In a very different version of Manhattan. One that was a complete island that fully separated from the rest of New York yet still considered a part of it. The entirety of the city itself was made of gargoyles that come and settled there from all across the world. Claiming the island as their own and safe haven for gargoyles of all kinds come to for a fresh start. How they managed to keep this plot of land for themselves and work things out with the rest of the humans that settled in the Americas was lost to time. It just accepted and respected that Manhattan belonged to the gargoyles and that no one was to mess with them.
Even with them turn to stone every morning they were not touched by the humans of New York or any other settlement. They worked together to make their colonies and later their state what it would eventually end up becoming the United States of America. Time passed as the advancement of the time that spread across America also affected Manhattan as well though it always remained at least in ideal the haven for gargoyles that wanted to live as they wanted like how rest of America suppose to be for a human. Manhattan became a large scale version of what the Ishimura Clan in Japan was. Where humans and gargoyles existed alongside one another, just not as closely since Manhattan was mostly just gargoyles only. biggest human presence being Native Americans mostly.
Within a rookery were unlike with other gargoyles that raised all gargoyles born as they belong to a clan, not the biological parents. The gargoyles of Manhattan had been heavily influenced by the humans they existed alongside for centuries. Adopting many of their cultures and customs with gargoyles have names and knowing exactly who their parents are. Within Manhattan, maternity wards would be rookery instead where gargoyle eggs were looked after and kept safe until they hatched and babies were taken home by their parents. Those without parents or those that could afford to take care of them were dealt with similarly to how it was with humans within Manhattan.
Though the city was a haven for gargoyles that did not mean they only existed within that one area it was mostly that they were located there the most and in the largest numbers. Gargoyles lived all across the United States in the open yet the same was not true across the world. Some decided to not reveal themselves and remain how they were before the creation of Manhattan and even Ishimura. Which was respected enough by both the humans and other gargoyles alike.
The parents that took who become the oldest of their three kids home. This Peter and Diane Maza taking home their newly hatched daughter they named Elisa home. Where she grow up a gargoyle of Manhattan and eventually join the police force like her father did protect the city by night and working with various cases that come across her desk.
Arriving at the Eyrie Building one night Elisa noticed panic as wreckage and debris were falling from the skies. Causes not only gargoyles and few humans around on the ground to panic but even more so endangering those in the skies even more. The aspect of gargoyles gliding was not uncommon in the city as they were gargoyles thus gliding was commonplace for them, however, it was only a height where the fall would not kill them. A city with this many gargoyles in it leads to crashes and accidents after all. That and flying too high would get in the way of various aircraft used by humans to fly.
Though what caught her attention was that some of the debris had what the marks of human that sliding down but human fist imprint as well.
"What kind of human could do this kind of thing," Elisa said.
Aware that humans could be strong but this strong was something she never heard of. A gargoyle leaving its mark in stone was one thing but human managing to do something like this. It was possible in theory as they could break through stone but like this. Approached by another officer about what she thinks is happening on top of the Eyrie Building.
"I do not know but I am about to find out" she informs them.
