Henry was quickly discharged after an exam proved that he was healthy. Emma went to find the rest of the town while the boys waited for her at Granny's. They overheard something that terrified them. Henry and Remy ran to find Emma. The town was on their way to kill Regina and they knew that Emma would help. Emma ran up the walkway to pull Whale off of Regina. "If you kill her then you are no better than her."
"You really think I care about that?"
"Everyone get out of here."
"You're just trying to protect her because of your past," someone yelled.
"No, I'm protecting her because it's the right thing to do. Now, get out of here."
Everyone turned and left, "thank you," Regina said.
"I think it would be best for you to stay at the station for now."
"Why?"
"You'll be safer there."
Regina reluctantly went with Emma. She didn't want to sit in a cell but trusted the woman she once called dear.
Later that night, the mayor was attacked. Snow, David, and Emma fought to stop the attack. In the end, Regina was on the floor coughing and gasping for air. Emma ran over to help the woman to her feet.
"What was that thing?"
"A wraith," Regina gasped out.
"How do we get rid of it?" Snow asked.
"You can't kill something that's already dead. It won't go away until it takes its prey...me."
"Then we have a problem," Emma said.
"No, Regina has a problem," David said harshly.
"What?" Emma was surprised.
"David?" Snow was as well.
"You're just going to let her die?" Emma asked.
"Why not? That will make everyone else safer."
"I have two children with Regina. Your two grandsons," Emma commented.
"They don't want anything to do with her."
"No, I promised Henry and Remy that she wouldn't die." Emma turned to her ex, "are you alright?"
"I will be."
"What about...?"
"I don't know, but I don't feel that anything's wrong."
"What are you two talking about?" David asked angrily.
"I'm really getting tired of your attitude towards Regina."
"Excuse me?"
"Emma, it's fine."
"No, it isn't. You don't need this stress right now."
"Emma, what's going on?" Snow asked softly.
"Regina and I are expecting another baby," Emma announced, "Regina's pregnant."
"That's why you were so quick to protect her."
"That and I never stopped loving her. We can talk about all of this later, but right now we have to take care of that wraith."
Emma and Regina went to the mayor's office to obtain a solution to their wraith problem.
"Did the boys really ask you to protect me?"
"Yes, but I didn't need much convincing."
"I want to make things right."
"I know you do, and I'm willing to try. It may take time, but I know I'll regret it if we never try."
"I guess we better take care of this wraith so we can move on."
Emma and Regina headed to city hall to meet David and Mary Margaret. The plan worked except the wraith grabbed Emma's ankle and pulled her into the portal. Mary Margaret followed her daughter, unwilling to lose her again. David and Regina fought until Henry and Remy showed up.
"We don't want to go home with you," Henry said.
"Where are you going to go?"
"With me," David answered. He walked over to his grandsons and walked them out. Regina was left heartbroken. She never wanted Emma to get hurt.
Regina made the decision to show her sons that she was indeed capable of doing the right thing. She walked over to the well and placed her hands over it. Instantly she began absorbing the curse. After a moment, Regina was thrown towards a tree she narrowly missed hitting. She heard her sons screaming and she knew it wasn't for her.
"I'm sorry, boys," she said weakly.
"Mom," Henry whispered.
Regina looked up thinking he was calling her but the boys ran past and into Emma's arms. Regina struggled to stand but eventually made it to her feet. "Thank you," Emma said.
"You're welcome," Regina put on a smile.
"Your mother is a piece of work."
"Yes, she is."
"Boys, go ahead and follow Mary Margaret," the boys took off.
"I never meant for you and Snow to get caught in the portal."
"I know," Emma began to worry about Regina. She was pale and appeared weak, "you okay?"
"I just need a moment."
"You're being held up by a tree."
"That's why I need a moment. Go to your dad. I'll be fine. Oh, and welcome back."
Emma smiled and ran to Gold's shop.
It broke Regina's heart to watch the boys leave with Emma and her family. She hadn't even been invited. Regina thought Emma wanted to work on their relationship. Maybe things changed while she was gone?
"Here," Gold handed Regina a cane that was for sale in his shop. "You're going to need this."
"How long do you think I have?"
"A few days. If you want I can transport the cane to your home so you don't have to be seen with it."
"Thank you," Regina said.
"You really should tell them."
"I can't do that."
"At least tell Emma."
"I want this to be her last memory of me. Not what comes next." Regina turned and left the shop with her head hanging low. Gold was surprised by the recent change in Regina. She was behaving towards Emma the exact same way he would behave with Belle. Protect her at all costs. Even if it meant her own misery.
