En route to Raccoon City
Sgt. Ryan Jackson sat aboard the Boeing 747 thinking about what led him to this point in his life. Ryan had grown up in Oklahoma City, did well in school, had a supportive and loving family and worked hard to pursue his goals in life. He was definitely middle-class to a tee. Ryan's family wasn't rich, but they certainly weren't poor, but they lived well and in a decent neighborhood. Ryan was born on July 28th, 1972 and graduated from high school when he was 17 in 1989. Ryan lived a very active lifestyle and spent quite a bit of time in the gym, but chose to take a year to further prepare his body and mind for the demands of the military, which was what he always wanted to do, and joined the United States Army in 1990. Ryan was a model soldier, always going above and beyond the call of duty, respecting the chain of command, and was an expert marksman. Weapons were Ryan's specialty. Choosing to specialize as a rifleman first and foremost, Ryan wanted to be as versatile as possible by cross-training as a scout sniper and demolitions expert. He was also skilled at modifying his weapons with aftermarket parts, always looking to make a better custom build.
After earning a promotion to Corporal in 1995, Ryan remained there until just 2 months prior in July. A sleeper agent from Eastern Europe had infiltrated the ranks of the U.S. Army and by sheer dumb luck, had been assigned to the same base as Ryan in Fort Carson, Colorado Springs. The renegade agent attempted to assassinate Ryan's captain, Captain David Weathers, at the first opportunity. Ryan managed to save the life of his Captain and killed the agent in the process. After the news of his actions was sent up the chain to his CO and the Chiefs of Staff, Ryan was commended for his actions and promoted to Sergeant shortly after. He was now being reassigned to Fort Braxton in Raccoon City to take command of a small team there and serve as a firearms instructor.
"Attention everyone, we have begun our final descent. Please make sure your seat belts are fastened and your trays are in their upright and locked position. We thank you for flying with us and hope you have a pleasant evening."
Ryan shook himself our of his reflection and prepared himself for the plane landing. He still had a 2 hour drive to Raccoon City. Luckily, since he had been moving cross-country, he had been allowed to slowly move the things he would need onto the base before he had to report in. His military bag and clothes were already there having been sent ahead by the military, so he didn't have to stop by the baggage claim. He just had to get his rental car and make the 3 hour drive to Raccoon City. It was only 5:30, so he planned on driving straight through.
The plane landed smoothly and completed it's procedures and the passengers began to disembark. Ryan got up from his seat, and double-checked his pistol at his hip. One of the perks of being a Sergeant and having a command position was that Ryan was allowed to carry his own firearm. Ryan carried a Heckler and Kock USP45 with a flashlight/laser sight combo mounted on the rail.
"Why the Army chose that piece of shit Beretta is beyond me." He thought to himself.
As Ryan disembarked and entered the airport, people around him took notice of his uniform and waved and smiled. Ryan responded in kind. It was little things like this that he really appreciated. As he walked toward the rental car counter, he stood in line behind a family of four. An older man and his wife walked up to him and thanked him for his service and shook his hand. The couple's two younger sons noticed him and waved.
"Are you a soldier, mister?" one of the boys asked.
"I sure am, buddy. What gave me away?" Ryan said with a smile.
"We noticed the patches on your uniform and that my dad shook your hand and thanked you. We noticed that he usually only does that with soldiers, and they all usually look like you." said the boy's brother.
"You have a good eye on you, kid. And i appreciate it. Your dad is a very nice man. That means a lot to us. You two take care and have a safe trip, ok?"
The boys' mother then approached Ryan. "Thank you for being so kind and entertaining my sons. If its not too much trouble, would you mind if i got a picture with you and my boys together?"
"Of course. If it's what they want." Ryan said.
The boys were ecstatic and Ryan posed for a couple pictures with the happy youngsters. After exchanging a final handshake and goodbye, Ryan stepped up to the rental car counter.
"How may i help you sir?" said the young woman behind the desk.
"I have a reservation. Just picking up my vehicle." Ryan passed the woman his driver's license, military ID, and reservation paperwork.
"No problem, Mr. Jackson. Everything is in order. I'll just get your keys and show you down to your vehicle."
Ryan followed the clerk down to the garage and after filling out the last few forms and was handed the keys to an olive green Jeep Cherokee.
"Thanks. Appreciate it." said Ryan.
After exchanging goodbyes, Ryan hopped in the Jeep, pulled out of the parking garage, and hit the road on his way to Raccoon City.
3 1/2 hours later-9:00 p.m.
After making a stop to eat a good meal, use the bathroom, and gas up the car, Ryan was on the outskirts of Raccoon City. As he was passing by Mizoli Gas Station on the outskirts, he noticed a blonde woman about his age, who from the looks of her attire, appeared to be a government employee, standing next to her vehicle, trying to reach someone on her cell phone. Ryan pulled over and got out.
"Hey, are you alright?" Ryan asked as he approached her.
"Well, I've seen better days. My car is pretty much out of gas. There is no one in the station and its all dark and closed up, and i can't seem to get a signal on my phone to call for help."
"I might be able to help you out." Ryan extended his hand and the woman returned the handshake. "Damn, she's gorgeous. Slender legs, curves in all the right places, those eyes, that smile...damn it Jackson, get your head out of the gutter! You just met her, for christ's sake!" Luckily, Ryan was trained to scan without moving his head, so she didn't notice his wandering eyes.
"Sgt. Ryan Jackson, U.S. Army. What's your name?" Ryan asked.
"Agent Paige Tanner, FBI." the woman responded.
"Well, Agent Tanner, so what brings you here to Raccoon City?" Ryan asked.
"Apparently, there has been a viral outbreak in Raccoon City. Happened about a week ago on the 23rd. The military and the National Guard have been deployed in the city. Apparently, it has spread so fast, that most of the city has been infected. That's all the information I've been able to gather. Communications have completely broken down inside the city, so HQ sent me in to see what the hell's going on." said Paige.
"What the hell? I wish i had known about this earlier! I just got promoted and transferred to Fort Braxton in Raccoon City! Today was my moving day and i was supposed to start work tomorrow! I need to get to the military base and find out what's going on. In this type of event, the base is going to be the safest place, and it looks like you might find some answers there. Hop in, I'll give you a ride!" exclaimed Ryan
"Right. Let's go!" said Paige.
Ryan and Paige hopped into Ryan's Jeep and hauled ass towards Fort Braxton just outside of the city. The sight of the base grounds was horrifying, In the midst of the rain storm that was coming down, small fires were everywhere, vehicles were destroyed, and Ryan and Paige drove by the base's occupants wandering the streets, or what was left of them. A zombie in military fatigues lunged at the driver's side window, moaning and growling, with its body replaced with bloody, rotten flesh. Ryan and Paige just looked at each other in horror.
"Well, I would say you just found some answers to this viral outbreak, Paige." said Ryan.
"Oh my god...they're dead...but they're like...zombies!" said Paige.
As the pair maneuvered their way towards the main building, they saw 2 zombies feasting on a man who had just died, and a dead woman rise again as a zombie shortly after being bitten.
"Okay, there's the main building. There aren't too many of them surrounding the base. So it seems like the the majority of the troops stationed here were immediately deployed to the city to deal with the crisis there, and we're still on the outskirts, so the majority of the infected should end up being in the city, so there shouldn't be too many people in there." said Ryan.
"That's a good point. We might still be able to find some survivors holed up in there as well." said Paige.
"You're right about that. We actually need to go in there anyway. Most of the answers we're going to find are going to be in the city, where most of the danger is. I'm going to need my gear and some better weapons. I doubt pistols will get us far in this type of situation." stated Ryan.
Ryan drove to the back parking lot of the base, parked the vehicle, and turned the lights off. He scanned the area, noticing there were only a few scattered zombies in the back parking lot that hadn't noticed the vehicle, otherwise he wouldn't have done that. Ryan was able to see the glowing ID badge scanner on the back door was still lit up, indicating the security systems to the base were still working.
"Ok listen, they haven't seen us yet. My ID is going to get us in the back door. All the doors to military bases are code-locked and steel-reinforced so they are not going to bust it down and get inside. We are going to have to clear the stragglers out of here to have a safe path. As soon as we start shooting, that's going to attract the group of them from the front area and the roads, so we are going to have to run once we start firing. Got it?"
"Sounds like a plan. Let's do this." said Paige.
The pair drew their pistols and exited the Jeep simultaneously. Ryan took two zombies down with quick head shots and ran forward to clear a path for Paige, who just took down a zombie to her right, and spun around to take down another approaching from behind.
"Paige! Run towards the door. You take the right side, I'll take the left!"
Ryan and Paige immediately went back to back and cleared out the zombies on their respective sides and ran for the door. Ryan fired the last shot in his mag, clipping a zombie in the neck, slowing him down. Paige had needed to reload as well, but she was a bit farther ahead.
"Here. Take my ID. Slide it into the keycard slot and wait for the green light. Get the door open. I'll keep them off of us."
"OK. You be right behind me!" cried Paige.
"No problem!" Ryan loaded a fresh mag into his USP and began firing at the approaching pack of zombies with all the discipline his training taught him. After dropping enough to give him enough of a path to run, Ryan bolted for the door, hearing the familiar beeping sound of a keycard opening the door.
"Ryan! It's open, let's go!"
Ryan made it to the door, got inside, and managed to lock and secure it seconds before zombies piled on the door and began banging on it, growling and scratching to get at the two heroes inside.
"Okay, I've never been inside this base before, but most layouts are the same. There are maps throughout the hallways so people don't get lost. We'll definitely need to clear the place as we go. Wouldn't be surprised if some infected managed to get in. Then we should head for the mess hall to regain our bearings and maybe find something for food and water before we move on."
"Copy that. Let's go."
The two heroes made their way through the base, clearing out the few zombies that were inside the base. Ryan's hunch was right. Most of the military was dispatched to the city and left the base, leaving the base locked down and no one inside, but no one able to get inside with no staff on hand. As they made their way through to the mess hall, a supposedly dead zombie on the ground lunged at Paige and managed to grab the loose fabric of her suit pants and pulled her to the ground. A quick stomp to the head by Ryan prevented a tragedy.
"That's gonna be an issue. Especially in the city when there are hundreds of these things. Might be able to find something around here." thought Ryan.
After making their way to the mess hall for a bit of rest, Ryan got to know a little bit more about Paige as far as her combat specialties. She lived in Virginia, and was stationed at the FBI Field Office in Quantico. Originally from Florida, she joined the Miami-Dade Police Department at 21, and at 24 joined the Miami-Dade PD SRT Department, so she had some light experience with automatic weapons and was no stranger to wearing heavy armor and gear.
Fort Braxton Military Base
September 29th, 1998-10:30 p.m.
After refueling with some water and some leftover MRE's in the mess hall, Ryan and Paige made their way to the locker rooms.
"Why are we heading to the locker rooms, Ryan?" asked Paige.
"Well, we need to address that issue that almost got you in the main hallway. Keep your FBI creds on you so you have something official in case we run into survivors or someone else with authority, but your current-get up isn't gonna cut it. Too many loose articles of clothing means too many things a zombie can grab hold of. Not to mention you need to wear your hair up into a ponytail or a bun and maybe put a hat on, to prevent that becoming a problem. We need to get gear from the armory, and that's not going to work. I just need to get my vest and battle gear from my locker and find a weapon, but you need to change completely." explained Ryan.
"I didn't even think about that. I can't believe i almost died due to my pants not fitting tight enough." laughed Paige. "Thanks Ryan, I'm glad i stuck with you."
"Hey, we're partners. We got thrown into this thing together, so we finish it together. Til the end."
"To the end, partner." said Paige.
As they entered the locker room, Ryan found that the changing areas were indeed segregated just like his old base to prevent any obvious issues. Rows of pants and shirts hung up on each area of the locker room as well as multiple pairs of military boots next to lockers on the ground.
"Okay, all the women's wear is over there. This stuff is all washed and clean. The guys have the same kind of stuff over here, just your basic OD green shirts and tactical pants, socks, and the like. Basic parts of the uniform that each soldier is issued multiple articles of. You should be able to find some things that fit. You go ahead and get changed and I'm going to go back outside and keep watch by the entrance door. Only one way in and out of here." said Ryan.
"Okay thanks. I'll be out in a bit. And no peeking! Did you honestly think i couldn't see you undressing me with your eyes when we first met?" said Paige with a smirk.
Ryan had a shocked look on his face, unable to believe he got caught. After seeing her smile though, he decided to play along.
"Could you blame me though? Beautiful AND badass? I'm from the South, so to me that just screams "sexy." Ryan said with a wink.
Ryan left the locker room and Paige began looking through the clothing, laughing at the exchange that just took place.
"He's a charmer and knows how to give a compliment. I'll keep that in mind." she thought to herself.
Time skip
A short time later, Paige met Ryan outside to make their way towards the armory. Paige was now sporting an OD green t-shirt, FDE tactical pants, and a pair of black military boots. The pants had a side zip-pocket that she was able to keep her FBI credentials in and not lose them. She had also found a loose scrunchie to put her hair up in a ponytail and found a camo U.S. Army hat. After clearing a path to the armory, only running into 3 zombies in a couple side rooms off the main hallway, they arrived at the armory.
"OK now my card will get us into the main part of the armory where the armor and gear is stored, but the weapons cage is locked with a 4 digit keypad code that only Sergeants and above have access to. Looks like i got promoted just in time." said Ryan.
"I couldn't think of better timing. That's a relief." said Paige.
Ryan slid his ID badge into the card reader. His name and rank came up on the computer, scanning his information. Shortly after, the light indicator beeped and glowed green, granting him access.
"Okay, take a look around and see if you can find something you can use. If you need help, let me know and i'll try to get you fixed up. Military gear is a bit more complex than police gear." said Ryan.
"Got it. Thanks."
Ryan went over to his locker, unlocked it and grabbed the things inside. "If i put all of this on, I'm going to be weighing my self down where i can run as fast as i need to. Better plan ahead here." he thought to himself. Ryan removed his uniform jacket and put it aside, putting on his combat vest over his T-shirt. He took his personal pistol belt off and placed his sidearm in the tactical thigh holster with mag pouches he was given. He grabbed his KABAR combat knife, gave it a few test swings, and placed it back in the sheath on his belt. Finally he grabbed his own U.S. Army hat and a pair of tactical fingerless gloves. Ryan was all set to go.
"Now all i need is a rifle of some kind." he thought to himself.
"Paige, how we doin over there?" Ryan asked from across the room.
"Good. Found an extra one of those combat knives still in one of these lockers, a pair of gloves, and i got lucky and found the last combat vest from the women's area, but i can't seem to get it to fit." said Paige.
"Okay, come here and I'll give you a hand."
Paige walked over and Ryan began adjusting the straps on the shoulders of Paige's vest, until she told him they were tight enough. Then he got behind her, reached around and ran the front straps through the back piece of the vest to tighten it and fasten it. Finally, the vest was secure.
"Sorry if i was a little too close there." said Ryan.
"No sweat. I figured you liked it back there." smirked Paige.
Ryan stuttered and stammered at that comment, which made them both laugh. "I barely know you, and already you are such a tease."
"Let's just get this door open, playboy."
Ryan moved toward the keypad lock for the weapons cage, punched in '3224', and the door opened.
Obviously with the incident, the weapons room, was slim pickings. There was quite a bit of ammo, as the troops couldn't just tote all of it into the city, but a huge chunk of it was gone. Paige managed to find an MP5A2 sub-machine gun with a red dot sight and 5 magazines.
"You good with that?" asked Ryan.
"Yeah. I've used the MP5 many times before. I definitely need more weapons training before i move up to something heavier. I loaded up the mags, refilled my pistol and took some 9mm with me so, i'm good to go. Now you just need to find something."
"Yeah, that's the problem. There's not shit left around here. I'm going to check the back area where the workbench is and see if there is anything."
"I'll go with you."
The two heroes walked to the back area and Ryan found an M4A1 Carbine taken apart with a brand new SOPMOD upgrade kit next to it.
"Jackpot!" Ryan exclaimed. "Seems like a Spec Ops guy, probably a Ranger, was working on a build and never got to finish it before the shit hit the fan. That's mine now. Paige, this is gonna take a little bit, because i essentially have to build my gun from scratch. Would you mind keeping watch by the front door of the armory?"
"You got it."
Ryan grabbed the tools off the workbench, opened up the SOPMOD parts kit, picked out what he wanted for his build and got to work. He took the basic rail off and replaced it with the Knights Armament rail system from the parts kit. Next was installing the 4x ACOG scope on the top mounted rail and getting it sighted in. Ryan then positioned the foregrip on the bottom of the rail where he wanted it, leaving plenty of room to attached the under-mounted flashlight. Finally he grabbed the laser sight, mounted it on the side of the rail, and aligned it with the ACOG scope. Finishing up with a loose rifle sling fitted to the gun to allow versatility and maneuverability, he was left with the grenade launcher and sound suppressor.
"This will have to do. I need the foregrip and light and there aren't enough grenades left around here to make it worth putting that thing on and the suppressor will just take away some velocity and these things are hard enough to kill as it is." Ryan thought.
He had one more idea to get the most out of his build. He found a few mag clamps lying around the work bench. Enough to bind 8 mags together "jungle-style." Or make "dual-mags." Whatever people called it. He picked up 8 magazines, bound them together in pairs of 2, and sat down to load every single one of them, giving him 240 rounds on the go. Once they were loaded, he loaded up his M4A1 with one of the mags, chambered up a round and he was ready to go.
"Now that's badass! Nice work." said Paige, walking back into the room.
"Thanks, lets finish grabbing what we need and get out of here. Now we need to find a vehicle. The Jeep isn't gonna cut it. Let's go down to the parking garage and see if anything is there."
After grabbing some .45 and 5.56 ammo for his weapons to carry, Ryan and Paige headed down to the parking garage, ready to leave the base. After flipping the breaker to power on the lights, there was one Humvee remaining, but it was surrounded by zombies.
"Open fire! Let's take them down!" cried Ryan.
Smartly conserving ammo, Paige set her MP5 on semi-auto, picking off the zombies one head shot at a time, while Ryan covered her with 3 round bursts from his M4A1. The pair managed to make short work of the infected.
"Check it and see if the keys are in it. They may not be. I'm going to check around here and make sure this area is secure." said Ryan.
"Got it. Hang on." Paige climbed into the Humvee, checked around, but came up empty. "Ryan, the keys aren't here!" Paige began to get out, but noticed a rack on the wall where vehicle keys were kept. "Ryan, the case on the wall!"
Ryan ran over to the case, opened it, and retrieved the lone set of keys. Running back to rejoin his partner, Ryan told Paige to take stock of anything that was in the Humvee they could use.
After checking the back area of the vehicle, Paige rejoined her partner up front.
"1 extra combat vest, another MP5, a Sig-Sauer P226 9mm pistol, and some communications equipment. There are 4 vest radios with attachable earpieces."
"Grab 2 of those radios and we will get ourselves equipped with comms. The rest will be just enough to outfit 1 survivor if we happen to find anybody alive in the city. The base is pretty much picked clean. I'm surprised we found what we did." said Ryan.
After getting their radios attached and their communications synced up, Ryan started the Humvee, and barreled down the road toward Raccoon City.
"Just a few more minutes and we're definitely gonna be in the shit, partner." said Paige.
"You said it. I can't imagine what we're gonna find when we get there. It's gonna be like walking into the gates of Hell. I didn't expect my first job in a command position where I'm leading and taking care of people to be a damn zombie outbreak. Not gonna lie, I'm a little nervous."
"It's alright. You would be crazy if you weren't nervous, Ryan. But like we said, we stick together. We're partners and we're gonna see this through to the end. Got it?"
"I hear ya. Hey in case we don't get a chance for small talk later, or if something happens, i have something i would like to ask you. It's probably a shitty time right now, but who knows what's gonna happen in the next few hours."
"What is it? Go ahead."
"If we make it through this shit, look me up afterwards. I mean seriously, give me your number and let me take you out sometime. What do you say?"
Paige couldn't help but smile and laugh. "He doesn't need to know i planned on doing that anyways. Might as well have some fun with him." she thought to herself.
"You got a deal, playboy. Now let's get to the city and stop this nightmare, partner."
End of Chapter
Hey everyone! Bet you guys didn't expect this. Ok, so i am not abandoning the Pokemon story. I have been trying and planning to get a new chapter out and i have just hit a brick wall. I think i made a mistake by picking such a huge, and expansive world for my first FanFic. I have played nearly all of the RE games, watched both CGI movies (yes, the only ones that matter) and know most of the lore, so i have a good idea as to what to do and where i want to go as far as Resident Evil. Pokemon will be on a hiatus, and i will eventually come back to it. What i am working on now is a Resident Evil Series. Basically i am doing a run through of the game stories, but adding my own OC's into the mix and eventually having them interact and meet our beloved Resident Evil characters. Yes, i am going for a romance/pairing for Ryan and Paige, but it will be a slow build up. If you can guess by the way i wrote my OC's, they are going to be an OC version of Chris and Jill. They will both eventually end up as founding members of the BSAA, but Ryan and Paige will have a romance. Just gotta figure out how to do it. Ryan is basically a self-insert of myself with a name change. I'm a gun guy and am very knowledgeable about firearms and every weapon i gave them was right for the time period of 1998, so i couldn't give them anything from today because it wouldn't make sense. For Paige, she is basically being played by Ali Larter. I didn't like the live-action movies. But Ali is an awesome actress, does pretty well in horror, and she was great in the RE series. She will get some development, but she will end up as a beautiful badass like Jill, don't worry! Hope you all enjoy!
