Nate was walking down the path towards Floccesy Town, which was a short walk since the path was only a 20 minute walk. Although it took longer than that since he was practicing on patrats and purrloins, not really concerned with catching them. As he strolled across a cliff face, he heard a voice.
"You there trainer!" Said trainer looked up to see...Alder the former champion! "My name is Alder!"
"I knew that already!" Nate replied. "You've been living next door to my town for a long while!"
"Oh. Well uh, at least you can bask in the glory of seeing me in person the first time!" He yelled confidently undeterred as he jumped from the cliff and landed on his feet. Though his legs gave out and thus also landed on his butt and back. "Augh! Why does that never work?!" Alder cried out in pain.
"Maybe because people just aren't able to handle jumping off a cliff onto a hard ground?" Nate answered with a slightly concerned, but mostly confused face and tone. The former champion slowly got up with a few cricks from his joints, groaning.
"Please, when it comes to humans, there's no such thing as can't. If you put a limit on yourself, you'll never be able to reach your goals and dreams."
"While inspiring and thoughtful as that is, no amount of thinking like that will allow me to fly without a plane or bird or reach the bottom of the sea without a submarine." The young teenager pointed out.
"Well...my point still stands." Alder responded defensively. "Well...whatever! I have a goal to tell people about how wonderful it is to walk towards the future together with Pokémon. So, who might you be son?"
"Nate Wayland. I just started my journey from Aspertia City."
"Aha! How about showing me your Pokémon then? I'll see if you have what it takes!" The older man requested. Seeing it would be rude to deny a former champion, Nate shown him Hydro.
"Osha?" The little Sea Otter questioned, looking up at the man. He smiled.
"Aha! Your Oshawott is a fine looking Pokémon! But as you said, you just started. I'll train you a little! Follow me!" Returning Oshawott and following Alder, they went to Floccesy Town, where he started explaining something. "Your Pokémon are always doing the best for you, the trainer, so you must always be kind to them!"
"Well, I'm definitely nice so don't worry about that." Nate shrugged.
"Great! My house is just a little bit further! Although, I do have to ask, why are you carrying two town maps?"
"It's for my friend Hugh. You may have met him, since last I saw him shortly he said he'd be training with his tepig."
"Oh, yes I've seen him! He went on past to go to Route 20! I can wait, go give him the map first. I'll remain here." Alder said as he went to his house.
"Okay then." Nate accepted as he continued on to Route 20. After battling through several trainers, he found himself at the Floccesy Ranch. Less than 10 seconds walking into the ranch, Hugh came within eyesight and approached him.
"So, you came here to toughen up?"
"Well, Hydro needs a rest. He's battled a few Pokémon without a potion and I don't have one-" He was cut off by Hugh sighing sounding annoyed.
"Ugh, alright. It's no fun beating you if you're not in top shape."
"Plus Hydro now knows Water Gun so he'd soak Pyro." Nate chuckled. Hugh crossed his arms while blowing hair out of his face.
"Hmph, just because he knows a super effective move doesn't make him better. Pyro could handle a shot and still beat your Pokémon down."
"Right." Nate replied with an eye roll and a smile. "By the way, Amy wanted me to give you this." He handed his best friend the extra town map.
"Tch, she didn't have to do that..." He said while being prideful, but a few seconds later he took it anyway. "Thank you. We just left and you've already helped me out." Just then a married couple with a herdier came around from outside the ranch.
"What's this we heard? A couple of trainers?" The husband asked.
"Yeah. Who are you two?"
"We're George and Mary Nelson, the owners of this here ranch."
"Does your Pokémon need healing?" Mary asked them.
"Yes please." Both boys answered.
"Here, I'll heal them up." After they let out their Pokémon for Mary to heal them, George asked them something.
"By the way, you two didn't happen to find a missing herdier, did you? I can't figure out where he went. Our two herdier have always been together and it's the first time one has wandered off so I'm a little worried."
"A little worried?" Hugh questioned before ascending into a rage. "Are you FREAKING kidding me?! Your Pokémon might be lost forever as far as you know! Whatever, I'll look for it! Nate, help out! Come on Pyro!" The little tepig followed Hugh as he ran off. Everyone around was spooked by what just happened.
"Why did he get so mad? He's probably just playing around."
"Here's your Oshawott back." Mary lead the water starter to him. "Here, some potions in case you need them." Nate accepted her gifts.
"Thank you. I'll be back." Nate and Hydro then set out as they headed beyond the back of the ranch, going into the forest. Given how big the forest is in the Southwestern part of Unova, the search was long and hard. To save time and health, Nate and Hydro avoided encounters with wild Pokémon when they could, and ran away when they couldn't. For hours they have searched, now having reached 6:30 in the afternoon where sunset was approaching. Nate and Hugh were panting from the long effort of searching.
"Where the hell is that dang dog?!" Hugh complained. "Pokemon just don't wander off like this. It might be in trouble as a worst case scenario."
"No kidding. I hope he's okay." Nate agreed. They then heard a yelp from what sounded like a dog.
"Did you hear that just now? It came from that direction. I'll head East, you go South." The black haired trainer ordered. Both nodded as they went off in their own directions. As they ran, Oshawott's ears perked, and ran off into a different direction.
"Hydro?"
"Osha! Oshawott!" He cried out, wanting to be followed. Following his starter, he soon found the missing herdier, but also a black clothed paramilitary styled person. And he was kicking the dog!
"Yarp" He howled.
"Hey, stop kicking him!" Nate yelled at the person.
"Tsk, you little pest." He said through a mask covering his mouth and lower face. "I'm part of a group that strikes fear into the hearts of those who stand before it: Team Plasma!" This shocked the trainer.
"Team Plasma? But you disbanded."
"That was the old Plasma led by our traitorous king. Now we follow a new one, and we're done playing nice. Especially me. I get lost chasing this herdier, and now some nosy teenager caught me! I'll vent my frustrations on you!" But before he could do anything, embers flew from behind and struck the bad guy's butt, inflicting hot pain as he screamed and jumped, patting at his butt rapidly. "OW! What?!"
"You Team Plasma scum! Feel my Brooklyn rage!" Hugh screamed at the grunt as he ran away, forcing Hugh to chase him. Shrugging, Nate went over and stooped down towards the beaten and tired Pokémon
"Don't worry, I have a potion for you right here." After healing the Loyal Dog Pokémon, he was good as new, now happy as he wagged his tail. Nate smiled. "Let's get you home." Escorting the herdier back, the couple was extremely happy that their lost pet was found and reunited with it's kin. Hugh also came back, having lost the grunt. It was now currently night time since they were so deep in the forest.
"Oh Herdier, we're so glad you're back!" George cheered.
"What made you go all the way back there?" Mary asked. "Thank you both so much for finding him and bringing him back."
"Hmph, he might've been lost forever. Take better care of him next time." Hugh told them off before leaving.
"Did something happen to him?" George inquired curiously. "It's like he hates Pokémon getting lost or something."
"He has, but it's not my place to say his story without his permission." Nate replied.
"Okay. Well, if you need anything, whether it's a bed for the night or even the Pokémon off the land near here, you can."
"Sure, thanks. I'll be back." The trainer said as he dashed off to catch up with Hugh. "Hey, Hugh!"
"What is it?" He asked annoyed.
"They're offering us a bed for the night and Pokémon to catch. I think we should take it.
"And sleep under the same roof with an irresponsible couple? No thanks, I'll sleep outside. But I will catch their Pokémon since they're offering."
"Hugh, you know I'm going to be there for you if you get too angry or whatever. But don't direct your anger of what happened onto people that were innocent."
"It's the way they were acting. It was ticking me off."
"Alright, fine. Just don't blow your top or anything."
"Hmph." Hugh responded as he walked back towards the ranch to sleep on the hay. Nate sighed as he walked with him.
A/N: Alright, so this wasn't a long chapter, but I think doing the gym battle in the next chapter will be easier with a chapter made cut then trying to come up with one. And for those of you that are thinking, yes, I know Unova is a stand in for lower New York and New Jersey, so Brooklyn doesn't exist. But dang it I wanted to use that as a running gag for the sake of making his rage related catchphrases better, funnier and this could've been a catchphrase on the yu-gi-oh abridged series on YouTube but they didn't so it's up for grabs. What did you think?
