Chapter 4
Colin POV
The next day I was sitting in my office, when my secretary knocked on my door. "Come in." I said.
"Sorry to bother you but Logan Huntzberger is here to see you." She said.
"Thanks. Send him in." I said, this wasn't going to be pretty.
A few seconds later, Logan walked in and sat down across from me. "Hi." He said.
"Hey. What's up?" I said.
"So after you left last night, I realized that I don't exactly have a reason to be pissed other than at myself. I let my father talk me into that stupid arrangement with Odette and when Rory ended things I told myself that I was going to make the best of it. And then I got that phone call. The one phone call that I knew would piss my father off. Rory was pregnant. And in my head I tried to figure out how could get out of the arrangement, jumped on a plane and be with my family." He said. "But then last night after you left, I realized that it was never supposed to be my family. It was supposed to be yours. You've liked Rory since the beginning and I had to let my ego get the best of me and prove that she would like me more. I know that you guys spent a lot of time together when I was in London. Just like I knew that things were different when I came home. I think that's why I drank so much then. But I guess the real confirmation was when she said no. It hurt I'm not gonna lie. I think that back then I thought that if she said yes, and we moved to California that things would get back to normal." He said. I could hear the sadness in his voice.
"So now what?" I asked him. Where was he going with all this?
"Now?" He said letting out a sigh. "Now I guess I get to be fun Uncle Logan." He said.
"You know your gonna have to talk to Rory about that one." I said and he nodded.
"I know."
"And… your gonna have to apologize for yesterday." I said. Rory didn't care that he had said it. But it didn't make it hurt less.
"I know." Logan said.
I sighed. "Come by the house tonight around nine. The three of us can talk. I'll see if I can get her to let you in the house." I told him.
"Thanks. Should I bring anything?" He asked and I shook my head. "I'll see you later." He said, standing up and walking out of my office. Now all I had to do was get Rory to agree.
When I got home that evening, Rory was in the kitchen cooking dinner. I walked over to her and wrapped my arms around her waist. "Hi." She said leaning against me.
I kissed the side of her head. "Hi. How was your day?" I asked her.
"It was fine. Third graders getting anxious for the holiday break." She said. "How was yours?" She asked me.
"Logan came to see me." I said.
"How did that go?"
"Well…"
She sighed. "Just tell me." She said.
"He wants to apologize." I said, letting her go so I can fix myself a drink. I told her about my conversation with Logan.
"I don't know, Col." She said, as she started putting food on plates. "I don't know if I want him that close to Ellie."
"I know, but that's why I don't him to come after she went to bed." I told her.
"Yeah, ok." She said. "Ellie, dinner!"
While we at dinner, Ellie told us all about her day. Then she told us that she was excited about our trip to Nantucket this weekend. We were going to check on Emily and spend some time with her. Then next week we had the adoption hearing which she was also excited about. After dinner, Rory helped Ellie get ready for bed. I was sitting on the front porch waiting for her to come back down when my phone rang. I looked at and saw that it was Finn. "Hey man." I said answering.
"Hey, so why didn't you tell me?" He asked me.
"Because Rory and I decided that it was better for everyone this way." I told him.
"You don't trust me?" Finn asked.
"Of course we do Finn, it's just you know how Logan is. You know that he would have seen it as me betraying him. He would have seen it as Rory betraying him. Hell, when Rory told me that she was pregnant, I freaked out. Not because she was pregnant, but because she was pregnant with Logan's kid. I mean, we've worked all that out but it still hurt. I didn't talk to her for almost three years. But when I finally did… well, we've been almost inseparable since." I told him, hoping that he'd understand.
"I get it. I've just missed her that's all." Finn said.
"I know. We'll get together soon, okay?" I asked.
"Thanks mate." Finn said before he hung up.
I had just put my phone back in my pocket when Rory walked out with two glasses of wine and handed me one. "What was that about?" She asked me. She sat beside me.
"Finn is feeling neglected. He thinks that we didn't trust him enough to tell him what was going on." I said.
"That is ridiculous." She said.
I wrapped my arm around her and she snuggled into my side. "He's just upset that we've been together all this time and that Steph was the only one in the group that knew." I said.
"We'll make it up to him." She said as we saw a car pull in the driveway.
I rubbed her arm. "It's going to be okay." I said and she nodded. Logan climbed out of his car and made his way up the steps. "Hey." I said to him.
"Hey." He said.
"You want something to drink?" Rory asked him.
"No thanks. Listen, I want to say that I'm sorry. I know that when you told me that you were pregnant that it couldn't have been easy, especially now that I know everything and I know that I definitely didn't make it easy. I talked to Steph before I talked to Colin today and she told me that you're a great mom and that Colin's a great dad to Ellie." Logan said leaning against the side of the porch. "The only thing that I've ever wanted for you was to be happy and that's the only thing that I want for Ellie…and if Colin makes the two of you happy then that's all that I can ask for."
I looked over at Rory. She nodded at what Logan had said. "So now what?" Rory asked him.
"Now? We go back to being friends and I get to be Uncle Logan. I know that it's not going to be easy, but it's what's best for everyone." Logan said.
"Are you happy Logan?" Rory asked. Logan looked at her confused. "With your life." She said.
He shook his head. "Not at all, but I'm trying to make the best of it. Odette wants to have a baby and I've just been struggling with it. Every time she brings it up, I feel like I'm betraying you and Ellie. But then Colin told me today that had you not been so drunk that night in New Hampshire that you would have been with him and not me. So if you think about it, Ellie should have been his daughter all along." Logan said.
Rory stood up and handed me her wine glass. She walked over to Logan and hugged him. When she pulled back from the hug she looked up at him. "That's very mature Logan. I think that if you really took the time to get to know Odette and put in the effort to your marriage you might actually find that you have things in common." Rory said. "It's taken me and Colin a long time to get to where we are but that doesn't mean that we haven't put in the effort. Colin and I go to couples counseling. When we first got back together, we realized that we had some issues that we needed to work through. Over time we realized that the counseling wasn't a bad idea because it gave us the tools that we needed to make our relationship work." She said.
"Thanks Ror." Logan said. "Umm, I've gotta head to the airport but if you guys are ever in London give me a call."
"We will. Next time you're in the area, let us know. Maybe by then I'll be okay with introducing you to Ellie. She's a great kid." Rory said, before walking back over to sit next to me.
"Thanks." Logan said before he turned and headed back to his car.
I wrapped my arm back around her and she snuggled back into me. "I think you handled that really well." I whispered in her ear.
"You know what I think?" She asked me.
"What?"
She looked over at me. "I think that you should take me to bed." She said.
I quickly stood up pulling her with me. "Then what are we waiting for." I said causing her to giggle.
