Surprise Visitor
Buck was exhausted. He was so happy to be going home, though. He hated when he and Eddie weren't on the same shift. It didn't happen that often, but when it did, the shift always felt twice as long. It felt like something was missing.
But the sooner he got home, the sooner he could see Eddie.
The older man promised to be at his apartment, waiting for him, since Buck's shift ended when Christopher was still in school for another six hours. So, they'd have some time alone before it was time to be responsible adults.
And no matter how much Buck loved Christopher, he enjoyed his alone time with Eddie.
When he arrived at his apartment, he parked his car in its normal space. He got out and walked to the entrance. He was so tired that he didn't notice that Eddie's truck wasn't in a guest space.
When he got inside, he heard the shower running.
Buck smiled. A naked Eddie dripping wet. All soapy and slippery. What a nice thing to come home to.
He quickly shed his shirt and pants on the way to the bathroom. He couldn't wait to get his hands on Eddie.
He opened the bathroom door and shivered at the sight of the form he could barely make out behind the foggy sliding door. He reached out and slid open the door. "Good morning handsome," he greeted before he realized it wasn't his sexy lover taking a shower. "Oh! Maddie?"
Maddie whirled around. "Damn it, Evan! Don't you knock?"
"Me?" he screeched. "What-What are you even doing here?"
"Well, I was in town, and I wanted to see my little brother."
Buck pressed a hand to his forehead. "Well, you did."
Maddie laughed. "Yeah. I should probably…" She trailed off
"Okay. Okay, I'm gonna…" He trailed off too.
"Uh-huh. Yep,"
"Yep. Yeah." Buck ran from the bathroom, his face bright red with embarrassment.
He was in the kitchen, getting something to drink when Maddie came out. Fully clothed, thankfully. "You think there is any way we can unsee that?" he asked over his shoulder.
"Oh, come on. I used to give you baths."
He took the orange juice out of the refrigerator and two glasses from the cabinet. "Yeah, when I was two." He started pouring the juice into the two glasses. "Hey, how did you even get in here?"
"I told the building manager I was your sister."
Buck sighed. "And he just believed you."
"Well, having boobs doesn't hurt."
Buck was angry at the building manager. There was no harm done this time, but what if Eddie and Christopher had been here, and the building manager let a complete stranger into his apartment, on the stranger's word alone. Christopher and Eddie could both be hurt because the manager was careless. He'd be having words with Ralph later today. That was for sure.
He handed her a glass of juice. "How'd you know where I live?"
"Well, first, I went to the address the Christmas cards keep coming from, and the guy said you were here."
Buck frowned. "Wait. So you did get those Christmas cards?"
Maddie took a sip before she answered. "I'm sorry I haven't been in touch much lately."
"Three years, Maddie. I haven't heard from you in three years."
"Yeah, I know. And it's not what I wanted."
"Where's Doug?"
"Don't—" She was interrupted by the door opening.
Buck turned, a smile making his way to his face when the person he had been expecting in the shower walked in. "What happened to you being here when I got home?"
Eddie smiled sheepishly. "Sorry, I was hoping to surprise you with some breakfast from your favorite bakery." He lifted the bag as proof. "The line was longer than expected, though."
Buck chuckled. "Thank you for that. It's the thought that counts, but I would have rather have had you here instead of my favorite croissant."
"I'll remember that next time," Eddie promised, walking in and placing the bag on the counter. He finally noticed that it wasn't just the two of them.
Maddie's mouth was a perfect 'o' with her shock.
"Am I interrupting something?" Eddie asked, looking between Maddie and Buck with worry.
"Uh, that's complicated. Eddie, this is my sister, Maddie. Maddie, this is Eddie. We work together."
Maddie arched an eyebrow. "And he lets himself into your apartment and brings you breakfast?"
"To be fair, you let yourself in my apartment as well. At least with Eddie, I was expecting him." He paused. "And Eddie is also my boyfriend. No matter how high school that term is."
Maddie smiled. "I'm glad to hear it. I knew you were bisexual when we were young, but with our parents, I never thought you'd allow yourself that honesty."
"It was easier once I was out of the house. And when I met Eddie, well, there was no way I was going to lie to myself about what I felt. I mean, look at him." He gestured to Eddie. "Who in their right mind would deny themselves that?"
Eddie blushed. "Buck!"
Buck grinned. "Don't act so scandalized. You love my appreciation of your assets."
Maddie laughed. "I hope he's a good counterbalance to your craziness."
"That was what our captain was hoping, too, when we became partners at work. Eddie tried to keep me in check at first, but if anything, I corrupted him."
Eddie nodded in agreement. "So now Bobby has to deal with two of us going off the deep end with our stunts. I wouldn't be surprised if we pushed him into early retirement."
Buck smiled softly at Eddie. "Bobby loves us. He just pretends we torment him."
Eddie shook his head. "Whatever you say."
Buck looked at Maddie, but he didn't say anything. He didn't know what had happened with Doug, but he had never liked or trusted the guy, and he wasn't sure if his sister's husband was a sensitive subject or not. And whether she'd feel comfortable talking about him in front of Eddie.
"Maybe I should go," Eddie finally said.
Buck pouted as he moved around the counter. "I was really looking forward to some quality alone time with just you and a bed."
"I know," Eddie whispered. "Me too. But we'll get a chance again. You should catch up with your sister. Without me getting in the way."
"You're not in the way," Maddie quickly said. "I'm the one who didn't tell Buck I was coming. You two obviously had plans. If anyone is in the way, it's me. And maybe I should go—"
"No," Buck quickly interrupted. He was afraid that if his sister left the apartment before they talked, she might disappear from his life once again.
Maddie's eyes softened. "Buck, I wasn't planning to leave the city."
Eddie cleared his throat. "Maddie, it's fine. I see Buck every day. When we're not working, we're usually spending the day together, except for the rare days when we aren't scheduled on the same shift. You two catch up. Talk. I know how much Buck has missed you." He took Buck's wrist, his thumb pressing against Buck's pulse point that jumped at his touch. "And you, we will get that alone time. I foresee a sleepover at Abuela's house in Christopher's near future."
Buck's free hand lifted and touched Eddie's cheek. "Thanks."
They kissed each other, just a slight press of lips. Nothing too hot and heavy since Maddie was there watching.
When they separated, Eddie whispered, "Later."
"Later," Buck echoed. When Eddie was gone, he turned back to his big sister. "So…"
"My baby brother has hooked himself one sexy specimen of a man."
Buck blushed. "Enough about me. Let's talk about you. Back to my original question. Where's Doug?"
Maddie's good mood vanished. "Do you have time?"
Buck nodded and got comfortable as he listened to his sister's story.
