It had now been six months since her stroke and Regina could get around with a cane. She had some nerve damage from the crash and some of her functions wouldn't be returning. She was also beginning to show.
"Emma!"
The young woman rushed from the kitchen to where the voice was coming from. She found Regina leaning against a wall in the hallway. "Hey, are you alright?"
"I need help," she said.
Emma placed an arm around her girlfriend's waist and Regina placed her arm around Emma's shoulders. She sighed with relief once she was seated on the couch. "What happened?"
"I just became too tired to go further. I think this pregnancy is draining the little energy I have."
"Maybe you should use your wheelchair?"
"I might not have a choice."
Emma could tell there was something else, "what's wrong? You look depressed."
"I'm showing," she said softly.
"You look beautiful."
"That's not why it's depressing me. Up until now, I had no visual reminder of my rape. Now I can see the baby growing and I'm starting to second guess myself. I don't know if I can do this."
"Whatever you decide, I'm here for you. You don't have to go through this alone."
"We should probably tell your parents and Henry."
"Why don't we when they bring him home tonight?"
"Yeah, I'd love to get this over with." Emma knew that her wife wanted the baby, but she also knew how much this was hurting Regina. Emotionally and psychologically, Regina was having a difficult time. That's why Emma started having Henry spend more time with his grandparents. She'd help Regina while he was gone. Regina was even seeing Archie. Now, her family would know and that would make things more real than she'd like.
That night when Snow and David came over for dinner, Regina and Emma had decided to tell them about the baby. Emma's parents walked in and hugged Regina before sitting near her in the living room. Emma retrieved Henry and once he was there, Emma took a seat by Regina.
"Regina has something to tell you and we'd appreciate it if you let her finish before reacting," Emma said before turning to her girlfriend.
Regina took a deep, shaky breath before speaking, "well, a month after...after I had been raped, I began to feel ill. I was nauseous and weaker than normal." Regina took another breath before continuing. "It turns out that my rapist impregnated me. I'm about four months along." She looked at everyone, "I'm done now."
"Are you alright?" Snow asked.
"I don't know," Regina admitted honestly, "I'm worried about how my feelings about him will affect me with the baby. I don't know if it's right for me to keep the baby."
"You're a great mother," Snow said, "I don't think you will have a problem."
"We're here for you no matter what," David said.
"Although, it would be nice if you made an honest woman out of our daughter," Snow added.
"Mom," Emma whined.
"I hope the two of you will think of this baby as your grandchild," Regina told the royal couple.
Both Snow and David smiled and that told Regina everything. Henry had been quiet until now, "are you able to be pregnant right now?"
"The doctor said there's a chance that I will miscarry. All I have to do is take it easy. Emma and I decided today that I'm going to start using my wheelchair more."
"That's a good idea," Henry said.
Regina smiled, "I figured you would be okay with that."
Snow and David cleaned up after dinner while Emma took care of Regina. "Do you think we should offer to stay here for a while to help out?" Snow asked her husband.
Before David could answer, Emma walked in, "you two don't have to stay here, but I appreciate the thought."
"The offer stands," Snow said.
"Why don't you take some time off or cut back for a while?" David suggested.
"That would be great, actually. Maybe tomorrow we can come up with a plan."
"Sounds good," David smiled.
Snow and David hugged their daughter and grandson before hugging Regina. The woman was a bit surprised because David had never hugged her before. After the couple left, Emma and Henry kept Regina company until it was time for bed.
Emma walked into the living room after her meeting with David. "Hey," Regina smiled and Emma kissed her. "How did things go?"
"Great," Emma said, "my dad basically mapped things out last night."
"So, what's the plan?"
"I'm going to just be on call for the time being. My dad will call me if I'm needed, but Hook is stepping in for me."
"Are you okay with that?"
"I am because I want to be here with you. I know that you are capable and all, but right now I just feel better being here."
"Honestly, me too."
"Everything will be alright." Emma hugged her girlfriend. The two women had been through a lot during their lives. Emma was determined to take care of Regina and help her in any and every way possible. Regina had no idea how much Emma wanted to always be with her, but she would that night.
Emma walked into the living room that evening, "dinner's almost ready. I thought we could eat outside."
"That sounds nice," Regina said.
Emma helped the woman into her wheelchair, "do you need me to help you get there?"
"Could you just wheel me to the back door since it's in the kitchen?"
"Sure," Emma said with a smile her girlfriend couldn't see. As the two reached the back door, Regina noticed the lights that were strung up in the backyard. There were flowers and apples put together to form a centerpiece on the table under the apple tree. Dinner was already out there. "Would you like to sit in a regular chair?"
"What's all this?" Regina asked softly.
"A little something to show you how much you are loved."
Regina was too emotional to speak. Emma kept the woman in her wheelchair since she hadn't said otherwise. The two ate dinner and Regina marveled over the romantic atmosphere. "I can't believe you did all of this."
"You've had a rough year and I decided this was long overdue."
"Did you cook this? Be honest."
"I did, but my mom taught me. She also supervised me."
"It's wonderful and it's nice that you are having some quality time with your mother." After the couple finished eating, Emma handed Regina an apple. "What's this for? You couldn't manage dessert?"
Emma laughed, "oh, I've got dessert. No, just pull up on the stem."
Regina was confused but did as she was told. The core of the apple was pulled out and in the middle of the core was a beautiful engagement ring. Regina gasped, "oh, Emma."
"I know that we got off to a pretty bad start. What with trying to kill each other and all. Somehow, somewhere along the way, I fell in love with you. The day of your accident, when Henry and I found you, I was so afraid that we'd never have this chance. After the rape, I was so sure that we would never be able to be together again. You proved me wrong and showed me just how strong you really are. So, what do ya say?"
Regina chuckled, "how romantic."
"I'm just teasing," Emma smiled, "will you marry me?"
"I have to ask you something."
"Shoot," Emma said.
"Do you realize what you are signing up for?"
"I want to be with you forever and nothing is going to stop me. I haven't left yet, have I?"
"No, you haven't." Regina paused to collect herself for a moment. "Yes," she smiled, "I will marry you."
Emma took Regina's face in her hands and kissed her. She then slipped the ring on the woman's finger. "How would you feel about me taking your last name?"
"Are you sure?"
"Mine's the only one that's different. You and Henry have the last name Mills, and the baby will too."
"It's your decision, but I would love that. I guess now I had better get you a ring."
"Don't worry about it. There's no rush. Oh, my parents are keeping Henry overnight. Tomorrow when they drop him off we can tell them."
"Emma," Regina looked nervous.
"Hey, is something wrong?"
"No, but I would like you to do something."
"What?"
"Make love to me."
The couple hadn't been together sexually since Regina's stroke. "Are you sure?"
"Absolutely," Regina said with a great deal of confidence. Emma stood and unlocked her fiance's chair before wheeling her into the house. She let Regina set the pace. The woman was pregnant and still recovering from a stroke and rape.
