Thank you all very much for your comments and for the congratulations on my new job. They made me happy.
By the way, I don't know anything about medicine but I did some research on the things I mention in this and later chapters, although it may be that everything I wrote is wrong. But ignore it, ok? :)
Sheldon opened his mouth to say something but not a word came out. His cell phone fell with a thud to the ground as he tried to hold onto something but he found nothing. He knew that he would fall to the ground, but his body did not respond to him. He braced himself to feel his body hit the floor, instead, he felt a different pair of hands hold him.
Leonard and the woman who until a few minutes ago had thought it was Amy held him up and led him to one of the chairs for him to sit down.
"What happened?" Asked the woman with concern. Sheldon still couldn't speak, but the sight of this woman who looked so much like his wife made him cry.
Randy bent down and picked up the cell phone "Yeah, hi. I'm friends with Sheldon" she lied "He was a bit surprised by the news you gave him and I think he's in shock. Can you tell me what happened?" Randy's forehead wrinkled as she listened to what the other person on the line was saying "I understand. Very good. Thanks."
"What did they told you?" Leonard shifted his gaze from Sheldon to Randy.
"Sheldon's wife had an accident. She apparently ran a red light and ... she was hit by another car."
"Is she…?" Kat started to ask but she was interrupted by Sheldon.
"No! She's fine!" He yelled. All the people in the cafeteria were looking at him but he didn't care "Amy is fine!"
"We must go," Leonard said. He turned to look at Randy "Did they tell you which hospital she is in?"
Randy gave all the information to Leonard and he was quick to apologize for the awkward situation they had put them in. The women assured her that they understood and hoped Amy was okay.
"It's my fault," Sheldon whispered when the two of them were alone in the car on the way to the hospital.
"What are you talking about?"
"It's my fault that Amy is hurt. "If I hadn't said all those horrible things to her, she wouldn't have left me and ...
"Either way, she would have left to go to work," said his friend to try to comfort him.
"Yes, but she surely was very distracted thinking about how I ruined our marriage and she did not realize that she should stop and ..." He couldn't continue speaking because the silent tears that fell down his face turned into sobs.
"She's going to be fine," Leonard assured him, glancing at him. "She and the baby will be fine."
"She ... did she tell you?"
"Yes," he said, "I think I'm the only one apart from you who knows."
Sheldon was silent the rest of the trip. He was very scared for the health of his wife and his baby.
All his life he had thought he was one of the brightest minds of his time, but he was wrong. For the last couple of days, he had been acting like an idiot. He refused to believe Amy when she assured him that she was not cheating on him and now for that, his life could be in danger.
He had never been a religious person, nor did he believe in any kind of God. But he did something that he had only done a couple of times. He began to pray for the health of Amy and her son.
"Sheldon, we're here," Leonard said, shaking him slightly by the shoulder to get him out of his reverie.
They both took off their seat belts. Sheldon walked quickly towards the entrance of the hospital while Leonard made sure that the car had not been in the way, a few seconds later he walked to where his friend was who seemed to be anchored to the ground.
"We must go in," Leonard said putting a hand on his back to make him walk.
"I'm scared," Sheldon admitted.
"Come on, Sheldon " he frowned, annoyed at the attitude of his friend "I know it's hard for you to come to the hospitals, but it's your wife who is here and..."
"And that's precisely why I'm scared," he interrupted him. "Because it's Amy who's lying on a bed in there while the doctors are checking her and ... I'm very afraid of what they'll tell me once I get in there."
"If you want I can go in and ask for her."
"No" Sheldon gulped "I can do this. I have to be brave for Amy and our baby."
They entered the hospital and Sheldon almost collided with a nurse who was carrying a house with medical supplies. He normally would have stopped to yell at the woman for being distracted, but at that moment the only thing that really mattered to him was knowing the health status of his wife.
"Excuse me," he said raising the tone of his voice when he saw that the woman at the counter did not take her eyes off the screen in front of her. "Someone call me to tell me that they brought my wife and I need to know how she is."
The woman frowned. "What is her name?"
"Amy Farrah Fowler."
"Oh yes," the woman answered after a few seconds of typing. "She was brought in twenty minutes ago. Doctors are still checking her."
"Is she fine? What happened? May l…?"
"A doctor will give you the information you want when they finish checking on her," the woman gestured toward the chairs behind him, "You can wait there."
Leonard took his arm and led him to the chairs the woman indicated before Sheldon exploded against her.
"Would you like something to drink?" Sheldon shook his head. "I'm going to get some coffee and… I'll let Howard and Raj know. Would you be okay if he left you for a couple of minutes?"
"Yes," he answered without looking up.
He couldn't stop thinking over and over that he was the one to blame for what had happened to his wife. He was so angry at what he thought he had seen in that cafeteria that he didn't stop to think and analyze things. He'd said a lot of hurtful things and he didn't think about how they were going to hurt Amy. What if it was too late now? What if Amy lost the baby because of him? He was sure that she could never forgive him and he could not live with the fact that he had lost his baby and with it his wife.
He didn't realize that he had cried again until he saw a hand in front of his eyes holding a napkin. He turned to the right. Leonard was sitting next to his and holding an empty glass in his other hand. How long had it been since he started crying?
"Howard and Bernadette will come here. Raj stayed to talk to President Siebert and let him know what's going on and then he'll come too" Sheldon nodded "I thought… I thought about telling Amy's parents, but…
"They weren't going to answer you. They went to Aunt Brenda's house. From what Amy has told me, she lives on a farm in the middle of nowhere, so there is almost no signal there and to communicate with her you have to talk to a store and the manager is the one who gives her the messages" he looked at her fingers. He bit his lip when he saw the empty space where his wedding ring was supposed to go "And I think it is best not to try to communicate with them until we know for sure how Amy is."
They saw that a doctor stood at the counter to talk to the woman who Sheldon previously had talked to and then he turned to look where they were so Sheldon quickly stood up.
"Mr. Cooper?" Leonard expected his friend to correct the doctor, but instead, he nodded "I'm Dr. Mont and...
"How is my wife?" Sheldon interrupted him. He didn't want to be rude to the man in front of him, but he couldn't take another second to find out about Amy's health.
"She has slight damage to her left arm due to the car window shattered and some pieces of the glass embedded in her arm. We've all removed them and stitched up her wounds," he added. "And she has some bruises, but she's otherwise stable."
"What about the baby?"
"We did an ultrasound to check that she was okay and ...
"Is something wrong with the baby?"
"We need the results that I ask it to do her, but everything indicates that both the baby and your wife are fine" Sheldon let out a sigh that he did not know he was holding.
"Can I see her?"
"In a few minutes she will be move to a private room and a nurse will come and take you there. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go see another patient."
"Of course. Thank you very much for the information."
Amy looked down at her left arm covered by the bandages. She tried to move her fingers but she couldn't. The doctor had told her that this was normal due to the anesthesia used to suture her wounds and that in a few hours she could regain the sensation of it in that arm. Still, she felt strange.
But she didn't really care if she regained the sensation or movement of her left arm. The only thing that mattered to her is that the baby inside her seemed to be healthy. She took her right hand and placed it on her belly, praying to a god in whom she did not believe, that the tests the doctor did reveal that there was no problem and that the baby was fine.
She suddenly started crying. She had already lost her husband and she would not bear the pain of losing her child as well.
Amy really believed that everything would be wonderful the moment she realized she was pregnant, but instead, everything had turned into a nightmare the moment she entered Sheldon's old room.
She opened the door, to discover her husband sleeping in what used to be his old bed. Amy smiled as she remembered the number of times she had imagined sleeping with him in that bed before they become sexually active. It had only happened once before her fifth anniversary and twice after they got back together, but they had never made love in that bed.
Amy meditated for a second. She could lie next to her husband and let him sleep or she could wake him up and share the exciting news about her possible pregnancy with him and she could even try to have sex with him in that bed. She did not believe that her friends cared, after all, they were already thinking of getting rid of that bed to start turning that room into the baby's nursery.
She leaned forward and put a hand on his chest. She was about to kiss him when he woke up and looked somewhat puzzled. After making sure he was okay, she kissed him, and for a few seconds, he kissed her back until he suddenly separated from her and accused her of having lied to him.
Amy was confused for a moment. Had she lied to him? It didn't make sense of what he had just said. What could she have lied about? Despite not having an eidetic memory like him, she had a very good memory so she tried to recall the conversations she had had with her husband in recent days.
Nothing that was a lie came to her mind. She stared at Sheldon for a moment. He was by the door, he seemed somewhat nervous and was moving his fingers on his right hand a lot ... like when he was trying to organize a joke and was afraid that things would not go as planned, so she smiled knowing perfectly what to do.
"Ah yes, I lied to you," she confessed with a smile. If Sheldon wanted to play, that's what she would do. "I was a very bad girl," she said, getting closer and closer to him. She really wanted to kiss him again. "And I need ..." Amy raised a hand with the intention of putting it on her husband's chest.
"This is the moment where you tell me you want a divorce, isn't it?" Sheldon said.
"The divorce?" Amy laughed slightly. Maybe it was some kind of role game that he had made up. She wondered if he had sent her an email informing her about it, but she didn't remember anything. "What the hell are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about."
"Sheldon, is this some kind of game you made up while I was away?" It must have been a game she said to herself. Because otherwise it was not explained what was happening
" No, it's not a game "he added" I went to the cafeteria and I saw you...
"Did you see me?" Amy's expression changed completely. He must have seen her run to the restaurant next to the cafe. She had entered there to ask to use the bathroom to be able to return the contents of her stomach "I can imagine what you are thinking and possibly you are upset, but... "
"Upset is too small a word to explain what I'm feeling."
"And believe me, darling. I understand you" surely Sheldon believed that she was hiding the pregnancy from him, but she wasn't, all her symptoms seemed to confirm it, but she did not want to talk to him until she was completely sure "I imagine how you feel, but it took me a while to process this. I'm not even sure ...
"What are you not sure about?" Sheldon asked aggressively. "Not sure about leaving me to go with your lover?"
She opened her mouth in surprise. Of all the things she imagined her husband would say, that wasn't one of them. "Sheldon, if you're joking, I want to tell you that is no longer looking funny to me."
"I wish this was a joke," he said. "But I didn't see anything funny in the way you looked and touched that man."
"What man are you talking about?" She frowned in confusion. The only man she had talked to was the restaurant waiter who told her where the bathroom was. They had only exchanged a few words, and she hadn't even touched him.
"Of the man, I saw you dancing with, in the cafeteria when we were supposed to meet there," he added. "That was your plan since you called me, wasn't it? You wanted me to see you with that man."
Everything that her husband told her sounded illogical. How could he see her dancing with a man in that cafeteria if she had never entered?
"Sheldon ..." Amy started to try to explain, but she stopped to put her hand to her mouth. Seconds later she ran into the bathroom to vomit ... again.
She thought that when she told him the news of her pregnancy, Sheldon would realize that it was all a great misunderstanding. For a moment Amy was glad to see him smile and she believed that he would hug her and everything would work out between them.
Oh, how wrong she was. Sheldon, her husband, the person she loved the most, was accusing her of having cheated on him, and not enough with that, he believed that his child could be another man's.
She, who for years had been with him, respecting his decisions about physical contact, no matter how absurd they seemed. She, that when she was single she could have slept with whoever she wanted and she did not because the only man who was interested in sharing her body and her life did not seem interested in her that way. She who returned with him, knowing that there was a possibility that they would never have intimacy. How could he think that she would cheat on him after everything they had been through together?
She had always been proud of the way Sheldon trusted her. He always asked for her opinion, even on trivial things like a simple haircut. Many times he said he did not agree with her and in the end, he ended up doing what she had suggested. But apparently, Sheldon didn't trust her as much as she had believed.
For most of her life, many people had said all kinds of hurtful things to her and she always managed to move on because most of them were people with no relevance in her life. Her mother had also said hurtful things to her for a long time and when Amy had the opportunity she slowly moved away from her mother. The only reason she kept talking to her mother was that her father had asked her, otherwise she would not have seen her mother for years.
But none of those hurtful words and the pain they had caused her could compared to the pain of hearing Sheldon doubt her fidelity and his paternity over the baby she was expecting. So Amy knew that she would not be able to continue in a relationship with Sheldon after what he had told her, even though she already missed him and she wanted to have him with her at that moment.
As if he had read her thoughts. The door opened and the person she most wanted to see, but she also did not want to see again, poked his head out.
"Hi," he said, shyly entering the room. He approached her and tried to take her healthy hand between his, but she moved her hand to prevent him from touching her "I thought… I thought you were asleep."
"I told you I didn't want you to come near me again." She looked out the window to avoid looking at her husband. She knew that if she looked at him, she would start crying and she wasn't going to allow it "Go away."
"Amy, I want..."
"I don't care what you want. Get out of here or I'll have to yell to ask someone to take you out of the room and forbid you to return."
"Don't do that," he pleaded. "If you want me to go ... I will. But first I need you to listen to me."
"I'm not interested in anything you have to say."
"Just give me some…" Sheldon turned around when he heard the door open.
"I hope I don't interrupt something important," Dr. Mont commented when he realized that the couple in front of him seemed estranged. "But I have the results of the tests."
Immediately they both turned to see the doctor and Sheldon was the first to speak. "Is everything okay with our baby?"
