After the defeat of the King of Ghost that dragged Amity park into another dimension and the rising popularity of (the formerly specter known as Inviso-Bill) Phantom, the demand for merchandize had skyrocketed, making many shops require products with the "DP" brand.
It was right then that a lawyer of the Manson family copyrighted in stead of the Hero both the logo and the name of the brand, making all the royalties be deposited in a fund under the younger Manson's name (since it would be legal only if the accountholder was officially alive), but only accessible by Phantom.
While the first expenses went into what any teenager with money of their own would have bought (AKA food and games), with the passing of time and the piling of damages to the town due to ghost fights, Phantom (or the lawyer in charge) started to hire construction businesses for the reparations. Moreover, around the summer of the fifth anniversary of his debut, if he had been patrolling but had free time, Phantom would join workers by doing some heavy lifting and sometimes demolition of dangerous ruins.
One of the foreman that saw Phantom more frequently was Rob of the "Robert&Sons". His "company" was a family business and during the few times the spectral teen had helped them they had sort of bonded, making his family the ghost's favorites among the contractors.
This was one of the times that Phantom had showed up out of nowhere and had begun helping them rebuilt a bus stop melted three days before. The supernatural teen (almost twenty-looking by the pace he was aging) had all the safety measures on, helmet included adorned by its usual companion of work, a lime green ghost forest frog.
The construction was going fine, until the sun got so hot you could have flash cooked an egg on any surface exposed to the light.
They had to move to the shade to take a rest and all the men almost huddled around the ghost to get a bit of his "natural" chill to cool down.
That had made the hero chuckle and lightly blush green.
β Do you guys want me to pop up the AC? β He had asked full of mirth at their eager expression. The frog croaked, as if in assent.
β Don't exaggerate, kid, I don't want you down due to an heatstroke. β Rob scolded, briefly taking off his helmet to dry the sweat on his bald head. β If your body temperature is normally so low, heat too high could destabilize you.
β Well, yes and no. During one of my medical check-ups, we tested my heat-tolerance. Usually it starts to bother me only above 212 Β°F [100 Β°C], so now I'm still safe. β He reassured with a smile.
β Well, if you're sureβ¦ But don't go lower than 70 Β°F [21 Β°C] or we'll go in thermal shock. I still remember that time where we had to repair an AC that was blocked at 65 Β°F [18 Β°C], my old bones weren't happy. β Rob warned.
β On it boss! β The boy's eyes gradually shifted to a teal shade, like it was a mix of toxic green and cyan and the area cooled down, making the group sigh in relief.
β Thanks for the favor kid. β Ted, Rob's oldest son, breathed.
β Are you kidding? You are the guys that patch my mess-ups! This is the least I can do! β The worst thing about this statement was that the kid looked sincere, as if he believed it was his fault!
β Phantom- β Rob began sternly, but the other interrupted.
β Danny. You can call me Danny. β The boy stated seriously. The foreman quietly understood the significance of that gesture and nodded.
β Okay. Danny, buildings and things can be repaired or substituted, you are protecting the people of this town because they cannot be replaced. β He stressed. β And technically speaking you're already compensating by hiring us to mend the collateral damage you're involuntarily causing, so don't try to feed us that BS, kid.
Phantom looked away, uncomfortable, but didn't deny or even attempt to defend his reasoning. That was a good sign, so Rob waited a bit before stealing the helmet and ruffling the white mane on the boy's head, to keep him from spiraling too much.
That startled the specter, who looked up and blushed green at the positive attention. Oh God, he's just a little bit younger than my youngest son, how could anyone have let him die this young? The man thought heartbroken.
β So, try to keep it in that tough skull of yours that you don't owe us nothing, okay? Why would you even need this helmet if your head is so hard? β Rob sassed.
β Because even if I'm dead, it doesn't mean that I don't have to respect the OSHA guidelines. It had been enough once, thank you. β He leaned forward to snatch the helmet (and the frog which had remained unperturbed) from the frozen finger of the foreman. As Danny noticed their flabbergasted expression, he smiled wistfully. β What? Did you think that I'm wearing a Hazmat suit just for the esthetic? Don't worry, I got over it a long time ago. β He waved off whatever condolences the workers were about to offer. β It's not so bad.
If the boy didn't want to talk about it, then it wasn't their place to pressure him. He had already offered his first name as a sign of trust, so it was their turn to return the favor.
β Oh, really? Then please, do tell us how that chase with the random rabid fangirl ended. β Rob teased, making Danny groan in despair. Though there was thankfulness in his teal eyes.
β Don't make me think about that, it was a nightmare! β The kid lamented, then started to tell them the details, lifting up the sober mood that had descended upon them.
This was how they passed the hottest hours of that day, chatting and refreshing themselves and avoid thinking about a boy who died in a laboratory long ago.
A/N. This story-concept arrived while I was independently writing the one-shot that later became Day 06, but as you saw, it adapted splendidly for the "Favor" prompt! It was supposed to be a complete Treat, but at last I couldn't keep out the Hurt/Comfort⦠Then again, the Phandom is a delicate balance between the two, so it's still a Treat!
Danny won't become a constructor professionally as "Fenton", like in the Headcanon I was inspired by, but he has strong opinions on OSHA guidelines since the Accident, so he'll always try to follow them when he can.
As for the Phantom Fund: it makes sense that in a capitalistic nation like US someone would try to copyright Danny's hero name, so at least now he can use the money (which others make on his imagine with merchandizing) to compensate for the inevitable damages that occur during ghost fights. I mentioned the fund in other Days, so this is the explanation behind it! Hope it makes sense.
(And "Livin' Large" was a stupid ass episode, so let's pretend it never existed. (ΜU_ΜU)α€)
Hope you liked this, type ya tomorrow!
