Rossi panted as he leaned against the side of the side. Well, more like a large cabin. The worn-out logs pricking through his shirt. His hands gripped his weapon in anticipation of what could occur next. JJ stood beside him; a worried look etched across her face. Her chest rose and fell in rapid silent breaths. Morgan and Reid took the back entrance with Emily. Rossi exhaled slowly, his breath coming out foggy. It was cold in Oregon at this time, clear signs the snow was coming early this year.
"Nobody makes a move." Rossi whispered.
Reid glared at the cabin, his mind wandering to begin of the week. Had he not pestered Hotch into taking this case, they wouldn't be in this situation. Letting out a shaky breath, he glanced at Morgan. "Do you think he is okay? It's been over 48 hours. The chances for him to come out-"
"Reid." Morgan snapped him out of his rambling. "This is Hotch we are talking about here." Morgan knew the statistics of kidnapped victims. But he wasn't about to tell that to the kid. "He will be alright."
"I should have never pestered him to take the case." Reid mumbled. "We should have gone with the abductions instead."
Emily sighed. "Reid, we all decided to take this one. It's no one's fault alright." Emily turned her gaze back towards the cabin. In a way she agreed with Reid. Hotch was very adamant in not taking this case, but when Reid told them a friend of his was the lead detective, they all jumped onto it. Now she was really regretting that decision. "He will be fine."
Emily knew this case was trouble the moment they read it. 5 victims had gone missing in the past week. The unsub would take one victim Friday night and by Sunday morning, a dog would be found inside cage at the abduction sight. But no victims were ever found. Like Hotch had said they were able to come with a profile within the day after the last abduction. It took them less than three hours to catch the unsub. Unfortunately no matter how much they asked him where the Victims were, he kept saying he returned them. When Reid went in to speak with him, he got the complete 411 of what was going on in his head. The man truly believed he turned humans into dogs. Emily scoffed at the sincerity in the man's words.
Unfortunately the team did have enough to convict him, so in the end they had to let him go. She did notice the obsession he had with Hotch. Constantly asking him what his favorite dog was. Questions about his childhood and love life. Hotch nearly decked the guy when he began to describe what a sex scene must be like between him and his girl. Rossi and Morgan had to drag their unit chief out. She chuckled to herself. Hotch was the most composed and neutral man on the team, but say one wrong thing about JJ and all bets were off.
"Emily." Morgan gave her a harsh whisper. "You good?"
"Y-yeah." Emily nodded.
Garcia paced her office, glancing at the phone every two seconds. She had been on the phone with Hotch, when he had been taken. All she could remember was the slight groan of pain and the line going dead. For two days they have been trying to find Hotch. Her mind and body fighting constantly to get some sleep, but she couldn't. Not until she knew he was safe. "He will be fine. He will be fine. I swear to whatever is holy if you aren't fine, I am going to kill you!"
Rossi peaked through the muddy window; it was nearly impossible to see anything. Still, he saw no movement. Heard no noise. "It's too quiet."
JJ flinched. "That's never a good thing."
Rossi sighed; she wasn't wrong. "Morgan?"
"Go ahead."
"Anything on your end?"
"Nothing, it looks abandoned." Morgan gestured Emily to check the windows on the side. "Em's checking the sides." Emily came back with a shake of her head. "Nothing."
Rossi gave a growl of frustration. "Alright, on my count we go in. Hold all fire until we know Hotch is safe. Clear?" Everyone called out their clear, before Rossi ordered the breach.
Morgan busted the back door down, ordering the others to spread out. They searched the cabin from top to bottom finding no Hotch and no Unsub. "It's clear."
"This was the last lo-" Rossi stopped at the sound of a faint growl.
JJ froze at having heard the slight growl. Her fear of dogs coming back in a rush. "Is that what I think it is?"
Rossi nodded, walking closer to a large black couch. "It came from behind here." Gesturing for Morgan to cover the other side, the glanced behind the couch. "It's a black dog." Reaching in for a pet, the clearly scared dog snapped at the hand. Rossi jumped back in time. "Damn."
"You alright?" Morgan had taken a jumped back, aiming his gun at the animal.
Grabbing the end of the couch, he pulled it away from the wall. "Just fine."
Said dog jumped over the couch at the movement of the couch. Landing in the middle of the team, he crouched down baring his teeth. The team were able to get a clear view of the animal. The stirring silhouette of the Belgian Shepherd conveyed both elegance and muscular determination. He had a handsome feature of the dog was the exceedingly proud carriage of the head and neck. He stood at about 26 inches at the shoulder. The dark eyes sparkle with a questioning intelligence, and the black coat is abundant, from the neck's 'collarette' to the 'breeches' of the hindquarters.
"What now?" JJ whispered, trying not to make sudden movements.
"Just don't make any sudden moves." Rossi searched around the house for anything they can use to trap the dog. Worst case scenario someone gets bit and the dog dies.
A small gasp caught everyone's attention. Emily stared at the animal wide eyed. "It's neck."
JJ glanced at the dog, kneeling down slowly. "Is that a chain?" Swallowing her fear, she called the dog over. "Come here." The dog whimpered slightly as he crawled towards the agent. Her hand shook slightly as she reached for the chain around his neck. It was a small familiar cross on a thin chain. Flipping it over, she gasped at seeing the engrave 'Always with you: JJ'. "Holy shit. Hotch?"
