Two weeks later, Regina was in the elevator on her way down to the lobby of city hall. When the door opened she saw Emma down on one knee. "What are you doing?" she gasped.
"What do you think?" Emma asked. Regina began to walk past Emma out of fear. Emma stood, "I love you." That made Regina stop. "I just want us to be together. I know you're afraid. I am too, but I want this and I'm willing to work for it."
Regina turned around and revealed her tear-stained face, "I can't make you happy."
Emma walked over and placed her hands on Regina's upper arms, "you already have. Now, I'd like to ask my question." When Regina didn't say anything, Emma proceeded, "will you marry me?"
Regina closed her eyes and nodded, "yes," she whispered. Emma took the mayor in her arms and kissed her before placing the ring on her finger.
The wedding was simple, but the whole town was there. Cora had surprised her daughter with the return of Henry Sr. She had given the man half of her heart. He had been under a preservation spell since Regina took his heart. She was unaware of that because the person who cast the spell, Rumple, didn't want her to know. He was going to use the man as leverage one day, but Cora made a deal with him. He gave her Henry Sr. and she wouldn't burn his shop to the ground. Cora and Henry Sr. escorted Regina to the alter. Snow and David escorted Emma. It was an unlikely wedding no one predicted, but it was beautiful. It wasn't love at first sight and that made it more beautiful. Here were two adversaries who fought one another, got to know each other, saved each other from time to time, and along the way they fell in love. True love always wins and this true love had decided that their family needed to expand.
Neal had returned to Storybrooke and agreed to donated sperm to Emma and Regina so that Henry could have a genetic connection to his sibling. Regina and Emma had decided to do things a bit differently. Regina was going to carry the baby genetically linked to Emma and Emma was going to carry Regina's. That way they could connect with each child that wasn't biologically theirs. Regina went first and had done something without Emma's knowledge.
"You did what?"
"I'm sorry," Regina said.
"You were implanted with both embryos?"
"Yes," Regina felt guilty.
"What the hell am I suppose to be implanted with?"
"There's a third embryo of mine. You had Henry who is your child. I'm carrying one that's mine and one that's yours. You can carry the other one that's mine and we'll be even."
"Wait, did both attach?"
"Yes," Regina slightly smiled.
"That's great," Emma said excitedly. "I'm sorry I overreacted. It's not that big of a deal."
"I should have talked to you first. I'm sorry too."
When Regina was four months pregnant, one of the babies died. Then two months later, Emma went to be implanted and the pregnancy didn't take. Regina decided to have an amnio to check on the still-living baby. She had once again done something without her wife's knowledge. She asked for a maternity test to be done on the living baby.
"Emma," Regina walked into the sheriff's office, "I got my amnio results."
"Is everything okay?"
"The baby is perfectly healthy."
"Then why do you look so sad?"
"I had them do a maternity test and the baby is yours. Both of my embryo's died."
"We'll try again once you've recovered from giving birth."
"You have eggs that are frozen. I only had two that could be fertilized and they both died."
"Did you ask the doctor?"
"No, I didn't want to."
Emma stared at her wife to try and read her, "you don't want the baby now, do you?"
Regina looked surprised, "oh my God."
"I'm sorry, honey."
"No, you're right. What's wrong with me?"
"You just found out something that's hard to digest. It's not that you don't want the baby. You're just sad that the ones that were yours didn't make it."
"Henry is our son and he is only genetically linked to you. Why should this be any different?"
"I never held Henry or anything. You spent the first ten years of his life alone with him. When I came around, you felt pushed out and less of a mother to him. Maybe you're afraid the same will happen again? Maybe you think that DNA will keep the child closer to you?"
"I think I'll go lie down." Regina left the room and Emma called their doctor. She found out that Regina did have two other eggs that were frozen. The mayor didn't know because she had signed a form to have any unused eggs frozen and when she got pregnant, it was information that was overlooked. Emma asked if they could fertilize the eggs and then test them to make sure they're viable. A week later, Emma was implanted. Snow and David stayed with Regina while Emma stayed at their loft. They told Regina that Emma was working late and didn't want to wake her wife so Snow and David stayed with her. The following week, Emma returned home.
"Do you want to tell me the truth?" Regina said.
"About what?"
"I know that the reason for you not staying here was a load of bull."
"Yeah, that wasn't my best lie."
"No, it certainly wasn't. Now, why did you lie to me?"
"I wasn't sure it would work and I didn't want to get your hopes up. You did have two other eggs that had been frozen. I had them implanted and tested to see if they were viable. One was viable and is frozen."
"And the other?"
"Is growing inside of me."
Regina felt tears fall down her face, "you're pregnant?"
"With your baby."
"Our baby," Regina corrected. She hugged Emma, "I love you so much."
"I love you too."
