Nick loved Adalind and wanted to marry her. The first step was finding the perfect ring.
He wanted something special to give to her. Something that represented how committed he was to her. So when Nick set out to look for a ring, he kept in mind the type of woman Adalind was.
Nick looked at several different rings in several different stores before finding one he thought was perfect for Adalind.
It was a gold band with one three carat white sapphire surrounded by half carat gems that trailed down on each side of the band.
It was almost as beautiful as the woman on whose finger it was intended.
Nick felt it said what he wanted, that his love for Adalind was so strong that nothing could destroy it. And it let anyone who saw it on her finger know that she was in a very committed relationship.
The two biggest problems he foresaw were hiding the ring until it was time to pop the question and creating the perfect proposal.
One of the things Nick loved most about Adalind was her intelligence. But that could also be a problem if she got curious and decided to start searching through his things.
Which was one of the two big reasons why Nick didn't want to put off asking Adalind to marry him. The other reason being that he just didn't want to waste any time making Adalind his for the rest of their lives.
Upon finding the perfect ring, he decided to keep it in his desk drawer at the precinct to keep it from being discovered by his bride to be too soon.
Which meant that he needed to explain to his partner Hank why he was putting a ring box in the far back of his desk drawer.
"I'm going to ask Adalind to marry me." Nick explained with a smile he couldn't contain.
"Hey, that's great, man!" Hank responded, thrilled for his partner. "Lets just hope you have better luck than I did the first time around. And the second. And the third."
"Well if it doesn't work out then I'm not trying again."
Nick was determined to do everything in his power to make the relationship with Adalind last. Losing her again was completely out of the question. His sanity wouldn't be able to take being separated from her again.
Nick was not one to give up ones he loved without a fight. And he was certain that he had to be ready at any given moment to fight for Adalind's love. There were far too many who would try to take her away from him or cause some turmoil between the two.
So whether it was a threat from some wesen organization or their own stubbornness, Nick was determined not to let anything get in the way of the love he and Adalind had for one another.
And it was important for him to make the proposal as special as possible.
"The problem with my household is that I live with two people who have no qualms about searching through my stuff." Nick further explained the issues he faced in creating a surprise proposal.
"That's the price of living with women." Hank knew all too well how a man's things were never his own once he allowed a female into his domain. "I still have sweatshirts missing that I know I'll never get back."
Nick remembered the first time he saw Adalind wearing one of his shirts. It was in the previous timeline.
Their baby boy had spit up on her and she hadn't enough clothes or had been able to do laundry, so when she had requested he get her a shirt, his were the only clean ones he could find for her.
There was something in him that had stirred at the image. And that stirring got stronger when he walked into the bathroom right after she emerged and saw her undergarments hanging.
He had been conflicted about his growing feelings for Adalind, but he realized life was never going to be normal for him, so why would the path to love be.
This new timeline was certainly proof of that.
And this time was better because he didn't have to struggle with guilt, anger, or fear. It was especially nice because the awkwardness caused by past sins was erased since those sins never happened.
And thanks to some changes in the timeline, The Trailer holding all of his ancestors' things was still intact. Nick decided that would be the perfect place to show Adalind he wanted to make her officially part of his family, and start a family bloodline of their own.
Under the guise of needing to do research for a case, Nick requested Adalind join him in the trailer.
To make sure they would not be disturbed, Nick let all of his friends know what he was planning. They all wished him luck and promised to keep their distance. Trubel was spending the night at one of her new friends' houses, so that meant Nick and Adalind had the whole night for just themselves.
Nick made sure to arrive at the trailer first. Knowing Adalind and loving her brilliant mind, he decided to place the ring between the pages of a book, secured safely by ribbon tied around the tomb so that it could be easily mistaken as a bookmark. These specific pages were the entry about hexenbiests, and Nick wrote down an entry of his own.
When Adalind arrived, looking so beautiful he nearly dropped to his knee right there, Nick made sure to place the book with the ring in it in her hands, and then insisted she sit down at the desk.
Adalind was immediately suspicious. Nick usually had them both sitting on the bed whenever it was just the two of them.
The best reward for several hours of research being their naked bodies entwined in pleasure.
But Adalind said nothing and sat at the desk. Her curiosity grew when she realized that Nick was watching her instead of looking at the pages of the book he was supposed to be reading.
Then she opened the journal he gave her to the section with the bookmark,,,
And gasped at the lovely ring that laid inside.
Through the tears of joy welling up, she caught Nick's handwriting.
Hexenbiests can be brilliant and passionate. Some can be great allies for a grimm who treats them with kindness and respect. And sometimes it's possible for a grimm to fall deeply in love with a hexenbiest, of his own free will. He can realize that his world is a better place with her in it. And I, Nick Burkhardt, hope to make Adalind Schade my wife.
Adalind turned her head to see Nick by her side, on bended knee, looking at her like she held his heart in her very hands.
"Adalind Schade, will you marry me?"
Adalind could not nod her head fast enough. She pushed herself from the chair shouting, "Yes! Yes! Oh yes, Nick, yes!"
She ended up shouting the same thing an hour later, when she was wearing nothing but the ring.
