The smell of bacon wafting in from the kitchen was the first thing Tonks was aware of as she woke up. Her stomach gave a dangerous lurch, and she jumped from bed, hurrying to the toilet and promptly throwing up what little was still in her stomach from the day before.

She was dry heaving by the time Remus reached her. Tonks cursed the size of their house, not because she was bothered living in a small space but because, in this instance, it made it so much harder to keep him unaware of how she felt.

Neither one of them said anything until Tonks felt well enough to straighten up from the toilet. Remus left for a moment, only to come back with a glass of water that he handed to Tonks. She didn't trust herself to get up from the floor, but the cool tile beneath her felt welcoming anyway, just like the cool water did as it went down her throat.

"What do you think is wrong?" Remus asked, frowning down at her with concern.

Tonks busied herself with taking another sip of water. She knew exactly what was wrong: She was pregnant. She'd been noting the symptoms for the past week and couldn't think of a single other explanation that matched all of them. But she didn't want to tell him that before the Healers confirmed it. She knew that Remus would have a hard time accepting it, and she didn't want him to face that until she was certain.

"I must have eaten something that didn't agree with me yesterday," she said instead.

His frown deepened, and she knew that he was thinking about dinner the night before, which he'd cooked. Tonks pushed herself up from the floor and gave him a kiss on the cheek.

"Don't worry yourself about it," she said, patting him on the chest. "I've gotten it out and feel better now. Is that bacon I smell?"

"Yes, but are you sure that you're up for it?" he asked as he followed her into the kitchen where she'd already begun piling some on a plate.

"I'm always up for bacon," she said.

If her stomach sloshed a little when she took her first bite, she was going to do her best not to show it.
