This chapter was longer than usual so I preferred to divide it in two. The main reason is because I don't know when I'll have time to write, so the second part of this chapter (which will now be chapter 15) will be published on Sunday. And I will try to publish chapter 16 the first week of December.
Thank you all for reading and commenting!
22 weeks pregnant.
"Do you really think it's a good idea? " Leonard imitated his friend and also stood up "Amy wrote you that she didn't want you to look for her. You can make things worse between her and you. "
"Leonard, stop," Sheldon asked. "Nothing you say will convince me otherwise. I'm going to find Amy" he stopped in the middle of the hall when he touched the back pocket of his pants and found nothing.
"What's going on?"
"I don't know where my cell phone is" He turned around looking for the cell phone with his eyes.
"Wouldn't you have left it at the office?"
"I don't think I even took him out of the house" Sheldon said after trying to remember where he could have left it.
"Well in that case I'll call you, and if your phone is here we'll hear it when it starts to ring" Leonard dialed his friend's number and a few seconds later they both heard the imperial march from Star Wars "I think it's in the kitchen."
Sheldon ran towards it while Leonard followed him walking without hanging up the call for Sheldon's phone to continue ringing.
"Here it is!" He exclaimed, after opening the drawer where he kept the spoons. He unlocked the phone and realized he had several missed calls and messages "Oh no" he whispered.
"What's wrong?" Leonard asked, approaching him. Sheldon ignored him and looked at the time on his watch.
"Oh, no" he repeated even louder "Amy ..." He ran past Leonard without even looking at him. Who stood in the middle of the kitchen not knowing what to do and worried that something had happened to Amy.
"Are you ready?" Asked the man in front of her. Amy didn't even look up.
She was staring at the screen of her cell phone, waiting for Sheldon's name to appear in the form of a call or message at any moment. But with every second that passed she became more and more convinced that this was not going to happen.
Amy knew she shouldn't be surprised. After all, she had ignored him for weeks. But when she decided to return to Pasadena the day before, she thought she should inform Sheldon that the first place she would go after returning was to the hospital since she had made an appointment to find out the gender of their baby and she wanted him to be there with her.
She had called him several times, sent him messages and even a couple of emails, but he was ignoring the messages or hadn't even bothered to read them.
She felt like she wanted to drain a tear, but she bit her lips hard to keep from crying. After a few seconds she looked up and saw that Samuel was watching her.
"Don't look at me like that," she told him.
"Amy, surely Sheldon is very busy or the traffic is preventing him from arriving and ... "
"Or he just doesn't want to see me."
"Look Amy, I'm sure there is a good reason why Sheldon has not arrived" He looked at the time on his watch "I have to see another patient in about twenty minutes and I know you want your husband here. So why don't we make another appointment for tomorrow and…?
"No," she interrupted him, "Sheldon isn't here, because he didn't want to. And I'm not going to keep waiting for him. I'm ready" Dr. Mont didn't answer anything. He just nodded and pointed toward the examination table.
Amy climbed onto the exam table and lifted her blouse as the doctor pulled the ultrasound machine closer to her.
"Are you sure?" He asked. He grabbed the gel and turned to look at Amy.
"Yes," she said. Samuel placed the gel on her belly. He was about to place the transducer on Amy's belly when the door slammed open.
Immediately they both turned to look towards the door where Sheldon was trying to get some air to be able to speak.
"I came as fast as I could," he said with his voice broken by the effort he made to run from the hospital parking lot to the office door. "Did I miss it?"
"No," Amy replied. Her heart began to pound the moment she realized that it was her husband who had arrived. "I thought ... I thought you wouldn't come," she admitted.
"I would not miss this for anything in the world" He took a few unsure steps towards her, but seeing that Amy extended her hand towards him, Sheldon shortened the distance between them and took her wife's hand between his.
They looked into each other's eyes for who knows how long. It was until Dr. Mont cleared his throat that they both remembered where they were.
"Are you ready to know the sex of your baby?" Samuel asked with a smile. It had been a short time since he had known the couple in front of him, but he was really glad to see them together again and he hoped that this moment would be their opportunity to finally solve all the problems that had occurred between them.
"Yes," Amy confirmed without letting go of her husband's hand.
Dr. Mont placed the transducer on Amy's belly. For a few seconds he was moving it without saying anything, until he found what he was looking for.
"The baby seems to be in perfect health. The size is also suitable for the weeks it is and..."
"What was that?" Sheldon asked, staring at the monitor in front of them. "It seemed as if the baby had opened the mouth.
"It's right. The baby just yawned."
"Really?"
"Yes" the doctor confirmed "At this stage the baby's bones and muscles are already developed so the baby can stretch, yawn and make facial expressions."
"That's amazing!" Sheldon exclaimed as if it was the most wonderful thing he had ever heard.
"Do you want me to tell you the sex of the baby?" He asked again. Many parents used to change their minds at the last minute so he wanted to make sure Sheldon and Amy hadn't regretted it.
"I'm ready, but ... " He turned to see his wife "If you want to wait until the baby is born, so be it. "
"I don't want to wait any longer," Amy said, looking into his eyes. Sheldon's heart warmed to the thought that perhaps his wife wasn't just talking about the sex of their baby.
"Very good" the doctor nodded "I'm sure she will be as interesting as her parents. "
"She?" Sheldon asked, not sure if he had heard correctly. "It's a girl?"
"Yes" Samuel placed the transducer on the machine and then cleaned the remaining gel from Amy's belly.
"Amy, did you hear that? " He glanced from the screen to his wife "We are going to have a daughter! "
"Are you happy?" Asked Amy with a slight smile on her face.
"No ... I have no words to describe how I feel at this moment," Sheldon answered. "I think it's the best news I've heard in my life."
"Better than when they told us we had won the Nobel Prize?"
"All my life I believed that day would be the best day of my life and… I just realized how wrong I was for years. "
"Oh, Sheldon," she squeezed her husband's hand and completely forgetting where they were, Amy took him by his shirt and pulled him toward her to kiss him. Which took Sheldon by surprise, but he immediately reciprocated her kiss.
It was only a few seconds, but when they parted, Sheldon's cheeks felt hot. He had never been a big fan of public displays of affection, although he was not going to waste the opportunity to kiss his wife after all the time that had passed.
Still, it was not the right place so he turned to apologize to the doctor for what he had just witnessed, only to realize that Samuel was not in the room.
"Where is he?" Amy looked just as confused as he was. But they couldn't help but laugh at what had just happened.
"Surely he had to go out to see another of his patients" she looked at the time on her watch "My appointment took longer than he thought and... "
"About that, Amy, I didn't want to be late ..." His wife put a finger on his lips.
"We can talk about that elsewhere. "
Sheldon was about to say something when Samuel came back into the office and handed Amy an envelope.
"That's for you," he added. "It's a video and pictures of the ultrasound. I Imagine you wanted to have it."
"Of course " Amy smiled gratefully "Thank you very much. "
"So…" Sheldon said, not sure how to continue. "Do you want me to take you to your parents' house or some other place?" He asked once they were inside his car. Amy's suitcase was in the backseat and Sheldon hoped it was a sign that she planned to stay in Pasadena, even if it wasn't with him.
"No, nobody but you knows that I came back and I hope that everything stays that way. At least for a couple of days. "
"That will be a bit difficult" Sheldon shifted somewhat uncomfortably in his seat "I imagine that at least all our friends already know. "
"Sheldon, why did you tell them? "
"I didn't say anything to anyone" he defended himself "But Leonard was in the house when I saw all your calls and messages. I said your name without thinking and from there I ran without saying anything so I can suppose that Leonard must have called everyone to ask if they knew anything about you. "
"Okay. I guess I'll have to call the guys to let them know I'm fine" Amy opened her bag and started looking for her phone. When she unlocked it she saw that she had several missed calls from her parents "It seems he didn't just call our friends. "
"Why do you say it? " Sheldon glanced at Amy who showed him the notifications on the screen of her cell phone "Is that a new phone?"
"Yes, I... bought it for... "
"Being able to communicate with your parents without having to use your old phone, which I've been calling every day since you left," he commented, sounding more resentful than he wanted.
"I'm sorry," her wife apologized, looking down at the phone in her hand.
"You don't have to apologize," he said quickly. It was not his intention to make Amy feel bad "I understand why you did it and in any case it is me who should apologize to you."
"I don't think it's a good idea for us to talk about this while you're driving. "
"You're right. Should we go home? " He asked. He wanted for her to say yes, but he wasn't going to pressure her.
"Yes" Sheldon couldn't help but smile upon hearing that "Let's go home."
He thought about telling her how glad he was that she had decided to come home, but before he could, he was interrupted by the ringing of a cell phone.
"Is my mom," she informed him, who seemed to be hesitating between answering or not.
"You should answer," her husband advised her. "Probably they are worried that something has happened to you or our daughter." Amy saw Sheldon's eyes light up when he talked about the baby.
"You're right" she put the cell phone to her ear "Hi mom! Calm down, I'm fine and you ... your granddaughter is fine too "for a second only silence was heard on the other end of the line, but then a cry of joy was heard so Amy had to take the cell phone away from her ear "I'll tell you all tomorrow, mom" looked askance at Sheldon who pretended to be focused on driving "Yes, I'm with him."
Sheldon didn't understand what Amy's mother was saying to her, but from the tone of her voice, he imagined that the woman was trying to convince her daughter to go home with them, rather than go home with him.
And Sheldon knew that if Amy asked him to taker her home to her parents, he was going to accept it no matter how much it destroyed him internally.
