgery in the world." he continued to himself. I kinda expected that, so I wasn't really surprised when I saw myself, except in near Hollywood clear style. Needless to say, our readjusting to this new world had only just begun.
In what seemed like no time, a week had passed. Using Colby's money for food and drink had actually worked out better than we imagined, I had a very varied income, and it seemed it was mostly just increasing. By the end of the week we had bought some extra pairs of clothes, basic hygiene equipment, and had saved up enough money to buy some adventuring gear. For some reason Colby didn't want any armor I would make for him, saying he'd rather buy his stuff. I didn't care that much, my friend buying lower quality stuff at other stores, instead of letting me make something custom for him, yea totally not upset.
Eventually we decided to finally take a quest, of all the quests we could take, we figured the easiest one would be the best. Turns out the easiest quest on the board right now was killing giant toads during their mating season. Apparently they gave a lot of experience for their difficulty, and there were plenty of them around. The minimum required kills to complete the quest was three, we figured we would be fine considering the kind of stuff we could do, and in my case, make.
"What took you Danny!?" Colby yelled, we had agreed to meet out in the fields on the west side of axel to start toad hunting. He had his dual magical swords, which he still hadn't told me what they were called. He was also wearing a dark grey T-shirt with light grey pants, on top of which was some basic looking padding on his shoulders and chest to protect him. Not much armor at all, thankfully My crafting expertise also went into cloth and hide based armor and clothing. That padding would protect him from arrows, and maybe a sword swing, but it would constantly need to be repaired if it took to much punishment.
His voice suddenly fell short when he saw what I was wearing. One of the benefits of my job was that I had unlimited access to the forge there, after some convincing, Borthul agreed to let me use his forge for my own projects. First I had reforged my sword to the best of my abilities, so it was now of legendary quality, i'm not sure how well it will perform, but I have my hopes up. My armor however is what I was really proud of. It was all made out of bronze, as that was all we could afford at the moment, but it still looked very impressive. I had decided to model my armor off of athenian greek armor styles to match the age bronze would have been used the most. Aside form the the lack of feathers on my head, the fact the shield I did make was a small round one, and I had shoulder and knee pads, I basically looked like a spartan.
"Whoa dude, you look ready for battle" Colby complimented "like a spartan!"
"I know right?" I concur, showing off the armor pieces a bit. "You don't look too bad yourself, but let me ask one question." Colby looked at me curiously. "Why aren't you wearing a helmet?" Colby looked at me dumbly, and I continued to look at him with scrutiny. Helmets, while they could limit one's visibility if they had a visor, were instrumental pieces of protection. It befuddled me why Colby would not wear something.
"Um... because I don't want to?" I facepalm at his answer. It was unlikely I could persuade him otherwise, so I would drop the issue for now. "So while I was waiting, I spotted two toads that seem like easy targets, they're both on the other side of this hill, we can both take them, one on one." Already it appears that Colby is living up to his class's name sake. I concur with him, and we both crest the hill in front of us.
At the top I see that there are indeed two toads, both looking at each other intently. Perhaps they were rivals? This was the mating season after all. "I'll take the one closest to us, as your the fastest, and can get to the one farthest away quicker." I tell Colby, he simply nods, and get into a battle stance, ready to activate his ability [Burst].
We had been given 2 beginning skill points to get us started with our classes when they were assigned to us. They weren't many, but enough for me to increase my skill with one handed swords, acquire an ability called [Power strike], and for Colby to get two skills called [Burst] and [Detect] Which were both very useful for what we were doing.
[Burst]as it was called doubled Colby's speed for a short period of time, like most skills it would be gradually increased as he leveled up, but for what it was now, it was pretty powerful. His [Detect] skill was pretty self explanatory, allowing him to detect any creature within a certain radius, which would increase overtime automatically with his levels. [Power Strike] gave me a fifty percent boost to my next attack, and my other skill point had gone into [One handed Swordsmanship] which did exactly what you would expect, and increases my skill with one-handed swords. This is part of what made the Arms master unique, as normal classes would often be limited to a certain weapon type once they chose it, but the Arms master had no such limitations, and had special skills to go along with nearly every type of weapon or equipment under the sun.
I was just about to sprint forward when both of the toads did something very unexpected, they jumped into one another, and started rubbing their bodies together rhythmically. I then realized they weren't rivals, they were mates. Both me and Colby stopped in our tracks at the scene before us, soon enough bubbles started to form at the bottom of both toads, signaling they were getting ready to mate. "Burst!" Colby calls and he bounds past me extremely quickly as I just run forwards to kill them as quickly as possible. Both toads immediately stop and look in our direction, and then separate.
What both me and Colby saw that day will forever haunt us. The female toad had bubbles all over the front part of her body and was quite agitated at being interrupted. While the male was also very clearly upset, and was bounding forward faster than the female. Unfortunately for me, the closest one was the male since Colby ran straight past it.
Colby had reached the female toad in no time, dodging a few tongue strikes by it, and immediately he dug both of his swords into the toad's chest, and started climbing her like she was some kind of obstacle to get over. Eventually he reached the top where he buried both swords into her head with merciless force, and the toad immediately slumped over.
By that time I had finally reached the male, but I didn't stop, instead I yelled "Power strike!" and did a side strike at his right side, aiming for his limbs, while using my shield to block his tongue. My sword seemed to be surrounded with a wind like power that swirled around it as it's force was amplified. I gave a battle cry as I ran towards him, dug my sword into his flesh, and eventually stopped just past him
I didn't even feel the contact. My blood went cold, as I thought I might have missed him and only one word went through my mind: Shit.
I look back to confirm my fears, there appeared to be no contact. However the Toad was not moving, and a little blood was starting to trickle from a near invisible line, I thought I had gotten a hit, when it happened. Suddenly the cut burst open, and blood went everywhere, including on myself. Apparently my sword was so sharp there was absolutely no resistance through the toad's flesh. The blood eventually stopped spurting, and considering how much had come out at such force, means I probably hit an artery. It the slumped over with a thud, and it was only me and Colby there now, with both of us covered in blood.
"Well, uh. That went well." Colby said with a bit of a laugh, before suddenly spitting, having gotten some blood in his mouth. I chuckled myself at that. The two corpses remained, the frogs having posed little threat to either of us, giving us some confidence of our abilities in this world. We proceeded to collect the legs as proof of completion before heading back to down, now suffering from the smell of blood.
After cleaning up all the dried blood on ourselves, and changing clothes, we headed over to the guild. It had by this point turned evening, and me and Colby were sitting at a table enjoying some ribs with some simple ale to try as our drinks for the night. My helmet was on the table next to my plate, while my shield was in the seat next to mine. I decided to ask Colby something that was on my mind. "Hey Colby," I begin, "What's the name of your swords? Are they called anything?" Colby looks at me for a second, swallows the food he was chewing, and answers.
"I believe they're called 'The blades of woe'." Colby's answer is straight forward, and the only thing I can think of is 'what a boring name'. We continue eating, and we both take a shot of the liqueur we had purchased. Its quite strong, and we both need to take a break from eating to recover from the kick of the drink. This entire time I had been thinking about several things, but one came to the forefront of my mind, and I decided to share this issue with My friend in front of me.
"Colby" I state, clear in my words that this next talk is serious. Colby's head perks up and looks at me seriously. "We need some more party members, at the very least some kind of healer, at the moment we're just damage dealers, and we won't really be able to get into drawn out battles by ourselves." Colby looks thoughtful for a moment and then nods
"I think a healer would be best for a first member, or in this case a third." Colby says, "Speaking of, I think you should be the party leader." I look at him surprised.
"Really? Why?" I ask, surprised he would suddenly spring this on me.
"Number one because you know more about this world than I do, number two is that you're just a really good leader. You gave me a battle plan, and why you think it should work. Plus, I don't really want the responsibility." I ponder this, and then smile.
"Thanks Colby, that means a lo- wait a minute." Knowing my friend has faith enough to let me be the party leader made me feel a little prideful, but the last part I hadn't quite expected. I merely sighed as I shrugged, hoping that I didn't disappoint him in the end.
After we finish our meal, I grab my gear and ask Luna at the register for a piece of paper to put on the notice board. 500 Eris for a piece of paper, now I know how the guild really made their money. I wrote down that a Scout and Arms Master class adventurers were looking for someone that could heal for our party. Unfortunately since neither one of us had taken Aqua with us, we did't start off with a powerful arch priest to heal us in our times of trouble. Then again, we probably didn't need someone super powerful, just someone good enough to heal us in combat. While a Scout wasn't really a very high ranking class, it was considered an extremely useful and versatile one, and an Arms Master was considered a very difficult, but also very rewarding class to be. Hopefully our party makeup would snatch us a good priest, or maybe even a druid. with the request put up, we left to sleep for the night.
"Hello there!" Both me and Colby are interrupted from our quest searching at the job board by a pleasant sounding female voice from behind us. When we turn around we behold a pleasant site. It was the next day, and both me and Colby had decided to look for what quest we might want to complete after we finish the giant toad quest.
The girl that was behind us had long orange hair, green eyes, a rather nice figure, and a very pretty smile. What really stood out was that she was only a little taller than half me or Colby's height. I was about 6'1, while Colby was only a little shorter than me. Her attire consisted of plain long brown robes with a very droopy looking brown wizards hat, It reminded me of that one hat from Harry Potter. She also had with her a long white staff with a gold trimming, and a gold sphere at the top.
"Are you the Scout and Arms Master that put this up yesterday?" The girl asked with the same friendly attitude as before, except this time she held up the notice I had written yesterday. "My name is Autumn, what are your names?" She seems like a nice girl, or so I hoped.
"Well my names Danny, and this is Colby, I'm the party leader and the arms master. Colby's the Scout and yes, that is the notice I put up yesterday." I say clearly, and her face beams with excitement.
"Thats great! Well I was wondering, since you needed a healer if you would let me join your party? I'm a priest, and I'm not super experienced, I promise I'll do my best!" Her face changes to one of determination, and her hands clench in fists in front of her chest, almost trying to force herself to sound more confident. Well this would certainly be convenient, as we need a healer, but at the same time, I'm worried about her apparent in-experience. Beggars can't be choosers in that regard, and besides she seemed pretty kind.
"Have you ever been in a party before?" I ask, hoping she has some experience in combat and co-operating with a party. While I talk to her, Colby seems a little entranced while looking at her. I've seen that look before. Damn man's interested already. I think to myself, sighing a bit.
"I have been in two parties before, but not for a long time." she says quite matter-of-factly. Obviously she doesn't see that might be kind of a turn off for party-leaders, but at the same time me and Colby were brand new too so I won't judge her for it.
"Ok then, what skills do you know?" This question sparks something as her smile gets larger, and her eyes seem to gleam with excitement.
"My dad taught me everything I know, and I have a lot more skills learned than most priests at my level!" I feel like she recited this or something from somewhere. "I can be a big help, really!" I put my hand up to my chin, but only for a second.
"Alright then we're going on a quest." I state, getting the attention of both Colby and Autumn,
"We are?" they both say in unison, Colby in confusion and Autumn in hopefulness.
"Yes, we're going to finish the Toad quest from yesterday. We only need one more kill to complete it, and I think it would be better to see what our new acquaintance can do first hand." Colby nods and quickly prepares to leave, while Autumn jumps in the air with a gleeful cheer. This got the attention of some of the adventurers, who gave us some strange looks, and I got a little embarrassed since she was with us.
We were now on the eastern side of town, Colby had gone ahead of us to scout for a suitable target, preferably one that was alone. We didn't need a repeat of yesterday. While me and Autumn waited on top of a hill just overlooking the scenery, she had asked a few random things about us, and we had done the same. Currently we were talking stats when Colby came up to us in a hurry. I did learn though that Autumn's intelligence is quite low, which is... unfortunate. Behind Colby there was a toad, it was chasing him, he was bringing the fight to us. Good man.
I got in my battle stance, and Autumn got behind me. Colby ran up to us and stopped next to me, so he and I were flanking both of it's sides. "I really need to build up some more stamina." Colby panted. Even for a Scout, that trek was quite taxing, and Autumn didn't waste a beat.
"Right!" she exclaimed, and immediately cast "Restore Stamina!" there was a thin green magical line that came out of the golden sphere on her staff, and connected itself with Colby's body. His body shone a light green as his stamina was slowly restored. "Oh, that feels good!" Colby complimented.
"Could you lend me a damage boost Autumn?" I asked, and Autumn followed up by casting [Increase Damage] which made a similar red magical line came out of her staff and connected itself with me. I felt my muscles flex slightly as the power flowed through my body. I began to charge the toad, he stopped however and opened u his tongue to strike at me. As it lashed out I dodged right and cut off some of his tongue with my sword. Again I felt no resistance, and it started to bleed immediately. I quickly got up to the toad and did a similar strike I did the first time, except with my shield. My shield was sharpened along it's entire round edge, making it like a perfectly circular saw blade. The same result as last time happened, except he started to bleed sooner. This was probably due to Autumn's boosts being slightly less powerful than my own [Powerstrike].
When I looked back I noticed that both mine Colby's magical lines were still attached to her staff. "Is it supposed to stay connected to both of us?" I asked curiously.
"Well you see this staff is a family heirloom, and while it lowers the power of any buffs or heals I provide, it can be applied to multiple party members at once. I look at her dumbly, and sigh. "Well better than nothing I suppose." I grumble to myself. We barely had enough party members for that trait to be worth it. I also silently wondered by how much of a percentage her spells are weakened for that to be possible.
Then I saw it, a toad, bounding towards both Colby and Autumn. Thankfully I had a chance to warn them and they both saw it, before Colby could run towards it though, Autumn began chanting something. A large magical circle appeared in front of Autumn in a light blue color as she appeared to be casting some sort of spell. "Light beam!" she exclaimed, come to find out there were a few offensive spells Priests could learn, however they were typically medium to high difficulty type of skills, and costed a lot of skill points to acquire. Unfortunately Autumn didn't seem to be very competent at it, as the magic circle suddenly blew up in her face in the form of a large black soot cloud. Once it cleared Autumn was covered in black soot, and before me or Colby could ask what happened, the toad lashed out it's tongue.
"AHHHHH" was the last thing we heard from autumn as she was dragged into the toads mouth with only her legs sticking out, and the connections between her staff and us cutting off. Colby was the first one there as he used [Burst] to get to the toad. He jumped into the air and slammed both of his slightly glowing swords into it's head. Apparently the more energy he stored in the swords the brighter they grew, and he still had some energy stored from yesterday's fight. I wondered for a moment what it would look like when he unleashed all that power, before I was reminded we were in the middle of saving our new compatriot.
When the toad slumped over both me and Colby had to drag her out of the toads mouth, the saliva sticky, and it's head rather hefty to move. Autumn had a stupefied expression on her face, but she soon returned to her feet, and had a grateful smile on her face. "Thanks guys! You really saved me there!" she beamed, however both me and Colby were quite distracted by the fact her robes were now attempting to fall off, and she was covered in slime, now from head to tow. The black magical soot from before had also merged with the toad saliva to create rather large gobs of black slime that rolled down her form. She seemed to notice the odd stares we were giving her, and she looked at her self and giggled. "I guess I got pretty messy huh?" She adjusted her clothing to where it was a little more attached to her body. We didn't see anything, but we were close to doing so.
"Are you okay Autumn?" Colby asked what was on both of our minds, but I was still a little too distracted by all the slime. We soon started to head back to town, mostly to clean up, and secondly to hand in the quest.
"Don't worry, I'm fine, just a little sticky, nothing some water won't fix." She replied happily. We were getting a lot of looks from everyone on the street, most of them weren't good ones either. We finally got to the bath houses, where after waiting for her to get cleaned up, treated her to dinner for helping us. While we were eating I though I might as well ask Autumn what that explosion was about. So I did so, to which she gave me an almost excited response.
"Oh that? Well, i'm not too good when it comes to combat spells, they tend to literally blow up in my face. I can really only do healing and buff spells well." As she explains this I find myself slightly disappointed, but not really all that upset. I'm still going to give her a chance, as her ability to heal everyone at once might actually come in real handy, even if it's not too potent.
After our dinner was finished, and we agreed that me and Colby would meet her here tomorrow morning. I went ahead and turned in the toad quest, since in total we killed four, instead of the required three, we got a little more of a reward than normal. Me and Colby said our goodbyes to Autumn, and left towards the showers. While I was in there I thought about what we could do for an actual home, we were nowhere near the needed amount to buy a house, but I knew winter would be upon us in a few months or so, at least. We needed something better than the stables. I recollected on some old memories of earth as I sat there, and wondered how everyone back home was doing. Probably still mourning, and just the thought of someone mourning over me sent an ache throughout my entire body. I didn't like to think that I had cased someone grief, much less a family member.
As me and Colby made our way to the stable I couldn't help but get the feeling that we were being watched when we were coming back from the fields, however I never saw anyone purposefully following us. I laid down on the hay bed we had been using for the past week, and we talked for a while, mostly about our new companion. Colby said she would fit sight in, however I was a little concerned that she couldn't do complicated spells without them blowing up in her face, plus we couldn't help her as neither one of us used magic like that.
However, they had been watched, by a particular blonde Crusader with appraising eyes. Perhaps they could be the ones? She thought after seeing the condition of that priest, and the two men walking beside her, she had to find out what happened, for the sake of taking her place! As a Crusader I couldn't possibly let that happen again, on my honor as an adventurer, I must investigate! She thought to herself, putting a reasonable excuse in place due to the fact she couldn't admit what she really wanted. Even if it was obvious to anyone that would have seen her.
At least...thats what she convinced herself of.
