The Obligatory Sasuke Rant

I don't actually dislike Sasuke's character. I'm hesitant to say that I like him, but that has more to do with how he has been used than who he is. Sasuke's emotions boil beneath a cool, broody exterior. He is intelligent yet prone to irrational emotionally driven actions, which sometimes lead him into poor life choices. He has an interesting and tragic back story and a cool move set. These are all traits that should make him a first rate character.

In my opinion, the number one criteria for defining a Canon Sue is that the established laws and moral lessons of the story are repeatedly bent or broken to accommodate the character. By this standard, Sasuke is the banner carrier for Canon Sue's. His tendency to fall into poor life choices should create conflict and difficulty for him as a character that simply fail to materialize.

-He takes a shortcut to power and succeeds. In particular, the Cursed Seal that was supposed to be risky and potentially limiting brought no consequences whatsoever. Neither did working for Orochimaru.

-He abandons his friends yet finds greater power than characters who are working to protect their friends. What happened to the love makes you stronger theme? Sasuke's revenge is supposedly a reflection of love and that's why his Sharingan is so strong? Yeah, and I have some oceanfront property in Montana I'd like to sell to you...

-He worked for Akatsuki, the entire world's number enemy, even attempting to capture a jinchuuriki, injuring the Raikage, killing a number of samurai and assassinating the acting Hokage.

That doesn't even begin to touch on his role on the Spotlight Stealing Squad. Throughout Post-TS Naruto's top priority has remained Sasuke even above the threat of Akatsuki. Since Naruto is the main character, this forces Sasuke's storyline to be more important than the Akatsuki thread. You know, the guys responsible for abducting Persons of Mass Destruction in a plot to Take Over the World? This is not helped by the fact that he has eliminated a grand total of four individuals who were at one point members (Orochimaru -- who is alive but has never been the same since and is currently Sasuke's supporter -- Deidara, Itachi, and Kabuto -- who is alive but depowered and trapped in an infinite genjutsu loop). Compare this to Naruto's grand total of two: Kakuzu and Pain. You can argue a third in Konan, but it was Nagato deciding to become a Good Guy that caused Konan to quit. And yet after all of that, what are the fruits of Naruto's labor? Sasuke decides to return to Konoha on his own. All of Naruto's efforts were FOR NOTHING! And I'll bet Sasuke is made Hokage as well. Just a few chapters ago we had Naruto being related to the Sage of the Six Paths. He had finally arrived. Then as soon as Sasuke shows up, Naruto's just another guy.

Pet Peeves

If you think "ki" is an abbreviation of "killing intent" you need to visit Wikipedia. I do not know how this nonsense came about. Ki is a Japanese word. See also: Qi (Chinese).

Chakra is a real life concept that comes from Hindu and Buddhist beliefs. Have some respect for it. Chakra does not work the same way as western RPG mana. The chakra you use for ninjutsu is not independent of your physical actions. If your heart is beating you are producing chakra. If your heart is beating you are using chakra. The harder you punch something the more chakra you use. So, for example, if you think Rock Lee does not have chakra or does not use chakra you are mistaken. (Moreover, even if he cannot perform ninjutsu or genjutsu he can still control his chakra: during the rescue Gaara arc he is shown walking on water in both the manga and anime.)

Henge is not a genjutsu. It is confirmed to be a ninjutsu technique in all canon source materials and is confirmed to produce a real, physical imitation. Naruto's skill at Henge may be very high, but his Henge is neither different nor special. See page 220 of the first official databook for reference. Likewise, bunshin is not a genjutsu. It is ninjutsu.

I understand why writers try to give Naruto a special Henge and other powers, but this is the final pet peeve I want to rant about: do not give Naruto special powers if you are not going to utilize them effectively. If Naruto can run away from ANBU then he should be able to run circles around other genin including Sasuke. Lee level speed at least. If Naruto can hide from ANBU then have him use that skill repeatedly and for varying purposes. It is okay to make Naruto stronger than canon, but have that strength impact the story in a meaningful way. Don't find dumb excuses to suddenly pull it back just so that you can follow the manga more closely! Giving Naruto powers he does not have in the source material and then following the story almost exactly just so that he is not such a loser in the beginning cheapens his character development from loser to child of prophecy who saves the world.

Challenges

1) Elemental Bloodline Challenge. This challenge is very open ended. We've seen a lot of bloodline!Naruto fics, usually involving a doujutsu (cough* Sharingan *cough) or occasionally involving one of the many bloodlines seen Pre-TS (time skip) in the manga (especially Mokuton). This challenge is bloodline!Naruto with one of the elemental bloodlines as seen Post-TS in the manga: Youton (Lava Release: Fire and Earth, e.g. Roshi, Terumi Mei, Kurotsuchi), Ranton (Storm Release: Lightning and Water, e.g. Darui), Futton (Boil Release: Water and Fire, not to be confused with Fuuton, e.g. Terumi Mei), Jinton (Dust/Particle Release: Fire, Earth and Wind, e.g. Onoki), Bakuton (Explosion Release: unknown, my guess is Earth and Wind since Earth and Fire makes Lava, e.g. Gari and Deidara), Shakuton (Scorch Release: unknown, my guess is Fire and Wind, e.g. Pakura), and Jiton (Magnet Release: unknown, based on users appearing in both Suna and Kumo, Wind and Lightning is a logical guess, but Earth and Lightning is also a possibility, e.g. Sandaime Kazekage).

My stipulations are as follows:

a) Do not break Naruto right off the bat. Either it should take Naruto time to master the bloodline up to jounin proficiency or else he should not learn he has it until he needs it. If Naruto is able to beat jounin caliber opponents prior to the chuunin exam finals you fail.

b) Naruto should only have the elemental affinities associated with his bloodline. For example, if you give him the Youton bloodline then he loses his canon Wind affinity.

c) No elemental Rasengan regardless of his affinity. As cool as it may be to see your original ideas about elemental Rasengan variants, his bloodline should provide his most powerful techniques.

d) No other bloodlines. Each of these bloodlines is incredibly powerful by itself. Combine that with Naruto being a jinchuuriki and you're going to have a difficult time trying to keep Naruto from becoming OP thereby violating stipulation (a).

e) Use this as an opportunity to be original. For example in the manga we saw Jiton arise in three different ways: Sandaime Kazekage's iron sand, Yondaime Kazekage's gold dust, and Toroi of Kumo's magnetized shuriken. Try to find clever ways to use the element that are still consistent with the manga and not completely broken. Also, work your way up. If you give Naruto the Ranton kekkei genkai, don't immediately give him Darui's laser circus technique because that's the only one you know. Come up with stepping stones.

Addendum: I would recommend watching Episode 268 of the Shippuden anime before taking this challenge as it explains elemental affinities. Normal shinobi only have one affinity. For Naruto this is wind in canon; for Sasuke it is almost certainly lightning. A shinobi can then learn other elements. Sasuke is an interesting case because he learned an element that is not his affinity first (fire). I know a large portion of the fandom hates him, but he really is incredibly talented. In rare cases, a shinobi might be born with two affinities. This is classified as a kekkei genkai, because the power of your blood grants you the ability to merge these elements into a new element -- something that can only be done if both elements are your affinity. The kekkei touta is far more rare, seen only by Mu and Onouki. These shinobi have three affinities which they can merge into a new element that is extremely powerful, arguably surpassing any kekkei genkai. Also, we see that these kekkei genkai appear in multiple villages. Youton appears in Iwa, Kiri and Kumo. Jiton appears in Suna and Kumo. This may be interpreted in one of two ways: one way to interpret this is as a form of bloodline poaching (stealing bloodline users and breeding them); the other way is to interpret it that these bloodlines sometimes randomly appear in shinobi who are not descended from bloodline ninjas. The first option is pretty dark and you'd have to work it into Naruto's back story somehow that one of his parents possessed a kekkei genkai. The second option allows more flexibility as its not inherently grim-dark -- and it can potentially make the existence of a bloodline in Naruto a bigger surprise. A third option would be to give Naruto the bloodline as a jinchuuriki power, but I'd prefer if you avoid that option (at least for the sake of this challenge).

2) Anime Kitsune Contract (or alternative animal). A challenge for those who know more about anime than just the current Big Three. Naruto receives a summoning contract of kitsune from other anime series. Examples include: Chizuru and Tamamo (from Kanokon), Yoko (from Inukami!), Kurama (from Yu Yu Hakusho -- although this may become too confusing since Kyuubi has the same name), Kugen Tenko (Wagaya no Oinari-sama), and Shippo (Inuyasha).

Stipulations:

a) You must keep the characters respective personalities intact as much as possible.

b) You must adapt their powers to the Naruto world in a way that makes sense within the context of the Naruverse. Mana, Ki and other supernatural forces should be converted to chakra, a characters fire magic now becomes fire element ninjutsu, etc.

c) The power of the foxgirls should roughly coincide with the number of tails. The Kyuubi, as a bijuu, should probably remain separate from this ranking system, but that's up to you.

Alternative: you may use inugami or cat-girls if you prefer, but the same stipulations apply.

3) Bizzaro Naruto. Kushina survived the Kyuubi extraction. 12 years later she is Hokage. She is not a true genius, but what Rock Lee would call a "genius of hard work," abusing her stamina and naturally strong constitution to reach a level of skill comparable to the Sannin. Because of this, Orochimaru is still loyal to Konoha. He was her jounin sensei and initially dismissed her as talentless, but became fascinated by her in a scientific sort of way as she far outstripped her "more talented" teammates in skill. Now Orochimaru is driven by a new obsession: discovering what makes the ultimate ninja. Young Naruto grows up in this world where he is the son of not one, but two Hokages: one who is arguably Konoha's greatest hero, sacrificing his life for the sake of the village; the other its most unshakable stalwart defender who refuses to tolerate political chicanery.
