--• About Muggle At Large •--

OCs / Canon

I realize it's risky to start stories with OCs, but the alternative is to risk morphing canon beyond recognition. Reinterpretation can be fun, but the mission of Muggle At Large is to explore how a muggle could infiltrate the Harry Potter Universe - not my own.

The Pacing

Muggle at Large is a slow burn, taking the time to build suspense, develop characters, and immerse readers in the world. Moments of intensity and fast-paced action will be interspersed with moments more sentimental.

Tom's Characterization

The foundations for Voldemort are present, but Tom hasn't yet lost his childhood hope and innocence. He is moody and bitter, engaged in a war of extremes between pent-up rage and ruthless logic. However, he's still a child who sometimes. Sometimes his carefully crafted facade slips and vestiges of the human love and compassion he lost in canon rise to the surface.

Assuming a position as Deputy Headmaster and struggling with Grindelwald, I choose to believe Tom was a case that's Dumbledore let slip through the cracks. JK Rowling was quoted saying Tom could've been normal if raised by Merope Gaunt. So, I don't consider him to be a psychopath - just a truly tragic villain.

--• Lessons I've Learned From Writing •--

1. There are always at least three distinct interpretations of any given conversation - one for each speaker and one for an outside observer. It sounds simple, but in practice it could be a revolutionary breakthrough for communication.

2. Writing is healthy, helping to organize thoughts and unleash daydreams.

3. You can't please everyone, so make sure you please yourself. Opinions often conflict, so attempting to satisfy too many moderates a creative piece, balancing out to mediocrity. Staying true to your original voice and purpose stands a better chance of reaching an audience and destination that's meaningful to you.
