One morning, a few days after the wedding, Emma was having breakfast in the dining room with her mother while Regina slept a bit longer. She didn't wake up as early these days due to the exhaustion of her recovery.
"You still haven't told her?" Snow asked in shock.
"Well, I haven't figured out how to do that, exactly."
"You just say, 'hey, Regina, I'm pregnant.'"
Emma rolled her eyes. "Yeah, telling her like that will go over really well."
"Emma, you're getting ready to enter your third month. You'll be showing soon. I'm surprised you're not already."
"My bump didn't appear with Henry until I was in my third month."
"All the more reason to tell her. She's your wife, Emma."
"I'm aware of that, mother. I just don't know how to tell her that I've been pregnant for months and didn't tell her."
"You wouldn't have that problem if you had told her already."
"Really?" Emma asked sarcastically. "Besides, how do I tell her that Neal's the father?"
"Just tell her the truth. If you don't want to then tell her it was an anonymous donor."
"That should work. But why didn't I tell her?"
"Cus you're chicken."
"You are so helpful." Emma looked at her phone, "I'm going to check on Regina. I'll be back." Emma left the dining room and turned the corner to find a teary-eyed Regina standing there. "Regina, when did you get up?"
Snow heard the mayor's name and stood to follow her daughter. She could tell the woman was devastated. "How could you?" Regina choked out.
"How could I what?"
"Cheat on me and then ask me to marry you!"
"Regina, I didn't cheat on you."
"Liar!"
"Regina, just listen."
"No!"
Snow went over and grabbed Regina's arms, forcing her to look her in the eye. "Regina, Emma was inseminated. She confided in Neal that she wanted to have another baby and he went to the hospital to have his sperm frozen."
"Is that true?" Regina asked without looking at her wife.
"Yes, and I didn't tell you because I didn't want you to worry about taking care of me. I knew you would and you need to be cared for right now more than I do."
Snow backed away and Regina faced Emma, "I'm sorry I yelled and jumped to conclusions."
"It's okay," Emma said, "I probably would have done the same if I had heard what you did."
"I'm sorry, Snow."
"You don't owe me an apology."
"Do you want some breakfast?"
"Sure," Regina said. Emma placed a protective hand on Regina's back and walked with her to the dining room. Snow went to get a plate, silverware, and glass from the kitchen. Regina still felt embarrassed for reacting the way she did. Emma did her best to make her wife feel better.
Emma and Regina had been married for a month when Emma reached her second trimester and was definitely showing. She actually began to show a few days after telling Regina.
"What were you going to do if you hadn't told me before your bump popped out?"
"Let you think I was getting fat until I had the guts and the right lie to tell you."
"We were a few days into our marriage and you were already planning on lying," Regina said amused, "I'm so proud," she joked.
"Well, I just want to go on the record and say how proud I am of your progress. You could barely stand for the wedding and now you're walking around here with a cane. Actually, you're back to walking around like you own the damn place."
"I do own the damn place."
"I meant the town."
"Still kind of own it."
"You're exasperating."
"Hey, you married me."
"I had to. I was a girl in trouble," Emma joked.
Regina busted out laughing. "I love you for that joke. You always know how to make me laugh."
"I promised you would be happy," Emma leaned in and kissed her wife.
"Are we going to find out the gender next month?"
"If you want to. I'm okay either way. Although, if you don't want to know I may find out without you."
"You better not. Well, I guess that would be alright. You could buy things for the baby and hide them at your parents' loft. Right now, I want to know."
Regina tried her best to find ways to rest and take care of Emma. The blonde helped her because she knew it was important to Regina.
Once Emma went in for her twenty-week ultrasound, the couple was in agreement that they would find out the gender. "Do you hear that?" the doctor asked.
"Why is the heartbeat so loud?" Emma asked.
"Because that's two heartbeats," the doctor answered.
"Please tell me there are two babies and not one with two hearts."
The doctor chuckled, "yes, you are having fraternal twins."
"So we're having one of each?" Regina asked.
"Nope, they're the same gender."
"You're killing us Doc," Emma said.
"Two healthy, strong, baby boys are on board."
The two women smiled, "looks like Neal will have a lot of playmates," Regina said. The couple went to the Nolan loft to tell Snow, David, and Henry. "Two brothers?" Henry asked excitedly.
"After Emma, it appears that we were only able to have boys," David said amused.
"It's for the best," Regina said seriously.
"What do you mean?" Emma asked.
"Well, how much would a girl benefit from having me as a mother? I mean, look at who raised me. I don't know how to mother a girl. I barely succeeded with Henry."
"That's not true," Henry said, "there was just a rough patch."
"I would have been just as happy with a girl or twin girls, but I would have been nervous. I've had a son and I'm more comfortable that the babies are boys."
"I never thought that I would be great with a daughter," David said. "While I didn't raise Emma, from the moment she was born I was in love. I would do anything for her and I did. Don't sell yourself short, Regina."
"Thanks," she said before smiling, "daddy."
"I hate when you do that," David said with a small smile while everyone laughed. Occasionally Regina would call David 'dad' or 'daddy' to mess with him. He always said he hated it but it always amused him. It made Snow, Emma, and Henry happy to see how far Regina and David had come with one another.
