Chapter 7

Rory POV

I couldn't believe everything that had been going on since the engagement party. The day after, I'd gotten a call from Logan. He'd called to apologize. He'd told me that he hadn't told Odette anything about our history and that when I'd walked out he'd realized that he'd fucked up. I told him that I understood. He'd also apologized about Odette. He'd said that he didn't know what was going on with Odette but that he was going to find out. I had a feeling that he wasn't telling me everything, but it wasn't something that I could worry about right now.

I hadn't talked to Mom since the party, so I was headed to Stars Hollow to talk to Luke, see if he had any idea what was going through her head. When I parked my car at Luke's, I noticed that the town seemed awfully quiet. I pushed the thought out of my head and walked into Luke's. Jess was sitting at the counter. I walked over and sat beside him. "Hey." I said.

"Hey. So, I heard you had some party the other night." Jess said.

I let out a sigh. "Yeah, let's see. Mom ambushed me and told me that I'm making a huge mistake and that I'm going to turn into a vapid bimbo, Logan introduced me to his wife as a girl that they went to Yale with." I told him.

"Dumbass." Jess muttered.

"Then, said wife corners me at the bar trying to intimidate me." I tell him.

"Yeah well I always told you that you could do better than him." Jess said.

"Yeah yeah. Well Colin ended up saving me from breaking her nose." I said.

Jess walked around the counter and fixed me a cup of coffee. He slid the cup across to me. "Like I said, some party." Jess said.

I took a drink of my coffee. "Where's Luke?" I asked him.

"Upstairs." Jess said.

"Cool. I need to talk to him. Come by for dinner tonight. Come see Ellie. She misses you." I told him.

"Yeah sure." He said, turning back to the manuscript he was reading.

I grabbed my coffee cup and made my way upstairs so that I could talk to Luke. I wasn't sure what all Mom had told him but I needed to get to the bottom of this. I knocked on the door and he him holler come in. I opened the door and walked in, closing the door. I walked over to the table where he was sitting and sat down. "Rory, hey." Luke said. "Did I know that you were coming?" He asked me.

I shook my head. "No, but I need to talk to you." I said.

Luke sat back in his chair. "What's on your mind?" Luke asked.

I wasn't sure how to approach everything that I needed to say. "Is everything okay with Mom?" I asked him, to start.

Luke ran a hand over his face. "Honestly?" I nodded. "I don't know. I know that she's not exactly thrilled that Colin adopted Ellie." Luke said. "Why do you ask?"

I let out a sigh. "She ambushed me at my engagement party." I said.

"What?"

I nodded. "She told me that I was making a mistake marrying Colin, letting him adopt Ellie. She told me that I was going to turn into some vapid society trophy wife. I mean, I get it Luke. I know that she's not a fan of society but she needs to understand that I'm not like most of the girls in society. Colin pointed out that Hartford Society isn't the same as it was when Mom was growing up. Most of the girls in Society now work as well as work for charities." I said.

"Rory, I had no idea. Your mom hasn't been saying much. I know that she wasn't a big fan of Colin but she said that she was trying to give him a chance." Luke said.

"She hasn't. Luke I need her to know that if she doesn't really try to accept Colin that I will keep Ellie from her. I'm not saying this be mean. There things about my relationship with Colin that Mom doesn't know because I've never told her. Just like there's things about Logan I never told her." I said, taking a drink. "I know that Mom thinks of me as her mini-me but I need for her to realize that I'm my own person and that it's time to let me live my life."

Luke reached across the table and put his hand on my arm. "It's okay, Rory. I'll talk to her. I'll find out what's going through her head." Luke said.

"Thanks Luke. I didn't know what else to do." I said.

"It's fine Rory. She just wants what's best for you and Ellie, but I think her version of what's best is different from your version of what's best." Luke said.

I smiled at him. "I should get back to Hartford. We're having some friends over for dinner tonight." I told him.

"You look happy." Luke said.

"I am." I told him, before I left.

That evening, I was sitting on the back patio with a glass of wine watching Ellie play. We'd decided to have some friends to come over and we were going to introduce Ellie to Logan and Honor. Colin had told Logan not to bring Odette because if he did, he wasn't sure that I wouldn't hit her. I'd told Colin that I'd invited Jess because I knew that Ellie would be excited to see him.

I heard the doorbell. I walked through the house to open the door. It was Logan and Honor. "I'm glad that you guys could come." I said.

"Thanks for inviting us." Logan said.

I nodded. "Ellie and Colin are out back with Finn, Robert and Steph." I told them. Logan took off for the back yard. I knew that he was eager to meet Ellie. "Wine?" I asked Honor.

"Yes please." Honor said. We walked to the kitchen and I poured Honor a glass of wine. I noticed that she was looking out the window at Ellie, Colin and Logan. "She looks like me when I was little." Honor said.

I smiled at Honor. "She does. She's definitely got that Huntzberger attitude." I told her. Honor turned and smiled at me. "You wanna meet her?" I asked and she nodded. We walked outside.

Ellie came running over. "Mommy! You didn't tell me that I had so many Aunts and Uncles." Ellie said.

I smiled at Ellie. "Oops." I said. I pointed to Honor. "Wanna meet another?" I asked Ellie and she nodded. "This is your Aunt Honor." I told her.

Ellie looked up at Honor. "Your pretty." Ellie said.

"Thanks. Your pretty too." Honor said.

While Ellie was enjoying meeting people and mostly being the center of attention, I walked over to the table and sat next to Steph. "Everything okay?" She asked me.

I nodded. "Yep. Just hoping that none of this backfires and blows up in my face." I said.

"I know but Ror, it's the right thing to do. You know that." Steph said.

I nodded, taking a drink of my wine. "I know, I'm just stressed. That's all it is." I told her.

"Things will get better." She said.

As the night progressed everything seemed to flow easily. Jess had showed up with his new girlfriend, her name was Rebecca. She seemed nice, definitely not like Jess's usual type. And just like I'd told Ellie, she'd been excited to see Jess. Overall it had been a good night.

Lorelai POV

I was sitting on the couch watching Willy Wonka eating pizza when Luke walked in. "Hey hun." I said. He walked in, grabbed the remote turning the tv off before he sat down. "Hey! I was watching that. What's up?"

"Rory came to see me today." He said.

"Oh yeah." I said, knowing that I'd been busted. I hadn't told Luke everything that had been going on.

"Yeah. You didn't tell me that you ambushed Rory at the party the other night." He said.

"It wasn't a big deal. Rory's being dramatic." I said.

"Rory's being dramatic? You told your daughter that she was making a mistake. Lorelai, I love you, you know that, but if you keeping pushing Rory away, you're going to lose her and Ellie, is that what you want?" Luke said.

I leaned back against the couch. "Of course not. Luke, he's not good enough for either of them. He's going to turn her into a trophy wife." I said.

"Lore, that's not your decision to make. She's a grown woman. You can't make decisions for her anymore. Have you even taken the time to get to know him? Have you taken the time to understand Rory's life now? From the conversation that I had with her today, she's very happy with her life. Does she want your support? Of course she does, but she doesn't feel like she needs it anymore." Luke said.

I sat there and thought about what Luke was saying. He was right. I'd never taken the time to get to know Colin. When Rory had first told me that they were dating, I'd just assumed that he was just like Logan. I'd never taken the time to listen to Rory tell me about her life. I never wanted to listen to her talk about the charities that she was working on, or the things that she did in society. The only thing that I'd heard was that she was marrying a guy from society and that I thought that he was going to change her. I'd never thought to ask if the things that she was doing was what she wanted to do. I just assumed that she was turning into my mother. "Your right." I said. "I've got to make this up to Rory somehow."
