Emma sat in her hospital bed in Storybrooke. She was in an unfamiliar town with no one to turn to. "Miss Swan," Dr. Whale walked in with an attractive brunette, "this is our town's mayor, Regina Mills."
"Am I in trouble?"
"No, dear," Regina smiled, "Dr. Whale told me about your predicament and I wanted to offer you sanctuary at my home. You and your baby."
"Really? Why?"
"I know that you want to keep your baby but are afraid of being on your own. If you stay with me then you have a chance at settling in with your child and being a successful parent. I've never had children, but I'm willing to help you."
"That's amazing," Emma said, "I'd love to."
"Great, Dr. Whale has my contact information. Call me if you need to and I'll get some things for the baby."
"Thank you so much, Mayor Mills."
"Call me Regina, Miss Swan."
"Then call me Emma, Regina."
Emma went on to give birth to a healthy baby boy. Regina visited her each of the three days she was in the hospital. They talked about anything and everything. Well, almost everything.
Three days after giving birth, Emma and her son went home with Regina.
"Are you all settled?" Regina asked as Emma walked into the kitchen.
"Yeah," Emma said, "thanks again for taking us in."
"It's no trouble."
"I heard that you're looking into adopting."
"Yes, I am."
"Well, why don't you help me raise Henry?"
"Henry?"
"I heard that was your late father's name. I figured it's the least I could do after you took us in."
"That's so sweet."
"Henry Daniel Mills," Emma said, "I remember you telling me about your late fiance."
"I don't know what to say except, thank you. Why Mills?"
"I don't want the father tracking us down. Plus, I figured it would help you to feel more a part of his life."
Regina felt tears in her eyes. She walked up to Emma and embraced her, "thank you," she whispered. "I really do wish I could have a baby myself."
"Why can't you?"
"Something I took years ago rendered me infertile."
"I'm sorry," Emma said, "but, science has advanced a great deal. Maybe you aren't infertile and can get pregnant with medical intervention."
"I doubt it."
"You'll never know unless you try."
"I guess I could at least look into it." Regina knew that a doctor would tell her what she already knew. There was only one way to make her fertile and medical science had nothing to do with it.
It had been six months since Henry's birth. The mayor decided to take action in order to get pregnant. Regina had told Emma she was going to a fertility clinic, but really she was working on a potion to reverse her spell.
"Emma, I have something to tell you," Regina said when she walked into the house.
"What's up?"
"I'm pregnant," Regina said with a slight smile.
"It worked?" Emma asked with a smile.
"I can't believe it either."
Emma stared at the woman for a bit, "something's wrong."
"What? No, everything's fine. I'm just nervous."
"That's normal," Emma said. "I'll be here with you the entire time." Emma kissed her girlfriend of four months. The two had been friends and getting to know one another since they met six months ago. Things escalated and now they were a couple.
Regina had trouble being pregnant. It was more difficult on her body than she had anticipated. Especially when she was caring for Henry.
"Honey, where are you?" Emma yelled.
"Bathroom!"
Emma walked in and found Regina on her knees trying to give Henry a bath. "You should have waited for me."
"He didn't wait to get filthy and I didn't want him getting the house dirty."
"I can take over if you want to try and rest."
Regina dried her hands off and handed one to Emma. The blonde helped her girlfriend to her feet. Regina winced and placed a hand on her lower back. "I can't believe I still have three more months to go."
"Are you gonna make it to the couch?"
"I'll be fine, dear."
Emma knelt down to finish giving Henry his bath while Regina waddled out to the sofa. Once Henry was clean, dry, dressed, and in bed, Emma joined her girlfriend. "Maybe we should find someone to help you when I have to run to the store or work."
"Who would we get?"
"I don't know, but you can't keep going on like this."
"Emma, I appreciate your concern, really I do, but I'm fine. Yes, I tire easily, but I can still function."
"I just don't want you to overdo it and something bad happens. I know how much you've been wanting a baby."
"I have a baby. It's just that I wanted to experience this myself and I am. The doctor said the baby and I are perfectly healthy."
"Promise me that you will tell me if you need a break or it gets to be too much."
"I promise, dear."
"I love when you call me that. It makes me feel so grown up."
Regina chuckled, "you're more grown-up than you think you are."
Regina went into labor one night during her ninth month. Granny came to stay with Henry while Emma took Regina to the hospital. It didn't take long for the couple to welcome another healthy baby boy.
"He's so beautiful," Emma said.
"I can't believe he's here."
"What's his name?"
"Remy Robert Mills"
"How do you feel?"
"Well, I'm sore and tired, but incredibly happy."
"That's how I was after Henry was born. If you want to sleep a little, I can keep an eye on him."
Regina handed the baby over to Emma and quickly fell asleep. Both women couldn't believe how lucky they were to have one another and their boys. This was it for both of them and if they could, they'd make it official. Little did they know how much their life would explode ten years after their first meeting.
