A month after the fight with Rothbart, Regina began to feel ill. She woke up during the night with an upset stomach but felt weak. She nudged her wife who turned to face her. "Hey, what's up?"
"I don't feel well," Regina said.
Emma sat up and turned the light on, "what's wrong?"
"I think I'm going to be sick, but I need help."
Emma could tell her wife was weak. She helped the woman to the bathroom and held her hair for her before returning to bed. "What can I do?"
"Get me a pregnancy test."
"What?"
"I can't explain it and I don't know how it could have happened, but I think that's what's going on."
"I think we still have some in the bathroom," Emma left to check and came out with a box. "Did you want to do this now?"
"Might as well," Regina held her hand out for Emma to help her. The woman took three tests and returned to bed while awaiting the results. "It has to be Rothbart," she said.
"Did he touch you again?"
"No, but he hit me with quite a bit of magic. He could have done it that way."
"I'm glad Odette destroyed him."
"I can't do this."
"Do what?"
"Have another baby. I already embarrass the kids and now I'm going to need my wheelchair most of the time. Plus, there will be another kid for me to embarrass."
"Honey, everything will be fine. I'll talk to the girls," Emma looked at her watch and got up to retrieve the tests. She brought them to her wife but the look on Emma's face told Regina everything she needed to know. She was pregnant.
The next day was a Saturday which meant no school. Emma had made breakfast and the girls were downstairs eating. "Girls, I need to talk to you about something important."
"Shoot, mama," Faline said with a smile.
"I know that you have both had difficulty with mommy's disability. I'm really happy that things appear to be better." Emma paused to collect her thoughts, "here's the thing. When mommy was pregnant with Odette, she was very weak and had to use her wheelchair most of the time. By the end, she had to be in bed all the time. I'm telling you this because your mommy is going to have another baby."
"Really?" both girls had big smiles on their faces.
"Yes, but she's upset because she doesn't want to embarrass you more."
"Is mommy awake?" Odette asked.
"I'm not sure."
"Can I check on her?"
Regina walked into the kitchen at that moment. Both girls ran to hug their mother who nearly fell from the impact. Emma rushed to help steady her wife. "Easy, kiddos," she said. Emma helped Regina to the table. The kids returned to their seats as well.
"Mommy, we're so excited about the baby," Odette said.
Regina looked at Emma, "what did you say?"
"She told us everything," Odette explained. "It's okay if you need more help. I know I made you sad but it's all okay. I'm happy you're my mommy." Odette stood and went over to hug her mom. Regina felt tears begin to well in her eyes.
Regina was trying to use her wheelchair as little as possible. She was in the kitchen making breakfast for her family one morning. It took a bit longer because she had to move slowly and carefully. Odette walked in with her long, dark hair all wavy and looking sleepy.
"Is it time for breakfast?" she asked.
Regina turned to find her daughter. She smiled at the adorable sight, "not yet. Why don't you go back to bed and sleep a bit more?"
"That's okay," Odette climbed up on a barstool and watched her mother. The little girl could tell that something was wrong with the woman. "Mommy, are you okay?"
"I'm fine, why?"
"Just asking," Odette said.
Regina tried to turn to walk towards the pantry but had to stop and brace herself on the counter. She put her head down and took deep breaths. The hand holding her cane was shaking and she was leaning on it heavily. "Odette, can you get mama, please?"
The little girl got off the stool and ran to her parent's room. It wasn't long before she and Emma came running into the kitchen. Emma took her wife into her arms. "Hey, what's wrong?"
"I'm so tired," she said shakily.
"Do you think you can make it to the table?" her wife just nodded and Emma helped her to a chair. "I'm going to get your wheelchair."
Regina grabbed her wife's arm, "no," she said softly.
"You need it," Emma said, "if you fall then something could happen to you and the baby."
"But the girls..."
"Mommy," Odette walked around to face Regina, "please use the chair, mommy. I don't want you or my brother to get hurt."
"What about embarrassing you?"
"I don't care. I just want you to be safe."
"Okay," Regina said and signaled for her daughter to hug her. Emma brought the chair out but left Regina in the one at the table. The blonde decided to finish breakfast. "Try not to burn it."
"I can handle this."
"Can you?"
Emma turned around holding a spatula and waving it at Regina, "all I have to do is flip the pancakes. It doesn't take a genius to do that, your majesty."
"Yes, dear," Regina said.
Odette laughed at her moms and that little laugh made both women smile brightly. Suddenly, the little girl vanished in a puff of smoke. "What the hell?" Emma yelled.
"Help me," Regina said. Emma got her wife into the wheelchair, "you check upstairs and I'll check down here. Call your parents."
Emma ran upstairs while Regina wheeled herself around the first floor. Odette ended up being in her bedroom when Emma walked in. "Hey, you scared us."
"Sorry," she said as she shrugged and shook her head, "I don't know what happened."
"Let's go find mommy. She'll probably know."
Emma and Odette walked downstairs and found Regina wheeling herself out of the living room. "Thank God," she said once she saw Odette.
"What happened?" the little girl asked.
"Let's go to the kitchen and talk." Regina tried to wheel herself but her wife took over. Once they were at the table, Regina began to explain. "It would appear that you have magic. You used it to defeat Rothbart and that's how you ended up teleporting."
"How do I have magic?"
"Because I do and your father does."
"Rothbart?"
"How did you know?"
"I heard him talking to you at the lake. Swans apparently have awesome hearing. I'm sorry he hurt you, mommy. I looked up what rape is and I'm really sad that happened to you."
"I wish you hadn't looked it up. You don't have to be sorry. If that hadn't happened then I wouldn't have you. My family makes getting up in the morning worth it. Now, I'm going to have to teach you how to control your magic."
"Should we keep her home from school for now?" Emma asked.
"That might not be a bad idea. Your mom could home school her and I can work with her on her magic."
"What do you say, princess?"
"Sure," she shrugged.
