A/N: Yes, I wrote a winter fic in May. Sorry lol. I saw someone on AO3 play around with an OTP fluff generator to come up with fanfic prompts, and that sounded really fun, so here's one of the prompts I got. Enjoy!
Original prompt: Tohru tossing snowballs at Kyo's window, not knowing the window is open and has no screen.
He's sitting on her bed reading when it happens.
It's one of the weirdest things he's ever experienced.
The manga he has propped up on his pretzel-style-crossed legs is just starting to get good. It's cold outside, and through a shiver, Kyo fleetingly thinks that he should close the window before it starts snowing, but he can't tear his eyes away from the pages yet. Then something white and round enters his peripheral vision, and it's hitting him square in the jaw before he even has time to react (his cat-like reflexes left when the curse broke, unfortunately, or this whole situation could have probably been avoided).
"Oh my god," he mumbles as he jumps, the manga teetering off the edge of the bed. He brings a hand up to his stinging cheek. It comes away wet, and when he looks down at it, he notices that his lap, Tohru's bedspread, everything around him is covered in clumps of melting, white snow.
"Oh my god," he says again, louder this time, because he's not really sure what else to say, or even what really happened in the first place. He leans over and looks out Tohru's window to see his girlfriend standing on the lawn, her shins nearly completely hidden under a blanket of snow. How long had it been snowing while he'd spaced out?
"Eh? Kyo-kun?" she calls.
"Tohru, what the hell are you doing?"
"Oh my gosh...I...I thought the window had a screen! I was just going to throw it to get your attention."
"How did you not know your own window doesn't have a screen, you dope? Everything's gonna be soaked now," Kyo chastises, and even from this far away, he can see the blush that floods her cheeks with color. He can't help but smirk despite himself. Yeah, he can feel melting snow seeping through his jeans, and her blanket is wet, and maybe his manga a bit, too. But the look on her face is absolutely priceless.
"I'm so sorry!"
"You don't seem like the kind of person who'd have such good aim," he teases. "I learn something new about you every day."
"I think I just got lucky…"
He snorts out a laugh, then stands.
"Where are you going?" Tohru calls up.
He glances at her. Her cheeks are still tinted red, though he doesn't know whether it's from the cold or embarrassment, but it's adorable either way. Without saying anything else to her, he heads downstairs, shoves his sneakers on, and joins her in the yard. When she sees him, she opens her mouth to speak, but Kyo quickly slides his arms around her waist and presses their lips together. When they pull apart, she murmurs, "Hi," whatever she was planning on saying clearly lost now.
"Hey, you. You know I love you, right?"
Tohru giggles. "Mm-hmm. I love you too, Kyo-kun."
He releases her and bends down, gathering snow up in his palms, smashing it together into a clump that loosely resembles a lumpy ball.
"Kyo-kun, no," she begs quietly.
"Because I love you, I'll give you a five second head-start." He stands back up, a grin tugging at his lips.
"Kyo-kun."
"Five," he starts, steeling his expression into what he hopes appears serious.
At that, Tohru sighs and starts to jog off across the yard—or tries to, but she's so short and clumsy that she just stumbles awkwardly and slowly through the thick snow. Kyo smiles at how adorable she looks as she struggles to get away, and…
Then he tosses the snowball, hitting her between the shoulder blades. Tohru keels over dramatically, as if she's been shot, and Kyo laughs before coming to her side and tugging her back up by the hand.
"You're such a goof."
She grins, moving the hand that's still holding hers to her lips. She presses a kiss to his fingertips.
"Have you learned your lesson?" he adds quietly.
She bites her lip. "Maybe."
Kyo crouches again, and Tohru grabs his arm, giggling. "Yes. Don't do it again, please. I'm already freezing."
He smiles at her, something he finds himself doing quite a bit lately, and squeezes her hand. "Want some tea?"
She shakes her head. "This weather calls for hot chocolate!"
"Good point. Well, let's go inside before you get sick. I'll make it while you change."
They start walking toward the house in a comfortable silence. At the front door, Tohru pauses.
"What's up?" Kyo asks.
Expression completely serious, she says, "Thank you for loving me, even after I hit you in the face."
"Pfft. Come on, weirdo."
They laugh together and head inside. Kyo has never really liked the cold. But in this moment, he realizes that maybe he doesn't mind it too much anymore, since he gets to feel the warmth she puts off now.
