Chapter 4 - Meeting Mr. VideoMax

It was a humid, rainy day in what was usually sunny Santa Carla. The sisters were off work and spending the day with their little brothers. Mike was off work on account of the rain. So it was board game day as they awaited Lucy to finish her shift at the video store. Their mother loved her job at VideoMax. And she spoke very highly of the very man, Max. They had yet to meet the man that made their mother smile like a dewy eyed school girl. Made her feel so beautiful and desirable. So wanted. Grandpa popped his head around the corner informing them that he was leaving to see his girlfriend, Widow Olympia Johnson and would be having supper with her, so he would be back late. In truth he was leaving mostly because of how competitive his grandchildren got when they played their current board game of monopoly. When they had been very young, on one of the very few trips they had visited as little kids, Lucinda had sat on and placed in a headlock her brother, Mike, because he bought Park Place and she did not have the matching property to go with Boardwalk. The siblings would probably not make it through the game before someone was nursing wounded pride. They were way too competitive for monopoly. Athena was the most competitive of all of them, so she refused to participate in the gameplay. Instead she busied herself with her tarot cards as the sounds of her siblings beginning to fight drifted to her ears.

"Want to read my fortune?" Lucinda asked suddenly sitting across from her twin.

"Sure." Athena answered as she shuffled the deck.

Athena had her Lucinda pick three cards and lay them face down on the table. She then set her deck to the side and moved her hands over the cards, picking the first card and turning it over. It was the Lover's Card in reverse. When Lucinda saw the lovers she could not help but roll her eyes. Athena noticed her eye roll and she, childishly, stuck her tongue out at her sister.

"You know the lovers are not just about a love fortune for romance it can have other meanings?" Athena asked her, hoping to placate her sister just long enough to finish her fortune reading.

"If you say so." Lucinda snarked.

"The Lovers card reversed may indicate that you are going along with a divided situation because you have a vested interest in the opposition. You cannot resolve this situation until you own up to your own double standard. Admit the resistance you feel, instead of proceeding halfheartedly or with unspoken resentments. In such an important area of your life, you should not just go along to get along." Athena stated to her.

She flipped the next card over; it was in the general position. It was the Queen of Queen of Wands. Lucinda looked at her sister and gave her the face of well what is it?

"The Queen of Wands in the general position. If I am correct this may be indicating that you should be getting a raise at work soon or a promotion." She said to her impatient sister.

Athena's card reading attracted the attention of their younger brothers. The two decided they were going to come over and get Athena to read their fortunes as well. But first they were going to have to wait their turn. Athena turned her sister's last card over in the advice position. It was the Card of Justice. Athena felt the second her sisters' eyes locked on to her for an explanation.

"The Justice card advises you to listen carefully as others explain to you their version of events and the parts they played. It is unnecessary to offer feedback. Your role is to observe, listen closely, give a full hearing, and keep your wits about you as the story takes shape. As you witness people's account of themselves, your understanding will go beyond the words you hear. Subtle inferences and clues will reveal the truths that will enable you to make a wise and accurate assessment," Athena stated matter-of-factly.

"And just what does all of that even mean?" Sam blurted out before Lucinda could inquire.

"What it means is that someone in Lucinda's life is going to come to her with a life altering revelation and she is going to have to put her stubbornness aside and listen full and whole heartedly to what they have to say." She stated with a scoff like it was obvious.

"Do me next!" Sam said and practically shoved Lucinda away.

Athena watched her twin move instead of reacting towards Sam. Lucinda was quiet in contemplation. Quietly she moved from the living room and up the stairs towards the sanctuary of their shared attic rooms, hers to be more specific. The rain was still pouring outside, and it made a light droning sound in the attic. Very soothing. Her sister's words whirled in her brain. Could the readings have anything to do with Dwayne and Paul? Could she really be in a relationship with two men? Was there a big secret that needed to be shared with her? What was going to happen now?

Athena came up the stairs to their shared space. She noted that Lucinda was not in the sitting area, so she went to her door. Lightly she knocked and was granted entry. Lucinda was sprawled on her stomach across her queen bed, her head shoved under her pillows.

"Lu?" Athena spoke softly.

Lucinda popped her head out from the pillows. Pulling herself up into a sitting position Athena moved to sit beside her. Both girls were quiet for several minutes just sitting there listening to the rain. Athena spoke then. Lucinda did not even have to speak her question aloud; her sister already knew what she was going to ask. That was one of the many beauties of being a twin.

"Yes, I do believe that you're reading does pertain to Dwayne and Paul. I fully believe that they are not telling you something. I believe that David and Marko have a secret they have not told me yet either. But they have not known us long enough yet to be able to trust us fully to share that secret with us. But I also have a gut feeling that it is an important secret, and it is one that we truly need to know. It will change our lives forever." Athena stated to her sister seriously.

"I do not know much about all your witchy stuff that you do, nor do I trust it. But I do trust you. You are my sister, my twin at that, I know that you would not do anything to make me mistrust you or doubt you." Lucinda whispered quietly.

They sat there quietly for a few minutes more when they hear the door open at the bottom of the stairs. Lucy's kind voice drifted up the stairs as she called her daughters down to the living room with the rest of the family. The girls made their way to the living room and sat on the couch beside their brothers. Lucy was absolutely beaming with giddiness.

"What's going on mom?" Sam asked.

"Oh, I have a date tonight with Max!" She answered, beaming brightly.

Sam and Michael went very quiet after her little announcement. Lucinda and Athena smiled at their mother. Both girls thought that she deserved a date. Deserved a nice night out with a charming man. Their mother deserved some attention from the male persuasion. She was still very beautiful for age and they just wanted her to have companionship and happiness.

"Where are you going?" Athena asked.

"The Chateau Queen." Lucy said, "It is a pretty pricey place. It is very high class. I do not know if I have anything that would be acceptable to wear."

Her daughters jumped to their feet. Going to each side of their mother they ushered her up the stairs to her room. They were going to make her look stunning for her night with Max. First impressions and all that. While they were upstairs Sam and Mike began to converse. They did not like this. They had a bad gut feeling about this Max person. They were not trying to be mean or anything but their instincts were not happy. Something just did not sit well with them.

Ocean Front Home

An unneeded alarm was ringing shrilly throughout the modest ocean front home. The occupant had it just for show incase he ever needed to have guests over. It had become habit over time since the alarm clock had been invented that he had one. He was not human anymore but that did not stop him from trying to blend in with the surrounding people. Vampirism may have made him different from humans but it never got rid of what he craved the most. A family. He had tried to create one with the boys he had changed but they did not care to have a father figure. What he had wanted most of all was a wife. Someone to love and to have as an eternal companion. And now after about 200 years he felt that he may have just found the woman for him. Sweet, beautiful, and nurturing Lucy Emerson would be his eternal companion. His blushing bride. He would have his family at last. He would have Lucy Emerson.

Hudson's Bluff

The sun was just falling down below the horizon when they whoops and hollers of rowdy bikers shattered the quiet of the cave. It was time for them to come alive as the daylight died. The first jolts of renewing moonlight zapped them full of hyperactivity. The first instincts of life made them energetic. But this time the energy was different. For the first time in years each on of them had a purpose higher than being vampires. More than just partying all night. More than the feed, the buzz of the kill. This time there was a light to their dark lives. There was finally a reason for themselves. Even though they did not want to admit it they finally knew what Max had been spouting all these years about finding a piece of themselves. Their unnatural existence finally had a meaning. There was finally a reason to their madness. Finally a reason for the need to live instead of exist. Life had a reason. Life had a name. Lucinda. Athena. They were life.
