Thank you to justanotherpotatosittingaround for reviewing the last chapter and for your constructive criticism. I've gone back and edited Fudd's speech and generally just fixed up the last couple of chapters.
See chapter 1 for the disclaimer and let's crack on.
It was three days before Bugs next saw Elmer. Technically there was nothing stopping him going over to Fudd's house except for the fear that Fudd would just slam the door shut in his face, but Bugs common sense was telling him to leave it alone.
When Bugs saw Fudd, the hunter was sitting at a table, by himself, daydreaming. In a thought bubble above his head was a image of Fudd driving in a expensive car. The rabbit grinned and walked over. "Eh...ya know yer broadcastin', right?"
Elmer looked at him in confusion and Bugs indicated a circle just above his head, the Toon gesture for 'thought-bubble'. Elmer turned scarlet and the thought-bubble instantly disappeared.
"I need to get that undew control." He muttered.
"It can slip." Bugs reassured him. There was silence which Bugs immediately filled by pointing at the chair opposite Fudd and asking if it was free.
Elmer replied, cautiously, it was his if he wanted it and the rabbit quickly sat down before he changed his mind.
After a couple of minutes of absolute silence, Fudd said, haltingly. "I...think I shouwd apowogise. I acted weiwdly and didn't explain myself pwoperwy. I just..." He sighed. "...I wike things pwanned. I don't do weww with genewaw spontaneity. I can do it for a cawtoon, that's no problem, I know what I'm expecting then. Chaos." The hunter gave a laugh, which Bugs joined in with. "Plus we discuss the outline of what's going to happen before, so I know what's 'going' to happen. When you just...invited me over it jarred with me. I...probabwy shouldn't have gone. I knew I wouldn't be in the wight fwame of mind, but I thought I couwd handwe it." Another sigh. "Cwearwy I was wrong."
"Well, yeah, it wasn't great." Bugs agreed. "But no worries. It's happened, a'right? It's gone. Finished. Done and dusted-"
"-I get it."
Bugs gave a shrug which indicated an apology before checking. "Is it alright if I stay here for de rest of lunch? When do ya hav' ta go back?"
Elmer confirmed he had another twenty minutes left of his lunch and no, he didn't mind Bugs staying while he finished his lunch, but could you please say something and not just stare at me, you wascawwy wabbit!?
Bugs - who had been thinking what a lovely shade of blue Elmer's eyes were - jolted back into reality and asked Fudd how his shift had gone so far.
It was there Elmer [once again] proved his worth as a comedian, telling Bugs about a couple of characters that came to get their lunch orders including one women who was infamous for sending back every order she ever had. After years of bending over backwards [sometimes literally] to try and please her, the toons had learned that of they just served her the exact same thing again [so make the entire order again] she didn't complain. At first there had been complaints of food wastage [another effect of living through the war was hat the older toons were very aware of wastage.] but that had been solved when the interns popped by. They were so happy to be given free food by there favourite cartoon characters they didn't care how old it was.
Elmer got so wrapped up in his story that he actually forgot to go back on time and Tom Cat had to order him back.
"Alright, alright, I'm coming." The older toon said, irritably.
As he went to get up, Bugs went to grab Elmer's arm but, remembering the reaction last time, stopped himself.
Elmer gave him a curious-and-also-slightly-amused look and asked what he' been trying to do.
"Are ya in next Thursday? Here, oi mean?" Bugs asked, after doing some mental calculations.
Elmer nodded.
"...Do ya maybe wanna do this again? It was nice spendin' time wit' ya."
"We do spend time together, Bugs." Elmer pointed out. "We're going to the pub on Saturday."
"Do you wanna do this again or not?" Bugs repeated, exasperatedly. Really, Elmer could be so literal sometimes!
Elmer - annoyingly - looked completely surprised someone wanted to spend time with him but after thinking it over for a few seconds, nodded cautiously.
And from there sprung a regular lunch-date.
