"Eh? What are you all doing?"

It's rare to see everyone in the hallway by the front door, gathered around the little table that holds the house phone (which no one quite knows why Shigure still keeps in the age of cell phones, so it greatly remains untouched, anyway). And, nowadays, it's even rarer to see that all three of his roommates are home at once. Yuki and Shigure don't spend a ton of time here anymore, and it's almost never coordinated to be at the same time. One of them is always off doing whatever the fuck those weirdos do with their free time—Kyo doesn't know exactly what, and doesn't really care to ask, either.

Instead of answering directly, Tohru waves a thick, fancy-looking piece of paper in the air. "Kyo-kun, look!"

He chuckles as he kicks off his shoes in the genkan. "Nice to see you, too," he teases.

"O-oh, I'm sorry, welcome home! Look!"

He wants to go upstairs and shower off the sweat caked to his skin after an evening at the dojo, really doesn't want to look at whatever the hell this piece of paper is, but also kind of has to; if it's important enough for everyone to stand around in the hall, and for Tohru to be practically buzzing with excitement, he should probably be involved, too.

He steps closer to Tohru and holds onto her wrist to stop the rapid movement of her hand. "I can't look while you're shaking it." He takes the card and scans it. "A...wedding invitation?"

"Mine-san and Ayame-san are getting married!"

"Oh. Huh. That's kind of fast, isn't it?"

Yuki has a look on his face that suggests he knows more about their relationship than anyone else here does, but he doesn't say anything, just shrugs and shakes his head as Tohru jabbers on.

"Oh, is it? Hmm…" She glances back down at the invitation, apparently pondering that.

Kyo stares at her. She's pensive. Did he say something wrong? Probably—he's good at that. So he backtracks.

"Uh. Well, maybe not, I guess. I barely know them."

"Aya's actually quite romantic. He'd been planning a proposal long before the curse even broke, apparently," Shigure adds. Kyo shrugs in response. He didn't know they were a thing during the curse, but then again, he had no reason to.

Tohru changes the subject. "Yuki-kun's been asked to be the best man, too!"

"Really? Why?" Kyo asks. He doesn't have too much disdain toward Yuki these days, but the snarky words sneak out of his mouth as part of an old habit. Yuki takes it well, fortunately.

"Good question," he sighs, turning to head upstairs.

"Kyo-kun," Tohru chastises softly. She's never liked the two boys fighting, and now that the curse is broken and she's dating Kyo, she tries to use that status to get him to back off. He grimaces at being caught. He tries. He really does.

"Sorry," he says softly.

"Well, I'm off to the main estate," Shigure announces. As he opens the front door, he adds, "Don't stay up too late. You have school tomorrow. Oh, and Tohru? Please make sure the boys eat. You know they'd starve without you." He sounds way too much like an adult right now. It makes Kyo's skin crawl.

Tohru giggles. "Don't worry, you can leave it to me!"

Shigure would starve without Tohru, too, but Kyo bites his tongue before the thought can be vocalized.

When he's gone, Tohru turns toward Kyo, tilting her chin up expectantly. He meets her halfway and gives her a sweet kiss. "Hi."

"Hi," she says back, smiling at him. "How was the dojo?"

"It was good. There were some little kids that Master asked me to work with. They were brats, but they were pretty good at what they were practicing, too. I'm gonna shower, then I can help you with dinner." He presses his lips to her forehead and heads for the stairs.

"Oh, uh, Kyo-kun?"

He pauses and looks at her over his shoulder. She seems twitchy—she's drumming her fingertips against her thigh absentmindedly, avoiding making eye contact, and chewing at her lip. Kyo comes back to her.

"Hey," he says gently, taking her hands in his. "What's up?"

"Will you...well, would you consider being my date to the wedding?" she blurts, face beet red.

He can't help but laugh a little at that, ducking his head and kissing her again to stifle it before he embarrasses her. They're dating. They're in love. He thought that being her wedding date went unspoken, but apparently it's been weighing Tohru down since she first saw the invitation earlier.

"Well I sure as hell don't want you takin' some other guy."

Tohru laughs, but it still sounds a little anxious.

"Of course, Tohru. I'll be your date to every wedding for the rest of our lives, if you let me."

Her eyes widen for a moment, then she blinks and turns her face away to hide tears. Kyo runs his fingers through her hair, and she leans forward, letting her forehead rest against his chest. "I love you," she whispers.

"I love you too." Then, in attempt to make her less teary, he changes the subject a bit by adding, "Are you gonna wear a dress?"

"Of course!"

"Well, then I'll have to come up with something nice to wear, too, huh?"

Tohru picks her head up and looks at him. "Do you not own a suit?"

"I don't think so...and if I do somehow, it definitely won't fit anymore."

"We can go shopping!"

That sounds painful. And expensive.

"Let me ask Master if he has one I can borrow first, yeah?"

"Mmm...good idea. That would definitely save money."

"When is this thing, by the way?"

"March 13th."

"They're only giving us two weeks' notice? Jeez."

She smiles and shakes her head at him in amusement. "Just go shower so you can come back down in time to eat with me."

Kyo runs a finger under the stiff collar of the dress shirt loaned to him. He's about four seconds away from ripping the tie off, absolutely convinced it's going to strangle him. In the end, he'd gotten a suit from Haru, since they're similar in stature, and Haru's mother apparently makes sure he keeps a few plain suits around, for some reason.

When Tohru finally comes down the stairs to meet him, he instantly forgets about the tie, his throat getting tight for a whole new reason—

She's beautiful.

She's wearing red. It's not a color he's used to seeing on her because she usually goes for more muted tones—beige, light pinks, soft blues and purples sometimes—but it suits her really well, just like everything does, honestly. The bright color somehow makes her eyes look even warmer than they usually do, and compliments her light skin. The skirt is slightly ruffled, and the bottom of it dances around her thighs as she descends the staircase.

He meets her at the bottom of the stairs, taking the hand she reaches out to him.

"You look really pretty," he tells her. Her blush matches her dress.

"Thank you. You look really nice, too."

When she says that, he suddenly doesn't mind the suit so much anymore.

Shigure and Yuki had gone down to the main estate earlier, and Hatori, who usually gets roped into driving everyone everywhere, has to help set up things for the reception. So Kyo and Tohru end up taking a taxi, though Tohru insists the whole way that they could have walked. But Kyo knows there's really no way in hell she could have comfortably walked that far in those heels, even though she would have forced herself to do it, no questions asked.

Tohru's ecstatic when they walk into the courtyard where the wedding will take place, and she takes Kyo's hand, dragging him all over. There are various pictures of Ayame and Mine scattered about, surrounded by flowers that Tohru knows all the names of, since apparently her grandfather likes gardening. She's excited to the point that a lot of what she's saying comes out in fragmented, unorganized sentences, but Kyo listens attentively nonetheless, just happy to hear her voice.

She cries during the ceremony. Kyo finds it more entertaining than anything; instead of traditional Japanese wedding attire, Mine and Ayame are dressed extravagantly (he likely made the outfits himself, and it definitely shows) and their vows are read theatrically. When it's over, they all move further into the estate to wait for dinner and a more Western-style reception.

When they find their table and sit down, Tohru sniffles.

"You good?" Kyo asks, squeezing her hand.

"It was just so beautiful," she says, voice hoarse. He can't help but chuckle a bit, which makes her pout, so he kisses her as a silent apology. "My makeup is probably so smeared, huh?"

"Nah. You look perfect."

She mumbles her appreciation, but still frets about her face all through dinner, until Kyo finally pulls out his phone so she can look in the camera. "You're such a girl," he teases when she discovers she's had nothing to worry about.

She giggles. "Isn't that why you like me?"

He scratches at the back of his neck awkwardly. "One reason, I guess…"

"Mm."

"Hey, uh...dance with me?" he asks, standing. He holds out his hand, and Tohru stares at it with wide eyes before taking it and letting him pull her up.

"You dance, Kyo-kun?"

"No, but I will tonight, with you."

The smile on her face gives him butterflies.

They're both horrible at this, they discover. They stumble, both over each other's feet and their own, but it doesn't matter—they're happy. They laugh together about nearly falling, they knock their noses together affectionately, they kiss each other whenever they get close enough to. Kyo briefly wonders if they're annoying the people around them, but very quickly finds that he couldn't care less.

"So, I'm curious," he says, tugging her around in a messy spin.

Tohru laughs as she gets pulled back into his chest. "Oh? What about?"

"Is it true that girls, like, plan their weddings out from when they're little kids?"

"Oh, well, some girls, I guess."

"What about you?"

She blushes, but Kyo's not really sure why. He lifts one hand from her waist and uses it to tuck some stray hairs behind her ear. She relaxes again when his fingers brush against her face.

"Maybe,"she says plainly, shrugging a little.

He laughs. "I know that means yes," he teases, and this time, he actually likes the way her entire face burns red. "So, what do you want ours to be like?"

He's curious, of course. He loves her, he wants to marry her someday. They've made comments like this to each other before—Tohru often off-handedly mentions their future kids, among other things. But for some reason, she clams up now, maybe a product of their current environment, or just how direct he had sounded.

"O-oh, uh, I don't really know...and, honestly? What I thought about as a little girl doesn't matter to me anymore. Any wedding I get to have with you will be perfect."

Now it's his turn to blush. He hopes the dim evening lighting hides it, but by the way she smiles at him and touches his cheek, he knows it doesn't.

He leans down to her, kisses her temple, and then brings his lips close to her ear. "Wanna get out of here?" he whispers. His voice is much huskier than he'd intended it to be, but really, all he's been thinking about for the past hour or so is taking that pretty dress off of her. A handful of weeks ago, he never would have thought such a thing without feeling guilty, like he'd be corrupting her. But now, she's initiated mild intimacy before, so maybe, just maybe...

Apparently he got his point across, because she giggles and says, "You sound like you're trying to pick me up or something."

He chuckles and tries to swallow down his nerves. "Well maybe I am."

"Then, yes." She grabs his hand and tugs, practically dragging him across the lawn on her way to the exit. All Kyo can really do is squeeze her hand, try to catch up, and laugh in relief at her enthusiasm.

Yuki and Shigure are staying over at the main estate, as they're part of the wedding party, so once Kyo and Tohru make it to the house, they know they're wonderfully, dangerously alone until morning. The idea makes his heart race out of nervousness just as much excitement. While Shigure and Yuki are rarely home at the same time, there's almost always one of them here, somehow, like they conspire against him or something. At least tonight, they can take their relationship to the next level without having to sneak around—if she still even wants to, of course. He's worried the air between them will be awkward after the suggestion he'd sort of made at the wedding, but things feel just as natural as they always do, despite the implication hanging between them.

He slides the door shut behind him as Tohru stands in the genkan, fumbling with the heels she's wearing. When the door is locked, he turns back to her and shakes his head as he watches her struggle. "Do you need some help?"

Tohru scoffs. "No. I think I've worn heels more than you ever have, Kyo-kun."

Kyo just chuckles. "'Kay."

A moment later, Tohru gets the buckle undone and thrusts a shoe in the air triumphantly. "See?!"

"Yeah, yeah, okay," he replies, putting his hands up. "Careful with that pointy thing."

She giggles along with him, and he steps closer to remove his own shoes. "I never wanna wear shoes like this again," he comments absentmindedly, picking them up. "Or a suit."

"You look good, though."

His cheeks flush, but he smiles a bit all the same. "Thanks." Then he looks up at her, and his expression hardens. She has the oddest look on her face, one he's never seen before. She looks kind of upset, and he doesn't like it, convinced it has something to do with him. He got swept up in the romantic atmosphere of the wedding, and now he's surely fucked things up. "Hey, are you o––"

He's cut off as Tohru puts her hands on his shoulders a bit roughly and pushes him backwards until his back is pressed against the front door. This is so out of the ordinary for her that he briefly shudders at the idea that he's earned such wrath from her simply by being his usual dumbass self. But he relaxes once she presses her lips against his. She traces her tongue across the seam of his lips, begging for entrance, then sighs against him as he slides his tongue back across her own. When they pull back for air, he lets out an awkward laugh.

"You scared me," he says softly, running his fingers through her hair. "Just want attention?" That felt like she wants more than just attention, but he's not going to try and initiate again. She has to explicitly tell him what he wants, or he's going to be a gentleman and leave her alone, he's decided. All that he cares about is making her feel safe and loved, regardless of what that entails for their night.

Tohru blushes at that, and seems to be almost thrown off by it for a moment, but she recovers quickly. She closes her eyes again and reaches up, pulling his face down until it is level with hers. She presses their foreheads together. "I want you."

He audibly gulps, and she smiles a little at his obvious nervousness.

"Okay," he murmurs back after a moment, then wastes no time in claiming her lips. They become entangled almost instantly, and Kyo can't even tell where his body ends and hers begins anymore. He starts moving forward clumsily, trying to lead them to the stairs. Tohru stumbles over her own feet and lets out a surprised squeak as she tips backwards, then giggles when Kyo catches her with a swift arm around her waist. He presses a kiss to the side of her head, mumbling into her hair, "Sorry. Guess we should wait until we're upstairs."

"It would've been hot if I weren't so clumsy," she mutters back. Kyo freezes. What did she just say?

"Did you just say 'hot'?"

"Maybe..."

He takes a deep breath and trails his lips down her neck, smirking in satisfaction when she gasps at the contact. "You're always hot, Tohru."

She doesn't answer, instead stammering, "C-can we go to my r-room now?"

Kyo nods and leans down, scooping the laughing girl up bridal style before taking the stairs two at a time.

Later, they lie side by side, Tohru curled up with her head on Kyo's chest. He plays with her hair with one hand, the fingers of the other locked together with hers. It's dark, the only light coming from the nearly-full moon outside her bedroom window. He stares at her closed eyes, listens to her deep breathing, and tries to figure out if she's actually asleep, or just cozy.

"Are you awake?" he asks softly.

"Mm-hmm." She opens her eyes and meets his gaze. "Are you okay?"

"I'm great. Very in love with you."

She giggles and raises their joined hands, kissing his knuckles. "I'm very in love with you, too."

"Yeah, still?"

"Mm, maybe even more now," she admits.

He smiles at her, then takes a deep breath and steels himself. "Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"I know that we talk about getting married and having kids and everything, but...could you actually see yourself doing that? Like, going through with it?" She sits up. For the second time tonight, he can't read the look on her face, and that makes him nervous. "With me?" he adds, and he hates the way his voice trembles a little as he says it.

Tohru's quiet for a minute, then says, "Do I seem like the kind of person who would just date for fun? Without any sense of commitment?"

"Huh? W-well, no..."

"Kyo-kun...I'm with you now because I want to be with you for the rest of my life. I'm not just here right now to mess around. I'm staying with you forever. And if that means getting married and having kids someday, then that will make me very, very happy."

They stare at each other quietly until Kyo sits up, as well, then leans his head on her shoulder, nuzzling against the side of her neck. He knew as much before asking her just now, really. But every time they have a first in their relationship, especially a big one like what had just taken place, the demons that used to haunt him come back.

She doesn't really love you. How could she love someone like you?

"Sorry," he whispers against her skin. She shakes her head and cards her fingers through his hair.

"It's okay."

He can't stop himself from tearing up. She jumps a bit at the sudden moistness against her neck.

"Sorry," he says again, because he doesn't really know what else to do.

"You deserve this, Kyo-kun," she says softly. "I love you."

"I love you too." He manages to pull himself together pretty quickly, which makes him feel slightly less pathetic, and he takes her in his arms again, pulling her back down onto the mattress.

When he smiles at her, her entire body relaxes, and she smiles back.

"Was that your way of proposing to me?" she teases, poking his ribs playfully.

"Eh?! N-no, I'm going to do a better job than that!" he blurts out, probably a little too loudly for the situation.

She giggles and snuggles into his side again. "I'll be waiting."

A/N: So, I have legitimately no idea what happened with this fic lol. I know I say that a lot, but I mean it this time. It started with a prompt I saw: a character saying "that's the sixth time you've complimented me today." So my brain was like "GREAT, we'll put Tohru in a nice dress for a wedding and it'll be perfect." Then, when I got to the end, I realized I hadn't even put the prompt in at all. So that was fantastic. I hope it made sense nonetheless.
