A month after the curse broke, Snow and David had settled into their roles as grandparents and temporary guardians. They continued to make sure the children were having fun, staying positive, having phone and skype calls with their moms, and keeping busy.
"Henry, your grandfather and I were talking and Blue told us that she found a way for us to be able to leave town. We could visit your mom," Snow said.
"Nah, she'll be home soon. Now that she knows the curse is broken she'll want to spend time getting to know her parents."
"Oh, I meant Regina."
"Are we going to see mom?" Oliver asked excitedly.
"We can," Snow answered.
"When?" Remy asked.
"Well, I don't know. We can talk to your grandfather when he gets home."
Remy, Oliver, and the girls were excited at the thought of seeing their mother for the first time in a month. Henry wasn't the least bit excited.
Snow, David, Remy, Oliver, Odette, Faline, and Henry walked into the cancer center. Emma had given her parents Regina's room number weeks ago in the event they could convince Henry to visit. The room was empty. Snow saw a nurse and stopped her, "excuse me, we're looking for Regina Mills."
"She'll be back shortly. Her partner took her out to the courtyard for a bit. Make yourselves at home."
The five sat on a couch and chair in the room.
David saw the look on his wife's face, "you don't have to be nervous. Emma said she doesn't have magic out here."
"No, it's not that. I just don't know if I can see what this has done to her."
Emma wheeled in a very frail and gauntly looking Regina. The mayor had a scarf on since her hair had fallen out. She had no eyebrows or eyelashes. "Hey, this is a nice surprise," Emma said. "Let me help Regina get back into bed and then I'll greet you all properly. Emma pulled the covers back and took Regina's IV off the pole on the wheelchair. She placed it on the bed and lifted Regina out of the chair. Emma gently laid her down and covered her up before placing the IV where it went. The sheriff hugged her parents and her kids. "I wish I would have known you were coming. I would have made sure we were in here."
"That's okay," David said, "it was a bit last minute."
A doctor walked in, "good afternoon, Regina. I see you have some visitors."
"We're close friends of theirs," Snow said.
"You must be Henry, Remy, Oliver, Odette, and Faline. Your moms talk about you all the time." The kids gave the doctor polite smiles. "I have your latest test results back. I'm pleased with your progress. The treatment is working, but we have to continue it for the time being. Last time we talked about how your cancer had somehow spread to your left hip and knee. It's not getting any better there so a replacement for both would be beneficial. The sooner you decide the better because if it spreads much more then you may lose the whole leg. I know you're anxious to get out of here, but since you live out of town, we want to make extra sure that you're good to go. Do you have any questions?"
Emma spoke up, "so the other day, Regina was telling me all of the things she wished she could do before...dying. She said that she wished she could have another baby. Is that possible?"
The doctor looked at his patient, "you'll need time to recover. Make regular appointments with your primary physician and gynecologist. You can even make an appointment with me. A doctor will tell you when they feel it's safe for you to try. Right now, just focus on this battle. I know it's hard because when our lives are at risk, we tend to go over everything we have yet to do. I know you feel awful. Like I said at the beginning, it will get worse before it gets better."
"I'll have the surgery," Regina said.
"I'll put it on the schedule and let you know when it is. You're doing the right thing. It will be easier for you in the long run." The doctor left the room.
"Can we go now?" Henry asked, breaking Regina's heart.
"We just got here," David said.
"Henry, we're going to stay a bit longer," Snow added.
The boy sighed and sat down on the couch. Emma looked at Regina, "here," the blonde took some chapstick and applied it to her girlfriend's lips. "Better?"
"Thank you," Regina said in a raspy voice. She began to cough and Emma helped her drink some water.
"Emma, why don't you take David and the kids to get some food?" Snow suggested.
"Um, sure," Emma kissed Regina's forehead and left with her father and children.
"Did you not want witnesses when you pull the plug?" Regina asked.
Snow smiled, "I'm glad to see you have maintained your sense of humor. No, I wanted to talk to you."
"I'm sorry," Regina said.
"What?" Snow was a bit surprised by the statement.
"I was an awful person and I made your life hell. Now I'm paying the price and it's only fair."
"Regina, you don't deserve this."
"I know an entire town that would disagree with you."
"I forgive you. Will you forgive me?"
"I should have never put that much responsibility on you when you were only ten."
"Still..."
"I forgive you."
"Do you love my daughter?"
"More than anything. She's known about all of this and is still standing by me. I haven't felt so loved in a long time."
