Chapter 39: The Beast from Shane's Past

2 Blakk guards were patrolling outside a ghoul depot outside of Nightmare Ridge. The one guard was a bit shaky and cautious. "Hey, will you relax?" The second guard asked. "Can't help it! Not with that thing out there!" The one guard said. "What? You mean the big cat creature that's been lurking around this cavern and taking out our troops for the past 3 days? I don't believe it exists." The second guard scoffed.

There's been a rumor that a big cat creature has been attacking every guard and goon Blakk stationed at Nightmare Ridge. Apparently, they were true. A pair of gold eyes watched the guards from the shadows.

The one guard was still feeling shaky. "What's that?! I heard something over there!" He panicked, drawing his blaster. "Will you calm down? We're the only ones out here." The second guard assured, not noticing the first guard getting pounced by a flash of grayish-silver. When the second guard sensed how quiet it got, he turned to see his partner gone. "Brody?" He called. He drew his blaster and went to investigate. He turned a corner, finding the first guard's body. "Brody!" He ran over and inspected the body. Luckily, the guard was only unconscious. Just then, there was a low growl. "Who's there?!" The guard asked, aiming into the shadow. The pair of gold eyes opened in the shadows, growling. The guard started to hyperventilate as the creature moved towards him. Then the creature pounced, causing the guard to scream.

The Shane Gang sat around their training grounds as Eli and Aerona prepared to spar. "Fair warning. I'm not gonna go easy just because you're a girl." Eli said. "Who said anything about taking it easy? Nothing is ever taken easy." Aerona said. "Maybe. But it's easy to do this!" Eli said, drawing his blaster and slinging Torch. Aerona just smiled as Torch attacked with Forgestrike. She flipped to the side, dodging the attack. Then she slung her Hop Rock, Bomb. Eli flipped over the Hop Rock and slung Buzzsaw. Aerona countered by slinging her Rammstone, Slabs. Buzzsaw spun with Throttlebite and Slabs threw a punch. The attacks collided, knocking them both down.

"Wow. I never knew Aerona was that good." Fareeda said. "She's certainly giving Eli a run for his money." Mario said. "I don't think even I could get a shot in on her." Kord said. "Trust us. If we know our sister, she has a few other surprises for your leader." Kala said. "Yeah? Well, so does Eli." Trixie said.

Eli slung Rocks, firing Scrapnel. Aerona dodged by backflipping onto a nearby rock. "Sorry, Aerona. But there's no way you can beat me." Eli said. "Oh, is that right?" Aerona asked. Her slugs chittered. "Then let's see how you deal with this." She said. She loaded Goldie and slung her into the air. Then she took a deep breath, closed her eyes and started to move like a martial artist. Goldie started to move along with her slinger's movements. The others were confused as to what she was doing. Eli was confused, but loaded and slung Rammer. Aerona thrusted her palm forward and Goldie fired with Goldray, hitting Rammer and turning him to gold. "Rammer!" Eli cried.

The gang gasped at what happened. "What was that?!" Lash asked in shock. "How did she do that?" Vance asked. "She just started moving her arms and it was like Goldie was matching her movements." Kord said. Shimei just stared with shock. "I think I've seen that before. But where?" She asked herself.

Aerona re-slung Goldie, reversing the effects of her Goldray on Rammer. "You okay, Rammer?" Eli asked, picking up his slug. Rammer chittered and nodded. "That's a relief. But how did you do that?" Eli asked. "I don't actually remember what it's called. Our grandfather taught it to us when we were 11." Aerona said.

Just then, the gang received a call. "Bad news! We got a distress call from Wuxi Cavern! Twist, Deagan, Locke and Load are attacking!" Kord said. "Saddle up!" Eli said.

The gang rode their mechas into Wuxi Cavern. They saw dozens of Blakk's goons slinging their ghouls across the cavern. But of course, someone was fighting back. A Hop Rock was slung, knocking a few goons back. "Who slung that Hop Rock?" Kord asked. "Look!" Harley called, pointing down at the slinger taking cover behind some rocks. "Isn't that André Geyser?" Trixie asked. "The adventuring slinger who nearly turned Pronto into a mole-tossed salad at Monarch Inn?!" Pronto asked in shock. "He must've sent the distress call! We've got to help!" Eli said. "What?! Need I remind you that André was working with a surface obsessed madman?!" Pronto asked. "It was just business, Pronto. Nothing personal." Harley said. Pronto felt unsure, but agreed nonetheless.

The gang charged into battle, slinging their slugs. Kord slung Roller, slamming through a Grimmstone and a Thrasher. Lash slung his new Vinedrill, Sprout, hitting a couple of goons with Itchypants. "Oh geez!" "Scratching!" The goons cried, scratching themselves. Just then, Lash found himself at blaster-point by Load. "Say goodbye, little Lash." Load chuckled. Dana leapt in and slung Nemo, blasting Load with Aquajet. "Oh! Why am I taking a shower at this time of the day for?" Load asked. Just then, Dana slung her new Rammstone, Richter, knocking Load out with a punch.

Kala slung Sparkly, distracting a few goons with Arcalyte. "So, we meet again." Twist's voice came. Kala turned to see the face of Lash's treacherous brother. "You up for a rematch, Garcia?" Twist asked daringly. "I don't know. Think you can keep up with me?" Kala asked, flirtingly. "Oh, we'll see. But let's see if you can keep up with me." Twist said, readying Loki's barrel. Kala readied Aurum's barrel. "Dazzle her, Loki!" Twist said, slinging Loki into the air. But as Loki transformed, Kala slung Aurum, encasing Loki into a gold statue with Goldray. "LOKI!" Twist cried as his golden Smugglet landed on the ground. "You change him back right now!" He demanded. But Kala just slung Aries, knocking Twist out. "Not happening, hon." She said.

Harley leapt off Delta and slung Smelly, wrecking Locke's sense of smell with Blorfball. "OH! That is just nasty!" Locke cried, holding his nose before passing out. "SHANE!" Deagan's voice shouted. Harley turned to see Dana's obsessive brother stomping his way pass the goons towards him. "You stole my Infurnus from me and I want it back!" He demanded. "Oh no. That's not happening." Harley refused. "Then I'll just take it back MYSELF!" Deagan shouted, slinging a Briardrill. Harley ducked out of the way as the ghoul hit the ground and unleashed Briarsnipe, nearly ensnaring him. "Think you can get the drop on me, do you? Well, the only thing you've got is hot feet!" He said, slinging Matchstick and hitting Deagan's boots with Blastburst. Deagan squirmed and put out the flames. "I'll have my Infurnus back, Shane. Even if I have to take it off your corpse!" He cursed, taking aim. But suddenly, his blaster was knocked out of his hand by a Thresher. Harley and Deagan turned to see Paulina holding up her blaster. "This Infurnus obsession has to stop, Deagan. If it continues, you'll end up in a terrible situation." Paulina said. "NO! The Infurnus rightfully belongs to me!" Deagan shouted, rolling over to his blaster. "And it was your fault stealing my Infurnus the first time we dueled!" "You don't deserve an Infurnus. The Infurnuses rightfully belong to the protectors of each set of caverns." Paulina said. "ARGH! Where am I, in Crazytown?! I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR NONSENSE!" Deagan screamed in anger, taking aim with his blaster. But Paulina, being as quick as her sisters, fired first. She slung Chrysos. The Midas slug blew Golden Duststorm, blowing Deagan into the cavern wall and knocking him out.

Locke managed to recover from the stink attack and hustled over to Twist, who was holding his golden Loki. "I think it's best we retreat, Mr. Twist. We're getting out slugged here!" He suggested. Twist looked at the battlefield. The Shane Gang was gaining the upper hand on their goons. Trixie slung Spider, catching a Hop Jack in her web. Vance slung Blast, launching Scrapnel at the goons. Twist groaned with frustration. "Everyone! Pull back!" He called. Load picked up Deagan and the goons all retreated on their mechas and rode out of the cavern.

Afterwards, the gang recovered from all the craziness and spoke with André. "I thank you all for the assistance. I would've been a goner if you hadn't come along." André said. He then noticed the Garcia Quadruplets. "I see you have new friends, Shane." "Yep. André Geyser, these are Aerona, Fareeda, Kala and Paulina Garcia." Eli introduced. "Garcia? Are you 4 any chance related to Cilan Garcia?" André asked. "Yes. He's our father. You know him?" Fareeda asked. "I knew him back when he was helping the Shanes protect Slugterra. But back then, I used to work for Blakk." André revealed. "Get out! You used to work for Blakk?!" Pronto asked in shock. "Yes. Way before I worked for Gar Revelle." André said. The gang was shocked to hear this. "Allow me to explain." André said as he began to tell a story.

[Flashback]

"It all started back when Blakk and I used to work for the infamous crime lord, Viggo Dare." A younger Blakk and a patchless André stood by crime lord Viggo Dare, striking fear into the cavern civilians. "Not long after, Blakk drove Viggo out of town and took over. Soon after, we came into confrontation with Will Shane and Cilan Garcia." Blakk and his crew, including André, were engaged in a duel with Will Shane and Cilan Garcia. "In the midst of the duel, a Hop Rock's Scrapnel attack took my eye." A Hop Rock launched a Scrapnel attack, one of them hitting André in the eye.

"Blakk and his followers escaped, but left me behind to succumb to my injuries." Cilan walked up to André, offering his hand. "Cilan Garcia came up to me and offered his help." At the Shane hideout, Cilan treated André's injury. "He treated my injury and outfitted me with the eyepatch. It was right there he made me a better offer." André looked in the mirror as Cilan put on an eyepatch. "Why do you even work for Dr. Blakk? You know he doesn't care about you. If he did, he wouldn't have left you behind." Cilan said. "He's right. This is an opportunity to start fresh. Do what you want to do with your life." Will agreed. "It was right then and there that I decided to become the world-class adventurer everyone knows today. And to that day, I considered Will Shane and Cilan Garcia great allies. And true friends." André shook hands with Will and Cilan.

[Flashback End]

As André finished the story, the gang was in total awe. Especially the Garcias. "Wow. We knew our father had a knack for making friends, but he never told us this." Paulina said. "Where have I heard that song before?" Harley asked. "Touché." Aerona said.

Afterwards, André said goodbye to the gang and left Wuxi Cavern on his mecha beast. "So, what's next?" Pronto asked. Before anyone could answer, Trixie received a message on her tablet. She opened it and read the message. "What's up, Trix?" Eli asked. "Report from Nightmare Ridge. A mysterious cat creature has been lurking around and terrorizing Blakk's guards for 3 days." Trixie read. "Mysterious cat creature? Sounds familiar for some reason." Harley said. "Also sounds like our next big mission. Let's mount up and head back for Nightmare Ridge." Eli said.

Soon enough, the gang arrived in Nightmare Ridge. "Never thought I'd have to see this place again." Trixie said. "Alright guys, keep your guard up. We don't want that cat creature getting the drop on us." Eli said. The gang drew their blasters and brought up their guard. Unknown to them, the same pair of gold eyes was watching them from the shadows above.

As the gang continued to trek through the spooky cavern, Harley heard some distant chatter. "I hear something." He said. "Where?" Eli asked. Harley pointed straight ahead. The gang peeked out from some trees and saw Nacho and a group of Blakk guards. "Listen up! These constant cat creature attacks are becoming bad for business. And I for one have had enough! Spread out and look for it! And when you find it, get rid of it!" Nacho said darkly. The guards nodded while shaking with fear. Apparently, they were afraid of the cat creature. The gang heard everything. "Okay. New plan. We have to find the cat creature before they do." Eli said. "Then we'd better do it fast." Kord said.

As the gang searched for the cat creature, Paulina started to feel scared from being in this creepy cavern. "I don't like this place. It's very scary and creepy." She said, feeling tears build up in her eyes. Aerona pulled up and comforted her sister. "It's okay, Paulina. Just as long as you don't get separated, you'll be fine." She said. Harley overheard this and rode up to Fareeda. "Hey Fareeda, why's Paulina so scared?" He asked. "Paulina hates dark creepy places like this one. Because she always ends up getting lost. She's been like that since we were young." Fareeda explained. "We do our best to keep Paulina safe because she doesn't want to be alone. Before she died, our mother taught us to stay together as our sisterly bond gives us our strength. It's because that we love each other so much that our bond is impossible to break." The gang awed at what Fareeda said.

Just then, something caught Shimei's eyes. She saw a swift of movement in the foliage. "Hold up! I saw something!" She said. The gang stopped in their tracks and readied their blasters. "Keep your guard up. We don't know where this thing will attack from." Eli said. Pronto however was shaking like a leaf. Just then, he saw a pair of gold eyes appear in the shadows. He shrieked, leaping off Fernando and landing in Kord's arms. "Pronto! What's wrong with you?!" The cave troll asked in annoyance. "There's something over there!" Pronto cried, pointing to where he saw the eyes. But the eyes were already gone. "There's nothing over there. Pronto, you can be a pain sometimes!" Harley scolded.

Eli shook his head. Just then, blasters were being fired. Eli looked to the right. Several ghouls transformed and were heading right for them. "Take cover!" Eli shouted. The gang ducked for cover as Nacho and his goons charged towards them.

Eli dived behind a boulder and loaded a barrel. Eliza slung her Tormato, Oya, blowing a couple of Hop Jacks back with Gaelstorm. The explosions from when they hit the ground sent a couple of guards flying.

As the battle began, the cat creature was watching from afar. Its eyes were fixed on Eli, Harley and Eliza, like it knew them. Eli slung Mucky. But Nacho swatted the poor slug aside and slung a Grimmstone, knocking Eli off his feet. The cat creature's eyes widened at this. Then it growled in anger.

Nacho chuckled as he prepared his blaster to finish Eli off. Just then, a huge roar interrupted the battle. "What was that?!" Pronto asked in a whimper. "I don't know. But it sure scaring them." Kala said, pointing to Nacho's guards. They were shaking like leaves for they knew that roar. Just then, the cat creature leapt out of the shadows and pounced onto Nacho, saving Eli. Everyone was stunned by this sudden appearance. "What is that thing?!" Dana asked. "It can't be! That's a Zesherian! But they're supposed to be extinct!" Trixie said.

The Zesherian pinned Nacho down with one big paw and growled dangerously at him, baring it's sharp teeth. Nacho growled back and tried to shoot the beast. But the Zesherian grabbed the blaster in it's mouth and crushed it between it's jaws. Enraged, Nacho managed to push the Zesherian off with his feet. He then stood up, ran towards the Zesherian and prepared to throw a punch. But the Zesherian, being the quicker creature, dodged Nacho's punch and released a powerful sonic roar, sending Nacho flying before landing on the ground hard. "Whoa! Now that's quite a voice!" Kord exclaimed.

Nacho recovered and started to stand up. But then, he looked on in horror. The Zesherian ran towards him with incredible speed and leapt towards him, unsheathing it's claws. It slashed an X with it's claws on Nacho's chest. Nacho clutched his wound as blood began to ooze and trinkle down his hand. He glared at the gang and the beast. "Fall back! Retreat!" He commanded, running away. The guards followed, screaming like the cowards they always were.

The Zesherian snarled loudly at the villains as they ran away. Then it turned its attention to the gang, looking directly at Eli. It approached the young Shane while Eli just looked as if he seemingly recognized this cat beast. Kord was about to draw his blaster, but Kala blocked him with her staff blaster. "Don't shoot the cat." She mouthed silently. Kord slowly withdrew his hand, getting the message.

When the Zesherian got close enough to Eli, it tilted its head. Eli copied the cat's action. Upon straightening their heads, Eli slowly held out his hand and gently touched the cat's face. Eli's eyes suddenly went white like Harley's did and was shown a vision.

[Vision]

Eli and Harley at age 5 were playing with a little cat they called Bella. Harley tossed Eli a ball of yarn, only to have Bella pounce him and take the ball. Eli laughed as Bella licked him afterwards.

[Vision End]

Eli panted out as the vision ended. Then he looked at the Zesherian in shock, realizing that this cat beast was their long-lost pet. Emotionally, Eli hugged Bella and she hugs back, purring. The gang approached them as Eli sniffed with tears. "You okay, Eli?" Trixie asked. Eli broke the hug and turned to the gang. "Guys, this Zesherian is our long-lost pet, Bella." He revealed. Harley and Eliza were in shock from hearing their long-lost pet's name. Harley walked towards Bella and looked right at her. "Bella? Is it really you?" He asked. As an answer, Bella came up and nuzzled Harley's legs. Harley got all emotional, knelt down and hugged Bella. She returned the hug with licks of affection. Eliza shed tears of joy. "We're so happy to see you again, Bella. I barely recognized you after so long." She said, petting Bella's head. Bella purred affectionately in return.

Afterwards, the gang returned to the hideout with Bella. They all sat around the living room as Eli, Harley and Eliza told the story of how they met Bella. "Harley and I met Bella 10 years ago. We found her when she was little." Eli explained. "We took her in and raised her." "One day, a robber broke into our house. Bella sprung into action and attacked him. She managed to scare him away, but she left some bite and claw marks from her attack." Harley said. "Bella's been with us for a month. But one day, she disappeared. We were very heartbroken. Especially Eli and Harley." Eliza said. "We hadn't seen her for 10 years. Until now." Eli finished. The gang was both amazed and saddened by this story. "I think I know why Bella disappeared. Bella's wild instincts made her return here to Slugterra. That's why you haven't seen her for 10 years." Aerona said.

Eli, Harley and Eliza looked at Bella, who had just met Wormy, Rath, the lava bats, Kibble and Nipper. Bella was at ease and immediately got along with them as they started to play together, along with Burpy, Hestia and the other slugs. "You know, Zesherians were expert hunters. One of the smartest species in Slugterra. But then they went extinct because they were targeted by hunters. They hunted down every last Zesherian as their prize due to how rare they are. For all we know, Bella is the last of her kind." Trixie explained. "Which means she'll be a number one target of every hunter and collector in all of Slugterra." Pronto said with drama. "Well, we're not gonna let them touch her. Not after 10 long years of separation." Eli said, watching as Bella played with her new friends.

Later, Aerona met with Eli, Harley and Eliza in their room. "So, what is it you wanted to give us, Aerona?" Eli asked. "This." Aerona said, holding out an old maroon scarf. The Shanes gasped, recognising the scarf. "That's my mother's scarf! Why is it with you?" Eliza asked. "Before she passed away, Xantara gave it to me and asked me to give it to you guys as a memento of her." Aerona said as she handed the scarf to Eliza.

Eliza stared at the scarf as her tears threatened to fall. "I remember when I was a little girl, my mother used the scarf as a blanket to keep me warm." She said as her tears fell. The brothers remembered that too, since their grandmother wore it as a shawl. "She would comfort us by putting it on me or Harley when we were upset." Eli said. "She also used to sing the lullaby song, Legend is Found." Harley said, shedding a single tear. "Thank you for giving us the scarf, Aerona. We will treasure it forever." Eliza said. "You're welcome." Aerona said.

Just then, as Eli touched the scarf, he was shown another vision.

[Vision]

There were people in clothes he had never seen before, living in an unknown peaceful cavern.

A pure white bird that strongly resembles a mystical firebird flew across the unknown cavern with such grace.

5 slugs he had never seen before stood before him. 4 of them resembled a Tazerling, a Vinedrill, a Frostcrawler and a Flatulorhinkus. The 5th one was unfamiliar and resembled a wizard.

Just then, there was a beautiful siren voice of a woman.

[Vision End]

Eli regained his sight, leaving him in disbelief at what he saw. "Hey. You okay there, Eli? You spaced out." Harley asked. "I'm fine!" Eli replied quickly. 'I wonder what that vision meant? And what kind of slugs were those? And where did that voice come from?' He thought.

Later that night, Eli sat down to continue reading the book, starting on page 7. 'In the ocean depths, lies the Water Spirit. It merges as one with the ocean. It can manifest in any of the caverns' water environments. The Water Spirit possesses the power to purify polluted waters by its touch. However, when the Water Spirit is threatened by mortals, it unleashes a tsunami to wash everything out and drowns the mortals.'

Eli turned to the 8th page. It showed a picture of the Water Spirit. A four-legged sea dragon made completely out of water, standing on the ocean surface. There was a title written on the bottom of the picture. 'The Bakunawa.'

Eli then looked at the 9th page. It was another picture of the Water Spirit running across the ocean with someone riding on its back. "It's the same as the Fire Spirit. But who is this guy?" Eli asked himself.

Eli turned to the 10th page. 'Mortals can feel the gentle breeze, but the wind itself has its own free will; the Wind Spirit. A playful spirit who loves to play with young mortals with its strong yet gentle winds to carry them. When mortals hear the spirit's bird-like whistle, it means the Wind Spirit is there, watching them. When angered, it creates a massive tornado to blow everything away.'

Eli looked at the 11th page. It showed a picture of the Wind Spirit as a gust of wind with leaves around it. Like the Water Spirit, there was a title under the picture. 'The Gale.'

Eli turned to the 12th page. It showed another picture of the Wind Spirit, but with a child as it carries him with its breeze in a playful way.

Eli then looked at the 13th page. 'Surrounded by the earth around their surroundings, the Earth Spirits lived in peace and harmony with mortals. They are big yet gentle giants. But when enraged, the Earth Spirits will cause devastating earthquakes and landslides.'

Eli turned to the 14th page. It showed a picture of the Earth Spirits as giant mountain-sized ogres made entirely out of rocks and stones with moss all over their bodies. The expressions on their faces shown aggression. The title written below the picture. 'The Earth Ogres.'

Eli then looked at the 15th page. It was another picture of the Earth Spirits, but one of them was holding someone in it's hand.

Eli closed the book and set it down on the table. He then got up and walked to the window. 'Whoever these first protectors were, I wonder if they're still around. But where?' He thought, wondering what might be out there.

Well, how about that for a surprise? Eli, Harley and Eliza reunite with their long-lost pet, Bella the Zesherian, the Garcia sisters learn about their father from André Geyser and Eli reads more about the First Protectors. What other surprises await our heroes? Leave a review if you want.
