Chapter 44: The Prince of the Shadows
In the Dark Periphery, a slug hunter was running for his life from something. He hid behind a wall, panting for breath and sweating heavily. He peaked out from the corner, seeing if he was still being followed. Just then, a silhouetted creature appeared. The hunter jolted back and drew his blaster, hoping the creature didn't see him. The creature sniffed the air and looked to the left, catching the scent. The hunter panted, holding his blaster close. Just then, dust and pebbles fell from the top of the wall. The hunter slowly moved his gaze up. Then the creature surprised him, screeching at him. The hunter screamed and started running again. The creature chased after him.
The hunter ran as fast as he could. But then he tripped on something and fell to the ground. He turned and saw the creature slowly moving towards him. "No! Please! I've done nothing wrong! Don't hurt me!" The hunter begged. The creature remained silent and loomed over the poor hunter. The hunter raised his blaster and slung a Phosphoro, lighting the place up with Flashbang. The creature was revealed to be a teenage boy with long messy hair, covered in Shadow Clan markings, wearing nothing but a loincloth. Then the boy started hissing. "You harm slugs, you perish!" He hissed in Shadow Clan language. The hunter was shocked to hear that the boy speaks in the tongue of the Shadow Clan. The boy then screeched and lunged for the hunter. The hunter's screams echoed throughout the entire Periphery.

Dana was training hard in the training area. She slung Nemo, blasting a couple targets with Aquajet. She slung Webby, swinging on her web towards several more targets. She then slung her new Grenuke, Frags. His tail sizzled into his body and he blew up, taking out the targets. Dana dropped down in the middle of what was left, panting heavily. Webby chittered with concern for her slinger. "I'm fine, Webby. Just needed to let off some steam." Dana assured.
"That's not what it looked like to us." A voice said. Dana turned and saw Eliza and Paulina coming into view. "Something's been on your mind for the last couple of days, Dana. What's going on?" Eliza asked. Dana sighed as she wiped the sweat from her forehead. "My mind's been on Deagan for some time. At one point, I'm still angry and traumatized from when he betrayed me. But on the other hand, I'm scared for him with Harley's vison of his possible upcoming death." She explained. "That's why I've been training so hard. To try and take my mind off it." Eliza walked over and put a comforting hand around her adopted daughter. "Don't think too hard on it, Dana. Remember, there's still a chance we can change that future." She assured. "She's right. Remember, he was frightened when I told him that obsession is death." Paulina said. Webby chittered in agreement. Dana smiled at this, knowing her new family was always right.
"Girls!" Eli called. The 4 turned and saw him and Harley ran towards them. "What is it, boys?" Eliza asked. "We just received a report. Slug hunters are going missing in the Dark Periphery." Eli explained. "The Dark Periphery? But that's Shadow Clan territory. Why would hunters go there?" Paulina asked. "Don't know. But we need to find out what's going on." Harley said. The girls nodded to each other.
The gang arrived at the Dark Periphery and started looking for any signs of slug hunters. "This place really gives Pronto the creepies. I shouldn't have had so much stewed scorpbeetle spleen for breakfast." Pronto said. "If you so much as break a single wind, I will never forgive you." Harley said. "But you have to admit, he's right about this place being creepy." Fareeda said. Little did the gang know, the boy watched them from afar atop a branch with interest. More especially Dana, feeling like he seen her before. But knowing the laws of the Shadow Clan, he figured the gang to be slug hunters like all the rest.
As the gang continued to look through the Dark Periphery, Lash saw something on the ground ahead. "What's that?" He asked, pointing to it. The gang looked ahead as Lash dismounted Jack and walked towards the object. He picked it up, revealing that it was a blaster. "It's a blaster. It must've belonged to one of the hunters." He said. "But where's the hunter who owns it?" Kord asked. "Wherever he is, it must've got him." Mario said. "'It'?" Dana asked as everyone looked at him. "There's been rumors going around the caverns of a creature that was raised by the Shadow Clan. They call him the Prince of the Shadows." Mario explained. "Prince of the Shadows? But what is he really?" Trixie asked. "Don't know. Nobody's ever really seen him. But whatever he is, since he was raised by the Shadow Clan, he's just as dangerous." Mario said.
Just then, Harley heard a wood cracking noise. He looked up just as the boy leapt down and attacked. Harley managed to move out of the way as the boy landed. The gang quickly drew their blasters and took aim. "I take it this is the Prince of the Shadows?" Eli guessed. "I suppose so." Mario said. The boy started hissing in Shadow Clan language. "Is that boy speaking in Shadow Clan language?" Eliza asked. "Seems like it." Eli said as he and Harley put on their Shadow Talkers and the Garcias put on their Shadow Earpieces. "You are trespassing on Shadow Clan territory! Leave now!" The boy said. Trixie, Shimei and Dana were actually frozen in awe at the boy's sudden handsomeness. Trixie and Shimei mentally slapped themselves, remembering Eli and Lash.
Just then, the Shadow Clan appeared before everyone. "Rune! Stop what you're doing! Let them go!" The chief said. "No, father! They're trespassing on our lands! Therefore, we must destroy them like everyone else who dares to desecrate the Dark Periphery!" The boy argued. "Father?!" Eli, Harley and the Garicas gasped. "Father?!" The rest of the gang gasped. "Rune, these boys are the sons of Will Shane. And the 4 girls are the daughters of Cilan Garcia." The chief revealed. The boy's eyes widened at the mention of those names. Then he looked at the gang, then back at the chief. "And the others?" He asked. "They are their friends. Their gang." The chief said. The boy now lowered his head shamefully.
Eli stepped forth. "Excuse me, but we couldn't help but hear this boy call you father." He said. "Apologies, son of Shane. This is my son, Rune." The chief introduced. "You're son?!" Eli asked in shock. "Come. We will explain as we perform our ceremony." The chief said. "Ceremony? What ceremony?" Harley asked. "The ceremony we performed when you passed through our territory the first time." The chief said.
Meanwhile, Nacho prepared an army of Blakk's guards, along with Locke and Load, Jon Bull, CC, Shockwire, the Power Trips, Krusher, Frost, Flame, Stalker and the Gentleman. "Now remember, the Shadow Clan are the only other threat besides the Shane Gang that will be a major threat to my master's plan. We take out the Shadow Clan, then the Shane Gang will be a minor annoyance." Nacho explained. "But what about Twist and Deagan? Aren't they coming too, boss?" Jon Bull asked. "They're still recuperating from their last failure." Nacho explained.
Twist and Deagan sat in their shared bunker, battered and bruised. Twist's left arm was in a sling. Deagan had a cast on his right leg and held a bag of ice on his bandaged head. "I hate Nacho." Twist groaned. "Me too, dude." Deagan agreed.
"Now enough with the questions! Today, we end the existence of the Shadow Clan once and for all!" Nacho yelled. The guards shouted, ready for a fight.
The Shadow Clan brought the Shane Gang to their ceremonial sight. "Are you sure we should be here for this? I mean, aren't outsiders forbidden to experience anything involving the Shadow Clan?" Eli asked, feeling unsure of being here. "We've trusted your father with our secrets. And we trust you and your friends. And it will be a good chance for you to know Rune's history. Of how he came to be one of us." The chief explained. "Sounds like a hoot." Harley said.
The gang sat down as the Shadow Clan took their position. The chief stood up on the top rock and brought up 2 slugs in both hands, a Grenuke and a Slyren. He held them both up and gave a loud screech. Both slugs started to glow with their energy. The rest of Shadow Clan and Rune did the same with their slugs. The gang's slugs started glowing from their barrels while Burpy, Hestia, Bluster, Bludgeon, Stinky, Ricochet, Scourge, Webby and the Garcias' Midas slugs glowed from their shoulders. "Wow! When you boys told me about this happening the first-time you guys came through this place, you weren't kidding." Eliza said. "Now the question remains, why do they do this?" Kord asked. The Shadow Clan finally stopped screeching and the slugs' glow slowly dimmed down. The gang stood up and walked towards the chief as he got down from the rock. "You wish to know why we perform this ceremony?" The chief guessed. "Yes." Eli said as Harley and the Garcias nodded. "We perform this ceremony to share our energy with the slugs." The chief began. "As you learned from your cave troll friend, we all share the same energy with the slugs. Humans, cave trolls, molenoids, amphibanoids, and even the Shadow Clan. We perform our ceremony for when our slugs become weak for battle." Eli understood, considering from what he and the others went up against from the Deep Caverns.
The gang, the chief and Rune all sat around a campfire as the chief started to tell Rune's story. "It all started 17 years ago. We found Rune as an infant. We took him in and raised him as one of our own. When he turned 5, I taught him everything we know about the slugs and our technology. Thus, we taught him to use a Shadow Walker so he can pass through the shadows like us." Rune brought out his Shadow Walker, showing the gang. "Ever since, we've isolated Rune from civilization. Never made any connections with humans. His only connections were with the Shadow Clan and his slugs, his family. As the years passed, at age 12, Rune met Will Shane and Cilan Garcia. They were the first humans to ever interact with Rune." "He knew our fathers?" Harley asked, surprising everyone. The chief nodded. "Will Shane and Cilan Garcia taught Rune a few things. Even how to speak human." That surprised Eli and Harley. They took off their Shadow Talkers and the Garcias took off their Shadow Earpieces. Everyone turned to Rune. "It's true. Your fathers taught me to speak English." He said in human language, making everyone gasp.
"Rune became close to Will Shane and Cilan Garcia. In time, Rune saw them as father figures rather than friends." The chief explained. Eli, Harley and the Garcias looked at Rune. "At some time, Rune witnessed the duel between Will Shane and Tom Por, Dana's father, while he was hidden in the shadows." Paulina whispered what the chief said to Dana about her father, surprising her. "And now, after 5 years, Rune was being sighted by many people and began to spread about him, calling him 'the Prince of the Shadows.' A rumor that has brought slug hunters into our borders." The chief finished.
Dana's thoughts went to Deagan and their father, sighing sadly. "Excuse me." She said, getting up to leave. The gang watched with sad hearts as she left. "What's wrong with her?" Rune asked. "Dana's had it rough like everyone else in this gang." Kord said. "Yes. After she lost her father, her own brother, Deagan, betrayed her to Dr. Blakk." Pronto said. "Betrayed her? Why? What for?" Rune asked. "He wanted Burpy. He was completely obsessed. He was willing to do anything to get Burpy." Eli explained. "Dana was really heartbroken. Afterwards she joined our gang and Eliza adopted her as her daughter." Trixie said. "That's really sad." Rune said. "Everyone in this gang lost someone very close to them. But that's what makes us more than a team. It makes us a family." Eli said. Rune looked at the others, who nodded in agreement. He then looked to where Dana went. "I'll be back." He said, getting up to walk after Dana.
Dana sat on the edge of a cliff, looking out over the Dark Periphery. Webby chittered with concern for her. "I'm okay, Webby. I just needed some space to think." Dana assured. "You must need a lot of space if you needed to think about your past." Rune said, surprising Dana. "Oh, Rune. You surprised me." Dana said. "Mind if I join you?" Rune asked. "Sure. I could use the company. Other than Webby." Dana said. Webby chittered as if she was insulted. "I was kidding. You know I love you, Webby." Dana said. Webby cooed and hopped back into her barrel. Rune sat down beside Dana. "So, your friends told me about Deagan." Rune said. Dana looked at him. "Must've been hard, being betrayed by your own flesh and blood." Rune said. "Yeah. It was. It really broke my heart." Dana said. Rune put a comforting hand on her shoulder. Dana smiled, blushing. Rune smiled back. "So, Paulina told me that the chief said you saw the duel between Will Shane and my father." Dana said. "Yeah, I did. I watched it all from the shadows." Rune said. "What happened?" Dana asked. Rune sighed. "It was a freaking mess. Your father was so angry when he found out Will Shane was working with us. He just took out his blaster and challenged Will to a duel. When the slugs started slinging, I've never felt so scared. Will slung a Rammstone, sending your father into a tree, dislocating his shoulder. Will offered to help, but your father said he didn't need help from the enemy. So, he got up and left. There was nothing I could do." He explained. Dana, feeling more heartbroken hearing this, put her hand on Rune's. Rune felt this and looked at Dana, who smiled at him. He smiled back. They turned their attention back to the Dark Periphery. Dana put her head on Rune's shoulder.
Meanwhile, back at the campsite, the chief noticed Harley's scarf. He started speaking in his language. Eli and Harley noticed this and put on their Shadow Talkers. "Your scarf. It belonged to the people of the South, passed down for generations. It holds many secrets." The chief said. The brothers looked at their grandmother's scarf, wondering what secrets the chief spoke of. "Sons of Shane, would you allow me to look at the scarf? There's something you 2 should see." The chief asked. The brothers felt hesitant to do so. But if there was something about the scarf that they don't know about, they knew that they had no choice. Harley unwrapped the scarf from around his neck and handed it to the chief. The chief then showed the brothers what he found. On the corner of the scarf were the exact symbols from the cover of their book.
Eli was surprised to see that the symbols on the scarf were the exact same ones on the cover of his book. He started to get the feeling that his grandmother's scarf might be connected to the First Protectors. "Excuse me, but do you know about the First Protectors of Slugterra?" He asked. The chief went silent for a while, surprised at Eli mentioning this. "Yes, I do know about the First Protectors. They were the first beings to be even born in Slugterra, long before any other species." He said. Eli and Harley were surprised to hear this. "The First Protectors were also known as the True Protectors of Slugterra. For each of them hold power of the primordial elements. They protected Slugterra from any threat. Years ago, the First Protectors helped the Shadow Clan defeat the Darkbane and seal them within the Deep Caverns. The First Protectors were the most powerful beings that ever existed." The chief explained. The brothers were in awe from hearing this.
Eli was about to ask another question, but he was cut off by an explosion in the distance. The gang looked to see Nacho standing on a hill, riding his mecha beast and smirking evilly.
Nacho's army rode their mechas down the hill, firing their ghouls at the Shadow Clan. The chief shrieked out and the Shadow Clan charged to engage the enemy. One scout took a Rammstone in its tail and threw it at one of the goons, knocking him off his mecha. Nacho smirked, knowing what to do. "NOW!" He shouted. The elites loaded their blasters and slung a barrage of Photomos, lighting the place up with Blightsource. The Shadow Clan screeched and stopped in their tracks. 3 more goons slung 3 Briardrills, snagging a few scouts with Briarsnipe.
"Those Photomos are spooking the Shadow Clan! This happened while you guys were at the Lightwell!" Trixie said. "We gotta help the Shadow Clan! Go for the Photomos!" Eli called, slinging Suds. But then, a Thrasher came out of nowhere and slashed Suds away with Knawblade. Eli glared at who slung that ghoul. CC. "You think we're that dumb to let you try that a second time?" CC asked mockingly. Krusher roared and slung a Hop Jack. The gang broke off as the ghoul it the ground. Kord slung Jetstream, blasting a couple goons with Aquajet. Locke and Load slung a pair of Attacknets. Mario countered with his new Thresher, Boomerang, cutting through the webs and knocking the ghouls down with Throttlebite.
As the Shadow Clan cowered at the Dark Light, Nacho continued to sling his ghouls at them. But just as he slung a Greneater, a Rammstone came out of nowhere and knocked the ghoul down. Nacho turned to see Rune and Dana swinging down on Webby's web. "Dana! Glad you could join us." Eli said. "Thanks. Rune and I really had a nice moment together. But I'm glad we got here when we did." Dana said, slinging Rosie and hitting the goons with Itchypants.
Rune and Nacho had confronted each other. "I'm gonna make you pay for what you've done to my family, Darkbane filth." Rune hissed. "Heh. You may be raised by the Shadow Clan, but you're no match for me." Nacho said. "Maybe, but I've trained enough to handle a challenge." Rune said, readying his Shadow Walker and his own slugs. "Bring it on." Nacho grinned, preparing his blaster. Rune made the first move and tossed a Grenuke. Nacho dodged the slug and slung an Attacknet. Rune quickly swipe threw a Rammstone, delivering an uppercut to the ghoul and firing Rockstorm. Nacho got pushed back by the attack but he was far from beaten. Rune was about to throw a Dirt Urchin, but Nacho was quicker. He slung a Barreto, wrapping Rune's arm around a tree. Then Nacho slung a Harmashelt, bashing Rune hard.
Meanwhile, back in the battle, the gang were getting hammered by army. "You're about to regret turning down my offer for a date, Garcia!" CC said, firing another ghoul. "What do we do now?" Pronto asked. "It's okay, guys. We'll take them. You girls ready?" Aerona asked as she loaded another barrel in her blaster. Fareeda, Kala and Paulina nodded as they loaded their blasters. "Let's go!" The girls popped out, slung their slugs and performed their martial arts. Aerona slung Cancer, commanding her to bash into several guards. Fareeda slung X, commanding him to fry several of the goons' blasters with several blasts of Blasterhack. Kala slung Gemini, commanding him to trip several goons. And Paulina slung Virgo, commanding her to lash at them with Vinelash. The 4 slugs returned to their rightful slingers. "Excellent work, sisters. As usual." Aerona said.
Nacho loomed over Rune. He loaded another barrel into his blaster and took aim at Rune. "Goodbye, Prince of the Shadows." He said with a wicked grin. Just then, a Polero knocked the blaster out of his hand. "WHAT?!" He looked to see Dana with her blaster smoking. "Get away from him." She warned. "Or what?" Nacho asked, not feeling threatened. "Or you'll have to deal with them." Dana said. Nacho was confused. Just then, he turned to see several Shadow Clan scouts, along with the chief, charging towards him. "Quickly! Fire more Photomos!" Nacho ordered. Jon Bull, CC and the others fired more Photomos into the air, lighting everything with Blightsource. But to their shock, the Shadow Clan just kept charging. "What's going on?!" Nacho asked. "I don't know! The Dark Light should've scared them off!" CC said. The Shadow Clan started tossing their own slugs at them. A Hop Rock knocked a couple goons off their feet. 3 more ducked to dodge a Dirt Urchin's Chortlesnort. "OKAY, THAT'S IT! I'M OUT OF HERE!" Flame cried, running for his life. The others joined him and retreated.
"STOP! COME BACK HERE!" Nacho barked. But nobody listened. They all just mounted their mecha beasts and took off. "It's over, Nacho." Eli said. Nacho turned and saw the Shane Gang and the Shadow Clan surrounding him. Seeing that he was outnumbered, he growled and turned to run away back to his mecha. "This isn't over." He said as he rode away.
Afterwards, the gang prepared to leave. "Wow. That was a night I'm never gonna forget." Kord said. "I don't think I could forget it if I even tried." Mario said. "Neither could Pronto. And there are certain things Pronto would like to forget." Pronto said. Just then, the chief and Rune came out of the shadows and approached them. Eli, Harley and the Garcias put on their Shadow Talkers and Earpieces. The chief spoke in its language. And what he said surprised the 6. "What'd he say, Eli?" Trixie asked. "He wants Rune to join the gang." Eli said. The gang was surprised at this. They were getting another member to the gang. "But why is Rune joining the gang?" Kord asked. "The chief said that it was time for Rune to leave the Shadow Clan and start a new life with us. He spoke with Rune and he agreed as he was curious about what's outside the Dark Periphery." Harley explained.
Before departing, Rune gave his father a hug. The chief hugged back, surprising everyone. It was rare for a Shadow Clan to actually hug someone. Especially a human. "Do not think of this as a sad farewell. We will see each other again." The chief said in their language. "I know." Rune said. "Goodbye, my son." The chief said. "Goodbye, Father." Rune said. As they parted from the hug, Rune joined Dana on her mecha as the gang leave the Dark Periphery. 'Hopefully, if there is a future where the Shadow Clan can live together with the other creatures of Slugterra, then Rune and the children of Shane and Garcia will help make that future a reality.' The chief thought.
As they got back to the hideout, Rune was impressed by how much the base has changed since he last saw Will Shane and Cilan Garcia. "This so big. I could never imagine." He said. "Yeah. Well, we had to remodel since we started getting all of our pets." Eli said. "Pets? You have pets?" Rune asked. Just then, all the pets came in to greet their owners. Rune couldn't believe his eyes. "Whoa! A Crystal Worm and an Ice Ogre? Lava Bats, Dino Rats, Cavern Sharks? A Garogoyle, a Fish Monster and a couple Scorpion Bees?" He said with surprise. But what really caught his eye was Bella. "Is that a Zesherian? My father told me they were extinct." He said. "They are. Bella's the last of her kind. And she's been our most treasured friend since me and Eli were little. That makes her very special to us." Harley said. Rune smiled.
"Well now, how about we make you look more…presentable?" Eli suggested. Rune looked at the lead Shane brother, knowing what he was talking about. Vance and Mario helped give Rune a bath. Eliza cut his hair to shoulder-length with jade-green highlights. The Garica sisters outfit him with new clothes. A charcoal-black shirt with a jade-green vest, dark brown jeans, black fingerless gloves and a pair of black and white sporty shoes. And Kord helped him pick out a blaster to his liking. He picked a black and jade-green blaster of Shimei and her grandmother's model.
When he showed his new look to the gang, they were impressed. Even Dana blushed by how handsome Rune had become now. "I'll do what I can to help protect Slugterra from the forces of evil." Rune said. "And we'll do the same with you." Eli said. Rune nodded.
Well, how was that? The Shane Gang meet a new friend, a wild boy who was raised by the Shadow Clan named Rune. Now Rune is now the newest member of the Shane Gang by the request of his father, the Shadow Clan Chief.
