Chapter Six: Time is Ticking
Jack walked into the Tooth Palace once again and was instantly greeted by a group of Tooth's mini fairies. They chirped happily and Jack gave them all a smile to which some of them fainted at the sight.
"Hey, little guys," said Jack. "I'm here to see Tooth. Is she around?"
At that moment, Tooth came fluttering up to him. "Oh, hello, Jack!" greeted Tooth. "What brings you back here? I'm on break right now, so I have time to tell you about how we defeated Pitch if you'd like."
"No, that's fine," said Jack. "I just came to ask you a few things."
Tooth smiled. "Sure! What would you like to know?"
Jack rubbed the back of his neck. "Well...I was sort of wondering...er...okay. Let's say that one day, you fall asleep and suddenly you wake up and nobody knows who you are. What do you do?"
Tooth blinked owlishly and cocked her head in a bird-like manner. Jack knew what he said was really desultory to her, but he didn't know what else to say. Besides, she was an expert in memories, so she probably would at least know something about everyone forgetting you overnight.
"Well...that's a really interesting question," said Tooth at last. "Um...I don't really know what I would do if everyone suddenly forgot about me."
"Do you at least know if it can be reversed?" asked Jack.
Tooth tapped her chin. "Well, I do know that there are some powerful memory erasing spells out there, although I never had it affect me before."
Jack resisted the urge to roll his eyes. It's happening to you right now, he thought.
"But it is reversible," said Tooth. Jack's eyes brightened with hope.
"How? How do you reverse it?" he asked quickly. Tooth was surprised by his sudden response.
"Oh, well...um...it depends on what type was used," said Tooth. "If everyone suddenly forgot you overnight then that is a pretty big memory wipe."
"Yes, but how would you reverse it?" asked Jack again. He was being impatient, he knew, but the winter spirit was desperate.
"First, you'd probably want to find who or what caused it," said Tooth. "Then you'd have to break the seal."
"Seal?" repeated Jack.
Tooth nodded. "The seal is what's keeping the spell going. Once you break it, everything should return back to normal. But it will take about a day for everyone to regain their memories."
Jack smiled to himself. All he had to do was find who caused this, break the seal, and then things would go back to normal. No problem!
"But you would probably want to break the seal as soon as possible," said Tooth. "Or else the memory wipe becomes permanent."
P-permanent?!
"What?!" cried Jack. Tooth and her fairies fluttered backwards in surprise at the winter teen's outburst. Jack felt a light purple blush crawl up his face.
"S-sorry," said Jack. "I-I didn't mean to burst out like that. It's just…"
Jack couldn't believe it. If he didn't find that seal soon, the memory wipe would be permanent. Which meant that the Guardians, his believers, no one would remember him. And he wouldn't be able to reverse it.
I-I'd have to start all over again, thought Jack.
"Jack? Are you okay?" asked Tooth. She placed a comforting hand on his shoulder and Jack looked up at her.
"Yeah...yeah, I'm fine," said Jack. He let out a breath and looked into Tooth's amethyst colored eyes. "How much time would one have once the spell is in action?"
Tooth counted on her fingers and did some mental math. "I'd say probably about two weeks."
Two weeks. It had already been three days, meaning that Jack had about a week to break that seal and bring back everyone's memories and revert everything back to normal. Jack nodded.
"Anyway, a memory wipe like that hasn't been used for centuries," said Tooth. "So you don't have anything to worry about!"
Jack silently sighed. He did have things to worry about. His friends, his family, everything would be gone if Jack didn't find that seal and break it. Now he had to find the person who caused all of this and find where they're keeping the seal and break it and possibly go through some sort of battle to get to it.
Great…
One of Tooth's fairies chirped and Tooth turned to her and shared a conversation with the little fairy. Tooth trilled something back and then turned to Jack.
"Sorry, Jack," said Tooth. "But I have to go. I have a Guardian meeting to attend to, but I hope we get to talk again!"
Tooth turned to a group of fairies. "Wings up ladies!"
The mini fairies followed their queen out of the Tooth Palace and Jack flew out as quickly as he could, unaware of Baby Tooth following him. He had two weeks and three days to reverse all of this. No pressure...
Oh, come on, Frost. The pressure is on! thought Jack. You better get to it!
Jack slid on his lake and was glad to see that the rain stopped. He slammed his staff on the already frozen lake and thickened it with another layer of ice. He groaned. This was going to be a lot harder than he thought it would be.
Baby Tooth chirped from behind him and Jack twirled around and faced her. He blinked in bemusement.
"Baby Tooth?" Baby Tooth cocked her head at the name and it hit Jack. She didn't remember him.
"Oh, sorry," said Jack. "It's just you have a yellow feather like Tooth does and you're small so...Baby Tooth."
Baby Tooth shrugged and trilled. She seemed to like the name and Jack smiled, knowing that at least one thing stayed the same.
"What are you doing here?" asked Jack. Baby Tooth chirped and Jack really wished that he learned the fairies language sooner.
"Uh...I don't understand. Sorry," said Jack. Baby Tooth huffed and pointed at him and then to herself and made various fighting motions with her hands.
"You...you want to help me fight?" asked Jack unsurely. Baby Tooth nodded and then shook her head.
"Oh! You want to help me!" Jack said. Wait, what?
"Help me?" asked Jack. "But why?"
Baby Tooth gestured to her head and then everywhere around her and pointed back to Jack. Jack 'had an "oh" moment. So she knew that something was wrong.
"So you remember me?" asked Jack. Baby Tooth shook her head, but pointed to him and Jack knew that it meant that she felt that Jack was telling the truth about him being a Guardian, but didn't remember anything of it.
"So you don't remember me, but you still want to restore your memories and everyone else's," said Jack. Baby Tooth nodded and perched on his shoulder and chirped determinedly.
Jack smiled. "Okay then," said Jack. "Let's do this."
