When Max and Laffy had gone into their honeymoon cruise, they had thought that they had taken a pause to the shenanigans of Amity Park. They didn't dislike them, on the contrary!
But given that they had chosen a location out in the Atlantic Ocean (away from the Bermuda Triangle, mind you!) they had hoped NOT to meet a ghost.
As you can imagine by a premise like this, that hope had been unfound.
The husbands were on the deck under the light of the full Moon, lazily feeding a seagull with remnants of their dinner, when Max noticed a ship on the horizon by their illumination. After pointing it out, the couple observed as other boats lit up on the border between sea and sky.
It was a spectacle so fascinating that they kept on looking well into the party that usually took place every weekend after dinner, attracting the attention of other passengers and few cruise personnel. One of the latter was an official on his way to the bridge, so, intrigued by the display, the man took a better look with his binoculars, but froze after a few minutes of observation. He rubbed his eyes and checked again, gasping as one of the ships seemed to come near them.
β Ghost SHIPS! β He screeched with the grace of a five-years-old and fled to the control room in a panic, non caring of the effect those words could have on the people surrounding him.
Well, the other people. Max and Laffy just looked at each other and sighed, one scratching his head and the other deflating.
β So much for a ghost-less vacation? β Laffy smiled resigned at his partner.
β Well, we've never really been "ghost-less", but those ones out there are more evident. β The other man shrugged, fishing from his paper napkin another fry and offering it to "their" seagull, now perched on the boat railing. The see-through bird nipped at the potato then gobbled it down like the garbage bin it was. But who could say no to that adorable feathered face?
β Bruce doesn't count, those ghost ships could be a problem, though. Do you think that we should try to call Phantom or he'll come here on his own? β Laffy scratched the top of the avian specter's head as he watched the pandemonium unfold on the main deck, party long forgotten.
β Ehhh, we still don't know if they are hostile or not, it would be rude to make him come here all the way from Amity for nothing. Let's try to calm these headless chickens, no offense. β Max said to the seagull, who ruffled its feathers, but didn't seem upset.
The couple tried to calm down whoever they crossed path with, with various degree of success, until they made way to the upper decks with the easiness of a walk in the park (usually the security would have already stopped them) and knocked on the bridge where the Captain of the cruise ship should have been.
The steel security door opened suddenly, making the men startle as they faced the controlled-panic face of the vice-captain (they knew because she had done the grand opening speech). β What? β She almost growled. β What are you doing here, this is a restricted area!
β Well, yeah? But we're from Amity Park, so we know a couple of things about ghosts. β Laffy began, nonchalant. β We though you could use some help.
β Have you tried to contact them? β Max interjected before the vice-captain could interrupt.
β Yes, on every frequency! But there's only static. If this is allβ¦ β She said in a no-nonsense voice, tensing to close the door.
β Oh they're EVP! I'm a DJ and Jack Fenton did a seminar in my electronics class on them. I could try to decipher them, if you let me. β Max attempted his best "puppy eyes" at her, making her resolve crumble a bit.
β Fine, but only one attempt! Then you're out! β She made way and brought them to the communication consoles and lent the headphones to the DJ, who listened carefully to the "white noise".
The man hummed pantomiming the words he felt inside the interferences while he absent-mindedly played with a "DP" medallion on the chain around his neck. That action seemed to have some kind of effect because behind the three of them localized mist started to condense into a humanoid shape that leaned forward, resting a now solid ear against the headphones. The woman startled, but the two Amity Parkers just glanced in his direction in acknowledgement.
β Hey, Phantom, 'sup? β Laffy asked as Max yielded the headphones directly to the ghost boy.
β Nothing exciting, you saved me from a lecture. β The white haired boy put on the device and listened carefully. β Okay, how do I activate the microphone?
β β¦That one. Keep it pressed. β The vice-captain instructed after a hesitance.
After a "thanks" the specter's voice tuned into static as well, probably trying to communicate whit the other ships. It took a while and in the meanwhile all activity ceased on the bridge to stare at the display.
β β¦Okay, there was nothing to worry about, they're just sunk ships of various eras that can be visible due to the clear skied Full Moon. A few of them are "on patrol"* they said, so even if some ghost pirates try to attack the humans' ships, they'll protect them. So no need to worry. β The boy said calmly at the vice-captain, who seemed reassured by this aura, so she nodded at them and turned to report the findings to the still scrambling captain. Phantom turned to the couple and broke in a smile. β Hey dudes! How's the honeymoon going?
β As you see, exciting. β Laffy pointed at the chaos outside. β Don't worry and let the adults in charge of this place calm them down. You did already enough. β He gently punched the protector of Amity on the shoulder, making him laugh.
β Okay, okay, you're right. My priority is the safety of you guys, anyway. β The Spirit shrugged, then stretched his limbs and cracked some joints. β Well, if this is all I'm heading back to Amity. If you need anything don't hesitate to call, see you later! β Phantom saluted and dissolved back into mist, probably teleporting back home.
Max whistled at the display. β Every time I see him doing that is still awesome. That was a nice honeymoon gift, don't you think?
β Yep, now let's go back down and try to convince some headless chickens that there's no danger. The "adults in charge" will take a bit to coordinate their effortsβ¦ β Laffy dragged out his husband and the couple descended back on the main deck where the moonlight shined brighter and the ghost ships adorned the starred landscape with their own lights.
Amity Parkers would never bore out even in vacation after all.
* I remember reading somewhere (now I can't find the source anymore, dangit) that if a marine is KIA, during the following roll call, the superior office answers that "they are on patrol". It seemed so poetic/romantic that I decide to put it up as a Treat among too many Tricks this Ectoberhaunt.
A/N. A shout out to Lula for letting me borrow the Guardian Spirit AU! Hope you enjoyed it and I rendered it enough justice!
As I'll said on the Tumblr rec, today October 20th is a Full Moon!
Fright Knight, Nocturne, did you do that on purpose? Or were the designers (mods) of the Banishment Rites geniuses?
Anyway right now I don't have any much other to say, so thank you for reading this and leaving Kudos!
Hope you liked this, type ya tomorrow!
Will Day 21 be Host or Relic? Check in "Domestic Phantoms" and you'll find out!
