The next day, Snow and David went over to the mansion, "you don't have any idea what she meant?" David asked.
"No," Emma answered. The boys came downstairs, "hey, is your mom up?"
"I don't think so," Remy said.
"We didn't think to look," Oliver added.
"I thought she was already down here," Henry explained.
"I need to get you boys ready and off to school. I'll check on your mom after."
"We can get them ready," Snow said.
"That would be great, actually. I'll look for places to take Regina. Maybe I can convince her to go away for a little while."
Snow and David returned to the house after dropping the boys off. Emma went upstairs to check on Regina. She yelled for her parents who ran up to the room. Regina was ghostly white and Emma couldn't get her to wake up. "I'll call the paramedics," David said.
Emma threw back the blankets and nearly collapsed from the sight. Regina's lower body and the sheets were covered in blood. Emma began shaking the woman to try and wake her, but it wasn't working. The sheriff noticed something else. In between Regina's legs was their lifeless baby girl.
Whale actually acted professionally when Regina arrived. Unfortunately, they couldn't save the baby, but Regina was on the mend. It would just be touch and go for a while. "How am I going to tell her?" Emma asked her parents.
"I don't think anyone knows the answer to that," Snow said.
"I'll have to tell the boys when they get home."
"We can do that," David said.
"Let's see where Regina is when they get out and go from there."
Regina was still sedated when the boys got out of school. Emma left to pick them up while Snow and David stayed at the hospital. She took the boys home and sat them down in the living room. They were on the couch and she sat on the coffee table in front of them. "Mom's gonna kill you for sitting there," Remy said.
"Listen, I have to tell you guys something and it's not easy," Emma said.
"Wait, where's mom?" Oliver asked.
"She's in the hospital. After you went to school, I went upstairs to check on her. She wouldn't wake up and was bleeding from...well..."
"What happened?" Henry asked.
"Somehow, your mother gave birth or it was a miscarriage. I don't think she woke up for whatever happened."
"The baby died?" Oliver asked.
"Yeah, kid, she died."
"How's mom?" Remy asked.
"She's still sedated. They are replenishing her blood, but I think they're almost finished."
"She doesn't know yet?" Henry asked.
"She hasn't been awake. I'm going to take you guys to the hospital with me and you're going home with your grandparents tonight." When Emma returned to the hospital, the boys asked if they could go to the house with their grandparents. Emma said not tonight. Snow and David told her they'd make sure the boys didn't see the bedroom. The sheriff reluctantly agreed. The boys left with their grandparents and Emma went to Regina's room.
Snow had called Ruby and asked her to come over with dinner. Granny joined them as well. The dwarves and Blue were also called. "We have to tell you all something difficult," Snow said.
"Regina and Emma's baby has died," David finished.
"How?" Ruby asked.
"Follow me," Snow said. She made sure the boys were out of sight before letting everyone in the master bedroom. They had covered the bed back up in case the boys walked in. Snow locked the door and pulled the comforter down. Everyone gasped at the sight.
"What the hell happened?" Granny asked.
"We're not quite sure," David answered.
"It happened after Emma got up this morning or was happening. Regina hasn't been conscious since last night. Emma sent us a message that they're going to start bringing her out of the sedation. Last night, Emma brought up something to Regina that David and I had suggested. We thought they should go away somewhere that was near a hospital until things calmed down. Regina said they didn't have to and it would all be over soon enough. She fell asleep before answering Emma."
"What can we do?" Blue asked.
"Could you maybe clean up the bed?" Snow asked.
"Of course," Blue waved her wand and the blood was gone.
"We'd also appreciate it if everyone took it easy on Regina for a while," David added.
"We don't know how this will affect her," Snow said, "but we need to be compassionate. Please do this for us."
"Anything for you, sister," Leroy said.
Snow and David thanked everyone before showing them out. As they walked out of the house, Blue, Granny, and Ruby stopped. "That reminds me of..." Blue began.
"I know," Ruby finished.
"That was much worse," Granny said.
"What are you three talking about?" Leroy asked.
"This isn't the first miscarriage Regina has suffered," Granny said.
"She's had a lot," Ruby added.
"She's needed surgery before, but it was never this bad," Blue said.
"Well, she's one of us now," Leroy said, "and we protect our own."
Emma sat by Regina's bedside and held her hand. The mayor began to wake up and Emma was dreading what came next. Regina opened her eyes and saw Emma, "hey," she said in a raspy voice.
"How do you feel?" Emma asked.
"Awful," she answered.
"Honey, listen, I need to tell you something."
"The baby's gone, isn't she?"
"Yeah," Emma whispered, "how'd you know?"
"I had a bad feeling about this pregnancy from the beginning. I kept having nightmares about how it ended. Only I never survived either."
"Did you ever feel any pain?"
Regina thought for a moment, "no," she said in shock, "why didn't I?"
"Not everyone does."
"Where are the boys?"
"At home with my parents. Blue cleaned up the bed and Red took them food. I guess Red, Granny, and the dwarves were shown the bed. My parents wanted them to see how bad it was so they'd give you a break for a while. It really affected all of them."
"It was that bad?"
"It looked like someone had brutally murdered you."
"I'm sorry you had to see that."
"I saw her."
Regina's eyes widened, "you did?"
"She was very tiny and not very developed, but I could tell she would have been beautiful. She was beautiful. Whale said she didn't suffer and was gone before she left your body."
"Whale?"
"Yeah, he really got in the zone when he saw how bloodied you were."
"I guess Remy was meant to be my only one."
"If so then that's okay."
Regina's eyes began to water, "yeah, but it still hurts."
"I know," Emma kissed Regina's hand. "Look, if after you recover you decide to try again then I will support you."
"But you don't want me to."
"I don't want to lose you."
