Chapter Eleven: Seeing Blue

"Left central incisor knocked out in a freak sledding accident. I wonder how that could've happened...Jack?"

Jack laughed, somewhat embarrassed. "Kids, huh?"

Tooth twirled the coin in between her fingers and placed the shiny gift under Jamie's pillow. She fluttered upward, hovering above the sleep child and a look of happiness but slight sadness crossed her face.

"This was the part I always loved...seeing the kids," she said. She wrapped her arms around herself. "Why did I stop doing this?"

Jack looked up at her. "It's a little different up close, huh?"

Tooth smiled and rested a hand on Jack's shoulder. "Thanks for being her Jack," she cocked her head slightly and a look of guilt crossed her face. "I wish I knew about your memory," she added. "I could've helped you."

"Yeah, well…" Jack stopped what he was about to say, his blue eyes staring into Tooth's amethyst ones. "Look, let's just get you taken care of and then it's Pitch's turn."

Tooth nodded and squeezed his shoulder lightly. Jack smiled back.

One Week and Two Days Remaining

Tooth placed the golden coin under the sleeping child's pillow and couldn't help but sigh. She had been seeing these strange memories all day. Half of her felt like they meant something, but her other half just wanted them gone. Tooth cradled the little cuspid in her hand and gave the little boy a soft pat on the head. The child sighed sleepily and rolled over. Tooth smiled.

The Tooth Fairy flew out the window and back to the Tooth Palace. She placed the child's tooth in its tooth box. She flew back to the heart of Punjam Hy Loo, so deep in thought that she didn't notice the Northern Lights dancing across the sky.

Baby Tooth flew up to her and chirped. Tooth nodded and then called three other fairies to accompany her on her trip to Santoff Claussen for the Guardian meeting. Tooth and her little group of fairies flew toward the North Pole. Tooth wondered what North was calling them for. They had a meeting not too long ago.

Tooth was also wondering if the other Guardians were being affected by the strange memories. They all took place during the battle with Pitch Black, but Tooth was sure that they had defeated the Boogeyman themselves without Jack. While Tooth wanted to believe that, there was one part of her that wanted answers. Why were the memories there and then, in a blink, disappeared?

While the Queen of the Tooth Fairies Armies was an expert in memories, these seemingly out of the blue ones stumped her. She did not know where they came from, or if they even actually happened. Tooth shook her head and pushed those thoughts aside as she neared North's. She flew through an open window alongside Sandy, who gave a polite wave in her direction. Tooth smiled and waved back, and then followed him into the Globe Room where North and Bunny were already waiting. They were arguing as usual.

"Really, North? Ya called us all this way because of yer bloody belly? Again?" cried Bunny as he waved a paintbrush in his direction. "Ya know, once is fine but twice? Maybe ya just have a bellyache this time."

Tooth cocked her head curiously. "What's going on?"

Bunny turned to the fairy with a deadpan expression. "What's goin' on is tha' North has a bellyache."

"It iz not bellyache!" said North. "Something iz up and I can feel it in—"

"Yer belly. Ya, we know," finished Bunny. "But really. Are ya sure that this isn't jus' a simple stomach ache?"

"Does it look like I have stomachache?" said North.

As Tooth and Sandy watched the argument lay out, both of them felt as if this happened before. A sudden memory popped into both of their heads, but they quickly shook it out. They had had enough of the strange, blue memories. Tooth fluttered up to the quarreling Russian and Pooka and laid her hands on both of their shoulders.

"Why don't we just let North explain why he called us here," said Tooth.

Bunny frowned. "Fine."

North smiled. "Thank you, Toothy." Tooth returned his smile and fluttered back to give North some room.

"Anyway, as I was saying, something does not feel right," the Russian said. "It iz strange feeling, feeling as if something iz missing."

"Is it yer mind?" asked Bunny.

Tooth elbowed him. "Bunny!"

"What?" said Bunny innocently. "Feeling things in his belly? Is nobody else concerned?"

Sandy put up an image of a question mark. "I don't even know."

"Well, North was right when Pitch happened," said Tooth. "So if he feels something, it's probably right."

Bunny crossed his arms. "I still think it's a stomachache."

North waved his hands. "Stomachache, feeling in belly, vhatever! What I'm saying iz something iz not right."

"What exactly are ya referring to?" asked Bunny.

North stroked his beard. "It iz hard to explain…"

"Then it's a stomachache."

"But, I will explain best I can."

"Darn it…"

"I was cleaning office the other day and I dropped nesting doll," said North.

"You mean the one with the doll with the big eyes inside?" asked Tooth. "You're center?"

"That iz the one," said North. "I picked it up and then I remembered something. Something that happened not too long ago. But I am not sure if it iz true or not."

Sandy put up another question mark. "What was it?"

"It was Jack," said North. "And I was explaining center to him."

Bunny snorted. "Ya mean Jack? Jack Frost?"

North shrugged. "Yes, Jack Frost."

"But that never happened," said Bunny.

"Or did it…" said Tooth. The three turned to the Fairy Queen.

"It's been happening to me too," said Tooth. "I wasn't watching where I was going and I flew into a wall back at my Palace. Then I remembered crashing into the billboard back when we were collecting teeth. But that time, Jack was there."

Sandy nodded and an image of him flying through the streets of Burgess, and then a thought bubble appeared over the mini Sandman's head with him flying through Burgess with Jack by his side, chasing a nightmare.

"Sandy, you've had it happen to you too?" asked Tooth. The Sandman nodded.

"Bunny, what about you?" asked North.

Bunny blinked, then he sighed and said, "Okay, fine. It happened ta me too."

"What did you remember?" asked Tooth.

"Well, remember when Sophie broke into my Warren and how you took her back home?" said Bunny. Tooth nodded. "Well, shelia, you didn't take her home in my memory."

Tooth blinked. "I didn't?"

"Nope," said Bunny. "Jack did. He apologized for callin' me a kangaroo and offered ta take the ankle-biter home. He said he'd be 'as quick as a bunny.'"

The Guardians were confused. They were all having memories of the winter spirit, but didn't know why. They all knew that they defeated Pitch, but for some reason in their memories of the battle, Jack was there.

"So...is Frost invading our memories?" asked Bunny.

"Or maybe...something invaded ours," said Tooth. "I think something must have happened to our memories, but I'm not sure yet."

"Ya focus on figuring that out," said Bunny. "I got eggs ta paint."

"Okay, then," said North. "If anything strange happens, meet back here."

The Guardians nodded and parted ways. Tooth had a feeling that she was close to figuring out what happened to their memories. Maybe Jack's question from earlier wasn't so random after all.
