Dear Diary
This was the case I didn't want to take on, and initially I refused it. The circus.
Too many memories, painful memories so when Samson asked me to look into the suspicious death of Miss Christopher I pointed him in the direction of City South and Victoria's finest.
Sadly, the officer looking into the case was useless even with Hugh's help so I joined the circus – no longer a childhood dream, now a childhood nightmare and it got worse when Grossmith recognised me as he arrested Miss Parkes for the murder.
I don't think I performed to my best, I had knives thrown at me as part of an act and I'm sure the last one was a deliberate attempt to see me out of the picture.
I felt on my guard all the time more than I usually do, only Samson knew who I was, everyone else had the customary distrust for an incomer, and I was sure that Matthias the Ghoul, also a new performer, was watching me even more closely particularly after Grossmith recognised me, I began to wonder if there was a connection between the two – he was always in makeup, lurking creepily around the ground.
I went to see Jack, shocked him into seeing Miss Parkes by flashing my brief costume so I could ask her about her previous arrest – for the murder of her husband. She has epilepsy – but she was key to finding out what was going on – you see, Diary, she was in the cells with an older woman, Elsie Tizzard who turned out to be the Ghoul's mother – though he was supposed to be in jail. She showed Miss Parkes a picture of her son in a locket she wears and Miss P recognised him. She alerted Jack who had found that he had escaped from prison. He and another inmate had staged a fight and used some horse tranquiliser to simulate death. The other inmate was supposed to meet him at the circus but didn't show.
Grossmith turned up again, this time I was in trouble, he was in on the escape attempt as was Mr Jones the circus owner, and killed Miss C when she asked for more hush money. Now they knew I knew too much and had to be got rid of – Samson arrived as the ghoul was about to start digging my grave, but Grossmith shot him in the shoulder, Jack and Hugh turned up in time to finish the arrest having found out about Elsie Tizzard's son.
The Ghoul's partner in the failed jail escape – Murdoch Foyle. He's dead, his mother had his body burned, he would have been alive when he went into the furnace; I am relieved he is dead but now I shall never know where Janey is, what he did to her, but I shall never stop looking for her body.
