Chapter 8: Revelations
It had been two days since the arrival of Kitty. Lucy was thrilled to see the young woman again. Lucy had always liked young Kitty as had Michael and Sam. Max had not had the opportunity to meet Kitty and that was just the way that they wanted it to be. She did have the chance to meet the Frog brothers. And they were annoying the crap out of her. They prattled on and on about the dangers of vampires when she accompanied Sam to the comic shop. Kitty loved comics. Hulk and Spiderman were her favorites for Marvel and Wonder Woman, Batman, and The Flash for DC. She was a closet nerd. The boys kept trying to thrust upon her Vampires Everywhere.
"Our numbers on the back. Call us if you need anything." Edgar said seriously.
"That's ok, boys. I can take care of myself against some vampires." she said and her eyes glowed.
Edgar and Alan were stunned. They did not know what she was. They had only ever really studied vampires. They began reevaluating their lives a bit. Just how many people did they interact with that they did not know was some kind of supernatural? What was the pretty black girl anyways? She most certainly was not a vampire; she was in the daylight. They never noticed Sam leave the money on the counter and leave with Kitty.
"I think you stunned them." Sam said with a shrug.
"I believe I did." Kitty grinned and followed Sam to the video store.
Lucy waved at them from inside the store as they walked in. She rung up waiting customers as Sam perused the new releases and Kitty meandered over to the older films. She had a love for old black and white movies. She found an old Bela Lugosi movie. He was a good Dracula in her opinion. She was wandering through to see if they had Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.
"Can I help you find anything?" a sweet voice asked with just a slight Spanish accent.
Kitty swiveled around to the voice. There standing was a young Latina. She was beautiful. Her skin a flawless caramel, her hair was curls of chocolate and caramel mix, her eyes were pools of melted chocolate, and her lips were little puffy pillows of pink. Kitty was speechless and she stared.
"Cat got your tongue?" the girl asked playfully.
"N...n..no. You just surprised me was all. I'm Katarina, call me Kitty." She introduced herself.
"I am Maria. It is so nice to meet you. You're the friend of Lucy's daughters?" Maria asked with a smile.
"Yeah. Athena is my best friend." She answered.
"What about Lucinda?" Maria asked.
"Um, we're friends. But, um, it's complicated." Kitty answered her shyly.
"Oh! You either liked the same guy and your friendship failed and now your friends again or at one time you were more than friends but broke up." Maria guessed aloud.
"Yeah, something like that." Kitty was almost pained hearing that aloud.
Maria had a thoughtful look on her face, "I hope you don't find me too forward but would you like to have dinner with me tonight?"
Kitty was stunned to say the least, "Yeah. I would love to."
"Alright. I'll meet you at the boardwalk entrance at 6, if that's alright with you?" Maria asked her.
"That's perfect. See you then." Kitty replied with a grin taking over her face.
Maria went back over to the counter to help Lucy check people out some more. She shyly looked at Kitty just standing there almost dazed. Sam gave Kitty a poke to get her going again. Kitty checked her movies out with Lucy and she and Sam left.
"Soooo." Sam started, "You're a lesbian?"
"Yeah." Kitty answered.
"You and my sister at one time?" he asked again.
"Yeah." She answered with a nod.
"So, she is a bisexual?" he asked.
"Yeah. She is." she answered.
"Well, that really sucks." he said.
Kitty gave Sammy a sideways glance. She had not been expecting that. Usually, people would give her nasty looks or start verbally abusing her for her choice of lovers.
"You'd have been a great sister-in-law." he said with all seriousness, "It would have been nice to have someone to talk to about myself."
"What do you mean Sam?" Kitty asked.
"Well, I don't like girls as more than friends. I am attracted to guys. In fact, I really like Alan." Sam confessed with a sigh, like a thousand-pound weight had lifted from his chest.
"Oh, Sammy. You can always talk to me even if I'm not with your sister. You can talk to your sisters as well. I am pretty sure your mom would be ok and even Mike." Kitty said encouragingly.
Sam did not look very hopeful, "Really?"
"Absolutely." she said and led him back to Grandpa's car.
(Athena - Ye Olde Book Shoppe)
Athena was working but she was also researching. The shop was slow that day so she had the free time after she had restocked shelves and reorganized the books. It was actually during the reorganizing of the books that she stumbled across a very old, ancient book. It did not look like it belonged with the rest of them. She at first believed that it may have been left by the Madame and was accidentally placed amongst the others. When she opened it, she discovered that it was in-fact a hand written book. Illustrated as well. It was a personal book. But the more she delved into it she discovered that it was a grimoire. It was a personal grimoire and it was very old. The first entry dated 1725.
"I see you finally found it." Madame said coming into the room, startling Athena.
A smile graced the older woman's lips. Athena realized that the grimoire was Her's. Athena closed the old book and handed it over to Madame Monique. She shook her head, her puff swaying with the movement. Her dark eyes smiling as she gave it back to Athena.
"Why are you giving this to me?" Athena wondered.
"I am tired and I am very old. I was born in 1710. I was a slave to a very prominent family in Charleston. I was taught the witchcraft by my aunt in secret. She helped me begin my grimoire. I married by age 14. Had my first child by 15. My little boy died of smallpox not even a year later. I had another child by 17. My little girl. She grew to be a very beautiful woman. I was worried about that. Even the white men had their eyes on her. My husband was to be traded to another plantation, that is how I met Max. He was a slave trader that came through the areas. It was evening when he arrived, sun just setting. My daughter held the lantern as the master went to greet Max. Max was immediately smitten by my daughter. He asked the master if he could buy her. He agreed since his sons had their eyes on her. He was invited to stay while he conducted his business in the area. My daughter shook when Max touched her. She knew what he was. All witches know. Max had not been a vampire long and had never come across witches before. Max approached her about being his mate. She refused. It enraged him. In his anger to make her obey he broke her neck. I saw it all. He took my daughter from me. I want his head. I have amassed ancestral magic but my body is too tired to harness it. I wish to give it to you, to help you defeat Max." Madame Monique said.
"Alright then." Athena said simply.
