It all started with a simple cough and a slight fever. Of course, she just thought that she just caught a simple cold, nothing serious. After all, it was the season where common cold and flu is more common, and she had contracted it.
Until she had started to feel faint, as her vision started to blur slightly, making her shake her head and rub her eyes to concentrate. She leaned on her table, as she started to cough painfully, making her doubling over in pain and something came out on her mouth.
It was a sakura petal.
Mouri Ran was shocked to see a bunch of bloody cherry blossom petals in her hands, as she wiped her mouth with a tissue. Tears started to fall from her eyes as she saw the pink petals, red blood was dripping to the floor. She was dreaded to know what the petals she had coughed symbolizes, as she had seen in some of her father's case files involving failed romances. She remembered the word that specifically describes the condition.
Hanahaki.
"Hanahaki Disease is a fictional disease where someone begins coughing up flower petals because they have unrequited feelings for someone. The flowers can grow in the stomach, lungs, or heart, though it is traditionally in the lungs. Hanahaki Disease is a painful, slow disease that often develops over months, if not years, and begins with coughing up a few petals, and grows in intensity and pain until the victim is coughing up entire flowers, at which point the disease has reached its final stages. If not treated, the disease is fatal."
She had contracted Hanahaki Disease.
Her eyes widened in shock as tears had started to form, as she had realized how contracting a disease where she had coughed a bunch of flower petals means for her. She felt weakness in her knees, as she had started to sob. A horrifying realization had occured to her: She only loved one person, the man whom she had deeply in love with, and she coughed a bunch of cherry blossoms, which symbolizes their love. Snd if she had contracted the disease and coughed the pink flower out of hundred of flower species, there could only be one thing.
"Shinichi had never loved me anymore."
Shinichi just confirmed their relationship a few months ago, during that field trip to Kyoto. She was very happy that her and Shinichi had finally taken off as official, after years of being childhood friends and secret crushes. But to see the bloody petals of the cherry blossoms lying on her floor...
...Shinichi had changed his feelings toward her, and she was far away from her.
Possibly he had found another woman while on his case he had currently in, and fell in love, forgotten that he had a poor girl waiting for him to come back.
As she realized the horrifying fact that she had dreaded, the poor girl felt the familiar feeling in the back of her throat and started to gag, as the red substance now dripping down her pretty face from her dainty mouth. The pink flowers was forcing its way out again, and she couldn't breathe because of them. She was clutching on her throat in desperation, as she coughed once again, forcing them out.
The harsh cough was painful to her, as she felt the her vision blurred and she couldn't register a thing around her. As she was doubling over in pain, she felt herself losing consciousness, and her world turns to black.
Edogawa Conan was worried about Ran.
The girl was rushed to the hospital, as he found her lying on the floor unconscious, pink cherry blossoms sprawled around her like she had laid a bed of flowers. Conan who was scared that maybe someone had killed her, rushed to her checked her pulse. When he found out that she was just unconscious, he tried to wake her up, and finallyed noticed that the petals was drenched in blood.
Conan was terrified when he saw the blood on the petals, and the Shinichi side of him was worried to death. He called an ambulance, while eyeing the petals. His instincts as a detective tingled, as he had the urge to investigate what caused Ran to be unconscious.
But that can wait. Ran is his first priority.
"What happened to our daughter?"
The doctor was looking at Kogoro and Eri with a look usually seen in professionals, then focused on the file on his hands, as he spoke, "To understand what causes Mouri-san to be unconscious, we had taken a lot of tests, ranging from laboratory tests to an X-Ray. Her laboratory tests shows she's fine, and apparently she had no serious fractures on her skull, beside some bruises from the fall. Although, in the X-Ray tests, we had found out her lungs are almost completely filled with flowers, specifically the Prunus serrulata or also known as sakura flowers. According to the X-Ray results, we could safely assume that Mouri-san has what we called as the Hanahaki disease."
The Mouri parents gasped in shock as little Conan was shocked. He knew that disease only occurs when a victim was involved in an unrequited love. But Ran and Shincihi is officially confirmed to be in a relationship, there's no way-
Conan's sapphire eyes widened in realization as he stared at the doctor. Many questions and thoughts had started to run on his adult mind, so many realizations as he was reflecting on the thought of his love for Mouri Ran.
He knew he totally loved Ran ever since they first met, when she had created a sakura nametag for him. He adored her, her kind heart and her warm smile, which captures Shinichi's calculating heart. She may be a crybaby, but she was considered by Shinichi as the strongest woman he ever met.
When he became Edogawa Conan, he felt the urge to protect her, even though he had to hurt her feelings by making her wait for him, not knowing that he was just beside her, diguising as her 'adopted little brother'. He loved her too much, as he was willing to wipe her tears and cheer her up whenever she cried for Shinichi.
But he had never known...
As the time goes by, from the time he became Conan, his love for Ran had slowly tuned from 'romantic love' to a 'sibling love' and he never realized, too idiotic to realize that his love for the soft-hearted woman was just nothing but platonic. He was too dense in love to realize that his love for her was starting to change for worse.
That means his love confession to Ran in London and the Kyoto field trip was just a mistake in his part, that he had nos mistaken his growing 'deep' platonic sibling love for Ran as 'romantic love' due to his denseness, and Ran had ultimately paid the price.
He made her wait for nothing, and succumb to her bloody death...and it was all his fault.
The doctor continued to speak, as the little boy was silently glaring at the floor, "Hanahaki was a very dangerous disease, and it is a physical manifestation of unrequited love and if left untreated, Mouri-san could die. The flower that a victim throws up depends on multple factors: one of which is the symbolism and importance of the flower to them. Is there any person that your daughter loves or adored?"
Kogoro grumbled as he spat,"The only boy that my daughter loves is that annoying detective brat, and that bastard had always disappeared to the ends of the Earth, making my daughter cry. If this disease was caused by unrequited love like what the doctor said, that means that Kudo brat had never loved her back and it's all his fault. That bastard, I'm gonna kill him!"
Conan just said nothing. He was too busy looking at the woman lying in the bed, trying to stop the tears started to fall in his eyes.
Ran's mother, Kisaki Eri, asked the doctor, as she was worried about her daughter, "Is there any cure for this Hanahaki Disease?"
The doctor nodded as he spoke with a grim voice, "Apparently, there are two cures recorded for this disease. One, the vicitim will be instantly cured if it turns out that the object of the sufferer's affection does indeed love them back. If this boy you call Kudo truly loves her back, she will be cured, but alas, if he did love her truly, not just forming a deep friendship bond. It was must be real romantic love. It was like the kiss of true love in movies, but this is a serious manner."
Conan flinched, as he tried not to speak up. Eri asked again, her eyes started to tear up, "And what about the other cure...if we can't do the first cure?"
The doctor replied in a solemn voice, "The second cure can be promising, although there is a huge price and you need to speak with this to Mouri-san. Apparently, the disease can also be cured by surgery, usually by removing the flowers. The surgery can help the afflicted to remove the flowers and survive. The catch is that they will then emerge with Mouri-san losing their feelings for the person they love, or worse, Mouri-san will have no memory of the person that they are in love with. It can sometimes can be managed with medication (though this is not seen too often), but it never fully goes away.
"You had to act immediately. Once she started to cough whole flowers, this is where real danger comes in for her."
Eri cried, as she was holding her daughter's pale hand and hold it tight, while Kogoro's hands clenched in anger, as he spoke, "I think we would do the second cure."
Eri and Conan stared at Kogoro, one with shock and one with sadness. Eri's voice screamed as she shook her head in defiance, "Anata, let Ran decide with this one! You can't just decide this for yourself!"
Kogoro glared at his wife as he retaliated, "Eri, look at Ran! She's dying and it's because of her stupid love to that bastard named Kudo Shinichi! I won't let my daughter die because of her love. I know our daughter, I am definitely sure that that Ran would choose to die than to let her feelings for that bastard die!"
"I'd rather have my daughter live."
Eri looked at her daughter with a sorrowful look and closed her eyes, as she squeezed her daughter's dainty hand. Conan was looking at the scene unfold in front of him. Kogoro was right.
It's better to let Ran forget her love for him than to let her die.
Romantic or platonic, he don't want his beloved Ran-neechan to die because of him.
Eri opened her eyes as she sighed, as she reluctantly nodded and replied, 'As much as I wanted to let Ran decided for this, our daughter's life was more important. I just say we should continue with the surgery."
"No."
The occupants of the room looked at the source of the voice and saw Ran now conscious, struggling to croak the words, "I won't let you."
"Ran," Eri spoke as she squeezed Ran's pale hand, "This is for the best, Ran. We would rather see you alive and well, than to see you six feet under. You had a life to live, you had your family and friends to love you. Just let him go. It's time for you to stop waiting."
Ran's eyes filled with tears and and she sobbed, hesitating as she was playing with the loose threads on her sheets. The she started to spew out her feelings, "I just wish that Shinichi would like me back, I could feel his love when he confessed to me on London. But why? Why did he never loved me back now? Did he find someone to love truly while he's on this case he had been? Did he cherish her like he had with me? I feel guilty now, now that I realized that I had hold him back when he could just tell me in the face that he had never loved me anymore, and I was still blindly waiting for him... Maybe he just took me in out of pity."
Conan looked at her with widened eyes, as he felt remorse and sorrow over Ran's words. He then spoke up in a childish voice, surprising the four occupants, "He did not took you in out of pity, Ran-neechan. I am sure that Shinichi-niichan may be never reciprocate your love, but I am sure he wanted you to be happy. It's time for you to be happy for yourself, and let go."
Kogoro grumbled, as he glared at the boy, "And how would you know that? Did the bastard told you?"
Conan grinned childishly, as he stared at Ran's own, his sapphire eyes radiated sadness and acceptance, "No, but I know Shinichi-niichan will always love Ran-neechan, even as a best friend or even a sibling!"
Ran smiled sadly at the faux child as she reached out to Conan and ruffled his hair softly, "You always comforted me with the right words, Conan-kun."
Ran coughed as she winced in pain, spewing a cherry blossom petal and held it on her palms. She then held the cherry blossom and raised it, watching the petal under the harsh lighting of the hospital lamps. Her amethyst eyes sparkled with tears as she spoke with a soft voice, "You're right, maybe it's time for me to stop waiting. I hope that Shinichi would be happy too, it's time for him to let me go and move on ith his life. About the surgery, I will now consent to remove the flowers, sensei."
The doctor smiled as he nodded, "You are truly the bravest, Mouri-san. Are you really sure for your decision?"
Ran nodded inacceptance, as she smiled and replied at the doctor's question, "Yes, sensei. I am sure in my decision."

A/N: Hello, I am now back with a new oneshot series involving my favorite pairing Shinichi x Ran (ShinRan)! I totally love this ship, but I also love angst, so I made this fanfic.
As you can see, I will make a bunch of oneshot stories in Detective Conan, based on the prompts I found on the internet. Majority of the fics will be based on ShinRan, but I may possibly do some fics regarding other relationships in the fandom.
