Day 11
The next day, both Atsumu and Sakusa had classes but none at the same time or near each other so they didn't see each other until practice. Kiyoomi had been restless all day and although he knew Atsumu's schedule would not bring him nearby, Omi still spent the day looking for that shock of blonde hair. By the time practice rolled around that afternoon, he was more than ready to set eyes on his boyfriend, if only to assure some insecure part of his brain that Atsumu was still alive and still into him.
Sakusa breathed a sigh of relief when Atsumu sauntered into the locker room and threw him a mischievous wink. He looked away quickly like he didn't care, but he was actually very happy to see his boyfriend. As usual, Atsumu was all smiles and jokes and energy, while Kiyoomi was quiet and reserved. Practice was the usual stare-fest but if anyone noticed they acted differently around each other, no one said anything.
Finally practice was over and the two once again were left alone in the locker room. Atsumu asked if Kiyoomi wanted to go to the nearby coffee shop before heading back to the dorms, and Sakusa agreed. They chatted on the way about practice and their upcoming match in Tokyo, which both were pretty psyched for. They thought they had a good chance against their opponent if the team played well.
They arrived at the coffee shop and Sakusa held the door open for Miya. They waited in a short line, looking over the menu. When it was their turn, they approached and saw a very pretty college-aged woman working the register. She had black hair and striking blue eyes. Her name tag said 'Kiyoko.'
"Hi," said Kiyoko cheerfully. "What can I get you?" Atsumu and Sakusa both ordered coffee and a pastry and Kiyoko kept looking from her register to Atsumu. Finally, as she was taking their payment, she asked, "Aren't you the setter for the volleyball team? Miya right?"
Atsumu smiled that handsome smile. "Yeah, that's me."
She continued, "Oh, I knew it. You are really good. My friends and I love watching you play. We are always so impressed with your serves." She practically cooed with admiration, making Sakusa want to vomit.
"Oh, haha," replied Atsumu. "Well, thanks I guess."
"Be right back," she chirped as Sakusa sent a dirty look to his boyfriend.
"What?" asked Miya.
"She's flirting with you."
"Yeah, so what?" Kiyoomi rolled his eyes. Kiyoko came back a minute later with their pastries and coffee. She gave Atsumu a flirtatious smile along with his order.
"My number is on your cup. You should call me sometime."
Atsumu didn't exactly know what to say because Omi wanted to keep their relationship secret for now. So he was as vague as possible saying, "Oh, haha. Yeah, maybe."
Sakusa had taken his coffee and snack to a table and Atsumu followed a few seconds behind. The setter sat down and said, "Well that was awkward." He looked over to Kiyoomi who clearly was angry. He didn't answer Atsumu, just started to eat his pastry without speaking.
"What?" asked Atsumu.
"She was flirting with you. She gave you her number!"
"Yeah, so?"
"You took it! You didn't say that you have a boyfriend!" accused Kiyoomi with a blend of hurt and anger.
"Omi-kun, you're the one who didn't want to tell everyone about this yet. What was I supposed to say?" Atsumu was trying to be reasonable.
"I don't know exactly, but something that didn't imply you might call her!"
"I'm sorry, Omi," apologized Atsumu sincerely. "I didn't know what to say so I just tried to get away as soon as possible." Sakusa took a drink of his coffee but his dark brows were still pulled together into a scowl.
After a short silence he asked, "Does this happen to you a lot?"
Atsumu responded. "I don't know. Sometimes, I guess."
"I don't like it," declared Kiyoomi.
Atsumu was a little surprised. "Omi, it's not like it's my fault!"
"Still, I don't want other people hitting on you, especially not right in front of my face."
"Well it's your own fault for not wanting people to know about us!" Atsumu was whisper-yelling. He felt unfairly accused and it upset him. He didn't do anything wrong. "I'm leaving," he declared.
"What? Why?" asked Kiyoomi.
"Because I didn't do anything wrong and you're acting like a jerk." He stood up and practically stomped out of the coffee shop holding his coffee in one hand and his pastry in the other. Omi sat there for a few minutes, stunned. Did we just … have a fight? And was it MY fault? He was feeling confused again, a sensation he was becoming intimately familiar with since he and Atsumu got together.
He drank his coffee in silence, trying to figure out what he was supposed to do. He had never been in a relationship before, but in movies, when someone screwed up, they were supposed to apologize and beg for forgiveness. Then they had makeup sex. The makeup sex was intriguing but he wasn't quite sure about the apology. Was he really the one who was wrong? Shouldn't Atsumu have said he wasn't available? He could have said that without saying the two of them were a couple, right?
Sakusa finished off his coffee, put his mask back on, and got up to throw away his trash. He walked out of the shop and back to his dorm, trying to figure out what was expected of him in this situation. He got back to his room and checked his phone, but there were no messages or calls from Atsumu. He wasn't too proud to admit that it hurt. They had been spending part of each day together for what? A week and a half. And now he was going to spend an evening all alone in his room.
He used to like the quiet solitude. He used to enjoy not being distracted by endless and mindless chattering. But now, as he sat in his dorm room alone, it was TOO quiet. He understood logically that it was just the same as it had been before Atsumu, but now the silence seemed not to comfort and relax him, but instead to taunt him. He reminded himself of how they got here. He didn't want to be alone for the rest of his life; he didn't want this to be everything he ever had. Alone. Lonely.
Okay, he thought, I have to apologize. I'll try texting first.
Sakusa: miya-san i'm sorry can we talk?
Atsumu: ...
Atsumu:
Atsumu: tomorrow
Sakusa stared at the word, looking so innocent but seeming to imply a host of nightmare scenarios. Did that mean Atsumu didn't want to be with him anymore? Did he mess up that badly? Was Miya always like this? Would he even talk to him tomorrow or was that some code for 'I never want to see you again." Kiyoomi was a bit panicked. He had no experience to draw on in this situation. He figured he should ask someone for advice but none of his friends on the team knew about him dating Miya. So that left one other person he could trust, his cousin, Komori. So he fired off a brief text.
Sakusa: are you busy? can i ask you a question?
Kimori: not busy sure
Sakusa: say you were dating someone and you had a fight
A moment after Sakusa sent the text, his phone buzzed with a call from his cousin. Sakusa answered the call. "Hey."
His cousin didn't spare a greeting. "What the fuck? Spill. Are you dating someone? Who? For how long? What is happening? Why didn't you tell me?" Komori fired the questions off in rapid succession. Kiyoomi tried to answer the questions he could remember.
"His name is Miya Atsumu and he's the setter for our team. We started dating a few days ago. And I … we had a fight and now he says he doesn't want to talk to me until tomorrow."
"And you're upset and needed to talk to someone?"
"No. Well, yes. Should I be upset? I'm so confused."
"Tell me the whole story."
So Sakusa told his cousin the whole story starting from that first day in the locker room, well, not really the WHOLE story. He may have edited out some of the more intimate parts. His cousin seemed surprised but proud that Kiyoomi had trusted someone to touch him and seemed to be a little miffed at who he called "this Miya guy" who had hurt his cousin.
"So what should I do now?" Kiyoomi asked. "I don't have any experience with relationships."
"Well, everyone is different and I don't know him or his personality, but he didn't text anything nasty and said you two could talk tomorrow, so he probably just needs some time to cool off. Maybe just wait till tomorrow and try apologizing again?"
"Okay. That sounds reasonable. It just feels weird to end the day fighting. I've gotten used to him being around. He … he makes me feel normal."
Komori sighed. "You are normal, Kiyoomi. Everyone has their own hangups, believe me, just not everyone shows them."
"I guess," responded Sakusa, though not quite convinced. This was his cousin so he had to say nice things, right?
"I'd give him till tomorrow. If something happens and you want to talk, just let me know, okay?"
"Okay. Thanks, 'Mori."
"Anytime, Omi."
Sakusa disconnected the call and looked at his phone. Still no messages or calls from Atsumu. His heart hurt a little at the thought of 'Tsumu going to bed angry with him. He was still a little irritated at the way Atsumu handled the situation but was man enough to admit that he might have overreacted. It wasn't like Atsumu had actually done anything wrong.
He finished his school work and readied for bed, but sleep did not come easily. Again his thoughts floated back to the blond setter, his easy smile, his chestnut eyes, how he looked when he snuck a wink at Kiyoomi when he thought no one was looking. Omi smiled into the darkness. He wasn't angry anymore and he really, really hoped Atsumu wasn't either. But he would need to wait till tomorrow morning to find out.
