A/N: This is short and, again, pointless, but it was super fun to write, so I hope you like it a bit.
It's pretty warm out, something odd for Tokyo in February. Kyo would be perfectly content to spend the day lying under the kotatsu to get even warmer (something that Tohru would muse is "catlike" if she were here). But when Tohru gets back from the store and bursts through the front door, he knows immediately that that daydream won't come to fruition.
She was just going to the drug store to get tampons, she'd said, but about an hour into her outing, Kyo started to panic and called to ask where she was, and just had said that she was getting a "surprise," and left it at that.
"Kyo-kun!" she says breathlessly.
"Hey. What did ya do, run the whole way home?"
She drops the two plastic grocery sacks she's carrying onto the floor and bends at the waist, putting her hands on her knees. "M-maybe."
He rolls his eyes, but can't stop the smile that spreads across his cheeks at her enthusiasm. "Let me get you some water."
"No, wait!" She springs back up to a standing position, and Kyo freezes, an eyebrow raised. "Don't you want to see the surprise?!"
He actually is kind of curious. He nods. Tohru picks up one of the bags and pulls out a small, colorful box, cheering out a "ta-da!" as she does so.
"What...is it?"
"Chalk!"
"Eh? Like that sidewalk stuff?"
"Mm-hmm! I thought we could draw. It was on sale!"
"You know why it was on sale? 'Cause it's February."
"It's warm, you even said so earlier, Kyo-kun."
He's not creative. Not at all. He's never actually done it, but he assumes that drawing with sidewalk chalk requires some of that. Plus, isn't it for, like, little kids? Though, Tohru does always find joy in the smallest things, so…
"Uh…" he mumbles, running a hand through his hair. She steps closer to him, smiling so sweetly that he thinks it might literally kill him.
"Pleaseeee, Kyo-kun? It'll be relaxing! You've been stressed since the curse broke."
She's not wrong. He's been playing catchup for weeks, trying to plan his future out. Their future. He sighs and raps his knuckles against her forehead. "Yeah, okay. Let's do it."
So a few minutes later, they have their jackets on and they're kneeling on the long concrete pathway between the house and the staircase leading down to the main road. The box of chalk sits open between them. Tohru selects the pink piece and gets right to work, doodling away on the pavement. Kyo watches curiously. He can't tell what the drawing's supposed to be, but she's having fun with whatever it is—the smile on her face is goofy and bright. He picks up the orange piece of chalk and turns it over and over in his palm.
"So why did you think I'd like this?"
"It's relaxing," she reminds him.
"Are you saying I'm uptight?" he teases. She shoots him a look that suggests he already knows the answer to that, Kyo-kun. "Well, what am I even supposed to do?"
"Draw."
"But what?"
"Whatever you want!"
He taps the chalk against the pavement, already frustrated with himself and his lack of imagination. She watches him closely for a minute.
"You...didn't get to do this when you were a kid, did you?" she asks slowly.
He shrugs. "Master bought me toys and stuff, but I never really had much of an interest."
He could tell that she was trying really hard to not let her sadness at that comment show on her face.
"Well, today, we're six years old!" she announces, getting up and moving closer to him. She kneels beside him, her shoulder against his arm.
"That's weird."
"Kyo-kun."
"Okay, okay. Well, I'm actually pretty good at drawing, ya know."
She raises an eyebrow. "Oh?"
"You don't believe me?"
She smirks, and his breath is instantly taken away. "Prove it," she says plainly.
He lowers the chalk and starts drawing straight lines with sharp angles, then he picks up the green piece to repeat the process, then blue to color in the blank spaces. "There."
Tohru tilts her head to the side. "What is it... exactly?"
"It's abstract. So whatever you want it to be." He can't keep the laugh out of his voice.
She rolls her eyes and smacks his shoulder playfully. "It is kind of pretty."
"Pfft. Well, what are you drawing over there, Picasso?"
"It's a house!"
"Mmm…"
"Does it not look like one?"
"No, it does…"
She giggles. "You're a terrible liar."
Kyo blushes and leans into her, kissing her temple. "Isn't that kinda a good thing?"
She just hums and tilts her chin up to him, silently asking for a real kiss. He chuckles and obliges, cupping her cheeks in his hands and pressing his lips to hers. When they pull back, she's smiling, and he can feel that he is, too.
"Are you having fun?" she asks.
"Actually, yeah."
"You didn't think you would?" She puffs out her cheeks into a pout.
"No, I did not." He laughs as her pout only increases. "Well, that's not true, exactly. I have fun doing anything with you."
"That's not the same," she insists. He doesn't argue, just fiddles with the chalk in his hand, watching it coat his palm in colored dust. Then, he drops it, letting it crumble against the ground, and reaches out to Tohru again. She squeaks in surprise at the sound of the chalk crashing on the pavement and his sudden, quick movement. Kyo rubs his fingers across her nose and cheeks. Her eyes widen as she figures out what he's doing.
"H-hey!" she stammers, and he honestly really likes how completely flustered she looks. He tries to keep a straight face, but can't help but burst out laughing. Her face is covered in blue streaks. Once he starts laughing, he can't stop, because this is ridiculous—not only is he outside drawing with chalk that claims on the box it's for ages 3+, but he's also messing around with Tohru like he's a little kid. He never thought he'd get to do this with her, act completely childish and free, without the burden of the curse or the future hanging over him.
She laughs hard, too, until she's clutching her ribs and whimpering an "owww."
While he's still chuckling and not paying attention, she reaches out to him and covers his face in green. He jumps, startled, then smiles and clicks his tongue in mock disapproval. "That's not very nice, Tohru."
"Maybe I'm not always nice," she quips.
"Oh, is that so?"
"Mm-hmm."
"Prove it," Kyo says, parroting her words from earlier.
She bites her lip and looks down, as though she's very seriously contemplating how she might do that. And then she kisses him hard, grabbing the collar of his jacket and pulling him in close. She nips at his lower lip, then soothes it with her tongue. When they break apart, he can't help but gasp a bit at her forwardness.
"I dunno," he says after catching his breath. "That was honestly pretty nice."
Tohru laughs breathily, knocking her nose against his.
"Are you still gonna pretend we're six after doing that?" he teases.
"Shut up," she murmurs through a grin. She kisses him again, and suddenly continuing to tease her is the last thing on his mind.
