Sheldon took the glass of water from Amy's hands and placed it on the table next to the bed. Instead he places the key to their new house. Amy stared in disbelief at the key to the new house. She couldn't believe that Sheldon had bought the house.
When she had commented that they could use some of the money they won from the Nobel prizes to buy a house and she showed him pictures of some houses for sale, Sheldon had started a spiel about why they could not move out of the small apartment. Amy had been so busy with her lectures that she didn't insist and completely forgot about that house. Until now.
In the last few months she had achieved everything she had dreamed of. She was at the peak of success professionally. She had married the love of her life and they were expecting twins. And not enough with that, now she could live in her dream house. She had everything what she always wanted, but that she believed she would never have. But now it was a reality. So why did she have that horrible pain in her chest that wouldn't let her breathe?
"Amy… " the voice of her husband brought her back to reality "Are you okay? Wasn't that the house you wanted? " The lines on Sheldon's forehead creased at his concern.
"Yes, I… That's the house that I liked."
"Then why don't you seem happy with the news that I bought it and now it belongs to both of us? I know you said you still don't forgive me, but I'm sure I'll earn your forgiveness and... "
"And what if I never manage to forgive you? " Said Amy "Do you want us to live under the same roof when there is a possibility that nothing will ever happen between us as a couple again? "
"Yes" he answered after a few seconds in silence "It hurts just to think that I will wake up every day and you will not be in my arms, that I will see you and I will not be able to hug you, or kiss you ... but it hurts even more to think that if we live apart I will only see you for a few minutes and I will miss many details of the pregnancy" he approached his wife doubtfully and placed his hand on her belly "I trust that I will make you forgive me and we can get back together as a couple, but if one day you decide that you want the divorce, I... " he kept silent for a moment since his voice was shaking. "I will respect your decision. "
"Okay. "
Sheldon smiled at that. "Are you going to agree to live with me in our new house?"
"I need a few days to think about it- her husband was a little discouraged but did not protest. "
Amy spent almost another week in the hospital as the doctor wanted to keep her under observation in case there was any other problem. In that time, when her friends were not keeping her company, they would be with Sheldon helping him move to the new home.
Sheldon hadn't wanted to leave her alone, but after her mother arrived and found out about the babies, Mary had been over the moon with the news that she would be a grandmother again and when they told her about the new house, the woman had insisted on that he should have everything ready for when Amy left the hospital and could take proper care of her and the babies.
So in the end, Sheldon went in the morning to transport the belongings from their apartment to the house and at night he returned with Amy. She had told him that it was not necessary for him to stay to accompany her to sleep every night since the small armchair was very uncomfortable, but she could not have made her husband change his opinion of leaving her alone despite he didn't sleep almost nothing.
Her parents had returned days before their vacation ended to be with her, despite the fact that Amy had assured them that she was fine and that she was not left alone because Sheldon, her mother and her friends were there. But when Raj inadvertently mentioned the babies, his father insisted on coming back. Two days later they were with her happy that they would finally be grandparents.
One day, her mother entered the room without knocking and found her daughter quietly arguing with her husband. The woman realized that something strange was happening between the couple and she told Amy that she could go home anytime she wanted.
Amy thanked her mother and assured her that everything was fine between them, that they were arguing because she wanted to go to the bathroom without his help and Sheldon insisted that he should help her. Her mother seemed to believe her and she did not insist on her living with them again. Amy tried to convince herself that she said those things because the idea of living with her mother again was a nightmare and not because of the look of horror on Sheldon's face when he realized that Amy might go somewhere else instead of home that he had just bought.
The day the doctor told them that they would finally discharge her, Amy talked to Sheldon and told him that she would agree to live with him on the condition that they would not tell their parents what had happened between them and that they would tell their friends that she have forgiven him and everything was good between them. But it would be a lie. They would keep separate rooms and for a year their marriage would be on probation.
If at the end of that year, one of the two asked for a divorce, the other would have to accept and then they would make a decision regarding how they will raise the twins.
"Are you sure you want to do this?" Amy asked again. "We can tell everyone the truth. I will go to my parents' house and you can try to get back the money you paid for ... "
"No!" Sheldon exclaimed a little louder than he wanted. "I'm not going to change my mind. I want to live with you and our children, but… if it's not what you want… I can go back to our old apartment and you can stay in the new house. "
"Sheldon, I couldn't do that. You bought the house. "
"I bought it for you and our children," he saw Amy part her lips but before she could say anything he added "And I can't get the money back because I bought the house and put it in your name. "
"Sheldon... "
"No matter what happens between us, the house is yours. "
Amy wanted to protest but just then someone knocked on the door.
"Come in," said the woman so that whoever she had touched could enter.
"Leonard is already outside in the car waiting for you" her mother-in-law told them.
"Excellent, we can finally get out of here" Sheldon gently took Amy in her arms and placed her in the wheelchair that he had bought so that he could easily transport her wife, now that she had to avoid walking.
"Shelly, the doctor needs you to sign a couple of papers," her mother reminded him. Sheldon frowned.
"I thought he said that it was all set." He looked at his wife with indecision. "I don't want to leave Amy alone."
"I will be with her all the time."
"Fine," he said after a few seconds. He kissed Amy's hair before leaving the room.
A few minutes later Amy was looking out the car window. She had only been hospitalized for a week but it felt like forever and she was glad to see the streets, the buildings and the people walking up and down the sidewalks.
"You missed the detour to go to the apartment," Amy said, turning slightly backwards.
"Do you want to go to the apartment for something? " Asked Leonard confused looking in the rearview mirror to see his friend Sheldon did not mention anything to me.
"Go for something?" Amy frowned. "Did you forget that's where we live?"
"That's where you lived," Leonard reminded him with a smile. "You have a new home."
"Oh ..." Amy's expression changed completely "I forgot about the new house." She smiled slightly. "I still can't believe it's real."
"As someone who has spent the last five days carrying furniture and everything you'll need to be comfortable, I can assure you that the house is very real and you will be delighted to see how it was decorated. "
"That reminds me." Sheldon pulled a handkerchief from his pocket.
"Are you thinking of blindfolding me?" Asked his wife.
"It's correct" he seemed to see a mischievous glint in her eyes that quickly disappeared.
"Now?" She asked when Sheldon leaned toward her.
"We're about to arrive," he said before placing the handkerchief around her eyes. Then he made several motions with his hand to make sure she didn't see anything. "Very good. We're here" he announced a couple of minutes later. Amy tried to remove her handkerchief but Sheldon stopped her "Not yet" whispered him very close to her ear so she shivered slightly at the sensation of Sheldon's lips so close to her. She couldn't help but think of a couple of weeks ago when her husband had blindfolded her, in a completely different situation.
She had not even entered the house, and she was already rethinking the idea of living under the same roof as him, knowing that nothing should happen between them, one because the doctor had forbidden them to have intimacy, at least for a couple of months in which made sure that the detachment would continue to be minimal and two, because she had promised herself that she would not have sex with Sheldon unless she could forgive him. She knew that if that happened it would only serve to complicate her relationship with her husband and she doesn't want that.
"It's all set," Sheldon informed him as he ran a hand down her back and another under her legs to lift her up.
"Sheldon, I think it would be better if I walked…" she said, but still she put her hand around her neck.
"Don't worry, I would never let you down," he assured her. He held her firmly and a few seconds later placed her in the wheelchair.
"Can I take this off now? "
"In a moment," Sheldon pushed the wheelchair. Amy heard how she opened a door so I imagine they had entered the house "Now you can" her husband removed the blindfold from her.
Amy took a second to open her eyes. She took a deep breath and when she finally had the courage to open them. What she saw took her breath away. The house was more beautiful than she remembered. Sheldon and his friends had done an excellent job decorating the house.
"Do you like it?" Asked her husband. She watched him carefully knowing that he was worry about her reaction.
"I don't have words to describe ... how much I like it." He looked around the house. "It's beautiful."
"I'm so glad you like it." Sheldon smiled pleased. All the tiredness that he had felt all week disappeared the moment he saw Amy's smile "Do you want me to take you to the room so you can rest?"
"No, I want to go all over the house." She tried to stand up but Sheldon stopped her. "Won't you let me walk?"
"Not if it can be avoided. "
"Fine," she reluctantly agreed, settling back into the wheelchair.
"I'm going to leave Amy's suitcases in the room and then I have to go back to Penny," Leonard commented after giving his friend a kiss on the cheek. "I'm glad you're back."
"Thank you ... for everything," she answered, squeezing his hand tightly.
"I will help Leonard with the suitcases so that you can enjoy the tour alone through the new house" said Mary, following her son's friend.
"So… Is there anything you want to see first?" Sheldon asked feeling somewhat uncomfortable seeing the expression on his wife's face when she realized that they had been left alone.
"I don't know," Amy said. She didn't want to be rude to Sheldon but she hadn't thought that she would be left alone with him so quickly "What is that?" She pointed her finger at one of the furniture that had various objects. When her husband approached it, she could see that those objects were portraits "What is this? "
"These are photos of several of our moments together" Sheldon took one of the portraits and placed it on Amy's lap.
"I've never seen this photo," Amy whispered as she looked closely at the image. Despite not knowing about the existence of that photo, she remembered that day perfectly. She and Sheldon were friends at the time and she had decided to visit him again at the university. And in that photo they were both in the cafeteria and Sheldon was laughing at something she was saying.
"Where did you get this picture?" Asked Amy surprised.
"Rajesh saw us that day and decided to take a picture of us because he thought that one day I would need evidence to confirm that I fell in love with you almost from the moment I met you" Hehe answered. He desperately wanted to hold her wife's hand, but he knew she would reject him "Raj showed the photo to me a couple of weeks later and I told him that he had lost her mind."
"That sounds more like you," she whispered under her breath. But still Sheldon managed to hear it.
"What he didn't know is that when he went to the bathroom and left his phone on my desk, I unlocked it and sent that photo to my phone. "
"Why did you do that if you didn't think you were in love with me? "
"I didn't want to admit it to myself at the time, but ... I love the way I see you in that photo and I'm sure it's the way I've looked at you for the last ten years."
"Well, apparently you and I have different memories about the way you saw me at the beginning of our relationship," she couldn't help saying with some bitterness.
"Amy... "
"I feel a little tired" she said suddenly "Can you take me to my room?"
Sheldon wanted to say something else but he knew it was best to keep quiet so he just nodded and did as Amy asked.
"I noticed you two slept in separate rooms last night," Mary commented casually while the three of them had breakfast in the dining room. "Is everything okay between you?" She looked from her son to her daughter-in-law.
Sheldon stiffened upon hearing that. He looked up from his plate to see his wife, who had grabbed a napkin to wipe her lips.
"Well, that's because Sheldon... sometimes when we are sleeping if Sheldon is nervous or worried about something, he tends to move a lot and in occasions he punches me. It is not painful or anything, but sometimes it wakes me up so ... " she shrugged "With everything that has happened these last days he insisted that it would be better for me and he, if we sleep a few days apart in which everything returns to normalcy" finished Amy trying to sound convincing.
"Okay" Mary answered after a while. "That sounds appropriate given your condition."
After that conversation with Mary, things between Sheldon and Amy seemed to improve a little, they spent most of the day together watching some program on the giant television that Sheldon had bought for the living room.
Mary had assured them that while she was there, she would take care of preparing meals and cleaning the house. Sheldon had gratefully accepted the help with the meals but had insisted on at least helping with the cleaning.
Raj, Stuart and Denisse visited them frequently, as Sheldon had steadfastly refused to meet them anywhere other than his home because he had no intention of leaving his wife alone. Howard and Bernadette had visited them a couple of times and Amy had been pleased to see Halley that she seemed very excited to tell "her aunt" about what she had learned about monkeys in kindergarten. And Leonard and Penny had only been able to visit them once as Penny got tired quickly and she just wanted to eat and sleep all day.
"Now if you tell me what is happening between Sheldon and you? " Mary asked the night before returning to Texas.
"What are you talking about?" Asked Amy trying to sound confused.
"I've been here for almost a month and you and Sheldon haven't slept a single night together."
"Well, we already explained that it is because ... "
"That's what they wanted me to believe," interrupted Mary, "but that doesn't explain why I haven't seen you kiss or at least hug each other when you're watching television."
"You know exactly how Sheldon is about showing some kind of affection in public. "
"But you are not in public, you are at home," the woman reminded her. " Also, I don't remember that he cared much about not showing affection when I found you two making out in my living room before his siblings arrived to celebrate the New Year.
"So you saw us, huh? " Amy blushed when she heard that "Well, now… "
"Honey, I don't want to be that mother-in-law who interferes in the marriage of her son and her daughter-in-law, but… I have been Sheldon's mother for the last forty years and I know him perfectly. And with you I have not spent as much time as I would like, but I want to believe that I also know you and the way I have seen you act these weeks ... made me realize that something is happening between you and him.
"Mary... "
"Amy" the woman sat next to her and took her hands "A part of me wanted to believe that you were acting strange because you were worried about the health of the twins, but three days ago the doctor confirmed that they are growing healthy and even so, Sheldon and you don't seem completely happy. "
"I don't think I'm the one who should tell you what's going on," Amy replied with tears in her eyes. "You should talk to Sheldon."
"And I'm going to do it, dear" Mary squeezed her hand tenderly "But first I want to hear what you have to say."
