Maggie wasn't sure why Alex wanted her to meet her in the med station, but she figured she was just being paranoid and wanted to give her yet another checkup. Ever since her close call with death, Alex had been watchful over her health – making sure she didn't push her body too much in the time that followed it.
But since Maggie had been fine, she wasn't sure why Alex wanted her there.
Once Alex has cleared her to leave Medbay she got working again – using the main computer to identify any other malfunctions caused by the asteroids and fixing them. For the first time since she had woken from hibernation, she felt like the ship was in working order.
She entered the room where Alex was standing next to the autodoc and Maggie thought, yep, another physical.
"Hey, what's up?" she said.
Alex turned to her and from the expression on her face, she gathered this was serious.
"What's wrong?" Maggie asked.
"There is something I need to show you," Alex said motioning her forward. She pointed to the display screen on the autodoc. "Once I unlocked the command mode with my upgraded ID, I found some higher functions, including this one – stabilize and suspend all functions."
"What does that mean?"
"It means the autodoc will suspend all bodily functions in a person – putting them back in hibernation."
"Does it work?"
"Yes. I already used it to put J'onn in hibernation in the other autodoc," she said. "When the ship reaches its destination someone on the crew will find him and wake him up."
J'onn had remained in an induced coma in the other autodoc as his body recovered from the hibernation sickness.
"Ok, well, then you need to show me how to work this so you can hop in there and get put to sleep," Maggie said without hesitation.
"If I do that, you will be all alone," Alex said.
"Yes, but you will be alive," Maggie said. "Look this isn't some debate. There is only one of those autodocs left. You did the right thing by putting J'onn in the other one and this one, well, this one is for you."
"But I can't just leave you here," Alex said. "I won't."
Maggie grabbed both of Alex's upper arms in her hands. "Listen to me, you are getting in that machine. You are going to sleep and you are going to wake up and you are going to see Kara again. There is no other decision to make."
Alex looked over at the autodoc.
"I'll come visit you every day," Maggie said. "I'll sit here and I will talk to you about anything and everything."
Alex looked back at her, shaking her head. "I can't … I can't leave you."
"You have to," Maggie said. "You have to."
Alex started to cry, and she wiped the tears away, pulling back from Maggie. "We don't have to do anything right now," she said.
"Alex," Maggie said. "You have to do this."
"Not right now I don't," Alex said.
"Ok," Maggie said. "But we're not going to delay this long."
…
Maggie was down in the cargo area thinking about how soon she would be all alone again. When Alex had shown her what the autodoc could do, she knew immediately it was for Alex. It didn't matter that they had created a life here together. Alex needed to get in there and survive this trip. She needed to see her sister again.
But the idea of being alone again had weighed heavily on her mind.
Could she do it?
Sure, she told Alex she would come to visit her and talk to her, but was she really capable of doing that? Wouldn't it hurt more to see her lying there in hibernation knowing she wouldn't ever be able to hold her in her arms or kiss those lips.
She had to do it though. She had to live for Alex.
"Fuck!" she swore and she swept the stuff off her of the workbench. She backed away from it a moment, but then picked up one of the items that were on the floor and threw it as far as she could. She didn't want it to end like this, but she couldn't be selfish. She couldn't let Alex do what Alex was already thinking about doing – which was staying here with her.
Last night, Maggie had tried to bring up the subject of Alex going back into hibernation, but Alex wasn't ready to have that talk.
Why did it have to be like this? She was happy with Alex. She was prepared to just live the rest of their lives here. Yes, they would die before ever reaching their destination but they would be together.
Now she was going to be alone. She was going to be alone unless she gave in to her weakness and let Alex stay.
"No, no, no," Maggie said. She couldn't start thinking about going down that path because if she did, she knew where it would lead. It would lead to Alex dying without ever seeing her sister again.
If only they had known the autodocs could do that before they got close, before they got involved, before J'onn. But they needed J'onn's authorization to upgrade their bracelets to unlock it. And J'onn was sick. He needed the autodoc. Maggie still felt cheated though.
"Two damn autodocs," she said. "Two on a ship of thousands. How does that even make sense?"
It didn't. She realized.
There would be a hospital on the planet. That hospital would be built and ready to go by the time they got there. It would be the first thing to be staffed as well, just in case there were any accidents upon their arrival.
Everything would be waiting for them on the planet, just like her cabin would be there ready for her.
But they couldn't account for every single thing and this ship was designed not just to send a bunch of colonists to the surface. It was made to transport supplies, a lot of supplies, they shipped more than they thought would be needed, which meant there had to be more medical supplies here. She had never bothered to look at the medical supplies they were transporting because she couldn't do anything with them.
She turned back to her workstation. She could access the cargo manifest there.
…
Alex hadn't seen Maggie all day and she felt like her girlfriend was indeed avoiding her – avoiding the conversation she knew they had to have. She had made up her mind. She wasn't going back into hibernation.
She knew Maggie would argue with her. Maggie would argue that going into the autodoc was the only decision to make, but she was wrong. Alex wasn't going to abandon her to live out a life on this ship alone.
Over time she had become more accustomed to the idea that she was going to die here on the ship and Kara would wake to learn this. She had been writing to Kara – telling her about Maggie so that when she did wake, she knew that Alex had found love. She hoped that would bring some comfort to her.
She was going to spend the rest of her life with Maggie. To her, there was no other decision to make. She wouldn't, she couldn't go back to hibernation knowing she would wake one day and Maggie would be dead. She didn't want to live a life on a new planet if it meant she didn't get to live that life with her.
Now she just needed to get Maggie to understand that.
First, she had to find her. She went to the nearest terminal and asked for her location – cargo bay.
Alex took a deep breath. It was time to tell Maggie she was with her for life.
…
When Alex found Maggie she was sitting on the floor of the cargo bay with opened containers all around her and parts strewn all over the place.
"Maggie?" Alex said. "What is all of this?"
Maggie got to her feet quickly with the widest smile Alex had ever seen.
"This is how we get to be together," Maggie said.
Alex looked at all the parts. "What do you mean?"
Maggie handed her the datapad that was in her hand and Alex studied it before looking up at her. "You are telling me this is an autodoc?" Alex said.
"It will be once I'm done putting it together," Maggie smiled.
"An autodoc," Alex said in disbelief. "If you can assemble this, I can put us both in hibernation."
"If? There is no if," Maggie said. "I'll get it assembled. It's going to take a few days, but I can build anything. And when we wake up, you get to introduce me to Kara and Lena."
"This is …," she couldn't even finish the sentence, she just grabbed Maggie and pulled her in for a kiss. "I … I was coming down here to tell you that I wasn't going back into hibernation. I wasn't going to leave you alone. I couldn't do it. I love you, Maggie."
"I love you too," Maggie smiled. "And we get to spend the rest of our lives together."
…
Maggie and Alex were enjoying their meal – their last one before returning to hibernation. The autodoc had been built by Maggie in the medbay next to the other one. She wasn't planning on going to sleep away from Alex. They had recorded a message and put it in the bay where the crew slept. Once the ship woke up the captain, he would see the message waiting for them and know about what happened. The ship's doctor could then wake and check on J'onn and then wake them.
Tonight would be their last night together until they were woken which is why they were having a special meal.
"I can't wait for Kara to meet you," Alex said.
"I just can't believe we did it," Maggie said. "We're going to wake up and go to a new planet."
"And we're going to do it together," Alex said. "That is what matters."
"About that," Maggie said. "I have something to ask you."
"What?"
Maggie got out of her chair, indicating Alex should stay seated. Maggie moved around and she knelt beside Alex's chair and pulled out a diamond ring.
"Alex Danvers, will you marry me?"
Alex nodded before she could get the words out. "Yes, yes," she said, and Maggie slipped the ring on her finger. The two women stood and embraced before kissing. The kissing didn't stop as they forgot the rest of their meal and rushed off to their room.
…
"Come on," Kara said excitedly as she waited by the door for her wife.
"How can you have this much energy after being asleep for more than 100 years?" Lena asked.
"Because I haven't seen my sister in over 100 years that is why," Kara said. "Now come on."
Kara led the way next door where she hit the pad next the door and was practically bouncing up and down waiting for Alex to answer. But when the doors opened it wasn't her sister there. Instead, there was a beautiful brunette woman who was smiling at them.
"Oh, um, I'm sorry," Kara said. "I must have the wrong quarters."
She was about to back away when the woman spoke, "No, you don't," she said, still smiling. "Come in. Alex will be right down."
Kara looked at Lena who shrugged slightly but they both entered. Immediately, Kara was struck by how "lived in" Alex's place looked. Had she already unpacked in the short amount of time they had been awake.
"I'm Lena," Lena said to the woman holding out her hand.
"I know," the woman said as she shook her hand. "You are Lena and you are Kara, Alex's sister. I'm Maggie."
Before Kara could ask her why she was in her sister's quarters, she saw Alex at the stairs leading up to the bedroom. Alex was just looking down at them and Kara wasn't quite sure what the expression on her face meant, but the next thing she knew Alex was hurrying down the stairs and she met her partway for a hug.
Alex was holding on tight and for longer than Kara was expecting and when she finally backed up, she saw Alex was crying.
"Alex, are you ok?"
"Yeah," Alex said wiping away the tears. "It's just so good to see you." She approached Lena next and also gave her a big, long hug. Was her sister's hair a bit longer than when she had last seen it, Kara wondered as she watched her. When she was done, she went and stood next to Maggie who was still smiling, but this time at Alex, who took the other woman's hand.
"Why do I get the feeling that we missed something?" Lena asked.
"You missed a bit," Alex said. "This is Maggie. My wife."
"What?" Kara and Lena said at the same time.
"It's a long story," Alex said.
The End
