6. Chapter 6-A Stormy Day

Chapter 6- A stormy Day

Subaru: "so how about we start over, let me introduce myself, I'm Subaru, Natsuki Subaru nice to meet you" putting his arm in the air and pointing his finger in the sky, looking towards the two girls

"..."

A few seconds of complete silence passed as the two of them looked at him with blank expressions

"..."

Subaru: "Well...this is awkward"

Feeling the awkward situation grow, Subaru shifted his head to evade both of the stares he was getting from them. As he turned to meet their gazes again Subaru saw the pink-haired girl about to speak up, "maybe she would greet me with kindness? as a maiden of my dreams?" Subaru thought to himself, instead, he got

Ram: "Ok Barusu, it's nice to meet you," She said shrugging him off like he was nothing turning his name into something unholy

Subaru: "Don't turn my name into a curse!"

Ram: "Isn't that your name though Barusu?"

Subaru: "...you know what ...never mind"

getting a bit annoyed at the girl's stubbornness to correct his name Subaru tried to switch the topic by asking the girls some questions instead, maybe then he wouldn't have to hear that cursed name again, he thought

Subaru: "Well...since we're on the topic of introducing ourselves, and since I introduced myself first, wouldn't it be fair for you to do the same?"

Looking at the girls in front of him, the pink-haired girl looked at him like he just said something stupid while the blue-haired one still hid behind her sister, still trying to avoid him

Ram: "huh? You don't know who I am? Do you live under a rock? must be typical of you"

Subaru: "There goes that arrogance of yours again, and what do you mean typical of me? We just met!"

Feeling his annoyance rise again Subaru recalled back to the conversation he had with Alec when he first arrived in this place, he did mention that this girl did have an attitude so I guess this was to be expected, he thought

Subaru: "Well...it doesn't matter anyway I already know who you are from Alec over here, you must be Ram and the girl behind you must be your little sister Rem right?"

Ram: "Yes Barusu, you are correct, and Alec I accepted better of you, telling this random boy about me and my little sister without me knowing? what if he was a creep or some spy trying to gather information on us?"

Alec, who was brought up in their conversation, standing behind Subaru, was now being glared at by Ram, looking at him with detest in her eyes just like she did everyone else so far. Alec who now was under the sharp gaze of Ram tried to defend himself, rubbing the back of his blonde hair and putting his head down in defeat Alec spoke up trying to sound apologetic

Alec: "My bad Ram-sama, you see when I first met Subaru here, I just noticed how he acted so much like you, so I just thought of you that's all"

Looking at him one last time with her glare, she calmed down a bit and went back to her usual blank expression after hearing his explanation

Ram: "Hmph, well your forgiving, just make sure it doesn't happen again, wouldn't want anything to happen to my cute little sister here now would we?

Ram turning around and patting her sisters light blue hair, getting Rem to look down at the ground getting a blush on her face from being petted by her sister whom she idolized so much

At this site before him, Subaru looked on with surprise as he saw the girl who was so arrogant and bashful, had a kind side after all even if it was only reserved for her sister

Subaru: "You really love your sister don't you? I didn't have any siblings or many friends back where I was from but I know how you feel to be overprotective of your sister, but don't worry I'm not a spy or anything, I don't even know where I am right now or what happened to me so you can relax, I'm no threat"

Walking towards the two sisters and closing the distance between them, Subaru put out his hand towards Ram who was still giving him a look of distrust, But Subaru didn't mind and smiled at her anyways

Subaru: "So why don't we become friends? I bet there are not that many kids around here judging by the size of this village, it must be pretty boring to be some of the only kids here, So how about we all become friends, what do you say!"

At the kindness, Subaru held in his tone, Ram's expression calmed down as her look of distrust turned back into her usual blank expression, walking past Subaru's hand that he extended towards her much to Subaru's dismay being rejected by her again

Ram: "It doesn't matter to me, as long as you don't do anything shady I'll be fine with you here, besides I was just testing to see if you were hostile, If you were a spy I would have no problem taking you out"

Rem: "Nee-sama, now that we're done with our training, is it ok if we go back and play together some more?"

Ram: "Of course Rem, how about we go back to the flower field and play there? And while we're there I can make you some of my special steamed potatoes"

smiling back at her cute sister Ram took Rem's hand into hers, and started to lead her to the flower field

Rem: "Alright, Nee-sama is so kind!" she said with a smile on her face as she followed right behind her sister holding her hand back

Watching as the two sisters walked away, Subaru couldn't help but feel a bit hurt, Yes they didn't know him that much but he was still trying his best to make a good first impression, Subaru thought to himself as he sighed in defeat

Subaru: "Well that hurts, I thought maybe I could at least get a smile back but it looks like this will be tougher than I thought"

Alec: "It's to be expected, not that many people in the village Ram-sama tolerates like I said most adults in this village disprove of her younger sister being allowed to live, So it's very hard to get on her good side, if you want to be friends with them, you'll have to gain her trust and respect first"

Subaru: "First I have to gain the village chief's trust and now her's as well? These people really have trust issues don't they"

Laughing at Subaru's observation Alec patted Subaru's black hair

Alec: "Well you're right about that, there isn't much of our race left, so it's to be expected that the people here have trust issues, don't worry too much about it, sooner or later Ram-sama will come around, despite her attitude she really is kind at heart, even if she doesn't show it, just think of it as "tough love"

Subaru: "I hardly sense any "Love" coming from her, she seems to only be kind towards her sister, but I'll try and gain her trust I won't give up so easily"

saying this with determination in his voice, Subaru readied himself to face any obstacles that get in his way, no matter what he will gain the Oni chiefs trust and the trust of that girl, he will be a part of this village

Alec: "Oh and by the way Subaru, that display of magic you did earlier, very impressive, I had faith you could pull it off but being able to almost match Ram-sama shocked even me, you truly have a lot of untapped potential within you, but there's one thing I need to check so stay still"

Subaru: "What are you doing?"

Putting his hand on Subaru's forehead and closing his eyes, blue light emanated from his hand, opening his eyes again, Alec looked at Subaru with a surprised expression

Alec: "Well...that's interesting"

Subaru: "What did something bad happen to me, why are you looking at me like that?" looking up at Alec who still had his hand on his forehead Subaru started Getting worried by the look on his face

Alec: "Oh...it's nothing Subaru, I was just checking what your magic type was and I got a bit surprised by what it was that's all, it's pretty rare in fact"

Subaru: "Really, what is it!, is it a burning fire of passion? Or maybe I'm a relaxed cool-guy water type? Or maybe a gentle wind blowing across the plain? Or is it Solid reliable earth?

Alec: "It's Yang"

Subaru: "All rejected!"

Alec: "That one is pretty rare Subaru, your pretty lucky, Yang magic or better known as light magic is a very powerful magic type, I'm so jealous," Alec said with an exaggerated tone

Subaru: "Light, that's sounds pretty powerful, what does it do?"

Alec: "like the name of the magic suggests, light magic allows the user to use constructs of light and any manner of light in an offensive matter such as firing concentrated light rays that burn anything to dust, its hardly a defensive ability, more of an offensive destructive ability instead, unlike water, earth, yin, and wind magic which can all be used offensively and defensively, Yang magic is purely offensive, which isn't bad as long as you use it right and unlike yin magic which is mainly used for debuffs Yang magic can also be used to buff a user's natural abilities meaning it can increase a user's physical attributes as well and if your skilled enough you can be able to coat or buff other objects in your light magic meaning objects even as useless as sticks can become weapons as sharp as swords"

Subaru: "Ohh, light magic sounds powerful, maybe I can fire off a Kamehameha, or use a Rasengan, or maybe I can fire off a spirit gun!"

Alec: "Kame-hameha?, Ra-senga-n? Subaru I don't know what you're talking about but the way you use light magic is by using the enchantments Jilwald, El, and Al for the more powerful effects, we can try them later in our sparring match we'll have later today, but for now, why don't you go chase down Ram-sama and try to make friends with her, I'm too busy right now to deal with you kids" Alec said trying to wave Subaru off

Subaru: "Busy? Not that I mind, I was planning to talk with her anyway, but didn't you say you wanted to train me?"

Alec: "Of course, I still plan to, but I have things to do, remember one of my jobs is patrolling outside the village to look out for intruders to keep the village safe, that's how I found you remember? So go on, we can train later today"

Subaru: "So you were using me as an excuse up to this point as a reason to slack off from work!? Looking up at Alec, he turned his head away from Subaru's glare as if he was trying to hide the guilty expression on his face

Alec: "..." "that doesn't matter right now Subaru, just go off quickly before they leave, this might be your only chance to try to be friends with Ram-sama and Rem"

Subaru: "You owe me one, remember that" saying this Subaru ran off to the nearby forest he came from to try to meet up with the two sisters again

Alec: "Alright you kids have fun,"

saying this Alec waved Subaru off with a smile as he walked away to patrol for the village, as he was walking on the path towards the village walls he felt something tap his shoulder, then again

Alec: "Oh this is unexpected, for such a bright day, I didn't expect it to start raining" looking towards the nearby forest, Alec sighed

Alec: "I hope Subaru isn't getting into any trouble with Ram-sama"

Subaru's POV:

Running through the big forest, Subaru looked everywhere to see if he could find the two sisters, it hadn't been that long since they left the training grounds, Subaru thought

Subaru: "This is a pretty big forest, hopefully, I didn't lose them already, maybe if I run fast enough I can catch up to them"

As Subaru continued to run through the thick brush, Subaru tried to pinpoint their location until he felt something tap his shoulder, then again, stopping in place Subaru looked up to the sky and saw that it was beginning to rain, feeling like he wouldn't make progress anytime soon Subaru then recalled back to when he first came to this world and he tried to hide from Alec when he was chasing him down, he remembered he found him by using his nose, his high sense of smell to track him, maybe it would work for him as well, Subaru thought

Subaru: "If I'm an Oni, maybe I can use my sense of smell to track them down, apparently Alec said Oni's have the highest sense of smell compared to all the other "races" whatever that means, so maybe if I try I can smell them out"

Standing in place Subaru closed his eyes and started to smell his surroundings with his high sense of smell, at that moment Subaru was overwhelmed by a mix of smells, he was able to smell everything in the area all at once at an alarming rate, from the tree leaves to the smell of mud to even each separate droplets of rain that fell from the sky, it was hard to get used to at first but then, he was able to sene two figures in the near distance

Subaru: "Found them"

As soon as Subaru sensed the two figures, he heard something, the sky began to rumble and the rain came down heavier than it was before and the clouds above became darker, a thunderstorm was about to accrue

Subaru: "I should probably find them quick, don't want to get caught in this when I find them I should probably warn them about this too"

Running for a few more minutes in the direction of where he smelled the scent Subaru was finally able to see two figures in the distance, one with pink hair and one with blue right behind, he found them.

Subaru: "Hey wait up! I need to speak with you"

Looking back towards the direction of the voice, Ram was surprised to find out it was the same boy from before

Subaru: "I'm glad I caught up with you, I thought you surely would have been gone by now"

Ram: "You are a persistent one aren't you, I thought you would have gotten the hint when I left you back there"

Subaru: "My bad, sorry to disappoint you but I don't give up so easily don't you see I'm trying to make friends with you? also there might be a storm coming soon, you should probably get inside before it gets worse"

Ram: "I don't know why you're trying so hard, the only person I spend my time with is my little sister, I don't have time for others" saying this Ram waved him off once again

Feeling rejected again, Subaru put his head down in defeat as the girl in front of him denied his offer to be friends once again

Ram: "And your right, it seems it will Rain even harder soon, I need to get Rem back home before she catches a cold"

Rem: "Does this mean we won't be able to play together some more Nee-sama?" Looking at her sister Rem's eyes were filled with sadness as she wouldn't be able to play with her sister today

Ram: "Don't worry Rem, as soon as this storm is over, I'll play with you as much as you want, I just don't want you to get sick that's all" Ram said patting Rem's silky light blue hair to reassure her

Rem: "All right...Nee-sama"

Subaru: "Your sisterly love really is something, I'm getting jealous over here"

Ram: "I can see why, Rem is Ram's little sister after all it's only natural you'd get jealous"

Subaru: "Well you win there, but I think we should get going now, this storm is starting to get worse by the second"

Looking up towards the sky Subaru noted how to clouds began to darken even more and started to rain down heavier by the second

Ram: "Rem and I are going back home, you should go back now, you don't want to get sick now would you?"

Subaru: "Nah I'm fine, I'll escort you back home, that's what a man is supposed to do! besides, I didn't come all this way for nothing"

Ram: "Fine have it your way, don't get upset when you get sick Barusu"

Walking ahead of the two girls, Subaru leads the two through the forest back to where the village was since it was his "obligation as a man" at least that's what he thought in his head. Looking up to the sky once more Subaru noticed something, not only did it begin to rain even heavier but he also noticed bolts of lighting firing from the sky, the storm was getting worse

Subaru: "Just a little bit longer, I think where almost there"

Rem: "Nee-sama, are we getting home soon, I'm getting sleepy" rubbing her left eye and giving a light yawn

Ram: "Don't worry Rem, it won't be long"

Subaru: "You won't have to wait any longer, we're almost there, I can smell the people from here" using his sharp sense of smell Subaru was able to smell the village people even from within the forest, which surprised even him

Ram: "How is that possible Barusu? Not even I can smell from that far away"

Subaru: "I'm not sure myself, this is my first time doing this you know"

Walking for a few more minutes Subaru looked up to the sky once more a saw that more lighting started coming down from the sky, a bit worried about where this would lead, Subaru tried to pick up the pace but in the matter of a second his worries came to fruition, in the blink of an eye a flash of bright light came down from the sky and hit a tree, he wasn't worried about himself, he thought he would be able to handle himself, it was these two girls he was worried about and at that moment his worries came true, as soon as the lighting hit the tree, it wasn't a tree in front of him he could easily avoid, instead, it was a tree that was directly behind Rem and Ram. Ram was easily able to see the tree coming but Rem on the other hand, still tired couldn't see the falling tree coming her way

Ram: "Rem!"

looking back at Rem, Ram tried to reach Rem who was lagging behind her but couldn't reach her in time, Rem looking behind her fell to the ground out of fear and closed her eyes waiting to be hit by the falling tree

Subaru: "I got it!"

pointing his finger towards the falling tree, a bright light emanated from Subaru's fingertip, and in the blink of an eye, a straight beam of light blasted forward towards the tree splitting it in two, as the tree hit the ground, Rem collapsed from exhaustion, running over to her sister Ram knelt down and shook her sister by the shoulders

Ram: "Rem!, Rem!, please tell me your ok!"

hugging Rem's body Ram tried to get a reaction out of Rem who was passed out on the ground, rushing over to the scene Subaru knelt down as well to see if she was alright

Subaru: "She's just unconscious, she'll be ok, I think she passed out because she was tired, it's nothing to worry about she'll be fine," Subaru said trying to reassure Ram who had a worried expression on her face, in fact, this was the first time Subaru has seen her genuinely worried, Subaru thought to himself

Looking at Rem one last time Subaru went down to her unconscious body and picked her sleeping figure in his arms, looking over to Ram who still looked worried Subaru gestured with his free hand over to a nearby cave

Subaru: "When we passed here I saw a nearby cave, we can hide out there until this storm blows over"

at this thought Ram just gave Subaru a slight nod and followed his lead, To Subaru, this was surprising as up to this point she was giving him the cold shoulder and being extremely arrogant but at the sight of her sister being possibly hurt must have sent her into distress, Subaru thought but left that thought for another time as his main goal right now was to get Rem to safety and wait for the storm to blow over, reaching the cave entrance Subaru placed the sleeping Rem gently down on the floor. At this moment Ram ran over to her sleeping sister's body, kneeling down next to her she held her hand into hers and intertwined their hands together

Ram: "Rem...please forgive me...I couldn't protect you...now your possible hurt because of my incompetence as your older sister" beginning to feel a tear run down the side of her face, she felt a hand press on her shoulder

Subaru: "Don't worry about it, it wasn't your fault, no one could have seen that coming, it was unavoidable, I'm pretty sure if Rem was awake right now, she wouldn't blame you"

Ram: "You wouldn't understand! as her older sister I'm supposed to protect her, shelter her, I'm supposed to be the person she can rely on!, and when something like that happened and I couldn't do anything, I shouldn't have the right to call myself her older sister!"

Looking at the girl in front of him that was on the verge of tears, Subaru knew he had to say something, he must say something.

Subaru: "Your right, I don't know how it feels, back where I was from, I didn't have any siblings, I was an only child, I don't know how it feels to protect someone or anything like that, but…" recalling back before he got transported to this world he remembered to words of his Dad and what he told him.

"Subaru Don't live your life in regret, you are your own person"

Subaru: "Don't live your life in regret, you didn't cause this there was nothing you could do, that's why you shouldn't start regretting something you didn't cause! Because if you keep regret you'll never be happy! repeating the words that his dad told him at Ram, she continued to sit on the floor in silence next to her sister

but at these words, Ram's mind went blank, not only did this boy save her sister, something she couldn't do but now he was telling her something that pocked at her heart, which hurt her pride a bit

Sitting right next to the silent girl Subaru looked away as he thought he might have said too much and was about to get hit, expecting a hit from the girl, surprisingly to Subaru, it never came, instead, Ram turned to him and met his gaze with a small smile, something he didn't expect, not only that but something even more unexpected happened which he never thought he would get from the girl who had so much arrogance a while ago

Ram: "What was your name again?"

Eyes wide open at the sudden question, Subaru smiled back at her and told his name once again

Subaru: "It's Subaru, Natsuki Subaru"

Ram: "I'll remember that, and I don't think I told you yet but...thank you for saving my little sister, she means the world to me, I don't know what I would do with myself if anything happened to her"

Subaru: "Was that thank you so hard to say? And don't worry about it, I'm just glad your both safe"

Exchanging one last smile with each other, they both looked outside the cave, waiting for the storm to blow over. After an hour or so of waiting the storm finally blew over, walking outside the cave Subaru stretched his arms outwards and yawned, and right next to him was Ram who had the sleeping Rem still in her arms.

Subaru: "I guess this is goodbye then, you can probably get back home by yourself now I bet, you don't need me to escort you still right?"

Ram: "I didn't need you to escort me anyways Barusu, I was fine all on my own, don't get ahead of yourself"

Subaru: "Back to that arrogance of yours already!?"

Ram: "Hmph, It's just one of the amazing perks of being me, I suppose you wouldn't understand that as well Barusu"

walking off with Rem in her arms, Subaru felt a bit annoyed again that her arrogance had returned but brushed it off assuming that if he was going to live in this village, he might as well get used to it just like everyone else. Walking back in the opposite direction Subaru remembered something

Subaru: "Oh crap! How long did we wait!? I need to get back to Alec so he can train me"

remembering this important detail Subaru ran back as fast as he could back to the training site, being able to use his sense of smell better, he was able to find the training grounds without any difficulty. Arriving at the training grounds he was met by Alec who was waiting there standing up with his arms crossed

Alec: "Well, Well, Well, how did and Ram-sama get along? you sure took your sweet time getting back here"

Subaru: "You could say it went fine, could have been worse"

As a silence blew through the air, Subaru looked at Alec, and he looked back, they both knew it was time.

Alec: "Well looks like I've kept you waiting long enough" getting into a fighting stance Alec grew a smirk on his face and gestured to Subaru to come forward, Subaru getting into a fighting stance as well looked at him with determination in his eyes

Subaru: "I'm ready when you are"

And at this moment, the clash between the two demons commenced
