Emma and Henry stayed with Regina the entire time she was at the hospital having tests run. They never let her out of their sight. The three were now sitting in Whale's office.
"If you're tired we can just go home," Henry said.
"Maybe we can take food home?" Regina suggested.
"Mom, is that okay?"
"Sure," Emma said.
Whale walked in and sat behind his desk, "well, I found a couple of things. Both I believe happened in," Whale paused when Emma shook her head, "the last year. One, your left hip is fractured. I can't tell how long it's been like that, but it's not healing. You'll probably need some screws in it or a replacement. The other thing is I found on your brain scan evidence of trauma including a stroke."
"What?"
"Maybe that's why you don't remember what happened?" Henry suggested.
"I'll give you the test results and some information on your options. Let me know what you decide. There's another doctor here who could do your hip surgery far better than I could." Whale gave Regina her test results, information, and the card of the other doctor before the three left.
After they finished eating, Henry went to hang out with David while Snow and Emma tried to help Regina. "It had to have happened in the Enchanted Forest," Snow said, "that would explain why you weren't treated."
"I'm just overwhelmed right now," Regina said.
"You need to be extra careful right now because you don't want that fracture to get worse," Emma commented.
"I can't have surgery until this curse is broken."
"Can't or won't?" Emma asked.
"A little of both."
"Are you two back together?" Snow asked with a smile.
"You were together?" the three women turned to see David and Henry standing in the doorway. "Is that why you decided not to marry Walsh?"
"Henry, I've mainly dated men. Regina is the only woman I've ever dated. Right now is not a good time to start or restart something."
"Why not?"
Regina chuckled remembering her conversation with Emma after being saved by the blonde. "Henry, your mom really is busy and she wants to make sure that whatever happens with us or doesn't happen, that you're okay with it."
"I'm fine and I like it here."
"Well we all love having you here," Regina smiled. Her son may not remember who she really is, but he was there and for now, Regina would take it.
Neal was killed by the Wicked Witch. The one everyone realized took a year of their memories. The one Regina discovered was her half-sister through Cora. Zelena had challenged Regina to a fight, but Emma begged the mayor to resist. Unfortunately, Regina had never been able to resist a challenge. Zelena threw her sister into a car several feet away. Regina just got back up, but Zelena fought harder. She choked her sister before throwing her into the clock tower. Zelena left after realizing that her sister hid her heart. David, Snow, and Emma rushed to Regina. David helped the woman up. She hissed in pain as she stood. "You alright?" Emma asked.
"Just a bit sore. David, could you help me down the stairs?"
David knew the woman must need help if she's asking him, "sure." He held onto Regina as they descended the stairs. Regina lost her balance on the last step, but David caught her.
Emma took over for her father, "maybe we should stop at the hospital," she suggested.
"I just want to go to bed, dear."
"Okay, but you really should have brought your cane."
"How was I supposed to fight with it?"
"Carefully," Emma said and Regina smiled. She helped Regina home and into bed. The mayor would most certainly sleep most of the next day.
A few days after the fight in town, Zelena had Hook take Henry. Emma, Regina, David, and Snow went to search for the boy. They found him surrounded by flying monkeys and they all worked to destroy them. Emma had Henry touched the book and suddenly all of his memories came flooding back. He looked at Regina, "mom," the boy smiled and ran to hug her. Emma was going to tell him to be careful, but Regina stopped her. Emma went to break the curse, but Zelena took Henry. Regina handed her cane to Snow and went to fight her sister. Zelena threw Regina across the room and the woman fell on her bad hip, hitting her head, and losing consciousness. Henry desperately tried to wake his mother up. It took a few moments and everyone thought that the woman wouldn't wake up.
"Henry," she groaned as her eyes flickered open.
"Mom," he smiled.
"Here, kid, let us help your mom," Emma said. She and David helped Regina to her feet. "You're really pushing it."
"I know, but I can't stop now."
"You need to."
"David, Hook, let's go," Regina said.
"Don't worry," David told his daughter, "I'll protect her." David took Regina's arm and Hook followed them to the truck.
"Take Henry with you," Emma said to Snow and ran after the trio.
David watched as Zelena lifted Regina into the air, choking her. He had promised Emma that Regina would be protected. Regina defeated Zelena with her newfound light magic before falling to the ground. She had taken a beating over the past week and was pretty sure her hip was beyond repair. David set the basket with the baby down before helping Regina up. The woman was in a great deal of pain. Emma ran to Regina, "honey, are you alright?"
"No, I'm not." Hook offered to take the baby to the car so David could carry Regina. "I need to go to the hospital," she whispered.
"Emma, call your mother and let her know."
Emma made the phone call and held onto Regina on the ride to the hospital. David carried Regina inside and Emma filled out some paperwork while she waited for Snow and Henry. After a while, Whale came to take Emma to Regina. She walked into Regina's hospital room and saw her sitting in bed, "how are you feeling?"
"Tired and sore."
"Sore?"
"Fine, I'm in unbearable pain."
"Well, your surgery is tomorrow."
"Then I have a new kind of pain."
"You better not mean me," Emma teased.
"We'll see," Regina responded.
"David and Hook are going to your house to set things up for after your surgery."
"What things?"
"Just temporarily installing railings in the downstairs bathroom and turning one of the downstairs rooms into a bedroom."
"How's the baby and your mom?"
"They're doing great. Still no name."
"I might fall asleep."
"That's okay," Emma said, "you need the rest."
The next day, Regina had her hip replaced. Four days later she was discharged and placed in Emma's care. David and Hook made sure that the house was ready for Regina's return.
Her first night back home, Regina was sitting in bed while Emma was getting ready to turn in for the night. "I remember what happened when I had my stroke," Regina said as Emma began to leave their bathroom. "I remembered it after the curse was broken but there was a lot going on."
"What happened? I mean, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
"I need to but you have to promise to not go crazy."
"I promise," Emma said.
"One night I was alone in my room at the castle. I heard someone enter and turned to find Whale there. He was drunk and angry. I tried to calm him down, but it didn't work. He beat me that night and that's how I got the brain injury that caused my stroke."
"Is that how your hip broke?"
"Yes," Regina answered.
"I could kill the son of a bitch." She saw the look of worry on Regina's face. "Don't worry," she said, "I promised you I wouldn't and I won't."
"Thank you," Regina whispered.
"Can I make him suffer a little," Emma asked in a childlike manner.
Regina chuckled, "no, dear, you have to be a mature adult."
"Since when?"
"Since I had my hip replaced and now need an adult to take care of me."
"Killjoy," Emma pouted.
"I love you too, dear."
Regina kissed Emma and went to lie down. She winced in pain and Emma helped her before giving her a pain pill. Things had been so bad for so long, but they were about to get a little better.
